Today's guest was a household name in the New Age movement, publishing dozens of best-selling books and sets of divination cards. She drew from a variety of religions and faith traditions and pointed her followers to the practice of angel spirituality. In 2017, everything changed, causing her to renounce her past and point to Jesus. Today's guest is someone whose story will captivate and encourage you. Doreen Virtue spent decades as one of the most recognized names in the New Age world.
A best-selling author, a psychotherapist, a regular face on Oprah and CNN, and ranked among the top most influential spiritual teachers on the planet. But in 2017, God broke through and she gave her life to Jesus. She walked away from all of it. Since then, she's earned a master's degree in biblical and theological studies with highest honors and has devoted herself to helping people, especially Christians, recognize and avoid New Age deception.
She is the author of the book From Counterfeit to Christ. Doreen, welcome to Bleeding Daylight. Thank you, Brother Rodney, for having me on. This is such an honor and a joy. I understand that you grew up with a mother who practiced her own form of faith. Is that where your interest in spirituality began? I believe so. My mother was a third-generation Christian scientist. That's not to be confused with Scientology. Christian science is part of the New Thought movement.
We were raised to believe that we could heal anything with our thoughts and with prayers. So, it was very much like law of attraction. We did not go to doctors in school. My brother and I were not allowed to go to any health classes because the belief was if you knew about sickness, you would manifest it. So, it was a very strange childhood, especially since this was way before Oprah or any of the popularization of New Age was going on.
The other kids thought, and they were right, that I was weird, that I wouldn't go to health classes. I took art classes instead. I thought it was normal. My brother and I were told we were Christians. We read the Bible every day. It was through the lens of New Thought, so it was not biblically accurate. And then we went to church twice a week. From the outside, it looked like we were a normal Christian family, but we did not follow or know the real Jesus. We definitely didn't know the gospel.
If we did, we would have rejected it as being too negative because we really believed that we had to keep our thoughts laser-focused on health, abundance, and everything that we wanted in our lives. It was brainwashing, quite frankly. Some people these days, as you say, would believe that Christian science is just another Christian denomination, but I suppose where most other sorts of faiths fall down is their belief on who Jesus is. What is the belief in Christian science of who Jesus is?
Oh, it's so hard for me to say this, Rodney, because it's blasphemous and heretical, but I'm going to say it for the purpose of an illustration of a false Jesus, false gospel. So, Christian science, like the Gnostics, believed that Jesus was a created human who was especially enlightened and that he came here only as a role model.
He is our role model, that's where it gets twisted, but that was his only purpose, according to Christian science, was to teach us how to do miracles like him and how to heal like him. And the belief of Christ, instead of knowing that that's the anointed Messiah, the belief in Christ was that we could be Christ or that we were Christ in training. Looking back on that, I did not know who Jesus was at all. He was this elusive figure.
We celebrated Christmas, we talked about the Bible all the time, we used the Christian language, but we were talking about a different Jesus. And that's one of the things I'm trying to bring awareness to Christians is when you meet people, as you said, where people think, well, all denominations are the same, they're not. If you meet someone and they say, I love Jesus, too, you might want to ask them, well, who is Jesus to you? And listen, if it matches up with the Bible or not.
1 John 4 is a brilliant exhortation about testing the spirits. Does that person describe Jesus biblically or not? Are they using the neo-Gnostic belief that he was just a spirit or he was just a created man? Not knowing that Jesus was fully God, fully man, that's heresy. Jesus came to earth the only one to live a sinless life and he was truly God and he was truly man.
And he was the only one who had the qualifications to take the punishment for the sins that all of us have committed, without exception, we've all sinned. So he went to the cross willingly and suffered and died on our behalf. And he imputed his righteousness to us and took on our sin for this wrath that was being poured out on him. And he died as prophesied, buried in a rich man's tomb for three days, and then he was resurrected physically.
This is the part that is so needed to know, because the Gnostics said he was only spiritually resurrected. The New Agers say that this is all the Sumerian Babylonian belief in Osiris, like the zeitgeist myth. No, this is historical evidence that Jesus really did live. He really was crucified. Just hundreds of people saw him, touched him, talked with him, ate with him after he resurrected physically conquering sin and death on our behalf. Hallelujah.
What everyone needs to know if they don't know it already is that Jesus ascended to the right hand of our Father God. He is the second person of our Holy Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and Jesus will return to judge us all. And if we are not cloaked in Jesus' righteousness through believing in the gospel of his life, death, and resurrection, if we're not cloaked in it, we will be judged naked and raw for our sins. There'll be no covering for us.
The Bible's really clear where we'll spend eternity. It's eternal torment. So, a lot of people say I'm now negative and judgmental for saying all this. It's my caring and feeling horrified that I was teaching a false gospel previously. Pete How did you move on from growing up in that kind of a faith to the sorts of things that you got into, into that full-on New Age kind of movement? That's a really interesting question, Rodney. I mean, it was a bunch of influences. I was a psychotherapist.
I got a BA and an MA in psychology from Chapman University, and I was specializing in women's eating disorders. And I started to write books about it, and I started to go on a lot of the talk shows. And then I was invited to tour with a mind-body-spirit group. They had festivals.
And while I was at these festivals, because we were touring two or three times a month, on the off times when I wasn't speaking, I would go to the booths that they would have on the convention room floor, you know, these different stations. And I would just talk to these people, because we were all traveling together like a circus family. And I would ask them, you know, what are you teaching? What do you believe? I'm a consummate researcher, so I was just absorbing.
They were teaching me about Reiki. I became a Reiki master. They were teaching me about yoga and chakras and things that were really kooky, but I was interested in them. Channeling and psychic development. Through that touring, I segued in the 1990s from being a New Thought believer, and I kind of carried some of that with me. But that's when I segued into being a New Age teacher. Hay House started to publish my manuscripts, including Hay House Australia, unfortunately.
I feel really bad, and I just want to apologize right here and now, because I know you're in Australia, Rodney, that Hay House toured me all around Australia for years in Perth, Western Australia, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Brisbane, and Sydney. I didn't know I was deceived. I thought that I was comforting people with my heretical, blasphemous New Age teachings. But unfortunately, I wasn't. I was deceived and passing the deception along, and I wish I could rewind all that.
The best I can do now is to warn people about all this as a former insider, and to also say that some people still sell my old work. I do not. I stopped selling it when I got saved in 2017. But there's people selling used copies that I have no control over, and my former publisher said that there's people selling bootleg, illegally printed copies.
The work is still out there, and just for those who have ears to hear, I want to tell Christians particularly, because a lot of them don't seem to recognize New Age deception that's seeped into the church, and I want to show them that we have to be like Bereans. Acts 17.11 talks about this. We have to compare everything to God's Word, because there's stuff that's being allowed in churches that should not be condemned in dangerous practices.
I want to talk about that some more in a moment, but firstly, I want to know about that moment that your eyes were open when you went from darkness to light. How did that happen? Anne Marie Well, it was gradual. Again, I believed I was a Christian. I was a student of world religion, mostly. I thought all paths led to the same God. Now I know all paths do lead to God, but God's judgment.
And Jesus says that if we come to him and say, Lord, Lord, and we point to our works and say, Hey, you know, don't you know me? And I'm paraphrasing, of course, Jesus will say, away from me, you workers of inequity, I never knew you. So there's severe danger in following the false Christ like I was. I was 59 years old when I was saved nine years ago.
It started with me being a student of world religion, I would listen to podcasts, there were more radio shows back then of different spiritual leaders. And I would listen to Christian leaders, as well as shaman and Buddhist and Hindu and whoever was talking about spirituality, I would tune in. But this one day, this was January 15, 2015. And I was driving, I heard Alistair Begg on the radio on Christian Satellite Network, and he's a Baptist pastor in Ohio.
He had a sense of humor and his beautiful Scottish accent. But he was talking that day Rodney about how in the end times, people will want their itching ears tickled with false teachings. There's a second Timothy four, a sermon called itching ears, you can find it online. Then he described a false teacher. And he talked about how false teachers give people false hope. And as he talked about that in detail, it was the first time I ever remember in my life, being convicted.
Up until then, I was following the new age new thought, there's no such thing as sin. We're all perfect, whole and complete. We're all good people. I was following that line. But when Alistair talked about a false teacher, I could feel it in my chest in my heart, just this conviction. And I went home, because I was listening to him in the car. And I said to my husband, you know, I really think we need to start going to a regular church.
We'd been going to new thought churches before then, and an occasional Catholic church. We just liked the mysticism there in the statues, because we were idolaters then. But anyway, I said to my husband, we need to go to a regular church, and I really want to start studying the Bible. So my son sent me the one year Bible in the new Living Translation, which was an eye opener, because I'd been raised King James Version only, which is a beautiful translation.
But I couldn't understand all the these and those in the Elizabethan language. It was a stumbling block for me personally. I still read it, but I needed a newer translation. I read first the new King James Version, then I read the new Living Translation. And it was like putting on a pair of glasses. All these verses I'd been reading my whole life. It's like they came to crystal clear vision. Jesus said that? I thought of Jesus as this hippie, easygoing, you can do whatever you want, teddy bear.
And here I'm reading about Jesus telling the Pharisees that they're a brood of vipers. It just shocked me. I kept reading the Bible. When I got to Deuteronomy 18, and now we're in 2017, and Deuteronomy 18 is where Moses, who can't go over the Jordan River because of his sins, God is talking to the Israelites, the second generation, before they cross the Jordan River and telling them that they are not to be like the Canaanites who are being driven out of their land.
They are not to pass their sons or daughters through the fire. I was always pro-life, so I couldn't relate to that part. I'd had my kids young because I was pro-life. But the next part is what got to me. It said, and I'm paraphrasing, that you shall not engage in fortune telling, which I was, you shall not engage in divination, which I was, you shall not engage in necromancy mediumship, which I was, and you shall not interpret signs and omens, which I was.
And so I'm getting convicted as I'm reading this. But the kicker was Deuteronomy 1812, which says that the people who engage in these practices are a detestable abomination to God. I knew it was true, but I was shocked because up until that moment, I thought that I was pleasing God since people told me my new age work was comforting to them. When I read that it actually made me detestable to God, I fell off my chair. I knew it was true. I was stinging with pain.
I was crying my eyes out and pleading with God. And I was saying things like I did not know, but you know what I did know? Because the gospel was freely given to me through my life, but I'd rejected it. So that would not have held muster on judgment day to say I didn't know. But I was saying, please, please don't send the people who I gave these workshops to, and I wrote books for, don't send them to hell. I didn't mean to, I just kept saying I didn't know.
I said to God, please, I want Jesus as my Lord and Savior, because obviously I don't know what I'm doing in my life. I'm a hot mess. I don't know what I'm doing. Please, Jesus, take over my life. And it was that moment that the indwelling Holy Spirit came into me, and I no longer wanted anything to do with the new age. I was already doing a lot of YouTube videos, and I started announcing immediately that I'm leaving the new age and to please burn all my old products.
If you can't burn them, throw them away, please. People just went nuts. My books were translated in 38 languages. I'd been touring the world for 26 years, so I was really well-known, and people said I was betraying them. They wanted their money back. Naturally, we gave refunds for the first two years, as did my publisher, and then we ran out of money. It was just a lot of hate coming at me, still is.
People absolutely hate that I'm talking about this, but I have to because my old work is still out there, and I do not want anyone deceived on my watch without me at least warning them. Pete Do you find a little bit of a kinship with the Apostle Paul in that he was persecuting the Christian church and suddenly has this moment, and we realize that yes, he went forward and so much of what he's written is so helpful for us today in the scriptures, and yet he came from that background.
Have you actually thought through that and thought, well, I know that I can't go back over that, but I'm called to go forward from this point on? Mary Absolutely, Rodney.
His road to Damascus experience, while mine was not that dramatic, and I'm not even comparing myself to the apostle that wrote most of the New Testament, but that going from extreme darkness like he was, he was killing Christians, or at least being there when Stephen was stoned to death, and absolutely believing he was pleasing God while he was doing that. I relate to that so much. He calls himself the chief of sinners. I can relate to that. I feel like what I did was so heinous.
I cannot even believe God could forgive me for it. It was so bad. I mean, I was teaching people reincarnation. Psychic readings are all based in demons feeding that psychic information, and the demons observe human behavior, and so they give some accurate information. So, my readings were super accurate. I was known for giving details I couldn't have known to strangers.
I remember once being in wherever the Fox Sports Arena is in Australia, and I was touring with Deepak Chopra, and I think Wayne Dyer and Louise Hay, and we were all there, and there was just thousands of people in this huge arena, and the lights were not on in the audience, and I was giving readings to people in that huge arena, specifics about names and details and such, and it was even blowing me away. I was like, how can I know this? It must be real. Those were coming from demons.
All of my readings, and there was thousands of them over the 26 years that I was a new ager, they all failed the test of the spirits that I mentioned, the 1 John 4. Not one of the readings ever pointed people to the real Jesus. None of the readings pointed people to be an active member of a biblically solid local church. None of the readings pointed people to the Bible.
In fact, the readings would put down the Bible as the New Age believes the Bible is corrupted, and that it's got mistranslations and missing books, all that yada yada yada myth. I would say that. I feel horrible because those were all lies, but as you mentioned with Paul, God in his mercy and grace, he gave me a new heart, a new life, a new chance, and I'm passionate about warning people about New Age.
I also ask that people pray for New Age teachers, because when I was saved, so many people told me that they'd been praying for me, and I thank them all. Pete I imagine that as soon as you came out and said, no, Jesus is the way and Jesus only, that all those opportunities that you had in the past to tell a story, such as with Oprah, with CNN and others, I imagine those doors just immediately closed, and they weren't quite so interested that you had found the truth. Mary You betcha.
Hollywood is very much controlled by, let's just say it, by demons. They loved me when I was talking about spirits and about past life regression, all these unbiblical concepts. They loved me. I was giving readings to celebrities all the time in Australia and around the world. Celebrities would be backstage with us and touring with us, and at my home, these were A-list movie stars and TV stars and rock stars. They're in the darkness, not wanting the light, as the Bible says.
I lost a ton of friends. For a while, my own children didn't want to speak to me because they were embarrassed by what I was saying. Christianity is not popular. I've had people accuse me, oh, you're just trying to stay relevant. But hey, when God saved me, I was at the peak of my career. I was at the absolute peak of my career. So it wasn't like I needed Christianity to be relevant.
Why would I choose to embrace Christianity knowing that it's a path of persecution and that people don't understand it who aren't saved and that spiritual blindness makes people hostile to the gospel, the gospel's folly to those who are perishing? I mean, why would I choose that? It was all God, and I thank Him every day for this. You talk about those early years as you were growing up.
You were reading the Bible, you were going along to what you thought was a Christian church, and yet you were deceived. And so many people would be thinking, well, I'm okay because I'm part of a Christian church. But a big part of what you do now is warn people who are part of a Christian church who may have sound doctrine, but some of the things that people sitting in those pews are believing really comes from new age.
What are the warning signs we should be looking for, not necessarily preach from the pulpit, although sometimes that happens, but the things in everyday life that Christians are being caught by? Great question. I appreciate the opportunity to warn Christians that in our church, we want to make sure that the pastor has a Bible at the pulpit and is reading from the Bible.
Stories are fine to illustrate, it's giving anecdotes from their life, but the bulk of the Sunday sermon needs to be teaching expository from the Bible. If you can find a church that goes line by line through the Bible and gives solid commentary, you are home. That's where you want to be.
But too many of the churches that I attended before landing in a church like that, it was what we call a me-centered church, where it was all about how to live your best life now, how to pray in a right way so you can have a lot of money, or they would say things like the Christian science did I was growing up in. They would say that God guarantees your health if you just have the right amount of faith.
When the Bible doesn't say that, the Bible says that God allows us to suffer to draw closer to him, and that when he does heal us, it's according to his will, his way, his timing, and that it's not us coming up with a formula to control God. That was what we had in the new age, as we believed if we decreed and declared and affirmed, affirmations were huge, and we called God the universe back then, that the universe would deliver to us what we ordered like a waiter in a restaurant.
I have repented for that because God is not our servant. God's our creator. He created you and me and everything. When people tell me that, oh, your thoughts create your reality, or they say, oh, we're co-creating with God, I'll say to them, well, let's see you create a planet. Go ahead, create a planet or create an ocean. And of course, we can't do that.
And if they would just read the last few chapters of the book of Job, where God was confronting Job, where were you when I did this, this, and this? It's so necessarily humbling that we are not little gods in training. In the new age, we thought we women were goddesses in training. We're not. We are creations of God. We're the image and likeness of God.
And if we have believed the gospel of Jesus's life, death, and resurrection, and put our whole trust in Jesus, repenting from our sins, then we're adopted into God's family as his children. What an honor, what a privilege of that. But the churches, too many of them are teaching how to make this world better instead of focusing on eternity and storing up our treasures in heaven, instead of trying to store up our treasures here. Because this life is just a blip. I mean, I'm pushing 70 years old.
I'm going to be 68 next month. I want to tell you, my life went by like that. So I pray that younger people who are listening, I wish I could just rewind my life and have read the whole Bible early on and embraced biblical Christianity early on. If I could rewind my life, I would have raised my kids that way. Of course, it's God's providence, God's timing. He allowed me to become a best-selling New Age author for his glory that I now give all glory to God.
But if you're being called by Jesus, and you're afraid of what people will think, or you're afraid of what you might lose, none of that matters. It's all about pleasing God. We work for an audience of one. Now, we want to be loving and kind. It's not being rude to people. But your relationship with God is everything. And if you're not sure, please pray for God to reveal to you the truth of who Jesus is. He is not this homogenized, goody-goody pal that TV shows portray him to be.
I mean, he does love us. He is our brother. He's our teacher. He's our creator. But too many of the portrayals of Jesus, including in some church, they sugarcoat Jesus to not offend anybody. We need to be offended. We need to know you're a sinner. All of us have broken the 10 Commandments. Without exception, we've all dishonored our parents. Even if you think it's justified, it's against that commandment. We've all told a lie, even if it's a petty lie.
Everyone's stolen, even if it's a little piece of candy when you're a child. All of us have coveted our neighbor's property. The point is, all of us have broken the 10 Commandments to some degree or another. We can't compare ourselves to other sinners and say, oh, I'm not as bad as that person. If you just break one commandment, you're in judgment. You need Jesus.
We all need Jesus for Jesus, not just a get out of hell free card, but we need his protection, his righteousness cloaked around us, so that we can be assured that we will be in the new heaven and the new earth with Jesus for eternity. This is so important. This is the most important thing that you can ever focus on. Peter To many modern ears, that idea that even if you break the law just one little bit, that you are eternally damned, that sounds very, very harsh.
Yet at the same time, if we are to believe Scripture, God has actually prepared a way that that doesn't have to be the case through Jesus. When people say, I don't believe Jesus would be like that, we actually have a book that tells us exactly how Jesus is and the sacrifice that he was prepared to make. How important is it for us to actually get a right view of Jesus, not just the Jesus, I think, would do this?
Mary Yeah, that's what I'm confronted with every day, Rodney, because every day I post something about warning people about new age. I post the gospel almost every day. The feedback I get from people who are not saved is that, well, Jesus wouldn't judge. Jesus wouldn't say this. He's love. Yeah, he is love. That's one of his attributes. But Jesus, if you actually read the accounts of the people who lived with him, right next to him, the Bible is not mistranslated. There's no missing books.
The modern Bibles we have now in the good solid translations are almost identical to the oldest known biblical manuscripts. The Bible's true. It's really God's word, and it's a gift to us. And if you're having a hard time concentrating and reading, pray. Also, I think it's a really good idea to listen to audios of the Bible. I do both every day. I start the day off by reading personally, and then my husband and I read together. And then we listen to an audio at night.
You'll hear things you may not have noticed when you were reading it, but that's how you learn who Jesus is. And like with me, I was shocked to hear him say to the Pharisees that their father was the devil, and the devil's the father of lies. I mean, that just seemed so harsh and so rude and negative to my untrained ears. But Jesus had no fellowship with darkness except for to tell them, repent and sin no more, and to point them to the kingdom of God.
He ate with the tax collectors and the prostitutes. He ate with sinners, but he never said it's okay to stay in your sin. That's a common misconception. We're not here to all inclusive, that it's okay whatever you do. That's not love. That's actually a form of hatred to know that someone is hell bound and not warning them. And then not only sharing the gospel with people, but praying that the gospel is nurtured and grown like a garden seed that nurtures.
Pray that God will help that person and know that God's word does not return void. People might hate what you say when you give them the gospel. I did. When I would hear it, I'd be so offended. I remember my brother, who was saved 20 years before me, sharing the gospel at a dinner party at my house. And all the guests except for him and his wife were New Agers. And here's my brother at this dinner party sharing the gospel. I was horrified. I was so mad at him. I didn't speak to him for a while.
But now I thank my brother every time I talked to him, because he cared enough about me to tell me the biblical truth, even though it offended me, because the gospel necessarily offends and humbles us. It's the power of God for salvation. I know that now you are thanking your brother for sowing those seeds all those years ago.
But I'm also sure that there are people who are thanking you for sowing seeds, and people who perhaps have been going down the New Age path, who have seen the problems there and have come to Jesus. That must be really encouraging for you to know that you've been able to shine a light on Jesus and see people coming to know who he really is. It is encouraging, and at the same time, I'm very careful to give all glory to God. I can't save anybody. I can't do anything. None of us can. Only God can.
And at the same time, we can pray for God to use us to share the gospel, use us for his glory.
And every time someone comes to me, Rodney, and says that my testimony was what God used to point them to Jesus, I give so much thanks to God, because I really feel like because my old work is still being sold out there against my requests, and even against lawsuits that my former publisher has done against these bootleggers, the fact that my old work is out there, my old work has my website on the back of the products. Even the bootleg ones that are illegally printed has my website.
And so people who get these products will go to my website, and they'll read my testimony and the gospel and a lot of articles I have about the true Jesus. In 2025, I was a speaker at the Ark Encounter from Answers in Genesis in Kentucky.
At the book signing part of it, I wasn't signing any books, but I was meeting people afterwards, at least three women came up to me and said that they had bought my old New Age products, had gone to my website, and God used that to convict them and to point them to Jesus. And now they were Christians, and we were hugging each other as sisters in Christ. Hallelujah! It was such a miracle of God's grace.
And I pray for everyone who went to my New Age workshops or listened to my Hay House radio show or used my cards or however they were influenced by my old work, I pray for them all the time that they would be saved and that they would know Jesus too. Darlene, I'm quite sure that there are going to be many others who will be hugging you on the other side of eternity to thank you for the part that you've played in pointing them to Jesus. As you say, all glory to God.
It's so good when we are part of God's plans and He's able to use us. Now, I know that there are many of your products, as you say, out there from your former life, and we don't want people to be hooked up on those, but if people are wanting to find out more about the warnings that you're putting out, even to Christians about New Age thought, where is the easiest place for them to find you? Thank you, Rodney. Well, I do have some Christian books out I've written.
As you said, I went to seminary to learn how to rightly divide God's word. So, I've got some books that are free on Kindle Unlimited worldwide. You mentioned the one called From Counterfeit to Christ. That's a really good primer about the New Age and comparing New Age counterfeits to biblical truth. And like I said, it's absolutely free of charge on Kindle Unlimited. So, I recommend that book. I post every day on Facebook. It's facebook.com DoreenVirtue4FORJesus.
I would love to see folks from your podcast audience come over there and interact with us on these posts. I'm sure that there are people listening today who are offended by what you've said, because they haven't believed that way, but just as you were, and yet you chose to continue to investigate, that's really the encouragement, isn't it?
For people who do feel that offense, to actually consider what you're saying, to go to that Facebook, to go to your website, and to be able to weigh it up and say, is this the reality? Is that something that you're encouraging people to do, to at least dip their toe in the water and find out, is this for real? Yes, absolutely, Rodney. That's such a great point.
I've had so many women say to me that they followed me on Facebook just to hate on me, and they would get mad at me every day, but then Jesus started to work on them too. You can hate on me. It's not about following me, it's about following Jesus. So, come on over to my Facebook page. You can leave nasty notes for me if you want. I probably will have them hidden from others, because I don't want to spread that. The love and like community can be very vicious, I've learned through all of this.
I understand that. I don't think I would have cussed out my favorite New Age teacher who converted to Christianity like they're cussing me out, but I do understand that they're hurt, they feel betrayed. I do understand that if they're following the devil, the devil hates Christians. It's not us personally, the devil hates Christ and tries to compete with Christ, which is insane.
Please do come on over to Facebook, and if you've got an honest question that you can say kindly, I'm happy to interact with you and answer your question.
