Episode description

S6E4 – I am not going to lie; this episode surprised me. I thought it was going to be a precautionary tale about being a celebrity and constantly being fallowed. I also thought it was going to be about the tole being a paparazzi takes on a person and how they will relentlessly go after a photo. And while all these are true, this episode takes an unexpected turn.

We Welcome to the podcast, join host Ho ho Is he discusses the riveting Netflix original series Black Mirror. Now here he is broadcasting from the cat and Studio. Welcome to Black Mirror Podcast and as always, I'm your host, Ho Ho. So, how y'all was doing. I hope you're doing good. I really do. Today we're going to be discussing see episode four of season six titled Mazy Day. Oh yeah, I'll tell you what. I'm not gonna lie. This episode. It surprised me a little bit, it

really did. It definitely surprised me a little bit. You see, I thought this was going to be, you know, a precautionary tale about being an actor and constantly being in the in the spotlight and having people following you around like paparazzis, and you know, just how you've got to protect yourself in a matter of speaking, you know, you know, mentally and whatnot.

I also thought this was going to be a precautionary tale about paparazzis, you know, and the toll that it takes on them doing some of the things that they do in order to get that perfect shot. But that's not exactly what we got with this episode. I mean, granted all those things were true, you know, because the episode Oh oh yeah. By the way, before I go any further, spoiler alert, we are going to

be talking about the episode. So if you have not seen episode four of season six Mazy Day, definitely head on over and check that out and then come on back and listen to this episode. But let's assume that you have

already. So the episode begins with a gal by the name of Bo and she is a paparazzi and she's sitting outside of a of a hotel and she starts taking pictures of the the male couple that comes out, and one of the uh, you know, one of the people, one of the guys comes over to her and you know, knocks on the window and is trying to get you know, she he he offers to buy the pictures from her, you know, that's what that's what he offers to do, and you

know, and and she's like, oh crap, you know, you know, because he he approaches the vehicle wiles she plugs it in, plugs the memory card into her computer and is checking out the photographs int of which case it's like, dude, no, that's that's not how you're going to do this. You know, it's kind of like Kenny Rogers, you know, with the gambler, know whing to hold and knowing the fold and know whing to walk away, know when to run. You never count your money when

you're sitting on the table. And that's what she did. You know, she was sitting there at the place where she was taking the pictures, checking out the pictures, making sure that she got the shot that she wanted, instead of you know, watching, paying attention to what was going on. So anyway, he was able to approach her knocks on the window, offers to buy the photographs for five hundred dollars, and you know, she takes

her keys out of her purse because they're not in the ignition. Another point of why would you take your keys out if obviously you may need to take you know, make a fast getaway or whatever. That seems kind of stupid to me, But anyway, that's what she did. She you know, she gets out of there and then she is selling the pictures to somebody and you find out a little later that the guy whom she took the pictures of the celebrity that she took the pictures of committed suicide, and so now she's

in crisis mode. You know, she didn't feel real good about that. You know, it was definitely weighing heavy on her, and at that point, it would be pretty easy to say that she was questioning her her career choice. You know. Now, this is somebody whom we kind of find out through the story, through the episode that she's been doing that for a

while. She has a lot of contacts. You know, this isn't the it couldn't be her first time of having something happen like this, but at any rate, she's she's having an existential crisis and she's in a situation where she is, you know, the typical paparazzi scene. You know, a celebrity gets out of a vehicle going up to wherever it is that they're going, and they are surrounded by paparazzi and they're taking the pictures, they're taking

the shots. You got flashes going off everywhere. I mean, this, holy crap. And you have one of the paparazzi that is, you know, just taunting and just really being a jerk to this gal, to the celebrity, whoever she is, and bo is watching this unfold you know, and she doesn't like what she sees. She turns around, she walks away, and she's done. She's she's out of the business. You know, she's not doing it anymore. And then the scene goes to a celebrity in

a in the Czech Republic. We find out that she is an actress. But she's in her hotel room and she she takes a little recreational fungus. She she she uh, she pops the mushroom into her mouth, and she's beginning to to trip, you know, she she's beginning to go down the rabbit hole and she's going to find out you know, where you know, the uh Matt hatter is and whatnot. But she's in her hotel room and she's like, oh, I'm out of cigarettes. I'm not in a very

good headspace right now. And this this is after she you know, breaks the glass and cuts her finger. But you know that's that's neither here nor there. It doesn't really matter. But you know, she she's on her way to go get cigarettes because she thinks the dry is a good idea when you're taking some shrooms and you haven't come down off the high yet. And so she's driving down the road. She goes into a tunnel. Next thing, you know, bam, she she hits something. She hits something because

well she focuses on her finger and she's not focusing on driving. Precautionary tale, could be anyway. She is distraught about this. You know, she does not take this very well. She finds out that you will. She goes back to her to her apartment or a hotel room wherever it is that she's at. I think it's a hotel room. I'm assuming because she is an actress in another country filming a movie. And you know, well it

cuts back to another point in the show. You got both and he she gets contacted by another paparazzi and it's like, hey, you know this celebrity maze day. She started acting very erratic on set. She was very moody. She was having mood swings and she ended up getting kicked off the set because of something I don't remember what. At this point, at any rate, she's been mia for quite some time. Nobody knows where she is. She's not at home, she's not at her any usual places that she would

be. Nobody has any idea where they're at. People are offering like thirty thousand dollars for a picture of her more if she's messed up on drugs and whatnot, makes her look even worse. She's like, I'm out of the game, you know that, I'm not not doing that anymore. You know. She still has her contacts, but she's not she's not a paparazzi anymore. Well, she ends up doing a little bit of research into it, and she's like, wow, she's like legit, like she fell off the

face of the earth. And she's intrigued, and so she calls up some people, you know, gets in contact with her contacts. She's like,

what, you know, what's going on? What's all this about? She she ends up tracking her down, you know, because she had read something about her how she likes this particular type of food or you know these particular Yeah, this particular food from a particular restaurant, and she ends up going there to track her down, and then come to find out, she figures out where she's staying, and you have her you know, Mazy Day now is in you know, the the and we come to find out that it's

the home of a producer whatever doesn't matter, you know, and it's like she's really having a rough time. I mean she's just emotionally just just done, you know. I mean she is really really doing she's she's not doing too good. I mean, let's just put it that way. She's just being simple. She ain't doing too good, you know, and it's it's understandable as to why. You know, she was in the Czech Republic. She was on the job and she made a mistake and it costs somebody their

life because somebody died. We come to find out, you know, we find that out during the episode. Somebody dies. She's not feeling you know, she's feeling responsible, she's feeling guilty. She's not doing too good.

But as bo is sitting outside this producer's house trying to you know, get the photo, trying to make sure that Mazie Day is there, you know, the next morning after she gets there, that night, the uh oh, the maid shows up to clean the apartment or the house, I guess, and just the it's a wreck, you know, I mean it's a wreck. She went on a rampage. It looks like, you know, breaking all kinds of things, and it just it was bad. Somebody shows up, Hey, I'm going to take care of you. We'll be all

right. I'm going to admit you into a rehabilitation center. And that's where they end up taking her to a rehabilitation center. Bo follows her. They get to a diner pretty close to where the rehabilitation center is, and you

know they she was following way too close. You know that she is just not used to following people, because well, needless to say, she got spotted, which I thought was kind of ridiculous, because you know, they give you the sense like this is, you know, some they're traveling some distance to get to where it is that they're going, and they almost make it to their destination before you know the I guess it was the driver comes

out, walks over to Bow's vehicles and puts a screwdriver through all four of retires like you're not following us any further. But it's like, dude, I mean, come on, man, I mean, it's not like you didn't know she was behind you. I mean she only had like, you know, two or three cars following distance on a highway back road curvy thing. It's like that you knew she was there. Why the heck didn't you do this a long freaking time ago, you know, just just that's just

how I think whenever I'm watching stuff like this. I mean, I'm looking at like that makes no sense, that's not what would actually end up happening. Whatever. So anyway, she makes a phone call after she gets all of her all of her wheels flattened, she calls up a friend. He

shows up. They take off to the rehabilitation center because they find out whenever they were at well, she finds out whenever she was at the diner that some celebrity bought the whole just rented the whole entire place for the weekend, send all the staff home, everything else. So it's it's it's just this

celebrity. Don't know who it is, but obviously it's a celebrity with some money because this is kind of a ritzy place that celebrities go to to, you know, to clean up, to get off the drugs, to you know, get get right. So they get to this rehabilitation center, some other paparazzi show up because they put a tracking device on you know, the h bo's friend that she calls to, you know, help her out. And these guys are the quite essential paparazzi, you know, the ones that

will do anything, say anything. The the ones that just don't seem human, you know, the ones that are just I'm not going to say monsters, but I mean it's just they're not human, you know. And so they break into the place. You know, they get they get over the wall, they get into the interior, they you know, go to a somebody's dog is barking, but they are, you know, they get into the place, they you know, they get their marriage and they reach it

up through a fan, you know, an exhaust fan or whatever. You know, I'm not even sure what the heck you'd call it. You know, it's an exhaust fan, and you know, they see that, oh well, this might be her. I mean, this is where she's at, obviously because she's the only one here. But holy crap, there's chains around her neck. She's chained down. She's a captive and bo you know, who's going through this existential crisis, whom whom is really rethinking her choices

and everything else, And she's I need the savor. So she breaks into the room to go in there and get her. And the whole entire time, you have, you know, the two people that ended up showing up the two paparazzis that put the tracking device on you know Bo's friend. Well, they're just taking pictures the entire time she's breaking into the room. Whenever they go in, the whole entire time, it's just flash after flash after flash, Like, holy crap, people, you know, somebody's in needs

help. Bo was not allowing this to happen. And she's trying to free Macy day. She's trying to free or trying to set her free, trying to you know, help the situation, and you know, get her out of there, get her out of harm's way. Well that's when the episode takes a turn. And holy cow, because Macy's like, you guys need to go. You guys need to need to get out of here. They told me that I need to do this by myself alone, you know,

nobody else around me. And you know, in this excitement, I guess you can say you see a goat pin and I'm like, what, why is there a goat pen in her room with her chained up? That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Why is there a goat pin in there with a couple of goats? This is making this is crazy? Are you kidding me? Holy cow? A goat pin. I'm like, what else are you gonna throw in this room? Right? You know? I mean, what kind of episode is this? I'm so confused. Something happens, macy Day

is in pain. Oh this is not what I thought it was. Come to find out, Macy Day is a werewolf and she starts to turn because it's a full moon. Oh crap. Bo And the person that she had called is like, uh, we got to get out of here. We gotta go now. Well, the other two, the the the paparazzi that are that are taking pictures the entire time. They they apparently had a false sense of security because well, macy Day still has the chain and the uh

you know, she she still chained up, she still bound. They apparently had a false sense of security. It was definitely a false sense of security because you know, the werewolf was apparently she was hungry and apparently she figured that paparazzi were food. Boe and her friend. Well, the two paparazzis ended up, you know, dying very grisomely. And you know, they never stopped taking the pictures to getting the shot, you know, they they never stopped, you know, they you know, right, right, up

until it was like, oh, holy crap, we gotta go. And then one guy was pulling on the other guys like we got to get out of here now, you know. But by then, you know, hey, it was too late because the were wolf got him. Bo and her friend are able to escape to the diner. The were wolf shows up, killing everybody, and it ends where she ends up getting the gun of the

police officer because well, you know, he was already attacked. The friend that had showed up had already been attacked, and then the werewolf does a jumping leap toward Bo. Bo gets a lucky shot off and shoots the werewolf.

I guess it was a kill shot, I guess, but it didn't kill her just yet, because the werewolf turned back into Mazie Day and you can still see the you know, the collar around her neck from where she was chained up, and and Mazie Day is just like, you know, kill me, kill me, put me out of my misery, kill me. Well, Bo does something that I wasn't really shocked to see. You

know, maybe it was poetic, I guess, she can say. But she hands Mazie the gun and it's like, hey, you know, I mean, no words come out, but it's a Hey, if you want to die, you do it your own self. I'm not doing it for you. I'm not killing you. If you want to die, here's the gun. You do it. I'm not doing it. So Major grabs the gun, she points it to her head and is going to pull the trigger.

And this is where bo kind of surprises me because she picks up the camera that her buddy You'd given her and she puts it up to her eye to take the picture of the final kill shot. Really, really that that's what you're going to do. I mean I was like really, I mean, don't get me wrong. Even with some of the staff woos that. It's like, dude, no, come on, that's that's just kind of ridiculous. You know. The episode was a it was a really good episode.

It was very well done. It kept you in the dark about what was going on until the last minute. I mean, they didn't hint at anything, you know, they didn't reveal anything to let you know what was going on. It was a very good episode. I was I liked it. I really did. I very much like it. So let's get on with it. Let's go to the questions all right, let's go to the questions, because I got a few, I mean not many, but you

know I got a few. Do you view this as a precautionary tale about being a celebrity being constantly you know, have to constantly be on you know what I mean, you know, never having that break from being in the spotlight, never being able to be you always having to wear some kind of a mask and be on your best behavior, so to speak, you know, in order to appease you know, the paparazzi and you know, the everybody, the magazines, the the the fluff piece writers and the fans that

follow it all having to appease everybody. I mean, do you view this as a precautionary tale of being a celebrity? Do you view this as a precautionary tale of being a paparazzi? And the toll that for a good person with a conscience that you know, would never want that type of a that

type of a job. I mean, I mean if you had that being a good, you know person not wanting to be intrusive, you know, I mean, how would you be able to balance that between you know, your personal and your professional you know, I mean how how could you even compartmentalize something like that? I mean, would you be able to do that? I mean, I don't, I don't. I don't think I could. I really don't think I could. I don't think i'd be able to

do that. I think it would take a toll on me, and it would just if I was able to stay in, and I think it would change me. I don't think I would like the person I would change into, you know. I mean, I just I m man, I wouldn't be able to do that. I really just know. No, thank you,

no, thank you? Would you be able to do that? Let me know, because now I'm kind of curious, you know, And in that type of sittion situation where Bo has her existential crisis, she finally figures out what's going on with Mazie Day, would you pick up the camera and take that that picture? Would you have been able to do that? Because no way I'd have been able to There's no way I'd have been able to take that shot. You know, I'd have turned around and walked out of

there, just hands down, not even a question. There is no way after everything that she had been through, after you know, even after getting kind of drawn back into it. I mean, how hard did Bo work to try to save Mazie just to find out that maze is aware Wolf and holy crap, I gotta run for my life. I mean it's like, holy cow. You look at what she did and what she just went through, and and still she reverts back to being a paparazzi. What the heck?

Yeah, I don't know. What do you think? Did you like the episode? Did? Did you not like the episode? Was a little far fetched for you? You know, did did you? Did you like it? I did it a really good job, you know, I liked I liked the story. I liked the special effects, you know, the whole thing. I liked that they you know, they did it right. There was a few things that they definitely got wrong, you know, I didn't. I didn't like a few aspects of it, but all in all,

it was a really good episode. What'd you think? Let me know down in the comments.
