Episode description

Stephen Grosz KC(Hon) joins us to talk about the case of Ghaidan v. Godin-Mendoza, a case that marked an increase of recognition of the importance of gay rights and same sex relationships. Mr Mendoza was in a same-sex relationship when his partner of 30 years died, and their landlord disputed his entitlement to succeed to the assured tenancy of their flat. At a time when the Human Rights Act was being developed, the case showed how useful the act would be in interpreting legislative provisions so that they did not discriminate against gay couples.
