Hey everyone , this is Mel Wallace and welcome to BIM for All . Some say the most important question to ask is why ? Because it can lead to self-reflection , self-improvement and new ideas . Asking why can help people confront their motivations and impulses and understand the reasons behind their actions . It also uncovers their motives .
It allows you to think more analytically and to get answers that help you move forward . Knowing your why is a transformative force in both life and business . It provides clarity , motivation , authenticity , long-term fulfillment .
Clarity , motivation , authenticity , long-term fulfillment it's the driving factor behind personal success and the key to building a thriving , purpose-driven business . So we should take time to reflect on your why and let it guide you towards a more meaningful and fulfilling life and business journey . Remember , success is not just about what you achieve .
It's really about why you do it . Today's episode is a commentary on the importance of knowing why . Bim is the future for the AEC industry . Let's get after it .
Welcome to the BIM for All podcast . Here's our host , Mel Wallace .
Welcome back to BEM for All . Our topic today is knowing why BEM is the future for the AEC industry . Now , building information modeling is not a future trend for architects , engineers and construction professionals , or even owners . It's an ever-present reality and part of today's transformation into a more agile , resilient and sustainable industry .
As AEC firms grapple with environmental and economic changes , the future of BIM in construction has never looked brighter . You see , with BIM , aec companies develop collaborative environments that remove silos and foster communication .
Bim tools consolidate data into single sources of truth to reduce human error and with parties all working from the same data in a common data format . This makes for a more efficient flow of information . Seeing 3D models of the finished design can even highlight issues that may occur during the building's lifestyle .
So understanding BIM and how it changes the face of AECO is a crucial part of understanding or implementing the technology in your organization that is poised to become the leader in computer-aided design . Now it's important to understand the difference between BIM and CAD , of course .
In simple terms , when you use CAD for building design , you focus on the creation of drawings okay . But when you are using BIM , you focus on creating a class-free , fully coordinated building model , and then the drawings can be generated from the model . Drawings can be generated from the model .
So with BIM tools , aeco companies can ensure a competitive edge in the world of digital construction . So here's a question how is BIM used in the construction industry ? Building information modeling is a system of creating computer-generated 3D model representation of a building or facility's physical or functional characteristics .
It is a shared resource about the building's lifecycle , from design to demolition . Bim is becoming the future of digital construction . Bim solutions use object-oriented software that enables the technology to adjust when changes are made . The BIM objects represent a building's components , the physical and functional characteristics .
For example , a window object contains information on the product and its geometrical data , but when a change is made to that object , the software makes the necessary adjustments or identifies a potential conflict resulting from the change . And because the model is consistently updated , the model forms a single source of truth for any construction project .
So how is BIM applied in the construction industry ? So how is BIM applied in the construction industry ? Well , bim solutions provide shared access to 3D models . That facilitates collaboration among all the participants and stakeholders . This actually simplifies communication . It reduces rework and , of course , revisions .
Now these capabilities define the future of BIM in construction . However , building information modeling can do more than just 3D modeling , so let's talk about 4D models . Construction companies can use BIM modeling for scheduling , adding information on when materials will arrive or how long a project phase will take .
It enables construction management to deliver a more accurate completion estimate . Schedules change , as we all know in construction right , so when these changes occur , that information is shared and it keeps everybody involved informed . 5d models Project managers benefit from BIM solutions .
When cost information is added to the building information model , they can actually enter in the cost estimates , set budgets , track changes . They can also analyze budgetary data from the project's length and adjust the expenditures as needed . To remain on budget . How about 6D models ? Now ?
Building information entered into a BIM model can be used to calculate energy consumption , for example . Material objects can hold environmental characteristics that help determine long-term impacts and potential cost savings .
Now , with more and more focus on the environmental , social and governance concerns , as we refer to them as ESG right , calculating sustainability becomes an essential part of BIM adoption becomes an essential part of BIM adoption .
So , using BIM solutions such as Autodesk BIM 360 , the AEC industry can provide better operational management , more efficient scheduling and improve more energy efficient and sustainable buildings . These capabilities define BIM and the future of digital construction . So why is the use of BIM becoming a norm in construction projects ?
I think we all agree the crucial component of BIM in the future of construction is actually the I right , the information . The technology itself provides construction projects with information modeling , not just building models . Now you may be asking yourself what are the benefits of BIM ? Okay , and that's actually a great . Why question ?
Bim technology not only improves communication , as we've already spoke about , not only does it lower cost , but it also provides you a list of benefits that ensure the future of BIM in the construction industry . Now so let me share a few of these with you .
Faster completion benefit number one BIM technology transforms the design process by making it possible to start the construction project on time and with fewer delays . Because BIM is a database , building information modeling provides database insights to improve the design process . Benefit number two accurate analysis .
Accurate analysis by leveraging the database information , aec firms can identify more energy efficient materials to lower the carbon footprint of the building . They can even provide a more realistic cost estimate and outline the costs between different materials . The next benefit is lifecycle management .
Deploying BIM's 7D capabilities , aec firms can assess the lifetime management of a building . They can project operational costs that can inform construction decisions for a better return on their investment . These benefits are just the beginning of the future of BIM and digital transformation in construction .
Bim's object-oriented software and database architecture enables AEC firms to deliver sustainable solutions quickly and at a lower cost . It improves communication and reduces errors for more cost-effective delivery of an end product . So what's the future of BIM ? The future of BIM in construction is the future of the AECO industry .
Companies that implement BIM solutions , of course , will have a competitive advantage as their organizations become more agile and more resilient . They will be able to deliver more cost-effective designs in less time and with improved return on investments .
So hopefully , today we've shared a few thoughts of importance of understanding and knowing why BIM-enabled digital transformation partner that has the capabilities to deliver superior solutions to your firm . So I'll leave my contact information here in the show notes .
