So much breathing during that. I'm trying to make it like figure out ways to get it to be different so people want to listen.
To it. So we have to unscript it and just bullet point it is the way to make it different or change up. We can change up. Who says it? We'll talk off Meg about that. If you have suggestions, leave it in the. Comment. I was so enamored with her speech I forgot to turn on my ring light. Nice. She's always unto it. All right. We are. No, we're not starting here. I'm on episode 10. No, we. Are on episode 8, which is all
about being haunted by the past. This episode opens with Buttons and Carl who are moon bathing in preparation for the full moon, which again is another amazing cold open and this is when Calico Jack comes to visit, much to our dismay. Yeah, he's he's like the antithesis of Ed and I Ed antithesis of Izzy and the fact of Calico. Jack plays such a good villain that we absolutely fucking hate.
That's a really good point. Like up till now, we don't really have a real villain aside from like, yeah, you can like paint the British as, I mean, they're the villains. And Spaniards. Yeah, the colonizers for sure, 'cause we're rooting for the pirates also, who are like, again rebelling. But as far as like a pirate character, like, yeah, this is probably our first like true villain were introduced from that realm of where our
characters come from. 'Cause like you can't really count, like like Spanish Jackie's like an anti villain, anti hero type of deal because like she's not meaning to be a villain. She's just trying to protect her and her man's and stuff like that. And like trying to girl boss her way into having like, a successful place of business. Yeah.
She has her own nose jar. You don't mess with Spanish Jackie. Other thing that's going on in this episode is that Lou basically misses Jim because Jim in the last episode because like I need to avenge my family and like just complete this. So Jim abandoned jump ship basically and so he's in the hit the room that they used to share because Jim, that's how Jim hid their secret identity was like literally they had the only room aside from Steed's with a closed
door. So he's like, I don't want to sleep in here. I miss Jim, so the rest of the crew's like free room. And so there's this whole fight or not fight, battle. It ensues to like get the room and it ends up being like Frenchy and we draw that, get the room and I love. Sorry, you finish and then I'll ask this question. I was gonna say I love their
conversations with the room. When they're designing the room, it's so cute 'cause they take it so seriously cause both of them are like, I've never had my own room a room before. Like this is so cool. And then they just get to make it their own and they make like the little snook and like, it's just, it's so cute how excited they are and into like designing their room. I love it.
Though I will say they get so caught up in like like the excitement of having their own space away from like the crew that like they kind of put Olu on the back burner when like, he just needs a friend, 'cause he's missing Jim. And they're just like, that's our nook. You can't sleep there. Sorry. Shuts door like Frenchy. Come on, man. I know they do leave him out to dry. They're like, well, go go cry about that up deck with everybody else. Yeah, away from our room.
You're tainting it. Good vibes. Only the Feng Shui. Frenchie would 100% no. We, John, would 100% be in the Feng shui, 100%. Absolutely. Do we know how Jim and Olu got the room? Yeah. No, they don't say they don't. Explain it. Because it's very interesting that they were the ones to have
their room. I would like to think of a fan theory that's just like Olu. Like, since he since 'cause he Olu was like the only person on the ship that like kind of knew that the something was happening with Jim, Like, very vaguely so. Like with Olu and Jim's like relationship, even. Like without speaking he probably convinced Steed and was like, well Jim's a mute, you know, like he he he might or they might need like some time to like themselves like a little
safe space. And Steed was like, oh, I'm so on board with that. So like I can definitely see that being the case cause Jim obviously couldn't advocate for themselves just because they were mute at the time. But Olu most definitely could have been like that advocator cause like Olu definitely likes Steed. He definitely has like his best interest in mind, same with like Frenchie. So I definitely could see that being the case for that. I agree with that. Should have asked Vico Mr. Thought.
Maybe next time. We'll have another. Opportunity. All right, so back on the Revenge. Calico Jack, like it, easily wanders up to the ship and he gets taken aboard. And we learned that he was a crew mate with, quote, Ed before he became the famous Blackbeard. So back when he was just this, like young reckless Buccaneer, basically an immature Dick head, which is like the relationship he has with Calico Jack.
And to me, yeah. And like, to me this feels like a hyper, it feels like a high school reunion of sorts with like these hyper masculine men that like peeked in high school. That's the vibe they give me because they spend their whole time, at least in Calico Jack, influencing Ed. They spend their time basically like reliving their old glory days, which was just like getting drunk and breaking shit.
And this is Steve's introduction to what, like Ed used to be like in the early days of being Blackbeard, or maybe even as Blackbeard. And so he's trying to have these like simple conversations to like get to know Calico Jack, and by extension Ed in his youth. And Jack keeps cutting him off to tell these Glory days stories, like Ed burning a ship with the crew locked inside. Just because. And I think once Ed is like, because like, Ed's like, into it, you know, 'cause like, that
was a fun time, a carefree time. He didn't have worries at that time. You know, he's just young and reckless. But I think when he's hearing these stories out loud in front of Steed, these really cool stories, I think it's forcing him to reflect on, like, was it really that cool? Like, was my hindsight really like or is that pretty fucked up a word you? Know, I think it seems like Ed is ashamed of his whole life, especially once he spends more time with Steed.
Like he doesn't want Steed to know that side of him. He wants him to know him as is. Like carefree, Wanting to run an inn and restaurant and what? I was thinking that's the sad part too. Yeah, and when when Calico Jack comes to visit, like we said, Steve learns about the true horrors of pirating and what Ed has done, 'cause he he's not
that great at pirating. He doesn't really know like the extent of what it should be the entire time Ed looks so uncomfortable and just wants Jack to shut. Up like I. Also would like Jack to shut up and just get out of here, but that's another thing. So Ed liked that he had someone who saw him for what who he is now. Steve didn't know anything so this was a clean break. I mean we saw it in the their first meeting when Ed doesn't even tell him that he's
Blackbeard until later. And as the visit continues, Ed starts getting back into a routine. And I feel like his shame caused him to give up and revert back to his old life. So he's like, OK, well this is who I am. Like, there's why did I even try to change? Because my past will always come back to haunt me. And this point, it's just a person. And look, that's what is expected of him. Like he has the name Black Bear that will always be tired, tired, tied to him.
And when Jack gets kicked off the ship, Ed does go with him. And he tells Steve that this is who I am, but it's not who he is anymore. He just hasn't gotten to accept that yet. He's scared, Yeah. Yeah, I really did not like the way Ed acted while like Jack was around, 'cause like, he even saw like steed. Like it was breaking his heart. Like he kept going like with like the the crab and turtle fight with like the knives. How Like they were like betting out and everything.
And like, just like seeds like, oh, this, we could do something else. And like, they're just drinking away carefree, like the crews into it, because of course they are. But like, Steve's just like slowly, like heartbreaking because he's like who who is this man in front of me? And like, like, I definitely agree with like, what you said, Caitlyn, with like, Ed, just kind of like succumbing to his shame and like Jack just being there, like kind of fueling the fire and everything.
And like, especially with like, while like while they're on the island for like the beach day or whatever. And like, Jack's just kind of enticing like Steve, like going, well, you know, me and him do have history, like alluding that to Steve, like trying to make him jealous and everything.
And like, Steve is just like kind of taken aback and he's just like, well, you peed on my shoe and I don't like how you're talking to me. Let's keep going with that though, 'cause that scene, first of all, he and Chuck Calico draft keeps calling him Steve. He like refuses to call him his name. So like the whole time. So this is all protection he's trying to make. Steve Jealous, but that's also shows how much he doesn't respect him. Like the basics of respect is
trying to learn someone's name. That's I have a huge thing with that. I brought it up in so many episodes where try to say someone's name, try to spell it right if they correct you or it's literally written. I get so pissed off when someone spells my name wrong when it's literally written right in front of. Them. It just, yeah, it's just respect someone enough to try. And like, I also feel like the same way, just cause like my dad name, my my mom shouldn't spell
like the stereotypical way. So it's it was even harder for like people to say it correctly, pronounce it correctly, spell it correctly, and then like even now with like my name being Zoe, like that's my preferred name. And, like, my mom still calls me my dad name, 'cause I'm not, like, out to her or anything. But like in like, my my boyfriend, he'll constantly bring up, yeah, Zoe this, Zoe that.
Trying to reinforce that. But the show just be like, oh, well, I don't know why you changed your name, like, as if it's just, like, cut and dry like that. So, like, I definitely resonated with Steve with the fact that, like, Jack just kept going. Steve. Like, that's it's not my name, dude, stop that. And he even, like, kept trying to correct him and like, he eventually, just, like, started like, slowly giving up, 'cause
he's like this guy. And he's, he's not gonna call me Steve. He's just gonna keep calling me Steve. And like, that's definitely like the pushover aspect to him until he finally snaps. And we'll get to that after we discuss a few other things. Yes, there is so much here. But let's go back to the jealousy part though. So yeah, like you said, Zoe Jack implies that he and Blackbeard were a thing back in the day, 'cause they had some dalliances. And he's definitely, absolutely
trying to make Steve jealous. But if you watch Steve during the scene, he remains very composed when he's like hearing and taking in this information, but and in the moment, like he keeps his shit together. But later when Ed leaves with Calico Jack, because this is who I am, Steed stays up all night with the freaking not binocular but the little, I don't know,
telescope thingy or whatever. And he's just spying it, spying from the ship and comparing himself to Jack like out loud, like so. It's like it really did get to him, even though in the moment he tried his best to be like the past is in the past, but like, he's just like, that's stupid what they're doing. And like, poor Lucius is like, oh God, this has been going on all night. I will say the oh sorry, finish your thought.
Finish your. Thought you know I was going to move to the next part of the scene. But I was just going to say that that kind of just ties back to like the boat party and like Steve's old life with him keeping his composure while Jack is like trying to like make him tick. How? Like it's just showing his like perseverance and like stability. And he's just like back back in my world, if you blow up, you're not going to continue to get information.
So I need to keep that composure and continue doing that because I'm not gonna be able to hear anything else like this cause Izzy's not gonna tell me stuff like this. Izzy, they've had history, but it's not gonna be as this, like cut and dry. So I just thought that was a very interesting detail that he like, maintained his composure regardless of the shoe pissing. Yeah, no, absolutely.
And it's very like, again, he's like being passive aggressive towards Steve to get him to be aggressive. And Steve's like, Nope, I've already won this game. Won the battle, not the war type shit. Exactly. But he does unfortunately lose Ed a little bit to Calico Jack because Ed does leave with them.
He's like, I, you know, this is just me he leaves and so I love when Steve I don't love, but it's very sad when Steve that had to has to explain this to the crew and like the way he's saying everything sounds like a breakup speech. It sounds like 2 parents trying to explain to their kid why they're getting a divorce, but it's not their fault. Exactly. And the crew's just like so. Does that mean we're stuck with just you now? We're not riding with Black Peter anymore.
Oh my God. So I love that. But then the crux of the whole thing is that Calico Jack did not just, you know, show up there down on his luck by accident. He was part of the plot that Izzy was involved with, which was to sell Steed back to the British because the twin brother has the vendetta against Steed for killing his brother. So Izzy made a deal with them and Calico Jack was the bait to get Ed out of there because Izzy was like, save Blackbeard and I'll give you Steed.
And so Ed finds this out a little too late when he's like out on a dinghy away from the ship and he's like, oh, that's a bunch of British ships coming for the Revenge. And basically like Ed is like we can't do that like and it comes out this line cause like basically he's choosing his his he chooses his friend Steed basically over Calco Jack who's
not really a friend. Like that's pretty apparent when they're setting up the comparison of like Calco Jack who's like the fun raucousy guy compared to Steve who's like a genuine friend who has Ed's interests at heart. And Calco Jack has the line, what kind of pirate has a friend. We are just in various stages of fucking each other over which literally which very much is that like hyper masculinity like pirate environment where it's like, yeah, nobody is trustworthy.
We're all criminals. Like, even though we have our own quote code, Like the way you get ahead is by screwing over other people, by raiding their ship, by stealing their shit. So, like from somebody like Calico Jack's perspective where like all he knows is really pirating and he's like, quote, like a traditional pirate. Like, yeah, like the relationship between Steve and Ed seems really weird.
He's like, what do you mean he's your friend and you're willing to, like, jump ship when the British are coming kind of thing. Like, that's insane. Like you should save yourself. Like that's the opportunity I'm giving you. So yeah, it is kind of weird, like if you think about it from Jack's point of view. But I will say the whole Olivia and Carl Seagull thing was absolutely hilarious given Jack did kill our our boy Carl. But Olivia she got her look back.
I the omen of death and see. My God, that was so funny. Yes, I will. I will touch on the Carl stuff later. But yeah, Olivia showing up was hilarious and that ended up being his devise. It was so funny. Also it goes to show you that like the British were not going to keep their word to save Ed because like that was meant for Ed and his ship. Like so. But I do love the end of the.
So basically the end of the episode, like Ed shows up first deed and he's like I'm here man, never left, like let's do this together and basically they get raided by the British and a Fleetwood Mac song plays, which I love and at the end of it, like they end up getting captured by the British. Basically there's overwhelmed and Steed and Ed are like hand like hands tied with ropes behind their backs, face down on
the deck. And then we get the little foot touch from Ed, which is super cute, which is like I'm here seed, everything's gonna be. Fine. So cute, I believe. I believe the director didn't even know he did that until they were editing. That's so cute. Good job, good improv. All right. Anything else about the Calico Jack and Ed and Steed stuff? I'm going to talk about Calico Jack and the crew next and like the Carl thing. I do think it was. This isn't about Calico Jack and
the crew person. Skittle almost took me out. This isn't about Calico Jack and the crew person, but it's just about Jim and Spanish Jackie's conversation just circling back to the point that Jackie isn't a bad guy, she's just a businesswoman. Yeah, she's just operating in the realm of piracy, like this was a business transaction for Jackie. Which as far as we know she's the only established pirate like woman pirate. So like this is she has to act like a hard ass.
She has to have a nose door, like she can't let anything slide because if she lets one thing slide, then other people are going to think, oh, she's softened up and then try to betray her so. Yeah, unfortunately, and it's what Calico Jack said. He's like, we can't be friends. We're just in various stages of fucking each other over, and that's 'cause that's business as usual. Like you're saying, Zoe, like that's a really good point.
OK, so the other aspect I really love about Calico Jack's visit is I love how Steed's crew specifically reacts to him. So in the beginning when he first like is kind of on board, him and and Ed are starting to do like ridiculous shit. And one of the first thing they're doing is they're playing, quote, whippies, which basically they have a whip and they're just like breaking shit, which was like bottles along the rail at 1st and the crew was like watching and they're like,
what the fuck are they doing? This is really, really weird. And then they start whipping each other's testicles because they're high school boys is basically what they're doing, and they think it's hilarious and fun. Kids after they're talking that type shit. Oh my God. And so Ed and Jack are, like, super excited about this, 'cause they're reliving their glory days. And they, and they're trying to get, like the crew to, like, join in on their dumbassery cause like, the more the merrier.
But the crew is, like, not really feeling the situation. Like, this is weird. And Jack tries to show off and like, whip a card out of the Swede's hands, 'cause they're playing cards. And he, like, hits his hand. And so he like kind of like harms one of Steve's crew
members. And the way the crew kind of, like recoils immediately from this behavior, I it struck me as really, really interesting because you would think immediately from the jump the crew would be like, yes, a real pirate acting like a pirate, just no respect for anything, just doing whatever he wants. But like, it takes them a little bit to warm up to what they're doing. At first, they're like, this is weird.
And I think that like, at the end of the day, like I think they became accustomed to Steed and Steed's management style, like the preschool teacher management style where he treats them like civilized people and, you know, gives them a paycheck and and doesn't like, do these weird games with them. And like eventually they kind of like get on board with it when they go to the island and get drunk and like do the animal
fights or whatever. But at the breaking point and when the mask comes off later is when the Carl incident. So when Jack takes things too far which he's playing whippies again at night time and he accidentally kills kills Carl this eagle. And the way Buttons just like loses it and like howls in pain. Oh, his reaction. And the crew reacts to that reaction. And that's when they're like, we knew this was fucked up.
This is really fucked up. And that's when Steed steps up and he's like, get the fuck off my ship. Like, you just took things too far. You just harmed one of my crew members. Like, this is unforgivable. Get off the ship and the crew does not back up Jack at that point they're like, no, like, they basically remain loyal to Buttons to Steed. And so I like that they basically adopt Steed's unconventional like pirate style. And so I love that it's a big moment for them.
Whereas in the beginning they were like mutiny, like they would have loved to have gone with a guy like Calico Jack. But like here they've they've grown enough where they're like, no, we we prefer Steed and his humane treatment of all of us. Yeah, it it definitely wasn't fully intentional, but I think Calico Jack, when you're doing it towards something, obviously you know there's a chance that it could happen.
He just didn't care. He was also really drunk, so I don't think he knew what he was doing. That was part of it. And he tried to play it off. He's like, it's just a bird. I I did he it flew into the whip like, yeah, no, he was just careless and reckless at all. I was gonna say part of me likes to think that another reason why they were backing up buttons is in fear of getting hexed. I mean hex. Hex was.
Terrifying and especially cause like Jack was like so unserious with like taking it and then sure as shit Liv he comes in and is like squab bitch. I'm here. I'm part of the hex, bitch. I can't. Oh my God. But the cuts, the showdown of him versus Olivia was really funny where it's like, it's like close up with the birds and him and the whip. And like, I love that. And then Buttons is like get him Olivia. Oh my God. Buttons. I love buttons so much.
We stand buttons. Also, Steve was really cute. Or he's like, we're gonna have a funeral for Carl. Like that's very sweet. Yeah, 'cause he he he adores all of his crew members. And he knew how much like, like, Carl meant to buttons, especially with, like, the moon bathing and everything like that and that being their, like, almost nightly ritual. So, like, I I felt so bad.
Like I I'm, I probably cheered up a little bit when Carl died, 'cause I was just like, I already hate Jack enough as is. I didn't need another reason. Literally. No, I I I cannot stand him. But I think it's it's a it's it's a necessary evil that needed to happen to kind of just further the point that Jack's not a good guy and relate that to the crew as well as like give Steed a reason to tell him get
the fuck off my ship. So again, unnecessary evil, but RIP my boy Carl. But luckily we never see Calico Jack again. Do not RIP rest in pain. No, no. I'm talking about Carl. RIP, Carl. Not. Oh yeah, yeah. Yeah. Oh yeah, yeah. No. Carl Rust in peace. Fuck Jack. We never see him again. Rust in pain. All right, Anything else about episode 8 before we head on over to episode 9? No, I like 9.
All right, let's go. So in episode 9, the British take Revenge like the ship, and Ed saves Steed again and again. OK, so we pick up from the last episode where basically the crew of the Revenge has been captured by the British and Chauncey, Big Brother Chauncey or Big Twin. I don't even know the only one that's living of that brother duo. Him and the Royal Navy are basically like going after Steed because that's the whole point of this, 'cause he's after, you
know, revenge. And he's trying to figure out like, who, who actually killed his brother, 'cause it's like he's like, I'm here instead. But I don't know about that. So while Steed is being interrogated the the by Chauncey, the crew is waiting anxiously above deck 'cause they don't know really know what's going on. And Black Pete is like notices that Lucius looks super uncomfortable and he's trying to like console him like a good boyfriend, which is really, really cute.
But the reason Lucius is so distressed is because he's hiding seeds in meticulous journal that he's been keeping this whole time that totally will incriminate seed because he very clearly wrote he killed that bitch, right? Yeah, so Pete's like, oh fuck, we gotta get rid of the journal. How are we gonna get rid of the journal, 'cause that's what Lucy's is freaking out about. And Frenchie's like, I got this. This is my moment to shine. I got this.
So he recruits Roach, which this was a terrible this goes as bad as well as you can imagine. And basically they try to, like, just create a diversion, which Roach is just being Roach and like distracts the one guard. And then Frenchie tries to run for it to like, toss it over the side and immediately trips and gets captured. So the British officer gets the book and he's like, what is this? And Frenchie. This is when Frenchie tries to play it off as fan fiction. He wrote about Steen.
It's so, so funny and I love it. He's like, no, yeah, yeah, I I'm writing. I wrote about a bunch of things that happened and didn't happen. I just imagined him in so many scenarios and wrote them all. And I love it. He's illiterate and can't write and this, so it's even funnier than, Oh my God, that's so funny. Shout out to everybody who do writes fan fiction about the about any things that, like, you're the real heroes out there. But I love this scene, OK?
And then we cut back down to Chauncey interrogating Steed. And basically he he gets the journal now and he's like, I don't believe this journal because Blackbeard just confessed to me that he killed my brother. And that makes way more sense. Even though when we cut the interrogation of Blackbeard, it's just like, he gives the Blackbeard clearly has no idea what happened. And it's just giving all these vague answers. He's like, he's like, I stabbed him and he's like, where'd you
stab him? He's like, oh man, I stabbed a lot of people. I'm pretty sure he does give a wrong detail though. Oh, for sure. But he just plays it off. He's like, I don't know, I stabbed so many people. I can't keep track of where I stab everybody. I commit so many murders and they're like, yeah, that I guess that makes sense. So funny but. 'Cause that would show respect to them to remember how you killed.
Them. But when you like murder, so many people like you really can't expect him to remember like details about. He's like, that was a Tuesday for me. I don't remember your brother. He wasn't important. And it's just like eating Steed alive and like, it cracks me up because like after, like after like that all happens and everything and he's just like like the captain's like whatever. And the seed's like put back at the blindfold, put it back on.
And then luscious goes act of grace and like they start reading off like the like journaling and everything. And like I love that they did that because the real life Blackbeard did actually get like a pirate pardon. So I thought that was very nice to like add another like historical element to this like just it was such a wonderful twist and the fact that like it was actually historically accurate made it even better. I do love that scene.
One more thing I want to add before adding on to that cause yeah, I love that tidbit is when Steve's with Chauncey and he doesn't like, he's like, well, Blackbeard's lying. I killed him and he's like, well, why would he lie? He's like, come on now, Steve. But he Chauncey also gives one last dig about why he doesn't believe Steed. And he's basically like you're just some bored little rich boy. Like you obviously didn't kill my brother.
And Steed gets that flashback with like his dad like dad trauma. And so I think that like that really hurts Steed the most is like not the fact that like Ed. I mean, yeah, Ed getting blamed for something he didn't do obviously bothers Steed. But the fact that, like, it's kind of the same thing that Ed was having or, like, people don't believe him, right. So Steve is like, I still can't get your approval. Even when I'm doing the things like, I I did kill him. I was responsible for that.
And you still don't believe me, 'cause you don't think I'm a pirate, right? So like, yeah. OK, so then we go to the firing squad where the act of grace comes up. And I love how Ed, it goes into protective mode immediately. And he punches Izzy for the betrayal cause Izzy's like. Hey, Blackbeard and. He just like decks him and like a cross, he deserved it. He definitely did. And like, you know damn well and like his, like, narcissistic tantrum mind.
He's probably like, Blackbeard's gonna appreciate this. I'm finally, like, helping him out, do the thing that, like, he's been wanting to do. And then Blackbeard's just like, why the fuck are you here? Why are you still alive?
Right. Get out of my face and I have a lot of things to say about Izzy and I'll say more, much more when we get to Season 2. But like for now, I I do want to say that I to your point, like I really think genuinely Izzy thought he was doing what was best for Blackbeard. Yeah. AKA like Blackbeard, the only version of Ed that he really knows. So, you know, but very misguided.
And like, it's even been made a point that like, any time that, like Steed says Ed, or like somebody else says Ed is, he's like, it's Blackbeard. Yeah, 'cause like that's all he knows. Like, he doesn't know Ed Like Ed. Just to run-of-the-mill innkeeper slash Jim the accountant. Like, that's that's it. Like, and it scares Izzy because Izzy, he knows Blackbeard for his like whimsical, like outlandish, like harebrained adventures, not wanting to settle down and potentially retire.
And even though it gives Izzy the potential to be a captain, it's very apparent that Izzy is scared for that to happen because he rely, he's codependent on Blackbeard, like 100%. And that's why he's so like narcissistic. Because with narcissists, if you're doing bad, they're doing good. And that's why he keeps wanting Ed to be Blackbeard, because that's bringing out the worst in him, meaning that he still needs Izzy and it's like so insane. But it works because it still
makes Izzy A lovable villain. Because at the end of the day, he just wants to be accepted. He just wants to be loved. He just wants to have his best friend back, which is admirable. He's just going about it all different types of the wrong
way. Yeah. And I think that at this point in Izzy's journey, he doesn't want to know Ed. Like, I think he just doesn't want to. Like, I think he can see the writing on the wall that like Ed is, you know, you know, Blackbeard is coming out of the the the Ed is coming out of the shadow of Blackbeard, basically. But you know, Izzy's trying to force him back in there and anytime like Ed comes out, like Izzy's just like go back to Blackbeard. I don't even want to know this, you know.
But he, you know, Izzy goes on a journey, which is ultimately a good character arc, but for now, it's very much denial, you know? Denial is a river in Egypt. Your husband is gay. Oh, let's see, something else I want to add from this act of grace scene. So you mentioned that, like basically what gets Steed pardoned is Poncey's like, well, that's only for real pirates. You're not a real pirate. So this will extend to Blackbeard, but not you.
And Lucius brings out the journal and he's like and he reads the entry of when they he raided that dinghy and stole the plant. And then we have the plant. And so not only is it funny and cute and he's like, Yep, he's a real pirate. I love that this is validating for Steed because he's like, you know what? You may not. This is like a parallel to when
you wear fine things. Well, basically, But from Steve's point of view, because Chauncey doesn't see him as a pirate, but Steve's gets validation that, well, my crew sees me as a pirate and he's like, that's what matters. And then that you wear fine things. Well, that was Ed's validation that like, well, the fancy rich people don't see me as sophisticated, but Ed does or Steve does, and Steve matters more than them. So I like the parallel between the two scenes.
Yeah, it's very, very nice. It's, it's. It's a really good palate cleanser. After Calico, Jack came and fucked everything up and Izzy was in A and Izzy was an accessory 'cause he started it. Yeah, no, couldn't agree more. Absolutely.
And then we go on to them essentially like working for the Brits and everything and then getting taken back to like where Steed originally is from, which I find that so hilarious for the fact that he goes to check in and the guy's like, Oh yeah, no, I don't have AI don't see the bonnet. Yeah. Steve Bonnet, he died wife Mary. My name, my wife's name is Mary. I'm not dead. And then it's it's purely like the the whole, like like stereotype or like running joke in like retail of I I don't
know, I just work here. I don't get paid enough to care type of thing, 'cause like the fact they still let him in is like, yeah, I don't understand. Why he was let in if he was dead? How are they keeping track? I don't understand. And like I don't understand how like, they're dead when like both of the brothers saw him and knew him. Like surely that would set off alarm bells. Cause, yeah, Mary was like, Oh,
my husband died, but like, also. Why did no one question later Mary for saying that her husband died? I mean realistically. Like nobody. No crap. I get that part like realistically just cause like her closer friends and like the the widow circle and stuff and we'll talk more about that later. They they end up like kind of accepting it and understanding why she ended up doing that. But, like, you have to consider, like, the people, like the townspeople. Mary is considerably like, on
the wealthier side. And like, poor people, they don't really like this, like hierarchy. They don't really have, like, the right to, like walk up to, like, a richer person and say, hey, why'd you say your husband died? I saw him at the bar. Like, they don't really have, like, the right to do that.
As as fucked up as it sounds, but like, that's just the hierarchy of it. Like So I I think it's purely Mary didn't think she was going to get caught, and if she did, she knew nobody was going to ask questions. Yeah. And also this was a time period where people would just disappear. Also, like, Steed got lost at sea. Yeah, that happened, right? He's just, he just went off. He died. I don't know. He's dead now. Yeah, it's not super far fetched. Like it was a dangerous time too
as well. And Steed's reaction was just priceless to Ed's face. Just like just. Oh my God, this is so funny. OK, yes, so active Gray. So they yeah, they their contract is like they have to serve the British Navy for 10 years, which is a long fucking time when your life expectancy is like 40 years. It's like it's a long contract. And Ed seems super unbothered by
this situation. Like it's kind of ideal like in a way for where he's at, he's like quote forced to like kill Blackbeard basically by taking this deal in exchange for a semi comfortable life with Steed. Right. And so part of that is conforming to everything that the the king wants. So like part of the regulation is like you can't have facial hair. So when Steed first sees the no facial hair, he's like Oh my
God, what happened to your face? And and they have this conversation and it's just like I'm no beard now. Like, you know, I'm just, I get to be Ed finally, like, so in a way it's like liberating for Ed, but it's very, like jarring for Steed, not only to see him, but also he's like, this is becoming real. So, like, you know, Steve has spent a lot of time living in Fantasyland. And I think he always thought, well, I can always come home to Mary if I want to if this doesn't work out.
So I think in the back of his head he clung to his past life and never fully gave it up. So to hear that, like he's legally dead. So like his, it's becoming, he's starting to have to process the fact that, like, you made this choice to be a pirate. If you're gonna do it, you have to fully do it. And you can't like cling to this like fantasy of like going home kind of thing. And also at this point, he's very much like you have a plan to get us out, right? Right, Ed, you always have a
plan. And Ed's resigned to it. He's like, no, we're just, we're doing this. We made a deal like Blackbeard's dead like, and seed. Seed seems very bothered by that, as well as. Long as he's like fully happy just folding clothes. Right. Yeah. He's like, I'm just folding and I think, and that's monotony. And Steve's like, no, I want to get back to being a pirate. And like, so I think Steed is very much like spiraling with
this entire situation, you know? All right, So then that leads to them basically having a private moment by the shore. And Steed is basically like, sulking by the sea because I think he doesn't want to be in the Royal Navy. He's legally dead. He's like, there's no hope of getting back to being a pirate. I lost my crew. He's like, what the fuck is my life right now? So Ed finds him and Ed admits that he likes being free of Blackbeard and he wants to do what Ed wants to do for once,
like he wants to be himself. And so Steve asks what makes Ed happy. And truly, I feel like Steed has been dying to ask Ed this for a long time. He's been guessing and like he finally has this chance. And Ed confesses that Steed makes him happy. And hanging out with Steed is like the most fun he's ever had in his life. And the slow smile that starts spreading across Steed's face is everything because he is
screaming for joy on the inside. And I think he's too afraid to actually scream out loud, 'cause anytime Steed's excited. He's very big with his expressions, 'cause I think he's he's too afraid to, like, burst this bubble of like what's happening right now or like scare it off by being too much or like, too honest in a way. Because I think that like being true to his feelings and like expressing them like his big feelings is something that Steed clearly struggles with.
Because I think in his marriage with Mary, it was very reinforced for him to hide how he really feels. Because the first time we saw him, like, outwardly expressed his joy, his big joy in a big way. It was when he was showing Mary the model of the ship and trying to explain, like, this could be us. We could live on the ship and, like, be pirates and do this stuff. And the way Mary completely reacted to that to be like, what the hell, Steve, this is ridiculous. We can't do it.
He's like, crushed his dreams in real time. And so I think Steve has a little, Steve has a little bit of PTSD to be like, if I express my feelings to somebody I love, it's gonna go poorly. This is also the first time that anyone has told Steed that they're the reason that he's they're happy. Yeah, it's it's true. And oh go go go so. I was just gonna say this is also the first time we see Steed and Ed actually kiss after
having an intimate moment. Yeah, it's 'cause before Steed can even respond like, Ed just like, kisses him. And then Steed whispers you make Steed happy, which is very cute and I love it. Yeah, They get to finally have like an honest moment with each other by themselves where they just like, admit their feelings out loud.
And watching this, it's just it's so sweet that I need a dentist because my teeth are rotting How fucking sweet this fucking thing is, God damn it. And I will hydrate for lesbian Jesus. Like Zoe's doing good job. We have to after mentioning their first kiss. I mean, it's such a big moment and I didn't think they were gonna do that in season one, so I was pleasantly surprised by this. Not gonna lie. Hey. Zoe and I were.
Gonna end up together. Yeah, we we were hoping and praying like we were really wanting that to happen. And of course, we can never be happy when it comes to stuff like this because they start talking about how like, they're gonna, they're gonna like, go back. They're gonna like, Ed's gonna bribe the guard to like, let Steed come. And so they can meet up and then go on a dinghy and like, be on their way and like, hopefully reunite with the crew. And then, like, it wasn't the
guard that came and got him. It was the other twin captain. Fucking Chauncey the little bitch. See, I don't respect him enough to know his name. That's why I keep saying the other twin. Yeah, I did. Not know his name Was Chauncey valid? It's just. Such a punchable name, that's why it is. Like when you said Chauncey, I was like, who the fuck is Chauncey? I don't remember Chauncey. As you shouldn't fuck that guy. I don't. Even remember the other twin brother's.
Name. I don't remember the. I don't know his name. OK. I know. I don't know. I have no idea. One thing I will say is that I love that after the kiss, the way it restarts Ed's brain. Because to me it's like, that's like the ultimate confirmation to Ed that he's worthy of happiness because Steve likes him back. He just told him. And like Ed goes into boyfriend mode and he's like, you want to escape, I'll kill a man, get a boat, we'll get the fuck out of
here. So I like the way, like he was like all about staying. And then the minute he got confirmation that Steve really likes him, he's like, let's get the fuck out of here, let's move to China. Let's. Which I would have pissed. I would love for them to actually do that and then run into Jiang. And that would have been a Facebook. Yeah, I was like, it was interesting that it was China. I know, but also interesting that when he brings up China, he's like other side of the
world. He's like, we will get new identities. No one will know us, like, it's gonna be great. And you can see Steed panicking when he says that cause, like all of this is a little too real. It's a little too much out of Steed's comfort zone in this, you know, point in time. It's not a fantasy. He's like, we're really gonna go to the other side of the world and like, be other people and, like, really give up all of this.
And so I think it's too much for Steed, which unfortunately leads us to, like, the end where Ed makes all the arrangements and Steed ends up ghosting Ed. Like, yes, he ends up with Chauncey and like, ends up accidentally killing the other brother, 'cause he trips and shoots himself in the face. But like, the guilt is too. Much like the same exact spot too? Or was it the? Opposite, Yeah, I think it was the same spot on the left 'cause when he fell, he. Liked nice details since they're
twins. But yeah, I I think the guilt is too much for Steve because he then he's like I'm a murderer and like all this stuff. And I think he thinks that he ruined everybody's life. Like he killed all these. He killed both of the brothers. He his wife thinks he's dead like. And so he, I think he goes back to quote his what he thinks is safe, which is the life with Mary and the kids. And 'cause he just feels really guilty. And by doing so he ends up
breaking Ed's heart. And Ed's like, what the fuck? And he just like, doesn't even wait beyond Sun Sunrise and he just takes the dinghy, magically finds the revenge somehow. OK, so these people can magically find others, but Steve couldn't find Ed and then couldn't find him in the boat later, but could find the whatever. Continue. You know my.
Whole My whole thing about it is, is the fact that, like, Ed immediately assumed the worst that Steve left him rather than OK, we just had this really intimate moment we were planning on like going away and getting new lives. He's not here. Obviously something had happened. Like he didn't even go look for him like, so like they're both at fault.
Steve shouldn't have left without letting him know, but at the same time, I know why he didn't do that because if he did that, he would have to come to terms with like seeing Ed see him essentially go back to pick the safer option which was Mary. And then at the same time, it makes me feel like Ed, while he wanted it to happen, he also realized, like the severity of the situation of, oh, this is getting real and arguably real fast with us just wanting to get ship and move on with their
lives and get new lives. So like, I understand both where they're coming from, but both parties are at fault. It takes two to tango steed and go to Ed, Ed and go steed. Everybody sucks in this situation. Yeah, totally. And from Ed's point of view, it's also like one of those situations where he's like, well, I'm gonna leave him before he leaves me thing too, 'cause he he doesn't he again. He doesn't know that, like something happened, like you said.
And that's maybe Steve's delayed unexpectedly. He's just like, I'm leaving you before you can leave me. And I don't. I don't like this feeling. What is this feeling, 'cause he's he's feeling heartbreak for probably the first time in his life and he's like, I I just, this needs to stop. This is too much. So Which explains when he gets back to the revenge, the way he basically Oh my God, what was it?
Wait, he responds to everybody I think in the next episode But when he like goes through his heartbreak. But I like when he gets to the revenge and Izzy's been captain for like 5 minutes and like discovers the mutiny that's happening and he like stops them from throwing a tied, tied up
Izzy overboard. Which is so, so funny because while all the drama with Ed and Steve was going on, the the crew was like working for Izzy is the fucking worst 'cause he just power trips 'cause like you said, he's a narcissist. And he's like, I'm finally, I finally got what I was owed, which is I paid my dues with Blackbeard as his second. I'm finally 1st and the crew was used to steed and they're like, I don't like this man's negative attitude.
Fuck this guy. And they unanimously even Fang and like Blackbeard's crew was like, no, Izzy, this is he's a terrible captain. We need to get rid of him. And I like when they're in the in the wherever they are together and they're trying to figure out like should be mutiny unanimous great who should be the next captain. And I love that they unanimously vote for Lou. Oh Lou, I can never get this man's name right. You're in my head now Caitlin. I'm sorry.
Oh, Lou, they they basically decide he should be the captain and. Because he doesn't want to be. Yeah, but also like, if you watched him the entire time, he's very rational. He's a good negotiator. Like, he does think of other people like, he was the one facilitating the mutiny being like, let's talk about this. Like, he really would make a very excellent captain. Like, yeah, But he's very. I like that.
Same and this is definitely an older reference, but Izzy is the Miss Trunchbull to Steed's Miss Honey. Oh damn the Matilda end of this. That is like purely how I see it is. He's nothing but like a substitute teacher in the situation and the class is not having it. And. I know Miss Trunchbull was the the fucking principle, but it still applies in this situation. Evil authoritarian figure versus nice authoritarian figure. Yeah, I totally agree with that.
But oh man. And then I I just the scene at the end where Steed ends up at the house with Mary to me, OK. When I first saw Mary in the scene, I was like, oh, she's gone full feminist now because of the way she's got like a cravat that's loose and like is in the black color is it a sipping her tea? And I was like, man, she moved on. She got a book club. She doing grill. And then when she sees him and she's just the tea starts shaking.
She's like, oh fuck, it's over like, And then we just cut away like, damn, I felt so bad for Mary. I'm like it's it's purely like a seeing a ghost type moment. Because like of Steve coming back was inevitable. She wasn't expecting that to happen because of how much he hyped up being a pirate. Also, I think she expected him. I think she expected him to actually die at sea. I think she's like, there's no way this man's going to succeed as a pirate. Like he's going to get stabbed.
Like he doesn't know what he's doing. Yeah, I was not excited to see Mary and. Then the next episode actually makes me start liking her. So I like Mary. It's not her fault she's. Also trapped. She was also trapped in a shitty situation. It's just that we're. We're seeing. The story from Steve's point of view and then I like that they came around and then the next episode give us actually explicitly give us Mary's point of view. Not to mention it was more so
frowned. Upon for the woman to leave compared for the man to leave back then. So she was trapped for her that she couldn't leave. She couldn't do what? Yep. And her kids were trapped too, because, like, kids have no autonomy. Like so. Anyway, but we will. Get into all of that in the in episode 10, our next episode. So again, we we did our best to cover all the important plot points, all the things. If we missed stuff, leave it in the comments.
