Are you getting close to retirement and wondering what comes next? Or maybe you’ve found yourself retired and you weren’t really ready for it? You’re not alone … many people have no idea what retirement is going to bring. And the internet is full of financial advice for retirement, but there's not much about what really goes on after retirement. We all know that life doesn’t end at retirement – there’s potentially two or three more decades that we’re going to have to live through. So, the big question is … WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH THE REST OF YOUR LIFE? This podcast gives you the answer. Come along with me while I figure out how to live "the life I have imagined." You’ll hear from men and women who have moved away from traditional 9-5 jobs, and from some who are retired, and you'll hear my thoughts as I make my own journey. Together we’ll figure out what comes next. This show isn’t about business and finances, it’s about life!

Making the tough decisions in one's life is what makes life worthwhile - anybody can float along following their whims! It takes some courage and spunk to do the "right thing" and stand up for your own beliefs when others think you're wrong.

Let's Chat about Carol-Chantal's Ideas

Something that Carol mentioned in the interview last week was about the Law of Attraction . This is something that I never used to put a lot of stock in – the idea that “what you think about, you bring about”. It was a bit too “woo-woo” for me originally. Of course, I’ve seen the movie The Secret, and read a lot about the idea. And depending on who you follow, there are between 3 and 7 sub-laws to the law of attraction. The general idea behind the law of attraction is that it helps you manifest ...

Let's Chat about Eric's Ideas

Hi everyone, and welcome to episode 137 of Beyond Retirement. Thanks for taking the time to hang out with me today! If you recall, I spoke with Eric Brotman last week and he talked about how life can be compared to an undergraduate program, with activities to be carried out in your freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior years of life in preparation for retirement. And he calls it graduation , not retirement, for a very good reason. If you haven’t listened to Eric’s interview yet, I recommend th...

Don't Retire...Graduate!

Eric believes completely in the idea that retirement isn't the end of the road. He's so adamant about this that he's written a book that treats retirement planning and execution like the years of university. There are certain activities that delineate the Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior years...and when you've done all those activities (and the associated extra credit activities!) you can rest assured that you've done what it takes to be prepared for the next stage of life. In his words, ...

Let's Chat about Radon's Ideas

As I say each week, if you haven’t listened to last week’s interview, stop here and go back to listen now. I was talking with Radon Stancil, a financial planner who focuses on preparing people for retirement. Radon believes that financial planning needs to be both financial and intellectual, so his firm, Peace of Mind Wealth Management, focuses on 3 key concepts – your financial needs, your legacy and your lifestyle – because they all play a role in how your retirement works out for you. I think...

They work to help their clients make the plan they need and get into the mindset required to really be "retired". Financial preparation is fairly straightforward, and provided by most financial planners, to make sure that the funds are in place to allow retirement (remember that this is when you start to SPEND the money you've been SAVING all these years!) Let's Chat about Joseph's Ideas

TRANSCRIPT: As you know, if you’ve been listening along, after each guest episode, I reflect a bit about what we discussed, trying to figure out how to relate the information or ideas to retirement life or preparation for retirement. Today is no different. Last week I talked with Joseph Hogue, who discovered early in his 9-5 career that he didn’t really want to spend the next 30+ years doing a job that he hated. Joseph Hogue is an investment analyst and an online entrepreneur. He travelled the same road as many people, getting a good education and starting to work in a solid job. But then he decided that this couldn't be all there is to life... there are other ways to make money that allow one to avoid working as an employee at a job you don't like, just to save money and get out of i...

The idea of working for part of the year and travelling for the rest of it isn't new and many people dream of being able to do it successfully. Some even manage to do it for awhile. But there are a lot of things to consider when you're deciding to take on this lifestyle. One of the biggest considerations, of course, is how you're going to fund it. Let's Chat about Diana's Ideas

The idea of "lifequakes" or "lightning-strike moments" is taken from the book "Life is in the Transitions", by Bruce Feiler. To summarize it, there are moments in our lives that cause upheaval and result in our taking a different path than we were originally taking. We can't see these moments clearly when we're experiencing them, but looking back on our lives, we can identify at least some of the moments that caused changes in our life trajectory. Retirement is one of those moments, for sure, an...
