"Do good and avoid evil" is the first principle of conscience and also the elementary precept of all human practice. To "act" in accord with this principle, I must in my conscience constantly go out beyond myself toward the good. This is the basic direction of the transcendence that is a property of the human person. Without this transcendence--without going out beyond myself and somehow rising above myself in the direction of a "good" willed and chosen in the light of truth--I as a person, I as a personal subject, in a sense am not myself (John Paul II, Person and Community).
By choosing the good and avoiding evil--by acting this way, I myself become good and am good as a human being. The moral value reaches to the very depths of my inner life and structure as a human person, a body with a rational soul, who has been given the freedom to "choose good...and avoid evil. The opposite would be an action not in accord with my conscience, a morally evil action. I then become evil and am evil as a human being.
