#178: Canadian Truckers, Communism and St. John Paul II
Karol Wojtyla, who would become Pope John Paul II, was born in a free country. But by the time he was a young man he would be a witness to the horror, the evil, and the violence that man is capable of inflicting on man. At twenty he had already lost his mother, father, and brother when the Nazi’s, followed by the Communists, invaded Poland. Sent to work in a chemical factory young Karol would later describe this period of four years in the world of labor as the most decisive period of his life. He would later reflect and come to understand that oppressive governments including Socialism and Communism had their anthropology wrong. They did not understand what it meant to be a human person. All over the world they attempted to eliminate God, eradicate freedom, and undermine the very dignity of the human person created in the image and likeness of God.
