Get a behind-the-scenes look at how some email marketing tactics use fake reply chains and snarky responses to push you into action, along with a breakdown of why these approaches hurt real podcasters like us. We demonstrate how common manipulation tactics in email pitches exploit our instincts and outline verification steps, such as checking timestamps and authentic replies.

You also learn how this pitch misses the mark for audio-only podcasts looking to make waves on YouTube. We explain why claims of gaining "5,000 new viewers" are hollow if your podcast only features a static image. We provide steps to identify and avoid misleading offers, allowing you to concentrate on effective growth strategies that genuinely engage your audience.

The Setup

Bryan EntzmingerBryan Entzminger

I'll close the loop here for now. That's how this week's bad Podcast pitch starts out. It comes to us from Eric, who's a listener of the show. This is Bad Podcast Pitches, and I'm Bryan Entzminge. As I've mentioned before, this isn't a name and shame show. It's a show where we look at some of the bad pitches that we all get as podcasters, podcast editors, podcast producers, and then we highlight some of the unexpected risks. And we also talk about what could have been

better. As a mentioned, this came from a listener. If you've received a pitch that you'd like me to use, send that to pitchesadpodcastpitches.com if our last pitch sounded disingenuous, this one takes it to a whole nother level. This pitch starts out with I'll close the loop here for now. And then it has an email thread that goes after that. That looks like it's a bunch of responses, but Eric has told me that this is the first time that he's heard from this

sender. And now I've seen this kind of thing before in other pitches that aren't necessarily related to podcasting. And honestly, it really bothers me because I feel like it's trying to use our kindness and our conscientiousness against us. Because if you think about it, you receive one of these emails, it looks like you've been ignoring them for a while and they're just trying to help you out and so you're more likely to respond. And that really rubs me the wrong way. But

The Pitch

anyway, here goes. I'm going to start what is in the was the what appears to be the first in this email chain, and I'm going to call it a pretend chain. It might be real, but I really kind of doubt it. So here goes. The first email.

A Remington Steele Podcastand I have questions. The kind that make YouTube nervous. It's got the same thing again. Interesting. I just watched it and that's the stuff that makes YouTube nervous. Your podcast should be a discovery machine, but instead it's getting lost. Here's the truth. YouTube has zero idea who your episodes are for. People look for your videos and YouTube shrugs. The fix, Quick and simple. Think it's worth a chat. Your next batch of viewers are ready to

find you. They just do not see you. Now onto the second email. Your podcast should be a discovery machine. Instead, it's getting lost. Hi there. Your podcast has peculiar content, but right now it's like a secret even YouTube forgot about. Your next 1000 viewers are waiting for you. The fix won't even eat into your coffee break and could finally get your content seen. Are you ready to stop letting your audience slip away? Think that's

worth a quick conversation? I'm going to pause here. This reads like AI to me. Maybe it's not. I don't know. That's what it reads like to me. Here's the third email. This sequence happens. Oh, there we go. I just investigated Steele Watching: A Remington Steele Podcast and I'm stunned. Cannot unsee this. Your podcast should be buried

My Thoughts

in comments. Instead, it's getting algorithmically murdered. Here's what nobody tells you. YouTube's algorithm is working against you. People are binge watching your competitors and you don't even show up on page 10. The kicker? A fix so obvious it hurts. Want me to just show you? Your next flood of viewers are just one metadata fix away. They are just watching inferior content instead. Now onto the fourth email. And again, this all appears to be

just one email that's kind of broken up. Anyway, more about that in a second. The fourth email in the thread, just kind of working from the bottom back. The fix, quick and simple. Think it's worth a quick chat? That's the subject line. And then hi there. Your podcast deserves way more attention, but right now it's getting ignored. Your next 5,000 viewers are watching someone else instead. The fix won't even eat into your coffee break and you could finally get your content seen. Starting

to notice a pattern here. I don't know. Are you ready to stop letting your audience slip away? Think that's worth a quick conversation? Now onto the fifth email. I reviewed your Steele A Remington Steele Podcast content and saw a small opportunity, not a big one anymore. Anyway, viewers are already looking up topics you publish about, but your episodes don't always appear in search. I mapped out a few easy opportunities to improve visibility with light optimization. We Would you be open to

a short chat so I can walk you through what I found? And then here's the final email, which is actually, I think, the first one that was sent, because I really believe that these were all just one email made to look like a bunch. But anyway, final email. I'll close the loop here for you. I'm sorry, I'll close the loop here for now. If improving search visibility becomes a priority later, feel free to reach out anytime. Sorry, do you kind of

notice the snark there? Anyway, now, as far as these emails go, like I mentioned, it appears to be a multi email thread, at least at first glance. But here's one of the things I noticed as I was looking through it. There's only one date and timestamp and it's only on the final one. Now maybe this has changed, but most of the time when I get emails that have a bunch of replies and forwards, most of the time those email programs include the date and timestamps that were in those email

chains. So if I received a response to five previous emails, I would expect to see a total of six timestamps, the most recent and then the previous. And I don't see that in here. But I'll reserve some of my other thoughts until after I share what Eric wrote. And it's a lot. It's full of little nuances and I'm really thankful that he shared this because he's got some great thoughts about this. So now these are Eric's contents and I'm going to read them as best I can, word

for word. As you may have noticed, sometimes I don't read that. I don't get it. All right? But I'm going to try. So here's what Eric has written. Here's the thing about this. If you look at this email, you would get the impression that I have received multiple emails from this person. To the best of my recollection, I haven't. I may be wrong. They may have gone into the spam folder or gotten cleaned out, or they might have just gotten deleted. Deleted. I can't say for sure.

But my gut tells me that these were all part of a single pitch and that there were no previous emails sent. But I could be wrong. Interesting thing is that they are talking about viewers on YouTube and how they're going to boost our visibility on YouTube. Don't do a video podcast. We do an audio podcast. Yes, it appears on YouTube using their RSS ingestion.

But does anybody who has any kind of knowledge about YouTube really believe that an audio podcast with a static image on YouTube is going to get 5,000 or even 1,000 viewers? We don't even get a thousand listeners on our audio podcast. The reference viewers are looking up topics the reference viewers are looking up topics we publish about. But we only publish about one topic. The Remington Steele television show from the 1980s. The website that this email

appears to be affiliated with is impressive looking. They have testimonials from big name podcasts. But are they legit? If this was truly a legitimate company promoting a legitimate service, surely they would have investigated our podcast enough to know that there's no way we would be in the market for their services. And yet they pitch. I agree with

Eric. I think this is just one single pitch broken into several fake emails to try to manipulate the emotions and heighten the probability of a response without somebody taking the time to consider things. Also, like Eric shared, this show is cross posted to YouTube with a static image. So I question what little tiny bit of metadata they could tweak. And honestly, I question how they could be stunned by what they saw like a static image show. I don't expect that to

perform well. I've done it to get my show up there, but I don't expect that to perform well. I would certainly not be stunned by a static image. I might love the content, who knows, but I wouldn't be stunned by that. So unless they're stunned by that, I don't get it. And I also wonder what opportunity they just literally could not unsee,

especially related to metadata. Now, if I saw a video show that was just that static image, the opportunity I might not be able to unsee is what if you made this as a true native video show instead of static image over audio? But from a metadata standpoint, I don't know. I mean, keyword stuffing, keywords are so 2005. Like it's not even YouTube kind of ignores them. But anyway, maybe they've got some magic. I don't know. It's a little bit hard to guess. And I don't necessarily.

I don't necessarily trust that. I think that they've got what's going on. But anyway, enough about that. This is a show that or this is an episode based on what Eric shared. And I'm really thankful that he shared that because this has been an interesting thing for me to look through and to realize I'm not the only one that receives these things that look like an email and they're multiple emails and they're really not. So Eric, thanks for sending this in. If you have a show or

Send Your Bad Pitches

a pitch that you'd like me to bring onto the show, send that to me pitchesadpodcastpitches.com I would love to have the opportunity to look through a pitch that you've received and maybe share that with everybody. And if you're interested in sharing your website as well, I'd be glad to link that out. I've done that for Mike Wilkerson in the past when he's shared stuff as well. Eric, thanks so much for sending this in. Next time I think I'm going to be pulling one from my own mailbag we'll

have to see, but make sure that you subscribe to the show. It's available in all of the major podcast apps except for Spotify. Just didn't really feel like putting it there. We can talk about that later. And if you want to check out the video right Now, I'm recommending TrueFans M as the way to check out the video version of that, which is me waving my arms around like a madman and staring at a teleprompter. Until next time, I'm Bryan Entzminger and this is bad podcast pitches.
