Massage is there to treat the muscle discomfort and soreness that accompanies back pain. You may have temporary relief from massage, that is because often muscular discomfort from back pain is often simply misdiagnosed as muscle spasm rather than looking at the underlying cause of that muscle spasm. This means that while that massage may help you temporarily, it’s not going to address any underlying condition - so it will lul you into a false sense of security.

Deep massage may feel very good at the time, but essentially break down locked up tissue by causing micro trauma to the area. Athletes or people who do a lot of sports workouts may get muscle stiffness due to build up of lactic acid - for them a myofasical release is likely to reduce their muscle stiffness. Those with back pain that results in muscle stiffness and tightness should not indulge in massages because of the inflammation it causes when the tissue is being worked on.

Alternatives to massage would be a massage gun. We use the Hypervolt in the clinic, it’s much less painful and much more effective in a shorter period of time. What we would class as a ‘rubby rubby’ massage, one that is relaxation based and not going to dig in deep like a deep tissue massage, are likely going to be very helpful as the mental benefits of being able to unwind for an hour may well be very beneficial for you.
