well hello friends and welcome to
1:45
another Ask Zac I hope you are doing
1:47
well today we're gonna talk about Guitar
1:50
Hero's and gear and how that kind of
1:53
influences us and how to use that in a
1:55
good way and how that can get unhealthy
1:57
and how to try to try to you know kind
1:59
of be careful of that also I'm going to
2:02
dissect a few of the licks from the
2:05
little intro piece that I played that I
2:07
think are fun and and a little pause for
2:12
the cause if you're enjoying the show
2:14
think about subscribing and if you've
2:17
been watching for a while go to askzac.com
2:20
and please support the show I've
2:23
got nice mugs and t-shirts and such also
2:27
please go to askzac.com to check
2:31
out the featured article which is my
2:33
2005 interview with Tom Bukovac so it
2:37
was my first you know big interview I
2:40
ever did and it was Tom's first major
2:44
interview in a in a guitar magazine so
2:46
that's a lot a lot of fun go please go
2:48
check that out and if you want to stay
2:50
up with that content get on my mailing
2:53
list at askzac.com alright
2:56
enough of that let's let's talk about
2:59
the little intro piece that I was
3:00
playing kind of has a touch of that you
3:04
know working man blues thing so it's an
3:07
e and kind of basing it off this you
3:12
know kind of 9th chord shape except
3:14
you're just playing the you know a d and
3:18
g strings and you're kind of climbing up
3:22
minor third major third fourth to fifth
3:26
so it sounds like this
3:40
you take it up to a witch I guess you
3:44
could just slide it up here but I
3:45
[Music]
3:58
and you know of course you know go back
4:02
to the e then you have this B suspension
4:07
to b7 and then you have a G major 7 to
4:15
an A
4:16
[Music]
4:26
and then he goes back to the other thing
4:28
that that G major seven to a I picked up
4:33
from Danny Gatton he did this amazing
4:36
video called rhythm guitar for hot licks
4:39
it was the one the last things he did
4:41
before he passed away and of course I'm
4:45
a huge Danny Gatton fan and but of his
4:50
instructional videos a three that he did
4:52
to me that one's the most useful for
4:54
anybody I think anyone can watch that
4:57
and get a lot from it some of the other
4:59
ones are a bit more advanced and and I
5:02
like the tips and tricks one also I
5:05
don't really like the other hot licks
5:07
one that he did tell a master it's just
5:09
the recording quality is really bad on
5:11
it and also the stuff he's playing is
5:14
harder to pick up but the rhythm guitar
5:17
wanted to me is just pure gold and I'll
5:20
put a link to this description in the
5:22
description to it you can get it on
5:25
Amazon Prime I think it's like 10 to 15
5:27
bucks something like that but it's it's
5:29
very worth it so anyway yes he did this
5:31
kind of thing in the video he did
5:34
[Music]
5:37
[Applause]
5:39
and that's going between an e7 and a D
5:42
major 7 and so I really liked that and
5:44
so I kind of put this in here as a
5:46
transition in between the the B
5:48
[Music]
5:54
then as far as when I went kind of into
5:57
you know playing some a little bit of
6:00
soloing the the bins over the forecourt
6:05
over the a I really liked it I'm not
6:08
sure if I got this from Roy Buchanan or
6:10
Jim Campolongo or or who but but it's
6:14
just going and the great thing about the
6:23
lick is you don't have to do the bins
6:26
perfectly because you're sliding up so
6:29
it's just you need to kind of get it
6:31
going and then you you slide up to the
6:33
to the actual notes that are in a chord
6:37
[Music]
6:41
I'll shake sounds good
6:44
another thing and I I know I stole this
6:47
from Reggie young he played it on used
6:50
on a couple different things but the
6:52
first time I heard it was on the
6:54
Hagrid's think I'll just stay here and
6:56
drink and I think everyone's familiar
6:57
with this kind of you're like an E you
7:03
familiar with this kind of thing that
7:08
kind of you know blues lick and this is
7:12
kind of a variation of that because
7:13
instead of going and so you're you're
7:21
taking your pinky and you're you're
7:24
playing this you know c-sharp note and
7:28
then you're pulling off and hitting this
7:31
B note and know that's a really fun one
7:41
all right so I think that's uh yeah
7:45
that's that's good on now on some of the
7:47
things I played in that intro piece so
7:51
today I wanted to talk about guitar
7:53
heroes and gear purchases and such and
7:56
just how that can be good and also how
7:58
it can be negative and trying to kind of
8:01
get that in a proper perspective
8:05
so having guitar heroes of course is
8:08
great having influences is great even
8:10
trying the gear that they use is fine
8:13
you know so you find out you know what
8:15
kind of strings or picks or amps pedals
8:17
guitar or whatever that your hero uses
8:20
there's nothing wrong with that and
8:22
nothing you know wrong with trying it
8:24
out I think when it becomes unhealthy in
8:27
my opinion is when you start hammering
8:31
away at being just like a guitar player
8:34
and expecting everything that they have
8:36
to work for you now you might find that
8:41
you know certain aspects of your hero's
8:43
gear does work well for you and you know
8:46
and you can continue to play with that
8:47
but to get all the stuff that your hero
8:50
uses and just keep hammering
8:52
way it's just kind of a dead-end road
8:56
and gear is a trap you know to begin
9:00
with I mean we all are obsessed with
9:03
gear to a degree but you really need to
9:06
be playing and gear needs to be in the
9:08
aspect and in the context of playing so
9:12
I'll give an example for myself you know
9:15
in the early 90s the first good
9:18
Telecaster I ever had was a James Burton
9:22
signature model and of course I was
9:24
completely obsessed with James Burton
9:27
still living down in South Texas and I
9:30
was so proud of the fact that I had
9:32
gotten my gear money you know gig money
9:34
together and I was able to pay for a
9:37
guitar that was about it was like
9:39
fifteen or sixteen hundred bucks and so
9:43
I got the signature model James Burton
9:45
tele and it was black with gold
9:48
Paisley's and had three lace sensor
9:50
pickups of course it was kind of like a
9:52
nun tremolo strat but with a Tele body
9:54
and neck on it
9:55
this is good guitar but it wasn't really
9:57
a pure Telecaster and you know it's a
10:01
variation it's a cool guitar but I got
10:04
one and then I got I found out what
10:07
strings he used which are really light
10:09
he's is a tin for a B string and he uses
10:12
a 12 for a g string and I started trying
10:16
to do that I started trying to use a
10:18
metal you know finger pick like he does
10:22
and it just it it didn't work it didn't
10:26
work well for me the strings were just
10:28
too light for me just and it just didn't
10:31
work and so you know luckily I kind of
10:35
moved on and then of course started
10:37
getting obsessed with Albert Lee and
10:39
started using you know what strings and
10:40
pick that he used I did you know read an
10:45
article on Reggie Jung and started
10:46
playing a Fender medium pick and I
10:49
started using their the rounded end and
10:51
that ended up being a good fit you know
10:55
for a long time I still use that some
10:57
though I have switched over to using a
11:00
a blue chip pic and been enjoying that a
11:05
lot but though this is the thinnest pic
11:07
they make it's a 35 which is like a
11:10
fender heavy and I've really really
11:12
liked that but an example another
11:15
example besides jeans Burton's a string
11:17
gauge that you know didn't work for me
11:20
is I love Eric Johnson and and so of
11:24
course I got one of his guitar picks and
11:27
Noah didn't make me play like Eric
11:29
Johnson in fact I really hated this pick
11:32
I mean it works well for him but it
11:35
didn't work well for me at all to me it
11:37
was so bright and funnily enough the
11:40
other day I was having a discussion on
11:43
the interweb on picks and Guthrie Trapp
11:47
chimed in and he said that this is his
11:49
least favorite pick he said he hates him
11:51
so we loved her Johnson so another thing
11:56
you know when working for Brad Paisley
11:59
you know sometimes I would let you know
12:05
local guitar players play through Brad's
12:07
rig and so there they were playing a 68
12:11
Paisley into the big dr. Z you know rig
12:14
and yeah even when they play Brad slick
12:18
they licks they didn't sound like him
12:20
you know there's so much to do with your
12:22
heart and your hands and everything and
12:24
you know but there's nothing wrong with
12:27
trying those things you know you you
12:29
know you try those things you find out
12:30
well I do like dr. Z amps or Telecasters
12:33
or that gage of string or that type of
12:36
pick so try what your heroes use but
12:41
don't start just you know hammering
12:43
yourself against the wall like you know
12:46
if only I used the right strings and
12:49
pick and get the right coyly chord you
12:52
know I'm going to sound like you know
12:53
Jimi Hendrix or wherever well whoever
12:55
else so yeah try to keep a healthy kind
13:00
of view on on gear think about playing
13:04
first and then think about gear a little
13:08
less and and you know feel free to try
13:12
things and if they don't work you know
13:14
sell it move it on but don't just keep
13:17
hammering on you know so-and-so used a
13:20
light gauge pick you know it's like
13:21
saying you want to be like Glenn
13:23
Campbell and use a light pick you know
13:26
with with tins and and well guess what
13:29
that might not work for you
13:31
so anyway so yeah I think that just kind
13:37
of resonated with me recently you know
13:41
thinking about because I've had a bunch
13:42
of times where I got obsessive about my
13:45
guitar heroes and you know just played
13:48
there you know bought their gear and
13:51
whatever else and it you know it just
13:53
didn't didn't work out so tried to kind
13:56
of you know do my own thing I've had a
13:58
lot of fun with strings lately been
14:00
going on a string journey kind of with
14:02
y'all right now I'm using an interesting
14:07
gauge run going 10 13 15 24 32 42 and
14:13
these these are just these are standard
14:16
ernie ball strings that I had around and
14:20
you know I enjoyed the pure nickel
14:23
strings from pyramid but I have a bunch
14:25
of strings here at the house and so I'm
14:27
just trying different combinations and I
14:29
really like this so this is basically a
14:31
mix of a 9 set you know the low end and
14:34
to me that's really balanced so to have
14:37
that 42:32 you know 24 and then have a
14:41
little heavier east ring because to me
14:43
that's what I do battle with is getting
14:45
a good sound on the high E string and
14:48
the B string and then the the g string I
14:51
can use a fairly light string of 15
14:53
which is really easy to bend and so I've
14:57
been having a lot of fun with that and I
14:59
don't think I can't think of anyone else
15:01
per se that uses that string gauge I
15:03
mean if there is I don't know about it
15:05
I'm just kind of trying my own thing and
15:07
then the blue-chip pick thing you know
15:09
of course kind of tried it because of a
15:11
Red Bull car because Keith Williams sent
15:15
me one but you know this pick isn't like
15:18
you know used by somebody famous or
15:21
anything in fact it's one of their
15:23
thinnest
15:24
so you know so you know there I have
15:27
some elements that you know kind of just
15:30
trying to do my own thing and find out
15:33
what works for me instead of just being
15:34
glued in on all that's not what you know
15:37
Reggie young or James Burton or whoever
15:40
used so that's enough for today I hope
15:44
you enjoyed it you know of course I was
15:46
using my Dino caster with Ron Ellis
15:49
pickups using my little pedal board I
15:51
just had the compressor and the echo
15:52
part going usual deluxe reverb yeah hope
15:58
you all have a great day we'll see you
15:59
next time bye bye
Your Heroes Gear Might Not Be Right For You - ASK ZAC EP 30

Most guitar players make many gear purchases based on what their heroes use. This is fine in itself, but what is more difficult, is to know when their gear is not working for us. And to keep from getting too philosophical, I also dissect some of the licks and parts to "Quarantine Man Blues" that I play at the top of the show.
