Episode description

With the recent visit  with a real-deal 1950 Broadcaster, I had the chance to experience the unique tonal options that Leo Fender's original blend control offered over your run-off-the-mill tone control. The only problem, was that awful #1 position, that put a suffocating blanket over the neck pickup. I started searching for a modified wiring scheme, and I found my episode from a couple of years ago with Rick Holmstrom, Mavis Staples' guitarist and bandleader. In it, he described his modified Broadcaster blend wiring that made the first position just a slightly lower volume, and slightly darkened neck pickup sound in position 1. I tried it, and loved it, and am sharing it with you now.

I also share 2 YouTube Channels I have been enjoying, Adam Levy's, and Shane Theriot's.

on today's ask Zack I'm going to talk

0:02

about a modified broadcaster blend

0:05

control that's much more usable than the

0:08

kind of vintage layout also I'm going to

0:11

talk about two YouTube channels that

0:13

I've been watching a lot lately and that

0:15

I really want to let y'all know

0:19

[Music]

0:27

about well hello friends and welcome to

0:29

ask Zach yes we are going to talk about

0:33

the uh broadcaster blend and

0:35

specifically a modified version of it

0:38

that I think is much more

0:40

usable and uh again I'm going to talk

0:43

about two YouTube channels that I've

0:45

really been watching a lot lately I well

0:48

I preface it by saying that I haven't

0:50

had as much time to uh to spend on you

0:53

know watching YouTube and so I've become

0:55

more selective and these have been two

0:57

shows that I've really enjoyed enjoyed

1:00

and have been watching a lot in the last

1:02

couple months that I really you know

1:04

wanted to share with y'all so let's uh

1:07

of course thank uh the patreon members

1:11

and everyone that supports Me by uh you

1:14

know putting some money in the tip jar

1:15

the super thanks of buying a T-shirt and

1:19

such I uh I really appreciate that if

1:21

you want to find out about patreon uh

1:23

there's a link in the description also I

1:25

need to thank um clling foil which is

1:28

sponsoring Today's Show of course cling

1:30

foil is a wonderful product that you can

1:34

put on anything to make it hip cool and

1:37

now all right let's let's dive in

1:43

so the Vintage broadcaster wiring scheme

1:47

just to kind of get us up to speed is in

1:50

the number one position it's the uh it's

1:54

the sound where it's going through a a

1:56

big you know cap and resistor and where

1:59

it goes down volume and also gets really

2:01

dark and has that kind of sound like

2:04

that it's uh I think it's awful and

2:07

unusable and then when you go to the

2:09

number two sound it's the neck pickup by

2:13

itself no uh you know just with the

2:16

volume control and that's it this knob

2:17

doesn't do anything then when you go to

2:19

the number three position you get the

2:22

bridge pickup with it turned all the way

2:24

up and as you turn it down it Blends in

2:27

the neck pickup which I think is just a

2:29

fabulous thing

2:30

it's just you have this one sound that's

2:32

kind of

2:33

unusable and so what was really funny

2:36

about this was when messing with the

2:38

broadcaster that when I did the

2:40

broadcaster episode a couple weeks ago I

2:42

thought this is such a great wiring if

2:44

there were only someone that had come up

2:46

with a a a modified version of this

2:49

where the the first sound wasn't so

2:51

crappy and then I remembered I did a

2:55

talk right here in this room with Rick

2:58

Holstrom that plays with Mavis stap

3:00

on the modified broadcaster wiring that

3:04

he and another guy had come up with and

3:07

I even had a schematic posted and

3:09

everything but I had never tried it on

3:11

anything so I put this

3:14

um modified Rick

3:17

holmstrom uh I'll call it you know

3:19

modified broadcaster blend wiring on

3:23

this guitar and I just love it and it's

3:27

it's pretty simple it's simpler than the

3:30

the Vintage broadcaster stuff it doesn't

3:32

have as many components um just in a

3:35

nutshell you need you know regular 3way

3:38

switch to 250k pots and then you need a

3:41

0047 or your cap of choice and then a

3:44

56k

3:46

resistor and uh yeah it's really simple

3:49

and I'm going to put a uh you know

3:51

there'll be a link in the description to

3:52

a wiring diagram for this but uh here is

3:56

kind of the way it works so this is the

4:00

modified first position sound so what

4:03

this is that instead of going through as

4:05

big of a cap and resistor this is going

4:07

through a 047 cap and a 56k resistor so

4:12

you get you basically get the neck sound

4:16

through and it just brings down the

4:18

volume just to touch and it brings down

4:20

the tone just to touch where you have

4:21

kind of a nice Rhythm sound

4:25

[Music]

4:40

[Music]

4:48

okay now you go to the number two

4:50

position and so it's removing that cap

4:53

and

4:53

resist and you get the neck pickup and

4:57

it's kind of like the the no load

4:59

version of the neck pickup so

5:02

[Music]

5:06

was

5:08

[Music]

5:17

versus some might say that's kind of

5:19

subtle but I don't think so I mean it's

5:21

kind of the difference between what you

5:22

would want when you're kind of backing

5:25

up someone versus taking a solo and uh

5:29

it's it's really useful and that and

5:31

that's the way Rick holmstrom uses it um

5:34

then uh you know of course you when you

5:37

get to the back position you get the

5:39

wonderful blend control which I just

5:41

love and one of the things that he had

5:45

suggested I don't think Rick did but one

5:48

of the guy Steve that came up with the

5:50

uh the wiring in the first place he

5:52

suggested using a no load pot for this

5:55

blend control and I tried that and I

5:58

didn't like it because it ended up it

6:00

creates too much of a kind of a stop a

6:02

detent and you know the bridge pickup

6:06

gets louder and it gets more a little

6:08

more strident and in your face and I

6:09

felt like the bridge pickup kind of

6:12

could use being loaded down and uh but

6:16

you can easily swap that out you can put

6:18

a no load pot in there and uh and get

6:21

that but I like it to where the blend

6:24

control is kind of always active as it

6:26

were and you can just easily you know

6:29

blend some in and uh I really like just

6:32

taking a touch off so this is like full

6:35

up no neck pickup

6:38

Blended turn the volume up

6:40

[Music]

6:43

kid but if you just back it you just

6:45

take it down just a touch

6:51

[Music]

7:08

thanks to bill hullet for that lick um

7:12

it just kind of it just really kind of

7:14

adds it's kind of like if you're a

7:16

Gibson guy which I'm not but if you're a

7:18

Gibson guy the best Gibson players tend

7:21

to keep that selector switch in the

7:23

middle and they just kind of keep

7:25

blending back and forth now they will

7:27

use the neck pickup by itself or the

7:28

bridge pickup but a lot of times they'll

7:30

live in that middle position on the

7:32

selector switch and they'll keep you

7:34

know working that and I think it's just

7:36

a really cool uh ability to kind of have

7:39

it

7:41

[Music]

7:42

where okay that's a little bit too much

7:45

I can just roll it back some and instead

7:47

of it getting dark it just gets

7:55

fatter cuz it's not like all of a sudden

7:57

I started sending like oh he's got both

7:59

pickups on that's not really the honest

8:01

to goodness Bridge Telecaster sound

8:04

sorry for the weird voice um but it's

8:08

not until you really get all the way

8:10

down when this is full up that you get

8:13

the full

8:15

on and I don't know why I always want to

8:18

play Bad Chad Atkins type uh my bad

8:21

imitation of Chad but uh but I do uh I

8:26

think also I'm biased against the two

8:28

pickup telecasters sound and I I think I

8:31

like the blend because then I'm able to

8:34

kind of pull in just enough of the neck

8:37

pickup to fatten things up but without

8:39

it going fullon dual pickup sound and uh

8:43

I just really like it so again this is a

8:47

you know most of the time you're only

8:49

going to need a 56k resistor to do this

8:52

and of course I'm have a uh you know a

8:55

wiring diagram on my website there'll be

8:57

a link in the description

9:00

uh now let's talk about why you wouldn't

9:02

want to do this so if you are a big dual

9:07

pickup user where both of them are quote

9:10

equal volume as it were I'm not saying

9:12

equal height and everything like that

9:14

then this is probably not for you uh

9:17

also if you use the tone control a

9:20

lot uh and if you really want to darken

9:23

things a lot this is not for you for me

9:26

I don't necessarily want to darken

9:27

things I want to fatten things

9:30

and so for me the blend is fantastic

9:32

also it kind of gets on the other wiring

9:34

scheme that I like which is where you

9:37

don't wire the neck pickup to the tone

9:39

control so you get this in this number

9:41

two position you get the neck pickup

9:43

without the tone control then you have

9:46

the neck pickup through this kind of

9:47

little bit of tone control that knocks

9:49

it down then you have again no tone

9:52

control on the neck then you have Bridge

9:55

with the blend control so anyway

9:59

something to think about and uh you know

10:02

and again if you're like me and you have

10:03

a couple of telecasters it's nice to uh

10:06

wire something up differently and have

10:08

it uh have it fun so let's uh let's talk

10:13

about these YouTube channels that I like

10:16

so I like you you're probably busy like

10:20

I am and uh and I just don't have as

10:23

much time to spend on YouTube and so

10:25

I've you know sometimes I do podcasts

10:28

while I'm driving driving around and

10:31

usually it's not music oriented um but

10:34

then when I do have time for YouTube I

10:36

really want something frankly that's

10:38

quality and I want something that's

10:40

going to inspire me and I want something

10:42

where I'm going to learn something and

10:44

so the two channels that I've been

10:46

spending the most time recently are one

10:48

with the Shane Tero and Adam Levy both

10:53

those cats have amazing YouTube channels

10:56

who are amazing Pros they have long

11:01

resumés of great artists that they've

11:03

played with they're also great Educators

11:05

and they've both written books and just

11:09

have a huge amount of uh of history as

11:14

as good teachers and they do they

11:16

present themselves well very different

11:18

presentations so you know Shane is kind

11:21

of a you know New Orleans kind of

11:23

Louisiana guy and he has a little bit

11:25

more you know a little bit more what

11:28

should I say uh Tony chat's you know or

11:31

or slap your mama on it uh and Adam Levy

11:34

is much more uh he's much more you know

11:38

calm subdued now I'm not saying that

11:39

Tero is like a used car salesman or

11:42

anything like that but U yeah so let's

11:45

just talk about Shane uh Shane has been

11:48

doing mainly lesson videos recently and

11:51

they've all been really really good

11:53

they're gold um and he just has a huge

11:57

history of you know playing with holl

11:59

notes you know playing with tons of you

12:02

know Dr John and uh you know all sorts

12:05

of cats then from Louisiana and then of

12:07

course with playing you know being the

12:09

MD with darl Hall and and his show he

12:11

ends up playing with all sorts of

12:13

artists and uh I think he just does a

12:15

great job he has good hands he gets a

12:17

good tone uh and then you know Adam Levy

12:20

uh I don't know Shane Adam I do know

12:23

I've interviewed him and uh just really

12:25

love his playing his tone his Outlook

12:29

and he's recently done a series on 10

12:32

Essentials you know for for the guitar

12:34

and and playing and musicianship and I

12:37

just really have enjoyed every single

12:39

episode of that also and uh and I love

12:43

of course the fact that Adam has been

12:45

playing a a Telly it's a looks like it's

12:47

a you know 69 or or early' 70s and it

12:50

has a A fullsize humbucker in the neck

12:52

and of course he makes everything sound

12:54

fantastic I think it's Lenny Stern's

12:57

Telly that's kind of on Lo long-term

12:59

loone to Adam but he's such a great

13:01

player and such a great guy and so those

13:04

are two channels that uh I would I would

13:07

be watching because I think there's a

13:09

lot of channels where it's just kind of

13:11

guys holding court and talking about

13:12

stuff and I think it's nice when you're

13:14

able to learn things and uh and that's

13:17

kind of challenged me in that uh I'm I'm

13:19

going to start getting back to showing

13:22

licks and such also I've been doing more

13:25

on uh Instagram and uh and Tik Tok and

13:29

one of the things I I showed that uh

13:33

that lick that I played the uh the just

13:35

call me Lonesome lick that uh you know

13:40

goes something like this

13:45

[Music]

13:50

the and it's you know really a a cool

13:54

look and and a cool part and um and I

13:57

just love the fact that it has this uh

13:59

you know this this Bend where you're

14:01

bending the low E string down to the

14:07

[Music]

14:08

a you because you could have play

14:12

it but he played it much cooler because

14:15

Bill Hull's a a boss so uh yeah so yeah

14:21

those are two YouTube channels that you

14:23

ought to check out and uh I'm going to

14:25

start being good about uh doing some

14:28

lessons on the my show and and trying to

14:30

keep things educational not just

14:32

historical so all right guys we'll see

14:35

you next time bye-bye
