Episode description

I love Peavey amps from the early-to-mid 1980s, because I grew up with them in my favorite music shop, Clawson's Music in Corpus Christi, TX. In my last 80s Peavey episode, I looked at the Special 130, that is a killer amp, but is heavy, way too loud for most gigs, and at times a bit non-intuitive due to the mid-shift and multiple gain controls. My buddy, Mike LoPinto, who plays with Chris Stapleton, clued me into the Studio Pro 40. It checks all of the boxes, as it is easy to carry, has plenty of volume, a full sound with an Eminence 12 inch speaker, and is pretty cheap at the current going price of $100-$200. For me, it is a great grab and go amp, and the perfect amp to take to the gig as a backup to my Headstrong Lil King, or my Fender 1965 Deluxe Reverb.

on today's ask Zack we're going to talk

0:03

about my favorite little PV practice amp

0:05

it's you know 100 200 bucks tops the py

0:09

mid 80s Studio Pro

0:14

[Music]

0:22

40 all right guys welcome again to ask

0:25

Zack hope you're doing well today you

0:28

know of course cou uh years ago I did an

0:32

episode on the PV special

0:34

130 and I really liked it used it but it

0:39

was just a pain in the butt to haul

0:41

around just cuz of how heavy it was it

0:43

was it's a just a heavy amp part of it

0:46

has to do with the cabinet the

0:48

Transformer it's got a heavy speaker in

0:50

it and it was just louder than what I

0:53

needed for most situations and uh I

0:56

would barely turn the volume up and so I

0:58

ended up selling it

1:00

and the same guy that convinced me to

1:03

get one in the first place uh Mike

1:06

leento who plays guitar with Chris

1:09

Stapleton I you know I told him about

1:11

the situation how I'd sold a special 130

1:14

and he said what you need to get is the

1:16

Studio Pro 40 and I was kind of like eh

1:19

I'm kind of done with the PV thing and

1:21

he said no you really need to uh check

1:24

one of these out so I ended up going

1:25

over to his house and I played through

1:28

it and I was like wow it sounds you know

1:31

just as good as a special 130 it's kind

1:34

of easier to

1:35

use but uh you know then he said pick it

1:39

up and I lifted it up and it was light

1:42

uh not as tone Master light but I mean

1:45

it was a much lighter than the special

1:48

130 so yeah so we're going to dive in a

1:52

bit uh about this amp and just just have

1:55

some

1:56

fun all right first thing I need to

1:59

thank my patreon members and everyone

2:01

that's done uh you know put money in the

2:05

tip jar or super thanks or yeah I really

2:08

appreciate it you guys are fantastic and

2:11

and mean the world to me and you're what

2:13

keeps the show going so thank you if you

2:15

want to find out more about patreon or

2:17

anything else there's information in the

2:20

description all right so the Studio Pro

2:23

40 was you know part of pey's lineup in

2:26

the uh in the mid 1980s it started out

2:29

just this Studio Pro then it became the

2:31

40 then it became the 50 and then it you

2:33

know kind of went to the 112 went to

2:35

different stylings but this is my

2:38

favorite uh era of this amp and so

2:42

there's the 40 and there the 50 that are

2:44

the same amp and then you know the

2:46

earlier amps and the later amps are a

2:47

little different but I really like these

2:50

again I found this one that was uh you

2:53

know I bought it from M leento my friend

2:56

and you know bought it for 150 bucks but

2:58

you know a lot of times they're 150 200

3:01

bucks and it's just you know it's loud

3:04

enough that you could gig with it you

3:06

know I mean it's loud enough to get you

3:08

fired and uh and then it's just really

3:11

easy to carry around and it's nice to

3:14

have uh a fun inexpensive amp that uh

3:19

you know you could take to a biker rally

3:21

gig or something that you don't want to

3:22

take a head strong amp or a vintage

3:25

Fender or something like that or it's a

3:28

great backup amp so you know you could

3:32

have this in your trunk of your car or

3:34

with you you know you know cuz it

3:36

doesn't take up a lot of space you know

3:38

it's you've got an excellent backup amp

3:40

that doesn't have tubes and it doesn't

3:42

have you know the uh all the maintenance

3:47

issues that uh the amps that we love

3:51

have so it's got a lot of advantages

3:54

over the special 130 uh one it's not as

3:59

loud which I don't need 130 even if it's

4:02

transistorized Watts I don't need that

4:03

much volume uh two again you know it's

4:07

it's light three it's simpler and easier

4:10

to use so it doesn't have the mid shift

4:14

which to me that was kind of a it's a

4:17

nice control but it's like I don't have

4:20

to be able to boost or cut all these

4:23

different midrange frequencies I just

4:25

need a good mid-range knob and so it

4:27

just has straight up treble middle and

4:29

base

4:30

and then it has a good you know sanding

4:32

spring reverb uh you

4:38

[Music]

4:44

[Music]

4:47

know you it'll do the uh Baker field you

4:51

know thing or it'll do

4:58

[Music]

4:58

[Applause]

5:12

you know it'll uh it'll do your spooky

5:15

stuff but yeah you know and it's kind of

5:17

the same thing you know The Sweet Spot

5:19

in between two and three

5:22

uh uh the the mid-range and the

5:26

highs uh they can get out of control

5:28

really fast especially on a

5:29

transistorized amp and so as you can see

5:32

I have the mid-range turned pretty low

5:34

it's actually at like 1 and a half and

5:36

here's what it does if you start turning

5:38

it a

5:51

high the highest two will get out of

5:54

control pretty quick

5:57

[Laughter]

6:02

does have a pull thick which is kind of

6:14

interesting you can see I've got the

6:16

lows turned up

6:18

somewhat about four and a half uh and it

6:21

can get you know

6:25

pretty you uh one of the Great things

6:30

again I I mentioned the weight and it

6:32

still has it's a size of a Princeton but

6:35

it has a 12-in speaker and it's louder

6:37

than a Princeton uh and the 12-in

6:39

speaker is not like one of those black

6:41

widows or a

6:43

scorpion it's a straight up Maiden

6:46

Kentucky emminent speaker ceramic magnet

6:49

and just really good simple you know 40

6:52

50 watt speaker and it's a great mate

6:55

you know for the amp um it does have a

6:59

pre pre and post

7:00

control and it has saturation now it

7:03

doesn't have the channel switching per

7:05

se but uh you know you can turn up the

7:08

saturation knob and you can uh you know

7:11

you can get a little dirt on it here I'm

7:12

going to turn the post down a little bit

7:33

[Music]

7:46

turn it up a little bit more

8:00

[Music]

8:05

and it sounds okay um you know is that

8:08

the greatest overdrive sound in the

8:09

world hopefully you'd have a you know

8:11

something something else but this could

8:12

do in a pinch and if you have the foot

8:15

pedal which I mean you can buy one when

8:18

you hit the uh you of course it's a two

8:20

button foot switch that you can get for

8:22

these one of them turns the Reverb off

8:24

and on and the other one would turn the

8:26

saturation off and on so you could kind

8:28

of have in a pinch you have your uh

8:30

overdrive sound right there yeah these

8:33

are uh just yeah they're they're really

8:37

fun now I'm just going to say right now

8:39

would I rather have my Little King or a

8:42

vintage Fender amp or something like

8:43

that yes but there's situations where

8:46

you don't want to take those and these

8:49

things are under $200 and you can find

8:51

them all the time uh on Craigslist

8:54

Facebook Marketplace whatever it is and

8:58

uh yeah and they're really easy to clean

9:00

up I cleaned this thing like crazy I

9:03

completely disassembled it which was

9:05

really easy all I needed was a

9:07

screwdriver and uh you know took the

9:10

face plate took the the electronics out

9:12

cleaned it with deoxit I actually have a

9:15

a big sink that I was able to put the

9:18

entire cabinet in and I was able to just

9:20

wash it off and then use some tox

9:22

cleaner on it I washed off the grill

9:25

cloth you know took maybe 45 minutes to

9:28

completely clean

9:30

and uh you know spray deoxide in all of

9:32

the uh in all the pots and just make

9:35

sure and also and all the Jacks and

9:37

everything make sure everything was

9:38

working right and yeah it's just you

9:42

know one of those little amps that uh

9:44

you know really will do a lot and when

9:48

you're talking about the difference

9:49

between This and like a Princeton or you

9:52

know a nice tube amp what you're talking

9:55

about as far as the difference to me is

9:57

like there's a transient quality there's

9:59

like a there's a really fast attack

10:03

thing with with a transistor I stamp

10:05

it's like it's responding so fast it has

10:07

a really low uh or maybe it's a high

10:09

dampening factor and so you know the

10:12

speaker kind of becomes active and comes

10:14

to rest really quick and

10:18

so uh I find that I I kind of have to

10:21

maybe roll the tone control back some on

10:23

the guitar or you know of course here

10:25

you know roll the highs down a fair

10:26

amount and you just kind of have to get

10:28

right with it to a to to a degree but

10:31

it's still a very good and very usable

10:33

sound and you know something where you

10:35

could you know do a gig and and be happy

10:38

and uh yeah and I have a number of

10:41

friends here in town that have these and

10:44

they've done videos with them without

10:46

telling people and people think it's

10:48

it's other amps and guys have run

10:50

sessions with them and stuff so this is

10:52

really a cool little amp that uh I would

10:55

I would get on your your Craigslist your

10:58

Facebook Marketplace place and uh

11:00

wherever and look around and and find

11:02

one of these and pick them up because

11:03

they you know usually I mean unless

11:06

they've been abused they just need a

11:08

little bit of uh you know tender loving

11:10

care as it were and then their uh fun

11:13

and great little amps that will uh and

11:16

they're easy to carry up and down the

11:19

stairs yeah unlike the special 130 that

11:22

I thought was like I was carrying a tank

11:23

around all right so there you have it

11:26

the uh mid 8s heart

11:29

py made in Mississippi with a Kentucky

11:34

eminent speaker Studio Pro 40 get you

11:38

one
