How you prepare for a gig dictates whether you will be asked to work with that client/artist again in the future. In this episode, I show how I prepare musically, what questions I ask the client, how I choose what gear to take, and the importance of having backups for everything. A very practical AZ episode.

by your mistakes and so I've made a lot

of mistakes through the years and it

always has to do with not being prepared

not being ready with your gear or not

through the years I've kind of developed

and so I'm just going to pass those on

you know in the last like year and a

half i have not liked most i have not

gigged as much

but i do get you know calls every once

in awhile so of course i had the uh you

know gig that i played down on Broadway

uh earlier this year and then

just recently i got a call from my

friend Paul bogart to go play a couple

casino shows with him in Tulsa

just to kind of give you a little

information on Paul

Paul is a wonderful artist uh

very much in the

classic country

kind of but also

real cowboy rodeo guy so

Paul you know is you know has won you

know trophies and such as a as a roper

and he's a wonderful artist he's a great

songwriter

and

you know I've had the pleasure of

playing with him off and on over the
3:33
last you know about 13 years

so i was his full-time guitar player

before my children were born

and then you know when things got real

serious working for true tone and i had

children and it wasn't really didn't

make sense for me to take vacation time

to go play gigs and also be away from my

babies i stopped playing with Paul

and but I've been very lucky in that

I've been kind of his uh

his first string backup guitar player

for the last 12 or 13 years so what that

means is about every every year or two i

get to play a handful of gigs with him

and it's a lot of fun but also it's uh

it's uh it you know it has its

challenges because

it's a lot of material to learn and then

just fit in

with the band because usually when I've

played these gigs there's never been any

rehearsal at all

I'm

basically there to fill the slot that

the the other guitar player who's a

professor at Belmont

uh named nick so when nick palmer is out

i get to fill in for him which means
4:45
basically i need to just fit in that

slot

and basically be him

and so part of the

part of being able to do the the gig

ride is understanding what the

expectations are and so i kind of walk

into it knowing that

you know that's what I'm supposed to do

so uh

so i i try to

get uh you know set lists and i get all

the music

and if they have charts i get all the

charts

and so i was very lucky in that uh he

has a lot of

number charts for his songs and that

that is extremely helpful

and uh basically i start diving in and

really working on the tunes

this is a casino gig

uh playing two nights in Tulsa

and because of that it's three one hour

three hours of music is a lot of stuff

now luckily

uh you know a good portion of that

is you know cover tunes so playing

things like ring of fire working man

blues you know little sister

western swing things and stuff like that

all those things are way up my alley

and things that i know and things that i

can easily brush up on and know those

the harder part of course is his

original tunes

uh now some of them I've played through

the years but you know of course every

year he's writing new material and

releasing another album so

I'm always having to relearn

the you know the the the original

of course

learn new original material

so what i do

is i get charts and i start listening to

these songs like crazy so i start i want

these songs to be kind of second nature

where i can hear them in my head all the

time so that when he calls the tune

i can hear that intro in my brain

then

I'm looking at the charts

uh if there's not a chart I'm I'll make

a chart which sometimes it's actually

better to have to make your own charts

because you know it makes you really

listen more intently

another thing that i will do

is uh of course more recently I've used

this fender mustang micro which is

really neat because you can stream

stuff from your phone into it so that

way i can have my headphones in

and late at night you know when the kids

are asleep and and stuff like that i can

i can keep practicing on the songs at

you know this has been a uh a wonderful

tool so all of Paul's tunes are on

legitimate albums

and then i can just play along with them

and uh and and figure out the parts that

that i need to play

now another aspect of this which you

have to find out from the artist or or

is what is the actual instrumentation of

the gig going to be okay so that has to

how many players are there going to be

also you have the additional kicker of

you know kind of part of that is

are we going to be playing with tracks

some of you probably aren't familiar

with this but in Nashville circles

it's pretty common to have

additional tracks going on so you might

have a five piece band but then there

might be some additional

uh acoustic guitar

some background vocals things like that

maybe some shaker and different things

so you need to to know

are there gonna be tracks and if there's

tracks then you need to know all the

kickoffs you know how the kickoff is

gonna go on the track because it's gonna

be coming through your ears

and all of a sudden you're gonna hear

band because also it's stressful for

band guys when all of a sudden you've

to be a new guy and there's no rehearsal

or anything you're going to get a sound
