After last week's 2-hour interview with Don Kelley, I decided something shorter was in order.
My old Deluxe Reverb started exhibiting a funky rattle, and I had to fix it. Usually, I play while a friend pushes on the amp's tubes one at a time with a pencil eraser. I show how to use a looper pedal to help you find the rattle.

well hello friends today we're going to
0:16
get super practical and uh all of you
0:19
have probably run into two brattle at
0:21
some point if you are a tube amp owner
0:24
so i'm going to send you kind of a a fun
0:27
hack for helping you find the tube
0:29
rattle and
0:31
and then eliminate it
0:33
so
0:35
the only tools i used
0:37
were this looper which you can use any
0:39
looper and this pencil you can use
0:42
mechanical or wooden but it just needs
0:43
to have a
0:45
a good eraser on there and so i'm going
0:47
to show you how to
0:49
you know i use this looper to play an
0:52
offending note that makes the rattle
0:54
happen and then i can get behind the amp
0:56
and i can press against each tube
0:59
with the the little eraser there and
1:02
then i find it and then replace that
1:04
tube
1:05
enjoy
1:08
well hello my friends
1:10
today we are dealing with
1:13
a microphonic tube rattle so this is
1:17
this started probably about a month ago
1:20
on my old this is my 1965 deluxe reverb
1:24
still pretty clean i've had it for about
1:26
a decade
1:27
i uh have a good cover for it and that's
1:30
uh
1:31
really what helps it stay stay nice
1:33
looking so
1:35
anyway regardless of how nice looking uh
1:37
the uh you know tubes wear out
1:41
so
1:42
i was trying to figure out how can i get
1:44
rid of that because normally when i do
1:46
this i try to have a friend with me who
1:48
can play
1:49
something and
1:50
and get it to rattle and then try to
1:53
figure out how to make it stop
1:54
well guess what i'm here by myself you
1:57
know at home
1:58
and uh don't have any uh i'm not gonna
2:01
have my son or someone do that so then i
2:04
remember what about a looper pedal so
2:06
i played i kept playing different things
2:09
until i found the exact note that would
2:11
really make it take off
2:13
and then i looped it so here we're going
2:15
to turn up the old
2:18
clone looper pedal which i like to use
2:20
for practicing and such but
2:28
[Music]
2:40
[Music]
2:42
okay
2:43
so
2:44
you're hearing it uh rattle and uh
2:47
that's that's enough so we're gonna stop
2:50
the video and i'm going to figure it out
2:52
i'm going to use a uh
2:55
usually i like to use a pencil with a
2:56
good eraser on it unfortunately all i
2:58
had was this mechanical pencil
3:00
uh but it does have a enough of an
3:03
eraser on it so i'm going to uh
3:05
you know tap on the tubes and press on
3:08
the tubes and see which one when i tap
3:10
on it it gets worse and that's probably
3:12
the one that needs to be replaced so
3:14
i'll be back in a minute
3:17
okay guys so i know you didn't get to
3:19
see it but basically what i did
3:22
was
3:23
while the sound was coming out of the
3:25
amp
3:26
i uh
3:28
you know pulled off the covers carefully
3:30
up
3:31
and
3:32
would press on the tube
3:34
with
3:35
the end of this pencil again you know we
3:37
don't want to get shocked
3:39
and if
3:40
you feel in any way uncomfortable with
3:42
this don't do it and take it to attack
3:44
but uh you know i was just trying to
3:47
find where the rattle was coming from
3:49
and so especially you want to be careful
3:52
uh getting near the rectifier of the
3:54
power tube because you will you can get
3:55
uh
3:57
really uh
3:58
those are really hot and you can get
4:00
really shocked from them but uh
4:03
yeah so it ended up being yeah that
4:06
rectifier tube all the way at the end
4:08
so this is not a uh
4:10
a uh
4:12
you know an old one in fact i have some
4:15
old tubes in it uh in the preamp section
4:17
but these are
4:18
the electro harmonics tongue saw you
4:21
know reissue
4:22
tubes that are in there that i really
4:24
like that unfortunately hard to get
4:25
right now
4:27
because of the whole uh war and
4:29
everything that's going on over there
4:31
but uh anyway so i'm gonna have to see
4:34
what kind of rectifiers i've got lying
4:35
around and i've got to
4:37
let that tube cool off before
4:40
i change it out all right
4:43
we'll be back again
4:47
and we're back
4:49
and this is our culprit
4:52
so this is uh this is the rectifier tube
4:55
that's been in the amp for
4:58
10 years uh at least
5:01
i got i got this amp back in 2010
5:04
and i took it to uh
5:06
todd sharp
5:08
and he re-tubed it now i have put some
5:11
some new power tubes in there and i've
5:13
put some other preamp tubes in there
5:14
that have gone microphonic but but the
5:16
rectifier tube has been good but you can
5:18
see that it's got some
5:20
it's a little uh a little discolored
5:23
here we're probably from heat
5:25
and then when you
5:27
when you you know flick on it it's not
5:30
terrible
5:33
but you can hear
5:36
some noise um
5:38
so then
5:40
i look through my stash and
5:41
unfortunately i do not have any
5:44
nos of any nice american japanese or
5:47
european made
5:48
gz 34 5 ar
5:51
and so this looks to be the same tube it
5:54
doesn't say
5:55
a ruby on it
5:57
but
5:58
it has pretty much the exact same
6:03
you know looks to be the same
6:04
base and markings they look to be both
6:06
you know made in china
6:08
tubes when i was just under the
6:11
ruby name
6:13
so it doesn't have that high pitched
6:15
thing going on so this is what i'm going
6:17
to try now i've had some guys say really
6:20
bad things about chinese uh rectifier
6:22
tubes and they can
6:24
blow up and such so i hope that's not
6:25
the case and if anyone you know out of
6:27
the goodness of their heart wants to
6:29
send me a nice
6:30
uh
6:31
gz 34 5ar4 you know just
6:35
contact me and i'll give you my mailing
6:37
address but this is what we're going to
6:38
put in there and let's let's see what
6:40
happens
6:43
all right now we've switched out the
6:45
rectifier tube
6:47
and now we're going to we've got it
6:49
plugged back in and we're going to turn
6:52
the old
6:55
clone looper up with the horrible note
6:59
[Music]
7:09
you know there's a little bit still on
7:11
there but it's certainly a lot better
7:12
than it was so i'm gonna have to live
7:15
with that for now and probably have to
7:17
look for another uh rectifier tube so
7:20
all right
7:22
hope you learned something
7:24
hope i did too
7:26
well i hope you enjoyed the little
7:28
little hack uh
