I recently had access to a variety of 1957-1974 Fender guitars, and I wanted to spotlight the change in finishes when Fender started using polyurethane on necks and bodies in mid-1968. That change did not mean the total elimination of lacquer/nitro finishes, it meant that nitro was used less, but at times was still used for topcoats, and it was nearly always used on the headstock after the CBS black logo was applied into the early 1980s.

Special thanks to Dan Strain for making his 1957 Telecaster, and 1972 Stratocaster available, and of course for the use of his workbench.

AKA you know him as Dano Caster we're at
0:23
his shop
0:25
and we had a wide variety of 50s 60s and
0:29
70s fenders and so I kind of wanted to
0:32
take a chance to show you the difference
0:34
between
0:35
Nitro and polyurethane polyester kind of
0:39
finishes and so
0:41
and and don't think I'm saying I'm an
0:43
all-out expert here there's some things
0:45
that we just don't know because we
0:47
weren't there when these were made but
0:49
we're gonna try not to jump to a bunch
0:51
of conclusions and just going to show
0:54
you some examples
0:56
and really the big transition year is
0:59
1968. that's kind of where you're going
1:02
to see a big change in the Finish
1:04
actually some happens a little bit
1:06
before that but you're just going to see
1:08
it as we go so starting off this is Dan
1:11
strain's 1957 telecaster and I want you
1:15
to see the amazing checking that's on
1:18
this and the amount of rust that's on
1:22
the bridge and the control plate this is
1:25
a really gorgeous guitar
1:27
and I want you to also notice the uh the
1:31
checking
1:32
you know actually not a whole lot of
1:34
checking on the
1:36
on the headstock and neck and just uh
1:40
the way it looks
1:42
also uh I'm gonna flip this bad boy over
1:47
I love the wear on this I love the uh
1:50
you know the uh the pitting on the neck
1:53
plate I love this wear
1:57
um this guitar is notable because this
2:00
is the model or for the um Dan's 0.88
2:04
soft v-neck the measurements and such
2:07
are taken from uh from this guitar
2:10
all right so we've seen the 57 we're
2:14
gonna jump forward and we're gonna get a
2:16
a 67 telly
2:22
all right so now we've jumped a Whole
2:25
Decade
2:26
so now
2:29
on this there's probably you know what's
2:31
called Fuller plast underneath here and
2:35
we don't know if that's some type of
2:36
poly or what but you can see like this
2:39
white undercoat here and then of course
2:41
this is a blonde finish but you can tell
2:44
this blonde is pretty different from the
2:48
uh the blonde that we saw on Dan's uh 57
2:53
again this is my 67 tele
2:56
and here you can see on the neck it's
2:58
got a fair amount of
3:00
wear and such and then there's some fine
3:04
checking
3:06
on the on the headstock
3:09
now this is really the tail end of nitro
3:13
finishes on the neck
3:17
um
3:18
because uh you know not not long after
3:21
this you're going to see that you're
3:22
also
3:24
on the finishes on the body it seems
3:26
like not long after this in 68 you start
3:29
seeing finishes that are glossier blonde
3:32
so we're going to switch out to another
3:35
to a Bixby tele of mine
3:39
and so now we've got both of them
3:42
so here we've got my 67 and this this
3:46
one of course has been modified a bit
3:50
but you can see that the the Finish is
3:53
is darker it's less kind of wheat
3:56
looking and I wonder how much of it has
3:58
to do with you know smoke and such or
4:02
how much has to do with this finish
4:04
actually being different because this
4:06
seems to be a heartier finish that's on
4:09
this somewhat later 67 telebody so but
4:15
uh yeah they definitely are aging
4:18
differently in the finishes look very
4:21
different especially as you look at
4:25
the body
4:28
you know the back
4:30
and here you can see
4:32
the back here
4:39
all right let's take this and let's grab
4:44
the 1969 neck
4:47
all right
4:49
so now we're going to compare
4:52
necks that are less than two years apart
4:58
so here
5:00
you have
5:01
the 67 neck that looks to be all lacquer
5:04
and then you have the 69 neck that is
5:09
pretty definitely a poly neck again you
5:13
go back and forth even up to the
5:16
headstock you don't see any checking at
5:19
all
5:20
it does have wear the Frets are actually
5:22
completely gone on this neck
5:24
but here you just go right over here to
5:28
the 67 neck
5:29
and you see you know all this checking
5:32
and such of course this is when they
5:35
first returned to
5:38
you know the actual Maple neck where
5:40
it's got the skunk stripe this one does
5:42
not
5:44
um
5:45
yeah so 68 seems to be when
5:50
these necks stop having the lacquer
5:53
Nitro finish and it seems like you know
5:56
mid 68 or so and definitely by 69 it
5:59
seems to be a mostly polyester finish
6:03
now we're going to see some examples
6:05
where the headstock is a darker color
6:07
and I think we're going to pull out a 72
6:10
Strat now
6:14
okay
6:20
so this is a 1972 Strat
6:23
and as you can see
6:25
this has a lot of cool checking on it
6:27
and with this
6:30
it would be easy to think is this a
6:33
combination of poly and lacquer we don't
6:36
know but that's what that's what kind of
6:39
my assumption is because it has this
6:41
really cool you know cracking in the
6:44
finish and uh it seems like it could be
6:48
poly with a a lacquer coat that's over
6:52
the top this is a an all original 72
6:57
Strat of of Dan's and here's where you
6:59
get really interesting so here up on the
7:03
headstock you're going to see how much
7:05
darker the headstock is and that's
7:07
because they were using the poly finish
7:10
on the neck and then they would put the
7:12
logo on and then they would just spray
7:14
lacquer over top and so this one has
7:18
gotten a lot darker probably because
7:20
it's seen more UV
7:22
raise and so this one does not this one
7:25
is pretty much the same color it might
7:27
be a touch darker than the rest so
7:30
we're gonna
7:31
show one more we're going to bring the
7:34
Bixby tele back
7:37
and we're gonna
7:40
show it
7:42
and show how it
7:44
has aged
7:47
this one
7:49
now on when you again this is this is an
7:51
older body but this neck is probably a
7:54
73 to 75 neck and so when you get up
7:58
here you can see that same thing where
8:01
the uh the headstock is darker than the
8:05
rest because of the uh the lacquer that
8:08
was put on there and it just ages more
8:13
and it seems to be the later in the 70s
8:15
or you know at least past 71 or so it
8:18
just seems like you see a lot of this
8:20
you know where the where the headstock
8:22
just gets a lot darker and sometimes the
8:25
fingerboard with the Poly on it will
8:27
still look like you know a bowling alley
8:30
floor or something like that but uh yeah
8:34
these are really cool I just thought you
8:37
guys would enjoy getting a chance to see
8:40
uh some of these finishes and just how
8:45
different they can look and how they age
8:47
differently and and also just kind of
8:51
help you in kind of being able to
8:53
identify Nitro versus polyurethane slash
8:58
polyester finishes and I have no qualms
9:03
about playing a guitar that has a poly
9:05
Finish versus a a Nitro finish no no
9:09
problem with that at all I think it's
9:11
either a good guitar it's not a good
9:13
guitar
9:14
I'll say this so this is a 69 neck again
9:19
and you know it is most definitely a
9:22
poly finish but it's really thin and
9:24
really hard it's not that gooped on
9:26
finish that you start getting much later
9:29
in the late 70s you start getting this
9:32
really gooped on finish but this this
9:35
poly neck has a uh yeah has a really
9:38
good feel doesn't feel you know overly
9:40
sticky or any anything like that and
9:43
then just just for Giggles we'll uh
9:46
we'll look at the at the neck heel
9:49
of course you see a three which is the
9:52
code for Telecaster Mar which is for
9:54
March then you have 69 which is the year
9:57
and then B which is the standard width
9:59
of uh one and five eighths and uh yeah
10:03
people sometimes mistakenly think it's
10:05
the third of March but no it's uh then
10:07
that would make it where uh most of the
10:09
necks made throughout the 60s were all
10:11
made on the on the on the same day on
10:13
different months but uh yeah later on
10:17
you get different stamp codes that uh
10:19
some of them have similar designations
10:22
but then there's another one that's on
10:24
this uh you know 73 to 75 neck that's a
10:28
lot harder to decipher so
10:32
all right guys I hope you even enjoyed
10:34
this look at Nitro versus poly and and
10:40
Dan's dog giving us a little bark to say
10:42
that say that they're still there all
10:44
right guys we'll see you next time bye
