In a recent Livestream, I was asked if there was any certain piece of gear I was looking for, and I responded that I would love to find a good old (1930s-50s) acoustic guitar. I then followed with that I was not in a position to afford something like that, and someone mentioned Baxendale Conversions. I found that Scott Baxendale takes old Kay, Harmony, Silvertone, and Regal acoustics from the 1940s-1960s, and converts them into instruments that are scarily similar to same era Gibson and Martins. In today's video, I lay out what Scott Baxendale does to these vintage budget instruments to make them take flight with much greater volume, tonal range, and much better playability. In the video, I am playing a 1950s Kay, that has been converted into an 8-string mandocello, but I hope to find a 6-string conversion soon.

Gear used in this video:

2021 Baxendale Mandocello conversion of a 1950s Kay acoustic.

well hello friends and welcome to
0:40
another Ask Zac today we're going to
0:43
talk about baxendale conversion guitars
0:46
and mandicellos
0:48
and uh yeah we're going to talk about uh
0:50
scott baxendale a little bit of his
0:51
history how i found out about them how i
0:54
ended up getting this mandicello the
0:56
process that they go through in
0:58
remanufacturing
1:00
uh you know an old guitar so just to
1:02
kind of give you the the nickel version
1:05
uh a little over 20 years ago scott
1:07
boxendale uh pioneered the the process
1:11
of taking old
1:13
harmony k regal silvertone acoustic
1:16
guitars that most of them were made in
1:18
Chicago in the same factory and they had
1:20
ladder bracing on them
1:24
and he uh converts it to where it has
1:28
uh x bracing
1:30
and completely redoes the guitar refrets
1:33
it you know resets the neck all this
1:35
stuff so we're gonna
1:36
go into all of that
1:38
and
1:39
and it's it's fun it's a it's a great
1:41
story it's a great story of these
1:42
guitars kind of being redeemed
1:45
so while you're thinking about it uh
1:48
please go down in the corner and hit
1:49

1:56
tip jar information in the description
1:59

2:16

2:18

2:20
check that out at asksac.com all right
2:22
let's dive in
2:24
as i kind of alluded to what i really
2:26
like about this is it's kind of a a
2:29
story of redemption
2:30
so these old guitars that were uh you
2:33
know kind of
2:34
upper level student models you know they
2:37
uh
2:38
they kind of got relegated to wall art
2:41
or put in a closet or put underneath the
2:43
bed because they a lot of them are have
2:45
ended up being unplayable because the
2:48
action has gotten so high and
2:51
you know and plus they were a little bit
2:52
thuddy sounding with the the ladder
2:54
bracing on them
2:56
so
2:57
these guitars get
2:59
got a new lease on life because of the
3:01
processes scott vaxendale uh performs on
3:04
them
3:05
so just to you know kind of dive into
3:07
what he does
3:09
is
3:10
he takes one of these guitars so this is
3:13
a a k
3:14
that uh this now this is a mandicello
3:16
but he does this on the guitars also
3:19
he takes the you know either the top of
3:21
the back off but the point is is that he
3:23
gets to the uh the bracing on there and
3:26
like i said there's ladder bracing
3:28
on the back and then also on the top so
3:30
just the bracing on the top
3:32
he removes that and he puts scalloped
3:35
x-bracing on there that's his own design
3:39
then
3:40
he well probably before that he pops the
3:42
neck off
3:43
and the neck is going to be reset but
3:46
also it's going to be the frets are
3:48
going to be removed and the fingerboard
3:50
is going to be planed down
3:52
and what you can do in that process is
3:53
these old necks have kind of moved where
3:55
they're going to move to a degree and so
3:58
you can deal with any irregularities in
4:00
the fretboard at that point
4:02
so then he refrets it puts a new nut on
4:05
here puts new nice tuners on there
4:09
the guitar gets a new bridge and saddle
4:12
and the neck angle
4:15
you know is uh is set to the optimum
4:18
level for uh for best playability and
4:20
tone
4:21
and so what you get
4:23
is you get a guitar that's probably you
4:25
know close to 50 years old it's old wood
4:29
uh usually you know it's you know many
4:31
times it's solid spruce maple mahogany
4:35
sometimes you have some other woods used
4:37
most time the fretboard is Brazilian
4:40
rosewood and that's just kind of what
4:42
was used for
4:43
all level of instruments you know even
4:45
like the dan electro's had big you know
4:47
slab Brazilian rosewood fretboards on
4:49
them
4:50
so you get a really good old guitar that
4:52
now starts to compete with
4:55
vintage instruments made by you know
4:57
martin or Gibson
4:59
and again it's just so nice that these
5:02
old instruments are given another lease
5:04
on life instead of being relegated to
5:07
wall art or
5:09
or just being put underneath the bed
5:12
they get to be played again and and what
5:14
wonderful
5:16
instruments they are you also have the
5:18
green aspect of this
5:21
which
5:22
you know you have these instruments that
5:23
are now being able to be played
5:26
that
5:26
no spraying a finish had to be done very
5:30
little wood was needed for the bracing
5:32
so it's
5:33
it's just kind of a a very uh friendly
5:36
uh you know for on on that aspect but i
5:39
think more than anything i like the fact
5:41
that these old guitars get to have a
5:43
have a new life they get to be redeemed
5:45
so how did a little bit about scott
5:48
uh scott
5:50
you know who's been a repairman and
5:52
builder for many many years
5:54
he worked for George gruen here in
5:56
Nashville for a period of time
5:58
he was in dallas and owned the Mossman
6:02
guitar brand for a while and during that
6:05
time he made this just a fun side note
6:08
for me because I'm a James burton fan
6:10
he uh he made the Mossman acoustic that
6:12
burton played on the Roy Orbison black
6:15
and white night live
6:17
uh you know video so uh you know of
6:19
course he plays his paisley telecaster
6:21
quite a bit but he also plays this
6:22
beautiful uh Mossman guitar that scott
6:25
built for him
6:27
later on
6:28
scott got into this um
6:30
you know process of uh
6:33
of rehabilitating or remanufacturing
6:36
what have you these uh these old guitars
6:38
and he was in Athens Georgia for a while
6:41
and then just at the end of 2021
6:43
beginning of 2022
6:46
he moved to santa fe new Mexico
6:48
which if you haven't been there you
6:49
ought to check it out uh great beautiful
6:52
place and uh and in Santa fe he's uh he
6:56
has his a facility there but he's also
6:58
he's working with stay gold guitars
7:00
which is a shop there that specializes
7:02
in you know high-end acoustics and
7:04
vintage acoustics so they are
7:07
partnering and so he'll be offering his
7:09
instruments for for sale through stay
7:11
gold so you can check their website to
7:13
see what's available as far as these
7:15
conversions also i believe you can still
7:17
send in
7:18
your k harmony regal silvertone acoustic
7:22
you know from the 50s or 60s also
7:25
yeah
7:26
so let's go a little bit into this
7:28
mandicello so this is kind of um
7:32
a lesser you know i mean it's not it's
7:34
an item that that scott doesn't do as
7:37
much but he does this on this certain
7:39
model k
7:41
which I'm sure you've seen these around
7:43
they have you know they have a small you
7:45
know kind of parlor size body
7:47
but what really
7:49
kind of makes them not a great six
7:51
string acoustic is they're pretty narrow
7:53
at the front at the at the nut here
7:56
and so what scott does on these is he
7:58
turns them into mandicellos
8:01
and uh
8:02
i of course uh
8:04
i've always i've been a mandolin player
8:07
but i've always wanted some type of
8:09
lower
8:10
tuned mandolin you know type instrument
8:13
and so that's why my first vaccinedale
8:16
conversion
8:18
is a uh
8:19
a k mandicello
8:22
so the only thing he really does
8:24
different on this of course is he plugs
8:26
the headstock and then re-drills it for
8:28
eight holes
8:29
and then of course you know you have a
8:31
you know you have a custom-made
8:34
uh bridge and saddle here
8:37
so a true mandicello would be tuned down
8:39
to c below the e on a guitar
8:42
and he he sends them
8:45
where they're tuned d
8:46
uh let's see
8:48
it's d-a-e-b that's how he shipped this
8:50
instrument but i kind of liked it tuned
8:52
up a little bit higher and so i tuned it
8:55
up to
8:56
e b
8:57
f-sharp c-sharp
9:00
and if you'll notice here
9:02
all of the strings are
9:04
unisons meaning the same pitch
9:06
and same octave except for
9:09
this f-sharp is is an octave
9:14
and so it gives it a little bit of a
9:17
kind of
9:18
bazooky
9:20
12-string you know kind of sound so here
9:22
i'll just play a little bit more on this
9:26
[Music]
10:03
really really pretty sound
10:06
[Music]
10:20
yeah a lot of uh it's got a lot of
10:22
volume a lot of resonance
10:24
the uh the changing on an instrument
10:27
when you when you take it from ladder to
10:28
x bracing what it does is it kind of
10:31
takes some of the the focus away from
10:33
the mid-range
10:35
and it gives it kind of more high highs
10:37
and low lows it kind of opens it up so
10:40
some people like ladder bracing and
10:41
there's nothing wrong with that but it
10:43
it does open up these guitars and x
10:45
bracing was kind of reserved for
10:48
higher end instruments because it took
10:50
more labor to do it than than to just
10:52
put a couple of pieces of wood across
10:55
the top in a ladder bracing fashion
10:58
so
10:59
that's uh yeah that's kind of again i've
11:02
got this tuned you know e b f sharp c
11:05
sharp
11:06
uh
11:07
really have enjoyed playing it and this
11:09
has really inspired me
11:11
to uh you know at some point find
11:14
a six-string guitar to send off to have
11:17
converted because i've really
11:18
really enjoyed this a whole lot and uh
11:22
you know to have the guitar sent off and
11:24
have it done uh you know you need to
11:25
contact stay gold guitars
11:28
and
11:29
i believe the process is around a
11:31
thousand dollars so because of all the
11:33
heavy work they have to do it also just
11:36
depends on how much has to be done to
11:37
your instrument if you're sending one in
11:40
they can also do a pickup this has a k k
11:43
mini pickup on it
11:45
i need to say that uh
11:47
i had a really good experience with
11:49
scott and stay gold i did not buy this
11:52
new from them i bought this a guide had
11:54
this
11:55
for like a month or two and he sold it
11:57
on reverb and i bought it there
12:00
and it had some issues when it arrived
12:02
and uh
12:04
you know we agreed the seller and i you
12:06
know agreed that we would send it to
12:07
scott and have him look at it and scott
12:10
ended up
12:11
taking care of everything that was on it
12:13
under warranty and it was great to deal
12:14
with as were the stay gold guys so
12:18
highly recommend
12:20
both of them and
12:21
you should really check them out
12:23
the instruments are just really fun i
12:25
think it's it looks like one of the more
12:26
popular models is the harmony sovereign
12:29
to have that uh converted to x bracing
12:31
and all the other mods
12:34
all right
12:35
well appreciate you watching today's
12:37
show hope you'll uh check these out
12:39
they're quite fun see you next time bye
