This is the Art Beauty podcast, where we tell the real truth about the fake shit. Hi, everybody. My name is Amber, and today my fabulous co-host is Kim Motola. She is the founder of ManiGlovz, which we are going to be talking all about today. I want to first welcome you to the show and thank you so much because I'm absolutely obsessed with this product. Oh, thank you. Thank you. I'm so excited to be here. I really appreciate it. And I love your podcast. Oh, well, thank you so much.
We love doing it, and especially when we have guests like you who are such innovators who came up with a solution to a problem that I think a lot of women probably don't even know they have. And, you know, we're going into spring now, and I feel like so many of us turn the attention to our hands. Right.
So for those of us who are out there who love your gel manicures, this product is going to be for you and you're going to want to listen up, because I think that most people don't understand, you know, sort of the dangers of getting manicure is so. Before we start, let me just show off. And I tried to match today how cute these are. So these are the Manny gloves and why don't you tell us a little bit about why you came up with this?
So I always loved getting manicures, but like so many of us, before gel manicures came about, you'd spend a half hour or more at the salon getting your nails done and then waiting to get them dry and going to get your car keys and the. So as soon as I found out about your manicures, the fact that you can go leave the salon, your nails are shiny, perfect and dry, and they last for three weeks. So for me it was a no brainer. I was so excited about the concept and I was torqued right away.
I mean, seem like I now can't deal with having to sit and get them dry. So I've been a gel manicure girl for years and years and years and I would say like every like once a year I try to take them off, you know, just to give my nails a rest. Like, do you do give yourself a break between gel mayonnaise? I try and then day will go by and I feel naked and have to go back. I can't aim a. Now question, really.
I mean, you know, not to digress too much, but I feel like when they take my nails off, like when they take the polish off, do your nails look as horrific as vine to underneath. I'm like, Wow, I didn't realize I had such stumpy fingers. Oh, your fingers. I'm like, What? Like the actual nail. Like, it looks like dry and brittle and like, that's another part of me sad. It really makes me sad. A beautiful manicure changes my mood.
It does, But like, I can't even knowing that would be underneath of my nails, probably not in the best shape. The second that they slap that gel polish on, I'm like, We're good to glow, girl. Like we are looking good. And yes, yes, it makes me happy and I feel put together and it's just a touch of glam that can like bring your day. I am for your fingers. It is like jewelry. And then with the gel it's like you can are you a person who's very hands on? Because I am.
I have three young kids and a dog, so I am very hands on. And that's another reason no chipping. I mean, for me, it really will last three, three, four weeks where I again, if I got regular manicure, I would leave and it would ship that day and you're just like, I wasted this money and this time. And the time sitting for like an hour to let them dry is just miserable. Okay. So we have a clearly established that we're both huge fans of the gel manicure.
So how did you go from, like, just like loving polish and getting your polish done to realizing like, wait a minute, we need to cover up our hands? So I had always been pretty diligent about sun protection, you know, right after, let's say, high school and after being a devoted sun worshiper and then realizing I had a ton of sun damage and hoping to reverse it, I started to really actively make sure I was putting sunscreen on and protecting my skin.
And after I had been going to the nail salon and doing my Jo, I noticed that my hands started to get a little darker and sunspots and I would feel the heat on my hands. Yeah. So you started to research this and I met with some really top dermatologists and the Skin Cancer Foundation and found out that it actually is, in fact, bad for your skin. It's got a UVA, a UVB rays, and it can cause potential skin cancer. And that that's the worst case scenario.
The best cases, esthetically, it could cause wrinkles, brown spots and whatnot. So, I mean, essentially are like these are like little baby tanning salons for our nails, right? I mean. Now I you know, I want to talk about to do you know, there's two different types of nail lamps, right? So we've got the UV curing and the lead curing climate. Can you tell us what the difference differences between the two?
Sure. A lot of people say, well, we're using the lead, so it's not harmful, which that actually is not the case. The lead also has the UVA rays. Now, these are the rays that caused the damage. UVA has the U. V lamps have the UVA and UVB. It's the UVA that's dangerous. And we actually there was an article that just came out a couple of days ago that said one 120 minutes. 2120 minute session can result in between 20 and 30% of cell death. It reaches a cellular level.
All the issues that can result in cancer, radiation is emitted, emitted with both of these lamps. So you're not getting away with anything with the lead, unfortunately. Wow. I had no idea that that study was out there. And that's actually terrifying. I will tell you, after years of getting my nails done, you know, before many clubs, I started to notice now the brown spots on my hands. And I was like, oh, boy, this is not good.
Just a little quick refresher for everybody because for people who don't know UVA rays, those are what we call in the business, like the aging rays. I like to think of UVA. UVA is aging, UVB is burning. And that has to do with the shape of the way. And wavelength. One is curly and doesn't go into your skin as deep UVA rays are a little straighter so they can penetrate the skin deeper. That's why you get the aging, the college and break down.
UVB rays are the shorter ones, and that's why we've got the burns up top right of your skin. So, you know, if you're not going into a nail salon, at the very least slapping on sunscreen, which let's be honest, who's doing that? Yeah, I had I had thought of that, you know, during my initial jowls. And then they were washing my hands and it was coming off. And so I felt like this was very frustrating to me. I needed a better solution. Right?
And I started researching materials and how to block these UVA and UVB rays and found the right material that would not allow these rays to get through. Okay. So let's just get a fun twist to it and make cool designs. So, you know, we have leopard and this is Crocodile and Rainbow, and I love that pattern right there. It's like a little snakeskin. Gorgeous. I'll put one on, you know, let's talk about this material. So you so you created these gloves, which are brilliant.
And I love that they go up, you know, your fingertips are open so they can get at your nails. They cover up to your wrist. So you're really getting nice protection from the lamps, which generally hit to about here. And like you said already, they're in adorable patterns. I'm thinking. What is the fabric? What makes these, you know, protective? So it is the it is a special fabric. There also has a weave. So it is not it's not a spray. It's not a chemical. It's built into the fabric.
So the good thing is you can these you can hold on to them for years. It's not the kind of thing that you would have and then throw out after one use. You wash them, you hang dry them, or just lay them on top of the table and they dry with them like a couple of hours. Amazing. Now, So I'm glad you brought up a good point. So they are machine washable.
You want to lay them flat to dry and they do feel really nice and substantial because I know that there's some other ones on the market that, you know, you read the reviews and people are like these feel like paper crap. I mean, a sun and. You never know what you're going to get on Amazon or, you know, you just sometimes you just don't know what you're going to get. So we're verified. We've been tested.
It's that's that's our main priority is to just make sure that we have a product that can protect people's skin. That you, you beat me to it. So I was going to ask, you've done studies to measure the effectiveness and the prevention studies supplements. We're constantly trying to upgrade everything. So, yeah, we have everything. Okay. So let's talk about now, you know, you've got all of these from cloth. This costs less than the price of a manicure, right?
Yeah, I didn't think of that, but yeah, you're absolutely right. So the gloves range from, what, about like 16 to $18 a pair? Yeah. Yeah. And how long will they last for? Forever or forever. Okay, so, you know, we put it in a cute little package, so the concept for us was keep your gloves in your pocket, but keep it in your glove compartment. Use it, wash it after, you know, use a couple of uses and dry and hopefully last forever. I mean, for as long as you take good care of them.
So does the U.V., does the you does the UV protection no break down. You mentioned that this is protection is due to the wave of the fabric. You know, the fabric itself. And the fabric itself. Is there any like, you know, I don't know. Is there a point at which, you know, maybe it's not going to be as effective or. No, you could wash some, you know, hundreds of times because it's not something that washes off.
Okay. And now, you know what we know, like with sunscreen, it's like it's really hard to get approval to call yourself something, you know, is giving protection. Is that the same for clothing as well? Are there are strict regulations on that? There are. There are. There are. Okay. So you have to understand, it has to be tested. It has to be approved in order to have the to to call it a sun protection. It does have to go through some rigorous testing. Yes, yes, yes, yes.
And women also, they use it not just for the salon. We have women that email us, showing us pictures of them using it, walking the dog, bicycle riding. A lot of women use it for driving just out and about. I mean, I was going to say that probably for driving, which we don't realize how much damage we're getting from the sun, that's a great thing. Now, are you thinking about doing any like a special driving gloves with like a little bit of grip? Oh, I like that idea.
I have them because we do have women that use it for driving, but I like the grip idea. That would be amazing because, you know, you want a little bit of security on the steering wheel. So, you know, I know that I saw these on Amazon. Is Amazon like a legit seller of these? Yeah. Yeah. They come directly from our warehouse. Yeah. Okay, great. And I know that you're going to be offering a very special discount to us, so we are going to be putting that code in the newsletter.

Right? That's right And it's Amani Glo Z. Great You know so what would you say now is next for you.
Like I feel like you've got this established business and I see behind you how many colors do you have. Oh gosh, now we have about 75. We are we just launched a few weeks ago about 25 to 30 new patterns, which we're so excited about, and we're going to keep on rolling them because it's just so much fun and hearing the feedback and and getting the emails from people with all their different designs and how they coordinate it with their outfits.
So we're going to continue to roll out our amazing patterns. And we're also thinking about Higher Glove for really, you know, if someone wants to protect their whole arm like a sleeve. Yeah, yeah. Which is so great. Anything. You know, And like I said, add that, add those little nubs for the driving gloves that can be so great as well. And, you know, we do have like, you know, we're heading into spring now, but, you know, we've got Mother's Day coming up.
You know, birthdays, wedding season and like what a great gift to give to your bridesmaids, to give to the bride. Like, this is really a cute gift that I feel like it's one of those things, if you know somebody who gets your manicure is like I already have in mind all my girlfriends that I'm going to be giving them to. I mean, this is a no brainer. It's just an easy stop all gift that can actually save lives.
So. Okay, So are there any studies you know, you mentioned before that the people you know, are there any studies that are conclusively showing that people have gotten skin cancer from the nail salon? There are there's there's a lot of new document creation that's coming out. Again, there was this it was in the Shade Room, just came out with that incredible article with so much science on the shade Room.
And I was just reading that prior to this interview, and I couldn't believe, like, they're they're really they're starting to really buckle down on it because I think a lot of salons don't limit either. They don't say, you don't. They don't. They just say, keep putting your hand in. And really you're supposed to put in as minimal as possible. So I used to work with a woman from CND, and I happened to know that their lamps were made. So it's like a 32nd curing, to be honest.
I go to the place up the street. I love my woman and she'll like do three fingers. And she's like, Now leave those in. And then she'll do three fingers. And and I said to her once, like, I'm worried about this. And, you know, I mean, I get it. Her job is to make sure she wants to make sure we're being healthy. But obviously she wants to make sure the manicure is going to last and be good. So. Right. I am so grateful to have these know. I'm just so grateful to have them.
I'm so grateful to you to be on. Do you have any before we let you go? Exciting like spring many trends that you're looking forward to.
