Episode description

Once upon a time I had this guy call me on Thanksgiving day to sell his carpet cleaning service. He probably thought is was a good idea, everybody would be home. Probably had that 100 calls mentality.  I was not joyful or merry when I got that call. I did not curse him out. I reminded him that it was Thanksgiving day. The call ended shortly after that statement.   For some of us, this is the start of enforced joy and merriment. The imperative to buy, buy and buy some more.    I want for you a different imperative. To take care of yourself as best you can. Watch what you eat and drink. And if you are prone to having alcoholic drinks, make sure you also gulp down plain water for brain hydration.    Or you could, embrace the mocktail life. Just a thought.   Balance your sweets with actual veggies and fruits.  Don't indulge in toxicity from media or other sources. Say "Thank you" if it helps you to get out of the store faster.    Our goal is to get to January 2, 2025. And then we get ready to meet the next challenge.    If you need support contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 or 1-800-273-8255, the Trevor Project for LGBTQ+ folks at 1-866-488-7386 or text “START” to 741-741. Resources Mentioned:  Online Vendors U.S.    Certainly can find it via Amazon, Kobo, Abe's for used books and the Barnes and Noble website Online Vendor UK    I found it on the Waterstones Books website.   Online Vendor    Australia Hachette Australian book site.   Disclaimer:  Links to other sites are provided for information purposes only and do not constitute endorsements.  Always seek the advice of a qualified health provider with questions you may have regarding a medical or mental health disorder. In this episode, a quick look at the Anxiety Workbook by Anna Barnes. Welcome to the Anxiety Road Podcast. This is the involuntary journey, finding treatment options and resources for people that have an anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias too. This podcast is treatment agnostic. My name is Gena Haskett. When you go to look for an anxiety book, you quickly find out that there are dozens of them with the same or similar names.

The book I wanna share with you today is called the Anxiety Workbook, practical Tips and Guided Exercises to help You Overcome Anxiety by Anna Barnes. Ms. Barnes is an author from the United Kingdom. If you're new here, this is the podcast that looks at medical, behavioral health, meditation, relaxation, and X equals the unknown resources for those of us that have anxiety disorder or a mental health condition.

So, you know, I'm walking around the bookstore and I just happen to see this book, and somehow it happened to find its way home with me. I actually purchased this book at a Barnes and Noble store. It wasn't on the main floor, but on the third floor that has what I like to call high impulse stuff. This includes non-electrical toys, puzzles, crafts, a coffee shop, and orphaned and clearance books. This workbook is more like a functional anxiety journal. It contains anxiety, tips and information.

There's also a strong focus on what you can do to feel better. Now, when I went to get the details about this book, there was no online book vendor that had sample pages. That's understandable. This is a small book with one or two pages that has an idea or a concept per page. So let me give you an indication of what's in the table of contents, and let me open up the book here. They got your introduction, what this book will do for you, how to use the book.

Part one is Anxiety in You, part two, dealing with Anxiety. Part three, how to Take Control. Part four, facing Your Fears, part Five, looking After Your Body and Mind. Part six, dealing with whatever life throws at you. Part seven, friendships and relationships. And Part eight. Looking forward. This is a much more visual book. I mean, there is text in it, but it is not text dense. It has sections where you can write in how you're feeling about things. It has charts, it has pictures, uh, it has.

A page dedicated or two pages dedicated to a specific topic like learning to control your anxiety. And so it gives you specific steps, uh, for example, how to catch unhelpful thoughts. Check the thought. Is a justified or are you exaggerating? What evidence is there to support that thought? Challenge the thought. What evidence is there that goes against this negative thought? Change it. Is there a more balanced way of thinking about this? So there is some very good information in this book.

It's not gonna be for those who are strictly science-based. It probably is going to be for those folks that have a reduced cognitive load about how much information they can take in at any one time. So who's this book for? I'd say that it is for those people that have low to moderate anxiety disorder symptoms or that you want an accessible way to understand what's going on and what you can immediately do to help you feel better. This could work as a book that you share with your therapist.

And if you're a person does that, does not like a lot of text in your book or you're a visual reader, meaning that you prefer a healthy dose of graphics, this is an option for 160 pages. It gets the job done at a very affordable price. I purchased it for $9 and that's pretty much the price that I've seen for the book from various online vendors. So where can you find it? In the United States, you might find it at your local bookstore. Certainly you can find it online.

Amazon and Cobo does have electronic and and print copies of the book. Barnes and Noble Online has it as well as Abe's. Now, be careful about buying from Abe's books. There are vendors that are overcharging for the book and shipping and handling, so you really wanna pay attention about who the vendor is, where are they located in relation to you, and does it seem fair for the price that they're asking for? Those of you in the United Kingdom, I believe Waterton Waterstone has the book.

That's one of the places that I viewed online and the Hatchet Australia version of, uh, that vendor also has a copy of the book. I can't speak to the rest of the world for physical copies, but you should certainly be able to get the ebook version of it rather affordably. Now longtime listeners know that this is not my favorite time of the year. I am all for chowing down on food, but the imperative to buy, consume and buy again turns me off. I do not, and will not feel relief until January 2nd.

So, in the spirit of consumer indoctrination days, I am begging and pleading with you to make extra sure that you are taking care of yourself and your body. Manage your sugar levels, hydrate yourself with actual water, particularly if you are drinking and drinking a lot of alcohol. Detox from broadcast cable and affinity news. And be that one person who chews very slowly in a methodical fashion.

When your contentious relative wants to share his or her worldview on the best way to make macaroni and cheese, in my opinion, it does not involve Velvetta. But that's just me. This person does not even know how to find the kitchen to boil water, let alone offering a recipe for macaroni and cheese. This is where your meditative skills come in. Very handy.
