Episode description

With attacks on mom and non-mothers, it is easy to forget there are dads that might need assistance too. Giving birth can be a challenging experience.

There are anxiety conditions that can occur because of pregnancy. In this very short episode, I have a resource from Postpartum Support International (PSI) that might be helpful to the fellas that are finding themselves on the Anxiety Road. If you need support contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 or 1-800-273-8255, the Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386 or text “START” to 741-741. Resources Mentioned:  Postpartum Support International (PSI) has a page specifically for dads needing assistance with anxiety or depression generated by pregnancy or birth of a child.   There is also a telephone helpline in English and Spanish 800-944-4773, or you can text help to the same number. The helpline is operational from 8am to 11pm Eastern time.   I also has an app that can help parents access help and support as well as a community that understands issues related to the condition. You can find it at the Apple or Google Play App Stores.   Disclaimer:  Links to other sites are provided for information purposes only and do not constitute endorsements.  Always seek the advice of a qualified health provider with questions you may have regarding a medical or mental health disorder. Welcome to the Anxiety Road Podcast. This is the involuntary journey, finding treatment options and resources for people that have an anxiety condition, panic attacks, and phobias too. This podcast is treatment agnostic. My name is Gina Haskett. I did not know this. But dads have postpartum depression too.

According to the postpartum support international website, at least one in 10 men can suffer from postpartum depression during the child bearing experience, which includes pregnancy and the year following birth. As many as 50% of the fathers suffer from perinatal mental health disorders when their partner is suffering.

And as 18 as many as 18% of the fathers develop a clinically significant anxiety disorder, such as generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. At some point during their partner's pregnancy or the first year after birth, only 25% of those who suffer get help.

And many parents are unaware that what they are experiencing is normal and treatable, and that there are resources available parents can call the Postpartum Support International helpline at 1-800-944-4773 that's available in English and Spanish. You also can text help to that number. In English or 9 7 1 2 0 3 7 7 7 3 in Spanish, or you can go visit the www.postpartum.net. I'll certainly have the links on the Anxiety Road podcast website. I'll catch you next time on the Anxiety Road.
