Episode description

I start the show talking about trying to adjust to being back on the east coast and giving an update on the “Tip the Scales” segment.

Elle reminded me that the Olympics start today to begin the “Table Talk” segment. We also talk about last night’s Patreon Game, the WSOP “Laptop” controversy. We followed up with some of the topics we didn’t mention last week, like our time at The Sphere and the new poker room getting ready to open at the Venetian.

Elliott rules on a situation in the “Call the Floor” segment where a player is acting rude and how that could be handled.

Patrick and I play a this week from the Colossus Event at the WSOP during the “HOTW” segement

I wrap up the show trying to figure out what exactly it is that makes us all loves this rollercoaster of a game in “Joe’s One Outer”

Podcasting from the ad up studio. It's the longest running Poker podcast for the everyday Poker player, with your host, go scale. With Hello, A team, and welcome to the Anti Poker podcast. Wherever every hand is an opportunity. Every player is a friend. And every episode is a winning experience. I'm your host, Joe Scales, and it's been tough readjust the East Coast time. I didn't think it would be, but I've been awake at night and tired in the morning every day this week.

Hopefully, this weekend we'll... Help me get the schedule straightened back out. I also plan on taking a lot of time this weekend to play in the Ante up series on Rad Poker. So if you haven't already joined the site, be sure to do that, I'd love to play with some of you guys. There have been some on the... App where it's been difficult to get people on the site at the same time,

which is what this is all about. We wanna get a bunch of people signed up so that no matter when we log on, we can find a game. There's a link in the show description. So join me there. I know I mentioned this a while back, but the tip to scale segment really is coming. I probably jumped the gun a little bit and announcing it when I did because I still had a lot of work to do for the segment. But I was hoping to, you know, get you guys involved and get you sending in

some some topics to talk about. Which you did, and I'm I'm grateful for that. 1 thing I've learned from doing this is that it helps keep me accountable. Right? And I need that because sometimes I can get in my own way. And if something doesn't look exactly the way I want, or sound the way I want, it sits on hold until I get it just right. Now if you've ever gone back and listen to the older episodes of me doing this early on, it's probably pretty hard to get through. But

it had to be put out. So I just had to learn on the job a little. And and that's actually been a common theme for me lately, which is out of my comfort zone a little bit. All of that is to say, I'm getting that segment ready, and it'll be coming soon, but it's not there just yet. Very soon. That's all I really have. So let's get on with the show. Find out, what conversations are happening around the poker table. With table tom. L and I are, back around the Poker table.

And it's the opening ceremony of the Olympics. It is. You're right. Yeah. I'm excited about watching that tonight. That'll be fun. Snoop carried in the torch? Yes. He did. He's not the only 1 to carry the torch, but he's definitely all over. He was hanging out with the fence earlier today. Was he? Yeah. I love his personality, and he... He ran a time trial. Yeah. I saw that. Remember He did really well. Yeah. So Snoop is represent America in all facets all over. Surprisingly,

the man can run. He really can. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's it's been really weird since been back. I mean, first of all, I'm feeling much better. Hallelujah yeah. But and cleared by 2 different physicians, so I'm super pleased. Yeah. I I had 2 follow up appointments and and they have given me good feedback. So it's good. I apparently need to cut down on the amount of dairy that I eat. Who a thought. It's also odd being back home I mean, we were surrounded by Poker

all day every day. Lights and people and street sounds and noise, and even just taking the dog out feels weird. Yeah. So, however, loves to be back reunited with her, and I know she's happy we're home. But, yes, I even found it very odd just going back to the day to day. Yeah. We did have the patreon monthly game last night and still a little butt hurt. Well, first of all, Elliott shaq your joined us last night, which is awesome. And I specifically asked not to be at his table

if at all possible. I know that's not fair. I did put in special request. It was not... The computer said Wrong answer. And Elliott it knocked me out. I finally had a a decent hand and did not have great cards I played some that I should not have played against some competitive people that we have. Yeah. And then finally got Pocket queens only to find out elliott checked head pocket kings. Yeah. Well, Carmen did bite him though. Yeah. She's a bit.

Because it wasn't, but maybe a few hands later, that he had pocket kings again and ran them into pocket aces. So, wow. I love you, Elliot. It was it was awesome having him there just adding another fun element. I mean, we we always have a good time. Congratulations also to Chris, who's Tee Titan, who took down the 50 dollar prize. He... Yeah. Way to go dude. Way to battle. Yeah. It we got down the heads up, he and I, and it went back and forth for a while. Yeah. We didn't have Bob Chopper in the

hand. So we actually had some heads up action. It it was interesting to me though, because we don't usually have people stick around that long. Like, after they bust out, then they've got things to do. They're gone... We had a crew. I guess we were we were having a good time having some chat and was in interesting heads up battle. And so a lot of people stuck around. Yeah. That was that was nice to see. It's a fun evening. You guys should join us. If you haven't already signed up for the Patreon

game. It's fun. 10 bucks a month with the possibility of winning 50. And cannot go wrong. And honestly, it is a turbo style. Yeah. Tournament. It is not a super turbo or an extra charge turbo or hyper turbo... Turbo that I hate I found out. That's why you hear this in my voice. It's a Turbo tournament. It's fun. It's once to month. Come hang you can turn your camera on and your mic on, You don't have to turn on either. You can just come and get some hands in. It's nice. We enjoy it. Right.

And There's always that possibility even if you don't win first, we we do have the bounty, which Cajun Joe was the bounty this week. And he got knocked out by 1 of our new players, Pocket quad. Got your name. He got the 15 dollar bounty. But that was that was fun. I also went and played my usual, like, home game. Yeah. I went and, like, hung out with the girls. And you wouldn't and played your home game. Yeah. Which which also had a contest to see who's going on the cruise. Yeah.

So 1 percent to leave urgently, and I think there's still 3 players that are gonna play that out. But really cool. Your home game decided to say, hey, let's pitch in and extra for 200 bucks, and that winner gets the trip and a plane ticket. Yeah. And for when I first walked in the door, like, all of the talk was the W sop controversy. Oh, I'm sure because we were front row seat, they were hot and heavy. Right? Yeah. They wanted to know my take for sure. And I just... I wanna make sure that

everybody understands. The controversy is the laptop, the solve on the rail, Not. That there was an earpiece into my ear, like... That it wasn't true to begin with. I we watched the whole time we were there hand. It's been proven over and over and over and over and over and over and over in that video that that was not into My ear. Right. Joe mccann had 1 in his left ear. I think it was his left year. He was just taking it out to give the doo to hug. Yeah. Or fell out or whatever.

But as far as the... Laptop or the solve on the rail. You can make your case for whatever side you wanna make your case for. Personally, I I don't wanna see someone using solve. I mean, basically, it's a... It's it's it's essentially just you saying, it wouldn't be any different than if I pulled out a piece of paper, and I said, how should I play in the upcoming position? You know, pulled out some chart and said, how should I play in the next position

coming up. So if I'm under the gun, How should I play the button and you look on your chart and you say, oh, I should open these hands. It it wouldn't be any different than that. So that's my take. But... Yeah. But nobody's doing that. Right. Because it... It's not legal. That's what you should be studying. Yeah. And I think as far as laptops go, there were lots of people on lots of rails with laptops and phones.

Watching the the hour delay to see what was going on and and giving their guy or girl info, That's helpful. Right. It's also an hour later. Right. So regardless of whether you... Agree with having the laptops there or the solve there or not... The W sop had made an announcement that you weren't allowed to use solve. Or you could be disqualified. Now, we'll see what they do for next year. Yeah. I'm curious or even December. Have an event coming up in December. They do. They do and in the Bahamas.

There's also a couple of other topics that we just flat out, forgot to mention after all the chaos of getting. That's true. That's true. We didn't even talk about the spear. I had been obsessed with this sphere. Year an half. And we didn't even talk about the fact that we scored tickets to the dead and company. We got to see John Mayer and the dead. Gl in the sphere in the

sphere. Right. So you finally got to see the inside of the sphere after talking about it being built and it's like the jets ins in there, man. There's escalators going this way and that way and the lighting and I think it was... I thought it was beautiful venue. Let me and let me just tell you. We were not sure what kind of crowd we were going into. We were not... Dead heads to begin with. We wanted to be in this sphere. The happiest group of people I've ever been to a concert with.

Yeah. Yeah. They were. For any number of reasons, but let me tell you, I will go back to a dead and company show. Any day over lots of other concerts that I've attended. Not 1 person pushing in chu, not 1 person jacking for a position in front of you, nobody complaining about food or beverages, nobody complaining about the bathroom line. I think everybody was just of happy to be there. And I think it's the venue in in a lot of ways, but I also found those fans. I mean, even exiting till

forever and nobody was upset. Right. It's true. And I will say, I don't think I've ever seen. Forever 1 person in concert as many times as the guy that we talked to, there were 23 dead shows at the spear. He saw 22 of them. On 23 to that date. There were... There's more after that. Yeah. I mean, it... And we just talked about logistics and what it looked like the experience unreal. I mean, I don't know that I'm just gonna be able to go watch regular live music anymore?

It's definitely gonna be hard. It's definitely gonna be different. I mean, we... We've talked about the fact that... You have musician who are purely musicians. Right. They they are singers. They are are writers. They are performers. Yeah. Right? Some musicians you meet are also entertainer. They've kinda got that duo going for them. Right. But you get in the sphere and there's a whole another level. Yeah. Like, the sphere does some of it for you. A hundred percent. Yeah.

So you don't have to be as big of an entertainer so to speak for it to be entertaining. It it it actually. And it makes those seats. We were up we were up high. Really high. Which too high. L is afraid of heights. Yeah. We were too high. And so let's say it again, we were too high. We weren't as high up as you could get, but we were... We were far. We were far. You cannot make this better. Well. But in that 400 section, we had just as good a show as

somebody down in the 100 section. A hundred percent, and we even talked to people who had bought tickets for 3 days in a row, We talked to guys who had just been to the show the night before. They said this was a whole different show. They had been in the 200 level. They were at the 400 level, and, honestly, to... The guys behind us at the end, tapped us on the shoulder and said, we we had 1 of the best nights. Yeah.

And so we can honestly say that because it was told to us by other people who'd been to other shows. I mean, I I didn't want it to stop. And it it went on for 3 hours. 3 hours. Yeah. So cannot tell you to run book a ticket, figure out how to get there. The eagles are up next. We're already planning our next trip, and we're seats are gonna be. Thank you, mom, for our early Christmas present because you got us there, and, we had an damn good time.

Absolutely. Not I I definitely wanna go back to to that venue for sure. Another thing that we didn't talk about, Was that new room into v venetian? Oh, I can't wait. We we went we went to the current room. Yeah. We had a great conversation with the staff there. Like, it was it super great group that works there. Yeah. But... And it was super busy. Yeah. Yeah. Well, that's 1 thing that the W sop does is. It filters out to the other other rooms for sure. But their... The venetian is busy

quite often. But this new room opens on August first. And they have so many things planned. Like, above the felt... Our friends and above the felt are gonna be back there. We really wish we could have, made the trip back out. It was just not able to this quickly. So... Yeah. Yeah. They... Before before that, though, they they actually have a goodbye to the old room, which is gonna be fun. Oh, that's neat. Yeah. Cocktails dessert. Gather. Yeah. So of course, poker.

Right. But but, yeah. Then then on August first, yeah. Like you said, our our friends at above the belt. Will be there, Be K or Jam, but also, a fair gal fund will be there. Nice. And Jeremy Os, London Ty, Maria Con. Wow, lots of them. Yeah. Nice. You're gonna be gonna be lots of people there. They actually have a women's meetup up game on the night. I know I really wish that we had realized this sooner. Yeah. But say, love. Yeah. So if if we were able to do it? I would go back just for

this. Unfortunately, we're gonna be on the east coast when the Venetian opens their new poker room, but we're really looking forward and we'll definitely... Stay tuned to social media, pictures, video from all of our friends at above the felt, just to kinda keep us updated in and in the loop. We hate that we're missing this. We wish we could have been back there for it, but, we are definitely coming to visit in December.

100 percent. Yeah. We also... We got a really nice email from, a listener to the show, A in a... An email that just kinda had some feedback for the show. A link to email. We really appreciate it. Yeah. But he had mentioned that you were always the 1 to end the show with talking about it it's a pleasure being around the table with you, and he pointed out the fact that I'm never the 1 to end the show this way. So today, l, I want you to know. Always a pleasure being around the table with you.

Likewise, and thanks, A. Gal time for call the floor with Elliott Sc. Elliott sc joined us each week to say how he would rule on situations that come up in your games, and he's with us again this week. Elliot, how's it going? Going pretty well. Here I am in more casual Yeah. Guard than, I'm usually at tired in. Yeah. But it's great to be with you. It's glad to do another call the floor. We do have a call the floor that was sent in by Ken Douglas, and this one's gonna be an interesting to me

too. Interesting 1 to me too, I think, because I don't know yet. But I think we might come down on different sides of this 1. That is possible. Let's have some continuity yeah I podcast. Kin says we're deep in the Ms. San Diego. It's a 250 dollar P o and, no limit. Hold on mix event. There's 2 tables left and they're approaching the bubble. This ruling, it's spread out basically over multiple hands.

In the hand Ken's in seat 2, and he's in a pot with a player in seat 8 and seat 8 has bet all in on the river, Ken's got a pretty tough decision to make, he heads up. So, he says, while I'm thinking, the player in seat 5 start saying out loud, folder call, folder call. You know you're gonna fold, folder call. This goes on for about a minute. For background, this player is the chip leader and has been somewhat annoying the whole tournament.

He also appears to be somewhat inexperienced at least in tournament play. Eventually, Ken says, do you mind I'm trying to make a decision. So the player in seat 5 funds by laughing and sn At him. He says, the dealer tells him he cannot talk about the hand. And eventually Ken folds The next hand, they get to the river heads up with that same player in seat 5 the disruptive player.

They're playing P o, He says I have top 2 pair in the flush blocker, but the river has brought a backdoor door flush and backdoor straight, villain checks, and he bets a third of the pot. Ken bets a third of the pot. The villain laughs out loud and pass it. Again, putting ken all in, It says if I fold, I'm left with about 16 big blinds. This is when the villain again, it laughs out loud. Scrunch his face sn at him. So basically, he's making faces at him. Ken asks for the floor.

The floor arrives, I explained that the bill is verbally taunting me and interfering with my decisions. And then he should get a warning to stop. Other players at the table speak up and confirm the behavior over several hands. The floor rules that the hand will be played out. Ken kinda gathers himself a little bit, takes a full 2 minutes and, eventually decides to fold.

Flo tells Villain that he can't speak about action when he is not in the hand, for the from the first hand, but that he can't stop him from making faces in an opponent as it's nodding against the rules. 2 hands later for Ken's move to another table. As he sits down, the villain looks at him from a the other table, making faces at him again. So ken discreet calls the floor over and tells him what happened, he goes to the billing, gives him a 1 rem... Penalty.

So This is where we get into the question for you. Ken says, am I right to call the floor here? I know Villain may not be violating the letter of the Td rules, but he is clearly trying to annoy me and his behavior was just rude and bo. Td Is this part of the game that we have to live with or when we pay the entry fee, do we have the right to be treated with dignity and respect at the table? Well, actually, this kind of behavior is expressly against the rules. And anybody who says it isn't.

Especially somebody working in the industry as a tournament director turned an assistance or a floor person, poker manager poker director, a dealer as a fool. And in fact, Let me get this for you. Rule number 2. Player responsibilities.

I will skip to the most important part, but players are responsible for knowing and complying with the rules, following 1 player to a hand, practicing proper etiquette, informing the house if they see or experience this discriminatory or offensive and generally contribute to an orderly event where all players feel welcome. So bo and offensive behavior is patent and distinctly against the rules of poker and tournaments.

So, the fact that this lazy supervisor didn't wanna do anything about it is rather frustrating, especially when multiple players are confirming the offensive behavior. And this behind a behavior is not allowed, making faces that somebody is not allowed. Constantly heck or or pest somebody is not allowed. So again, it's okay to know the rules, and it's okay to look at them if you don't know. But just to say there, there no rule again, somebody making faces are acting boris. That's just not true.

It is against the rules and I've had to show people the rail or the door when they've acted offensive. I In fact, if anybody has worked with me in the past or or clay tournaments I've directed, they know I have little patience for that kind of behavior. I'm there to make sure everybody's having a good time. It's kind of my responsibility and what I get paid for. So, yeah, I've got a a nice hook when it comes to that, and it's not slow.

It it kinda reminds me of the, I guess, controversy a few years ago with Will Ka, because, you know, he really wasn't pushing those limits probably as much as this guy was making faces, On know. He was really talking a lot. And I think the the difference to me was he was will K was in the hand. And in this 1 when he was saying razor full or... Was that the guy who was literally standing up next to his opponent and and trying to look down and and no. No. This 1... That was another 1 Yeah.

That 1... That 1 is is is different. But this 1 was really just 1... He was... Trying to get the information that he wanted by using the the table talk. But he was taking an excessive amount of time and Okay. Kept pushing buttons. It it started to feel more like bullying as time went on. Right. Again, like I said, the probably what Wi Did was probably less of a in fraction than what this person with... Doing because this person is literally

in the... At least in the first hand, he wasn't even in the hand and making comments, which I think is is pretty expressly against the rules as well. So... It is. It the part that gets me is I think as a poker player, you have to be able to ignore people to some degree as well. Right? It's it's sure. And So in Ken's case, he started to let this get under his skin a little bit, and and I think this other player kinda saw that as an opportunity to Right. Use that to try and and throw him

off. Right? Tilt him a little bit. Yeah. Very much. And to some degree, people are gonna want to take advantage of those things. But you have to do it within the rules. So... Quite. I I just... I just feel like in in this case, can... You've gotta be able to push that aside a little bit. Were you right in call the floor? Absolutely? Absolutely. I think you're writing call on the floor, but at the same time, you've gotta be able to play the game without letting stuff like that

get your skin a little bit. So... And to his credit Ken did. He collected himself. He took his time. That is true. He then proceeded to play well. So they shook it off. Yeah. As a matter of fact, his little ending note here, he said Villain ended up busting as the bubble boy, which Karma, you know, with with no money, which elicit clapping and cheering once he left the tournament area. And Ken went on to win the tournament to claim his first Ms t spa trophy. So congratulations on that, Ken.

For sure. Well, done, okay. Yeah. So you're right. Proof right there, he was able to collect himself and move on. So good job for that. But Absolutely. Yeah. I I just feel like I... Well, first of all, I didn't know that it was expressly against the rule, like, written in there, But And black and white. Yeah. But just commonly people have some kinda etiquette yourself. Like, have more respect for yourself and for others. That that should be a general role in life anyway. So that should be.

Alright. Ken, thank you for sending that in. Another great topic keeps sending those in. If you have a call the floor that you would like to know how Elliott would rule. Send it to podcast at any at magazine dot com. Elliott will do this again next week. Absolutely. Wonderful forward to him. Let's break it down with hand of the week. We are back with the another hand of the week and Patrick. How's it going? We're here. We're we got another 1 going. I'm am good my, And yourself?

I'm good, man. I'm back at home back into the swing of things, but real quick, Brad Jackpot Digital our hand end of the week sponsor had a phenomenal world series of poker. I mean, the just people out there playing on those tables all the time. I was say the last week didn't... Last week, didn't you say that every time you you try to go for the first year. Few days you were there. It was just people not nonstop. You couldn't even get on. Yeah. It's been smiles and laughing and few I love to

see it. So congratulations to Jackpot digital. I mean, they just... They've they've really kind of squashed that misconception that it's just a boring electronic tape... Another other electronic table. Yeah. Or another version of trying to do it. Yeah. For sure. And I mean, I think that the fact that there's so there's so much traffic that you're already seeing in person, you know, there, along with... How many ever buy ins across.

I mean, you and I talk about it all the time, you know, with those guys in, they're adding tables all across the country. I'll across the world on put all across the country, literally, every single few weeks, every single month. So it's, you know, fast 40 a year from now, you're out there again for the W. Cp, it's gonna be, you know, significantly more presence than that. So, yeah, Congrats to those guys. Keep up the good work. And if you wanna send Joe 1 to his house, So Yes.

I will help him unload it. I promise. I know I talked about this when I was out here in December too, but but there are some rooms out here that could use these tables for sure, that don't have... That that don't have a poker room but just set these tables out there and have at least a poker presence, I think it was phenomenal. So our hand of the week this week. K. It is sent in by Dustin Scar. Alright. And I've actually had a chance to catch. Dustin out here at the tables while where

we're in Vegas. And I tell you, I watched him play a little bit, he can hold his own. So sites. This will be fun to see how differently we play this hand. He's actually sent in a couple, so we'll we'll have to keep maybe a running total to see how how we do. I like it. Is this 1 way... Wait. Is this 1 from from last week when he was po? Yeah. This is from the colossus event number 70 out here ice. Alright.

Cool. A new 1. So in the colossus, there's only 1 re buy allowed, you know, they have different day 1. So you... You're allowed 1 re buy. K. This is our first buy in. Okay. But Dustin says he's prepared to re buy if he gets knocked out. Cuff. That's good and good to know. I'm at my starting table, which has an international flare. Japan and England. 1 local Las Vegas grinder and other players whose skill levels range from beginner to some experience. So kinda like this hand of the week segment.

Dustin this is perfect. I mean, I'm a little past them beginner, but some days, I don't feel that way. Alright. What's... Man I'm gonna tell you what that's a mixed bag and date. Yeah. He said he got this information by making some small small talk and cracking some jokes and trying to get a feel for his opponent. So that... I think it's cool. That's, you know, that's 1 of the things I try to do is is get a feel for who I'm playing against when I get to the

table. So for Ad dustin says my image is solid as I have only been playing solid hands in position and have shown down strong winning hands to the table. I currently have a stack slightly above starting at 50 k. Where you start with 40 k. K. It's 40 minute levels, we're in level 2 with 10 minutes left. We are currently playing 8 handed out of 10 seats. And if the opportunity arises I plan to take a higher variance play and double my stack in the earlier levels or re buy.

So there we go. We got some background there. Alright. Our blinds are 204 hundred with a 400 big blind anti. And with our 50 k, we've got a hundred and 25 big blinds, we're in the cutoff, and an early player limp. It folds to us with the As Clubs king of Spade. As Clubs king is Spade and it's limp all the way around to us. Well, I like Ace king. I don't know about the rest of, you know, you guys out there, but I tend to like that.

So, going with, and and, you know, off cam a little behind the scenes, we were actually just talking about this. You know, correct me if I'm wrong joe. But, you know, seeing some of the guys playing out there as far as, you know, what's your minimum rate raises, you know, every 1 of us has a you know, even Dustin was talking about what his image was. You know, we all have an image. I think when I'm feeling good about hands. I was definitely feeling good about the hand last week. I I went

nuts start with. But that being said, I mean, I think my normal 1 when I'm playing it's closer to 3. That being said, very winded response to, I'm probably gonna go a thousand. Okay. I think that's probably a little on the smaller side. Smaller side. I. Again. You gotta take this with a grain all too. I feel like when we play tournaments, especially big hanging tournaments. I don't necessarily play them well. So this will be a fun 1 to do. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

I... We... You're right. We... Before we jumped on here, we were just talking about our starting raises. Right? And it used to be that I would do 2 and a half times the big blind to bet... That was my standard. Yeah. I've started to... As I was thinking about my own game, then I've started to think about it from a perspective of doing... Higher bets at the beginning early stages of a tournament, and then bringing it back as the tournament

progresses. So... Yeah. We're in the second level right now. So I'm probably gonna start with A3X rays. Right? Plus 1 big blind for the limp. So that would put me right there at 1600. Okay. I'm following you now. Alright. That works for me. What's what's our friend, dustin do? Dustin bet 16. Hey. Listen. If this continues back to back weeks, we're gonna have to worry about how big get is. Alright. So 1600 it is. Yeah. Dustin says, due to the limp, I sized up and made it 1600.

The villain on the button, a Japanese player who is here for an extended time to play in world series of poker events. He appears to be poker accomplished and has been very active and is the chip leader at our table, with 65 k, which has me covered around 15 k. He 3 bets us to 4600, and the blinds fold, the limp folds and it's back to me. Interesting. Well, I'm calling. I like Ace King. Yeah. You're you're you're... You have that look.

And that look folks for the ones not listening or not watching. The look is I'm feeling frog, and I'm going to do something over the top. I think that's what you're thinking right now. Yeah. Yeah that you are. Yes. Spot on. Yep. There's there's 2 schools of thought here. Right? So there are some people that think, well, Ace king still just ace king. It's no pair, but let me tell you. It's the nut no pair. It's the best no pair you can have. It is. It is literally the best.

No pay... Well, I guess suited would be the only way better, there. But yeah, You're right. I think the other thing too is that I think you know, this is early on enough in a tournament and correct me if I'm wrong, but I I guess you wanna set a tone too and why you're holding Ace king as well. I think that's important. For sure. So where are you going with this? Yeah. I definitely wanna put some aggression back on the chip leader here, let him know that we mean business.

It's gonna be a big portion of our stack already. But... I was gonna say, because what it's 4... What, 4600 to us. Is that what you said? 4600. Yeah. So All men phrases were in for 10. Already... I'm going 15. Joey just love things skin right now. I I do like that. I I get why you're doing it. I think most of most of our listeners what's in Foot feel the same. I think that's a a good call. It's a Guts 1. Don't get me wrong. It takes it takes some guts, but You know, I... It's a smart play. I

get it. We can rep aces and kings here too. So... Yeah. Absolutely. You can. Yeah. So that's what I'm doing. 15 to go. K. And Dustin says, since the player has been very active and has position, I elect a 4 bet. Versus calling. I make it on the smaller side, 10500 as this is 20 percent of my stack and if he 5 bet jams, I want options to get away. The villain thinks for about 20 seconds and makes the call.

And let me just say... It doesn't makes a good point because if we if we go a little smaller than I did, then we do have the option to get away a little bit. But I just don't know that I wanna be getting away from it. So... Fair? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So Dustin put some thoughts in here He says, this might be the opportunity to play a big pot and double. But I'm also willing to pump the brakes if needed and fold.

I have ace king off suit and remove combos of aces and kings, Billings range could be wide with all pocket pairs in play, fives and up, suited connectors and even some face cards. This was the first 4 at our table, and I viewed my 4 as extremely strong, which polarized my range to the villain. I also considered making it slightly bigger to 12500 to or 13000 which I still even went bigger than that.

Yeah. You weren't even bigger than that 1, but elected for the smaller sizing for my 4, He says I truly believed if this player had Aces or kings and maybe even queens that he would 5 bet us. And wanna get all the chips in pre fly. While I don't like risking over a hundred big blinds with Ace King, I'm willing to gamble early to build a big stack in this specific tournament. Yeah. So there's now 22400 in the pot. And the flop is the queen of Spade 8 of hearts, 5 of clubs. So it's rainbow flop.

I, I don't love that. Yeah. This is why people say what's just ace king. Yeah. You don't have any paired. But again, it you're probably dustin what it dustin said he's taking Aces ages and kings out. They could have queens. Yes, you know, they... From what it sounds like, the the the villains play some hand, so you're not making them... Can't make them out on anything just yet. Mean, you're... You could... He I mean, he's got a range.

So However, we did not pair our Aces or kings, so that's unfortunate. Right. This is the point where if you're willing to slow down and let go of the hand, you can check and let it go for sure. Yeah. I still wanna try to represent those big pairs, even Ace queen at this point. Fair. I give you that. So I'm gonna continue to put pressure on here in bet 12 k. I'm full. I'm checking. You're... Checking there. I I... Did you hear the subconscious come out

there? I... I started with. Yeah. I know you started with fault. I'm I'm checking. Yeah. If the billing calls my 12 k that we can reevaluate, but I'm I'm putting it in there. Dustin is in your camp, P elect to check. Come. And Villain checks back fairly quickly. Which to me, a quick check back. To me that screams either a draw or small to medium pair. So Yeah. They're and they're whole nines. Yeah. My immediate all. You know? Right. My immediate thought is can we get somebody to...

Can we get this particular player to fold a small to medium pair. If so, we continue to put the pressure on if not, we reel it back in a little. Yeah. Dust says taking away Aces and kings from villain I'm behind ice queen king queen, pocket eights, and pocket fives. Don't believe they hit a set of Queens as he would have bet that hand bet that hand as my pre fought play looks like Aces and kings. And ace king or even Queens.

Villain could have ace queen and he is checking back for pot control and considering that I might have Aces or kings. So there you go. So we went check check. The turn is the queen of hearts. Now the board is the queen spade, 8 of hearts, 5 of clubs queen of hearts. Oh, man. So what do you think about that? Yeah. I mean, it's... Again, I I would have loved to see Ace king come out. I think... And it's a little bit different than the first. Check. But I think I wanna check to him

again to kinda see where he's at. I I know where we are I think we're gonna learn something from what... How he responds to a check. To... 100. Yeah. Okay. Alright. So I'm checking there and then wait to see what he's got? Because, I mean, if he comes when you're down the around a second. So what's our friend, dustin, you said you check I... Yeah. I think it's it's it's a tough card. Right? So it makes it less likely that we can have A queen.

Still yeah. But we're more wrapping aces and kings now rather than, or other smaller pairs. But, yeah. I think you're right. We learn a lot from how the villain reacts to us checking. Yeah. So let's see what the villain does. Dustin says, I take about 20 seconds and check. The villain seems slightly unsure and bets out very small after 30 seconds, for 7000 into a 22400 pot. Seems unsure and bet 7000 in a 22. So this about a quarter.

I... I'm I'm still right where you and I were to start with in... I mean, with dustin instead of to the range wise, but a smaller pair, a draw, he's made us on... It realistically, he still may make us on Ice queen, but definitely Aces is definitely possibly kings. I I think you you at least call. Yeah. I don't think we're beat by any means. I I think I mean, I think we're beat currently. I think... I mean, we we don't have a parent Okay. Let they do. Yeah. Okay. Let me rephrase.

We may be beat, but I think we're in control if we want to be. Yes. Which which when it comes down to it is half to battle as well. I mean, you gotta have the cards somewhere sooner or later, but you don't always have to have the cards. So that being said, I I think you at least call, I think Realistically, if you're gonna keep representing a hands, like 1 has taught me, you're going bigger. I'm putting an all in baby. If the look, if if if Our read is right, and he truly seems unsure.

If we go for it right here, we really represent a queen. Then I think we get him to fold. Yeah. And I think you take down a very nice pod to continue to into this gate. Tournament. Yeah. Yeah. I'm check raising all in. Dustin says, I consider check raising an electric call who with 36400 in the pot, and I have 32500 behind. Villains range is based around middle pairs, nine's, tens, jacks, and Villain doesn't not have really full house or trip queens.

So Villains bet of 7000 was more probably of a probing bet. My line would call with Aces, kings or ace queen. I think you've you represent an ace queen specifically, you're raising. I think if you're representing Aces and kings... He's not wrong. I could see it. Yeah. I think he actually made the case for check raising. There rather than calling. It seems more likely to me to check raise a screen here because if you have Ice queen, the turn is

where you make your money. So I think that's where we have to get it in. But he just calls. And the river comes out the 2 of... Clubs. Mh w. So queen spade, 8 of hearts, 5 of clubs, queen of hearts, 2 of clubs. Yeah. What do what do you do with that? Okay. Well, you all of your chips are already in. Literally. There's... They... They're... They've been in... As soon as that other queen showed shoulder her face. Joe with shoving chips.

So... But, however, if we're playing Dustin hand, and you just called there, Are you shoving here? Are you tech shoving? I don't wanna check shove. And I don't think we win this hand if we just check. So I think the only option is to put. All of our chips in. And I hope that they fold. Yeah. But I think that we would have been better served putting him in a street earlier. I think you're right. I yeah. III do. I think you're right too. Not easy to do, but think you're right.

What's what's Dustin in up? Dustin says I take about 20 seconds and go all in. I for 32500 into a 36400 pot. Villain tanks for over 2 minutes. That's the longest 2 minutes ever. Good. Gosh. 2 minutes. And at times he looked like he was going to fold. But then the villain changed his mind and looked like he was going to call. Clock was called on the villain. But he made the call before the floor even arrived and turned over pocket tens, winning the pot and knocking me out. I

said nines. Yeah. You did. You called it. We... Yeah. I think... All 3 of us. I think... I was gonna say Dustin called it. I mean, I'd I'd glenn... I mean, I fed off of him. Dustin says I know that my play was higher variance, but being able to re buy and build a huge stack. My blockers, and based on the villains line, I think we can place them on a specific range of pocket pairs. My river jam should get the bill to fold and allow me to win the pot as he's only

beating a bluff or lesser pocket pairs. Ace king, ace jack nines. Just so happened we had the Ace king in hindsight, I should have bet the turn card versus checking. As is... This is what... Dustin dusted is spot on. He he he he he knew what what he was doing. Yeah. They said betting on the turn card and then going all in. Oh, so he didn't wanna go all in. He just wanted to bet lead out.

I think actually, I think actually, Dustin, I think the check raise looks more strong there on that turn card. But, But you're right. Even if you bet there and then bet the river, that makes our shove look even stronger on the river and either way either either line probably gets our opponent to fold. Yeah. Yeah. That's a fun 1. That was a fun 1. That was a good 1. Dustin, that was definitely, I think you you had it peg. You, Sounds like you played it pad. You you really didn't.

Learned a lot from that. I think a lot had to do with it too. I think I've may have played it differently. I I appreciate the background, I guess is what I was trying to say because having the rebound in my pocket allowed me to know the check, shove or check raise was the way to go. Yeah. You don't have that in your pocket. You don't ear... You're not settle on that yet. I mean, I think you play a little bit differently. So that's a good. Yeah. I I think you... At at least

you think about it. So Oh. Either way, either way the rebound went well. Yeah. I was say, either way, we're all back at that re bike. Yep. And, I have not seen a bracelet. From Dustin. So I don't think the re by got him a championship, but hopefully, he cashed. And There. Yeah. So, Dustin, thanks for sending that in. And if anybody else has a hint of the week that they would like Patrick and I to down. Send it to podcast at any at magazine dot com.

Patrick las it again next week. Pleasure always. I'll see you then. Now that we're back home and we have a little bit of time outside of poker. It had me thinking about why we all love this game despite the roller coaster of emotions it puts us through. It's this mix of acceleration, soul crushing defeat and the occasional bout of beginner luck that keeps. Us coming back for more. Right?

Or maybe it's that art of the well timed bluff because you've worked hard being patient and building your image, you've told that story on every street. Now it's time to go for it. Bluff is like this delicate dance where you're the star performer and everyone else has left questioning their life choices until someone calls your bluff, and you're left to sheep turn your hand over.

But, hey, at least you tried, I used to think that it was the fact that I had control of the game that I loved so much. But that's really all in illusion too. Right? We're still at the mercy of the deck. I'll admit though. That there is something beautifully ironic about. Feeling like a master strategist, well, still praying for an ace on the river. Like being a captain of a ship with half a rudder. You're still navigating the seas, but ultimately, it's up to the waves.

Or the cards as to where you end up. A friend of mine was telling me that their favorite moments of poker are when they make an outrageous call and it pays off. You know, the times when you put your opponent on a specific hand and you're actually right. It's like finding a needle in a haystack and then doing this victory dance. Right? Never mind that these moments are about as rare as a solar eclipse.

I guess they're worth every ounce of south doubt regret that they had to go through to get there. Being in Vegas during the W sop was further proof that Poker brings people together too. Sometimes too close together. Like when that 1 friend won't stop telling you how they almost won that big hand, but it's all part of the charm, the banter, the rivalry and the shared moments of victory and defeat.

These create these bonds that last longer than the time it takes for a new player to shuffle a deck. I also enjoy the little side anecdotes in poker, like players and their superstition. The lucky hat, the special shuffle, the ritual snack break. It's part of the fun to believe that these little quirks have any bearing on the outcome of a game that is entirely based on probability. But, hey, it makes you feel better. If it makes you feel better to...

But, hey, if it makes you feel better to knock 3 times on the table before you look at your cards, That's Sm on my face. That's me enjoying the moment, not judging you. In the end, poker is more than just a game, it's a test of wits and nerves. It's the perfect blend of strategy luck and socialization that keeps us coming back for more. So here's the poker, the game we love to hate and hate to love. But deal me in for sure. That's today's 1 outer, and that's today's show.
