Leo XIV Elected First American Pope

In one of the oldest of old-world ceremonies still in practice, 133 cardinals chose the next leader of the Catholic church. And though he is said to be, in many ways, a natural successor to Pope Francis, Vatican-watchers have long doubted the chances that an American would be elevated to the papacy.
