00:00:01 Speaker 1
You're listening to and This is why I love.
00:00:28 Speaker 1
And welcome back to episode 2.
00:00:31 Speaker 1
Of and This is why I.
00:00:32 Speaker 1
Comics podcast. We're back, and we're going to talk some more about cosmic odyssey. We're going to go through.
00:00:40 Speaker 1
I love how my voice goes to the odyssey. At the end. You know, that's great and we're going to do issue 2-3 and four of the series. We started it last episode and again I have Mike with us and we are going to just.
00:00:56 Speaker 1
Dive deep into this and try and wrap up the series and give our thoughts about it. Hi, Mike.
00:01:04 Speaker 2
Hey, good evening. Good morning. Good day whenever.
00:01:07 Speaker 2
This is being listened to or heard.
00:01:09 Speaker 1
How are you today?
00:01:19 Speaker 2
Which is a term used in.
00:01:21 Speaker 2
The production of TV commercials.
00:01:25 Speaker 2
So I'm getting ready to film one.
00:01:28 Speaker 2
More TV commercial tomorrow and Friday.
00:01:32
And then so it's.
00:01:34 Speaker 2
Been a busy week.
00:01:35 Speaker 1
Ohh, it sounds busy. I thought you just mowed the lawn.
00:01:38 Speaker 3
Yeah, I just did.
00:01:39 Speaker 2
That too. So I I can almost multitask.
00:01:43 Speaker 2
Yeah, I put all that on my wrist.
00:01:46 Speaker 2
TV commercials, graphic design.
00:01:48 Speaker 2
And lawn mowing.
00:01:50 Speaker 1
Issue 2 of cosmic goddessy the book 2 called the Disaster because they all start with D's. Of course I was listening and editing the first episode and we had a couple questions in our own minds about certain things and I.
00:02:06 Speaker 1
One of them was about Jon Stewart, who will probably talk about a little bit this episode because something happens to him this episode. But we were curious about Jon Stewart status as a Green Lantern, and so I did a little, did a little research, and basically the ring like the all the rings.
00:02:26 Speaker 1
Like like all, all the remaining Green Lanterns were stationed on Earth for a while and including some alien ones. This is the original Green Lantern series. I think the series ended at 2:24 where the the Green Lantern core that were remained broke.
00:02:45 Speaker 1
Up and John's ring wasn't working for a while, and then he got he got it restored with the help of Hell Jordan. So he was going through some tough times. He left Earth right before cosmic odyssey. And then the events of Cosmic Odyssey happened. So he did have an official ring.
00:03:07 Speaker 1
It just wasn't working right before this episode or before this series, and I don't remember. It's been a while since I've read that ending of that series because it wasn't.
00:03:18 Speaker 1
Good. Apparently he got his Green Lantern ring back just before this happened. So that's the status of John's ring.
00:03:26 Speaker 2
What do you think? I mean? Was that something that you felt? So I would say this.
00:03:29 Speaker 2
Was supposed to.
00:03:30 Speaker 2
Be like DC big foray into cosmic adventures and has had lasting ramifications reintroduction of new gods.
00:03:40 Speaker 2
That do you?
00:03:40 Speaker 2
Think the editorial staff at DC opted to like?
00:03:45 Speaker 2
Give John Stewart.
00:03:46 Speaker 2
Ring back in preparation or in anticipation.
00:03:49 Speaker 2
Of this, I wonder like what came first.
00:03:51 Speaker 1
Yeah, I can't really tell from what I've read, which came first, whether it was a editorial mandate or Jim Starlin said. Hey, I gotta use this character or I want to use this chair.
00:04:02 Speaker 1
Here and then. Hey, can we have his his powers back because he's pretty useless without it. But you know, Starling had, you know, some of his beats of this story focused on John Stewart and what ended up happening to him, this issue became actually one of the few things out of cosmic odyssey that stuck.
00:04:23 Speaker 1
You know, there's a lot of things that I don't think stuck from this series like the anti life.
00:04:29 Speaker 1
Villain itself, I think it changed to something else, but the one aspect of this 4 issue miniseries that remained was John Stewart's failing this mission and causing the death of a whole sector of the Galaxy. Because I can remember even.
00:04:50 Speaker 1
A few years ago them talking about how he had to deal with this.
00:04:55 Speaker 1
Loss and stuff so.
00:04:56 Speaker 1
Well, if if nothing else, out of cosmic gotta see happened at DC, the one thing that remains from this series is Jon Stewart's guilt or survival and forgiveness of his guilt regarding his failure here in the series.
00:05:15 Speaker 2
Now did this and own this team, that mosaic?
00:05:20 Speaker 2
Is like the green.
00:05:22 Speaker 2
Series was that even later down the road?
00:05:25 Speaker 1
No, it was actually just after this series, I think, probably. Oh, it's probably a year or two after after this series that Mosaic came out. I don't know the exact year, I don't haven't looked it up, but I'm pretty sure it was around around this time, but not right away afterwards. I think there was no after after after the original series the Green Lantern.
00:05:46 Speaker 1
Or I think there was a two year hiatus before another Green Lantern series came out, and then when that series came out, Mosaic also came out. I think so.
00:05:54 Speaker 2
So I gave him his own.
00:05:56 Speaker 2
Title him a little bit of the purpose.
00:05:58 Speaker 1
Yeah. And I I remember buying the first few issues of that series and I think it was beyond me at the time or I there was too many other distractions. I don't remember liking the series at all of Mosaic. The art was, it was OK, you know, it was it was pretty, but.
00:06:14 Speaker 2
Yeah, it kind of.
00:06:15 Speaker 2
Reminds me like.
00:06:17 Speaker 2
Brain still freeze. It was kind of like somebody just remember the artist's name right off, but had very much a highly angular.
00:06:28 Speaker 2
Dialed in their artwork.
00:06:30 Speaker 1
Yeah. Yep. Yep. And it was. I I remember being very colorful, like this weird color palette or not weird, but just something that would really, that really shone on the paper. A lot more. Maybe it was just the time that coloring was being ushered in as the the cure for comics.
00:06:49 Speaker 1
Making everything look better, but I remember it was a strange color palette on that series.
00:06:55 Speaker 3
Yeah, I think it was.
00:06:56 Speaker 2
A case.
00:06:57 Speaker 2
Where you know the whole.
00:06:58 Speaker 2
Digital coloring is coming about.
00:07:01 Speaker 2
And so just having like laying down flat colors.
00:07:04 Speaker 2
And all the little dots, that kind.
00:07:06 Speaker 2
Of help break up color transition, they were actually doing pretty decent 4 color process separation and making.
00:07:14 Speaker 2
Subtleties and so forth are coming in and unfortunately.
00:07:19 Speaker 2
Like mostly you have to kind of feel out the boundaries like a little kid. You have to see exactly how far you can go before you break a thing. And you know, a lot of that stuff is like, that was a lot of garish colors, a lot of just bright stuff that they could. Hey, let's try this. Hey, let's try that. Let's try. And then finally it's like, OK.
00:07:39 Speaker 2
Now that we've explored how far we can go and we made things look really gross.
00:07:45 Speaker 2
Let's try to read it back.
00:07:48 Speaker 2
No, another lasting thing and I don't know if it even had ramifications leading into it. But you were collecting the Demon series host this.
00:08:01 Speaker 2
You know, but, well, how far?
00:08:03 Speaker 2
Or when did the demon comic series?
00:08:05 Speaker 3
Come out, I think it.
00:08:06 Speaker 2
Was Steven Grant that was writing that series?
00:08:08 Speaker 2
Or something like that.
00:08:09 Speaker 1
Yeah, and Val Simex was the artist.
00:08:13 Speaker 2
They didn't separate the.
00:08:16 Speaker 2
The two characters you know that give them blood and a demon were one and you know, fused together in that scene.
00:08:26 Speaker 1
Yeah, it was. It was a good series. I enjoyed it. I don't own it anymore, but it was very I don't know, it was, it was my first collection of the demon as character and I I enjoyed a lot. I remember reading it, but I didn't. It wasn't one of those where I had every issue. I had a lot of it, but it would skip around a lot because.
00:08:46 Speaker 1
Most of those I bought at a store called Tradeway on 36th St. You know, like where, where we lived and he had, yeah, he was. That was a great story. I wish I I I'm. I believe the owner has passed but.
00:09:02 Speaker 2
Yeah, I think.
00:09:02 Speaker 2
He was dead while still working there.
00:09:05 Speaker 1
Yeah, it was all that pipe smoke, but I would buy it. He would get a lot of back issue recent back issues. I don't, I don't, I never asked him where he got them from. It's just a used bookstore.
00:09:16 Speaker 1
We had a a whole wall of of comic boxes and I'd I'd go there probably every couple weeks and he'd get some new books in and I'd pull them out and he'd always get kind of the same books that didn't sell at this, whatever comic shop that he, he bought them from. And I would just buy them. I think they're all buck or something and.
00:09:36 Speaker 1
Got quite a few runs of of books there. Those are the good old days, I think.
00:09:41 Speaker 2
Yeah, yeah, dirt cheap. He didn't know what he had in.
00:09:45 Speaker 2
A lot of the cases I think I got.
00:09:47 Speaker 3
From that shop I bought.
00:09:49 Speaker 2
The first appearance of the Punisher, I think it was Spiderman 129. Amazing Spiderman one.
00:09:54 Speaker 2
29 I think.
00:09:55 Speaker 2
Came over, but it's exactly the number or not?
00:09:57 Speaker 2
But I got that near mint condition $0.35.
00:10:03 Speaker 2
All of this counts for $0.35.
00:10:05 Speaker 1
OK. Yeah, I thought they were a buck. But yeah, you're right. They were cheaper.
00:10:09 Speaker 2
Yeah, well.
00:10:11 Speaker 2
In today's economy, that $0.35.
00:10:13 Speaker 2
Is like five times.
00:10:14 Speaker 1
Right. Yeah, it was great store. Maybe we'll do an episode of stores I'm sure.
00:10:23 Speaker 1
Yeah, I can have a. A couple people from my comic group that's on Facebook on too. We we all have some stories about comic books in the area or comic stores in the area, and they're all very.
00:10:38 Speaker 2
Especially about one in particular.
00:10:40 Speaker 1
Probably, yes, that one. That's it's funny how we all bonded over dinner one one time talking about talking about that person. Yeah, but back to cosmic odyssey. I mean, we don't have to, but you know.
00:10:57 Speaker 2
It shows you how riveting this story is when we, when we so easily digress.
00:11:03 Speaker 1
Yeah, and that's.
00:11:04 Speaker 2
Covered distance of the story.
00:11:07 Speaker 2
Let's talk about something completely different.
00:11:09 Speaker 1
Right, which is a shame, because the art is is very nice, very good. And the story the story lacks and and I as we go through my notes, I'm going to point out some of my problems with this story, but.
00:11:24 Speaker 2
An overview.
00:11:26 Speaker 2
You know 40 foot.
00:11:27 Speaker 2
View or whatever they call that you take.
00:11:30 Speaker 2
You know.
00:11:31 Speaker 2
Broad stroke of the whole thing.
00:11:34 Speaker 1
Yeah. I mean, issue one, we already covered kinda, it's basically dark side enlists the help of really like there's like a handful of heroes which one of my problems is if it was such a big deal why was there only.
00:11:49 Speaker 1
Like 6 Heroes invited to this to this thing.
00:11:53 Speaker 1
I guess it wouldn't make quite as entertaining the story, but like, if this is, you know, we can, we could lose the entire universe if this happens.
00:12:03 Speaker 1
Ah, let's.
00:12:04 Speaker 1
You 5 and you over there. Come, come with us. You know, we know there's a planet of the heroes, but we'll just leave them alone. But.
00:12:11 Speaker 2
So busy I was.
00:12:13 Speaker 2
Kind of wondering about that too, and nothing stopping your, you know, overview but.
00:12:18 Speaker 1
No, go ahead.
00:12:20 Speaker 2
We're such a cosmic.
00:12:22 Speaker 2
And DC wasn't ever known to have giant cosmic type characters, but for such a cosmic thing, you know, where was like Spectre, you know, which is like basically their biggest cosmic being at the time. And, you know, some of the.
00:12:36 Speaker 2
Other like really really.
00:12:37 Speaker 2
Big last episode we talked about, you know, the absence of one woman and because we had to do more.
00:12:42 Speaker 2
The fact that works for us is kind.
00:12:44 Speaker 2
Of like reworking that mythos, but you know a.
00:12:49 Speaker 2
Lot of other characters that are.
00:12:50 Speaker 2
Just like why?
00:12:52 Speaker 2
Wasn't this character there? Why wasn't this character there wasn't this character.
00:12:55 Speaker 2
It just seems like yeah, you.
00:12:57 Speaker 2
List some key key people.
00:13:02 Speaker 1
But uh yeah, that's the thing. I mean, this was after crisis on infinite Earths, which was in 84. So it's a couple years after that. So they've established a new universe and, you know, there was some pretty powerful new characters introduced, you know, Captain Adam and all these, all these other characters.
00:13:21 Speaker 1
That have had their timeline reset that they could have used, so I'm not sure, I mean obviously Starlin wanted to use these guys and that's the way the story.
00:13:30 Speaker 1
Was but in a in a DC universe kind of thing. I'm not sure why there wasn't more heroes and and there'll be a hero or two that show.
00:13:40 Speaker 1
Up later but.
00:13:41 Speaker 1
It just didn't make sense with the cosmic scope of it all.
00:13:47 Speaker 2
No, no. You know what? What is?
00:13:52 Speaker 2
Your opinion was.
00:13:53 Speaker 2
This more to kind of tell epic tale. Or was it?
00:13:58 Speaker 2
Really more of a kind.
00:13:59 Speaker 2
Of a pilot, if you would.
00:14:01 Speaker 2
To reintroduce the new.
00:14:04 Speaker 1
Oh, it was definitely a pilot. Yeah, there was certainly beats of the story that was just there to highlight the history of the new gods and how how it is set in this new DC universe. Pretty sure they hadn't used the new gods.
00:14:23 Speaker 1
Really at all since the crisis, so this might have been just a reestablishment of these characters that they wanted to use again. Yeah, definitely a reset. And you know, it's they're enjoyable characters and dark side is a great villain. But you know it it wasn't Infinity Gauntlet.
00:14:41 Speaker 1
Cosmic, where let's introduce every character and have it mean something where we'll we'll crossover into all these other books. You know, it wasn't that type of event. Maybe. Maybe there was, I don't know what that event was that year, but it wasn't this one.
00:14:59 Speaker 2
And this I think.
00:15:00 Speaker 3
You know was.
00:15:00 Speaker 2
Clearly, before they would have events every summer crossover events, this is its own entity, kind of very much the stand alone.
00:15:10 Speaker 2
But at the same point I was kind of.
00:15:13 Speaker 2
You know, it seemed very heavy-handed to try to.
00:15:16 Speaker 2
Like OK people.
00:15:18 Speaker 2
You like these characters? You like Batman?
00:15:21 Speaker 2
Batman in here, but it's he's paired off.
00:15:24 Speaker 2
With a new God and the.
00:15:27 Speaker 2
Same thing with all the other you.
00:15:28 Speaker 2
Like Green Lantern, Green Lantern, Green Lantern.
00:15:31
Man well.
00:15:31 Speaker 2
He's paired off with the new.
00:15:33 Speaker 2
So that way if you like Superman, you to see him work with him and gotten really. Now you'll like this character too, and that's why I kept thinking like, like the pairing of these guys was just like, you go with this person. You go with this person. The only one obviously was the.
00:15:47 Speaker 2
Green Lantern and Martian man hunter that they didn't pair off a earth hero with a.
00:15:53 Speaker 2
Oh God care.
00:15:55 Speaker 1
Right.
00:15:57 Speaker 2
Wonder it's that you get the point.
00:15:59 Speaker 2
Of let's try to reintroduce these characters as if to.
00:16:04 Speaker 2
Integration of readers.
00:16:07 Speaker 1
Yeah, probably. And even like the book started out.
00:16:10 Speaker 1
It was just a normal dark side invasion into the earth and then it cuts like that was six months ago and then two weeks ago Dark Side finds Metron.
00:16:22 Speaker 1
And discovers that Metron had tried to find the anti life equation because he needs to know everything.
00:16:29 Speaker 1
And then dark Side learns that Ohh I have to get these certain heroes and then.
00:16:35 Speaker 1
You know, the great the great character, Lothar Lonar. I don't know. No, Mr. Lonar. Mr. Lonar shows up, gets every all the important heroes to do. Genesis.
00:16:50 Speaker 1
And then we find out that this thing called the anti life equation has has pierced the universe with four. Or is it 4? You have 4 aspects of itself.
00:17:02 Speaker 1
Just little little parts of himself and it wants to destroy some of the galaxies so that it can enter fully.
00:17:10 Speaker 1
And that's kind of, you know, like each each hero like you said was paired up and was going to go to these different spots in the universe to try and stop this anti life equation.
00:17:23 Speaker 1
Creature from destroying the universe and that's. I mean, that's really the plot. Like that's it.
00:17:30 Speaker 2
Yeah. Yeah. And it was written in very much, you know, like.
00:17:37 Speaker 2
Classic. Very very traditional.
00:17:40 Speaker 2
Writing method, writing style of OK, you know, establishment. Everybody's here. Yep, everybody account for. Yep. OK, cool. Now we're going to have this act of, you know.
00:17:52 Speaker 2
You're going to go 1st and we're going to.
00:17:54 Speaker 3
Watch what happens with.
00:17:55 Speaker 2
You and we'll complete your story.
00:17:57 Speaker 2
And then we're going to.
00:17:58 Speaker 2
Go to the next person in the later.
00:17:59 Speaker 2
Story and then we'll.
00:18:00 Speaker 2
Have it all culminate at the end.
00:18:02 Speaker 2
With one big thing and then wrap it.
00:18:04 Speaker 2
All up and that's the way every story is. So I'm.
00:18:07 Speaker 2
Not saying anything.
00:18:08 Speaker 2
Great with him saying that, but.
00:18:09 Speaker 2
The main thing was more about.
00:18:11 Speaker 2
It was. It followed it. So by the numbers.
00:18:17 Speaker 2
And there wasn't really any real twists. It was supposedly it wasn't twist, but it wasn't really.
00:18:24 Speaker 2
You know the the introduction of, you know, Jason blood and the demon.
00:18:30 Speaker 1
Right.
00:18:31 Speaker 1
Well, that was supposed to be A twist, right? Yeah.
00:18:34 Speaker 2
And it's like, so, I mean it's like.
00:18:37 Speaker 2
You know people who are buying this book. If you didn't know who the demon character was, it would probably you weren't buying this book anyway.
00:18:45 Speaker 2
You know it would mean.
00:18:46 Speaker 2
These pristine formats were a little bit more expensive than the traditional.
00:18:49 Speaker 2
Comic you had.
00:18:51 Speaker 4
To go to the.
00:18:51 Speaker 2
Specialty comic shop and.
00:18:54 Speaker 2
All that kind of combined with.
00:18:58 Speaker 2
If you don't know who you know, these characters were you.
00:19:01 Speaker 2
Weren't going to buy this book.
00:19:02 Speaker 1
Yeah. What were these like, $4.00? Or I'm trying to think.
00:19:06 Speaker 2
I kind of remember them being current comics.
00:19:16 Speaker 2
The quality but.
00:19:19 Speaker 2
You know it is.
00:19:21 Speaker 2
A little bit more expensive, especially for the time. It was a lot of.
00:19:25 Speaker 2
With, you know that was supposedly A twist.
00:19:29 Speaker 2
The mystery person that Batman phone call.
00:19:32 Speaker 2
Was A twist.
00:19:34 Speaker 1
Yeah, I'm glad he glad he carries change in his pocket.
00:19:38 Speaker 2
That's why they're, you know, it's like.
00:19:42 Speaker 1
Right.
00:19:43 Speaker 2
Making the claim belt deals where they pop out.
00:19:48 Speaker 2
Quarters and nickels.
00:19:49 Speaker 2
Each of his tubes.
00:19:50 Speaker 2
Facility belt are the right size or Dimes and nickels.
00:19:54 Speaker 1
Right.
00:19:55 Speaker 2
But you know, that would have been considered A twist, but at the same point it was kind of like.
00:20:01 Speaker 1
OK.
00:20:02 Speaker 1
Right. Well, and then, you know, when we talk about Jon Stewart's big event, his, his arrogance.
00:20:11 Speaker 1
And then him going at it alone.
00:20:13 Speaker 1
The big twist was.
00:20:16 Speaker 1
The surprise of the color of the bomb that they go after, you know, it's just.
00:20:21 Speaker 1
I don't know. It wasn't enough for me, you know.
00:20:23 Speaker 1
Especially especially on a reread. Maybe I I don't think it was enough on the initial read either, but especially on the reread when I'm older and wiser. It was like you know.
00:20:32 Speaker 1
I wish it had been something else.
00:20:35 Speaker 2
Yeah, and more cynical.
00:20:39 Speaker 1
Book two disaster opens up with Ryan and Superman and again we get magnolias. Art is great, like I in the coloring makes it even better. Steve Ola Oliff not Olaf. Steve Oliff makes this comic. Yeah, makes this comic.
00:20:59 Speaker 1
Worth just looking at like, even even if you never read a word of it, just the art and the coloring.
00:21:06 Speaker 1
It's fantastic.
00:21:08 Speaker 2
And it holds up to today's standard.
00:21:10 Speaker 1
Big time and all that.
00:21:14 Speaker 2
With the computers, Photoshop and all the other.
00:21:17 Speaker 2
You know.
00:21:19 Speaker 2
Art programs out there.
00:21:21 Speaker 2
For just simply for coloring, it's like my gosh.
00:21:23 Speaker 2
This still holds up really, really well.
00:21:25 Speaker 1
Yeah, my my funny thing on the first page we have these thanagarians coming off in the distance and.
00:21:34 Speaker 1
Orion and Superman are staring at him and Orion points out that these Stan Algerians are known for their belligerent attitudes, and I'm thinking.
00:21:45 Speaker 1
Well, Orion's known to be the most belligerent person in the DC Universe really. So I'm not like, does why does he even care, you know?
00:21:56 Speaker 1
Right, exactly.
00:21:58 Speaker 1
And then, you know, they're.
00:22:00 Speaker 1
They they talk about how the anti life aspect.
00:22:04 Speaker 1
You know what kind of powers?
00:22:05 Speaker 1
This thing could have.
00:22:07 Speaker 1
And of course, right away, Orion says. Well, it's got it's got to have mental control over these creatures, you know, all of these things thanagarians. So they have to be controlled because they're coming at us because they're flying at us. Why else?
00:22:19 Speaker 1
Would they fly at us?
00:22:21 Speaker 1
They've got to be controlled and of course they are, you know, it was just it was an odd choice.
00:22:30 Speaker 1
To point out.
00:22:31 Speaker 1
When nothing has happened yet, like there's there's they just got to the planet. It's a winged race of creature, of of natives, of course. They're flying at you. There's they. They didn't do anything else, and they're going to protect their planet. Whether they're controlled or not. It's just it was just a weird thing to say. I mean, it was obviously.
00:22:51 Speaker 1
Plot point here. Here they're going to feed you this information about what the anti life aspect can do.
00:22:58 Speaker 1
And I made a list throughout the entire series of the powers of the anti life aspect.
00:23:04 Speaker 1
And how bizarre of a choice.
00:23:08 Speaker 1
That Jim Starlin made and I'm just going to go through it now, even though we haven't reviewed more the the OK, the powers of the anti life aspect. So he can he can mind control. He can turn into an ooze. He can create a pandemic.
00:23:24 Speaker 1
He can cause madness.
00:23:27 Speaker 1
Does he? He does that on Ron or Rand. As I say, Ron, but he can weather control and he can Internet shop that that was one of his powers.
00:23:40 Speaker 2
Oh well, that's why.
00:23:42 Speaker 2
The like the place just showed up on Cyber Monday.
00:23:45 Speaker 1
Right. And his ultimate goal is to build this bomb, which he can make in any color he he would like to blow up the planet, which then blows up the universe, right. He just makes a bomb. He has all these powers of this cosmos.
00:24:01 Speaker 1
Mind control.
00:24:03 Speaker 1
Create a pandemic caused madness. He can control the Internet and he just wants to.
00:24:10 Speaker 1
Make a bomb.
00:24:11 Speaker 2
And the fact, I mean it's it's the same bomb.
00:24:15 Speaker 1
Great, right?
00:24:16 Speaker 2
All the planets Saxon bomb. Here's this.
00:24:21 Speaker 2
Feature of this entity power that shows up.
00:24:25 Speaker 2
And it's like if there was more.
00:24:27 Speaker 2
Of it it.
00:24:27 Speaker 2
Would cause the world to, you know, the universes to explode. But they only release aspects.
00:24:32 Speaker 2
And so these aspects?
00:24:34 Speaker 2
And the fact that they're so new to this universe, you know, to blow up whatever size planet.
00:24:39 Speaker 1
Right.
00:24:45 Speaker 1
The chain reaction in the core of the planet, I believe. Yeah. So he mine. Mine controls the thanagarians.
00:24:53 Speaker 1
On the planet Zanchi, which is the red shirt planet, he creates A pandemic disease where he's killing all the natives. Like why didn't he? Why didn't he just mind control all the natives? Or why didn't he just kill all the thanagarians with the panda? Like why I'm trying to figure out why.
00:25:14 Speaker 1
He chose.
00:25:15 Speaker 1
I mean, I understand it's the writers choice, but it just seemed the cosmic entity was not very intelligent. And maybe that's to their advantage. Maybe that was what Starling was going for, but a plot hole exist.
00:25:32 Speaker 2
Yeah, and it's.
00:25:34 Speaker 2
Yeah, there's there's a lot like if you got if.
00:25:37 Speaker 2
You can control the entire populace of the planet.
00:25:42 Speaker 2
Whom you have had them make multiple bombs.
00:25:44 Speaker 1
Right, no, just one. That's all we needed is one. That's all you can make.
00:25:49
We can take.
00:25:50 Speaker 2
Out this one that's.
00:25:52 Speaker 2
All we're going to need to do.
00:25:54 Speaker 2
But yeah, the weather control thing was a little like, OK, so and penegar only did one thing, and that was controlled the entire population of these guardian.
00:26:06 Speaker 1
Guardian, whatever.
00:26:06
Right.
00:26:08 Speaker 2
But that's it. Did that. That was it. But on the red shirt planet, not only like you said.
00:26:16 Speaker 2
You know, it created some sort of pestilence that was dooming everybody.
00:26:21 Speaker 2
But it additionally.
00:26:25 Speaker 1
The weather control. Great, yeah.
00:26:29 Speaker 2
How? Like even then it was like if you you could cause.
00:26:33 Speaker 2
Pestles, why wouldn't you just destroyed the entire plant?
00:26:36 Speaker 1
Right.
00:26:37 Speaker 2
They're going and have that instead.
00:26:40 Speaker 2
But you know, when you control the minds of the one entire planet?
00:26:45 Speaker 2
And then you.
00:26:47 Speaker 2
Pestilence would have been enough on another planet, but then they're going, you know, I'm going to add 1.
00:26:52 Speaker 2
More layer and that's weather control.
00:26:54 Speaker 2
And it's like, wow, this is totally random.
00:26:58 Speaker 2
Yet you know, they all make the same bomb.
00:27:01 Speaker 2
And the way it goes.
00:27:04 Speaker 1
Convenient that all the parts on every world were the same. I mean, the bomb was identical.
00:27:09 Speaker 2
Yeah, yeah. Didn't matter. What? You know how backwards the planet might have been. How you know this is the planet of Planet of pure magic. Or this is a planet with no technology.
00:27:21 Speaker 2
We don't have metal.
00:27:23 Speaker 2
On our planet, yet here they are.
00:27:26 Speaker 2
They somehow they're able to make.
00:27:27 Speaker 2
It all there was.
00:27:28 Speaker 2
A little bit of a weirdness and I.
00:27:30 Speaker 2
Don't know this.
00:27:31 Speaker 2
Seems right to.
00:27:32 Speaker 2
You but Jon Stewart making an antidote that quickly.
00:27:40 Speaker 2
Need to be kind of.
00:27:41 Speaker 2
Like like they had one.
00:27:42 Speaker 2
Thing to focus on that was to find this thing and.
00:27:47 Speaker 2
You know, stop the anti life equation from making this bomb and this right various worlds.
00:27:53 Speaker 2
But apparently he's able to whip up.
00:27:56 Speaker 2
A universal vaccine for the entire population makes it simple one.
00:28:02 Speaker 2
And then just assumes hands it off to somebody like some almost.
00:28:05 Speaker 2
Stranger on the street.
00:28:07 Speaker 2
It says OK, duplicate this and it's like.
00:28:09 Speaker 2
But wouldn't that be made out of green energy?
00:28:13 Speaker 2
Remember, you're not like some real chemical.
00:28:16 Speaker 2
Compound. Or am I offering the use of? How?
00:28:19 Speaker 2
Green lanterns work.
00:28:20 Speaker 1
Well, I mean, the the abilities of the ring change with the writers, and there was some earlier stories where that the ring could do marvelous like things like this. Like, yeah, I mean it's it's like, you know, some writers take it as a magic ring that.
00:28:37 Speaker 1
And do anything, it's just the will of the character. You know that controls it can do later on it. It would be kind of more limited to its abilities. That, of course could still do energy constructs and stuff like that, but it it wouldn't necessarily.
00:28:54 Speaker 1
Be able to instantly create this vaccine even though the ring is intelligent. It's it. It's never seems to me like it's super intelligent like it. It could cure every disease that ever was brought to it. You know, why didn't John do that on Earth if he could do this?
00:29:11 Speaker 2
Yeah, I mean, you got people dying of AIDS. You have people, you know, it's like, well, everybody's done it. You know, the current COVID, you know, it's like it's going to save us all. It's like.
00:29:25 Speaker 1
Right.
00:29:28 Speaker 2
Well, that would be.
00:29:29 Speaker 2
Nice. But then yeah, it diminishes the usefulness of the individual.
00:29:34 Speaker 2
Green Lantern. If the ring is.
00:29:36 Speaker 2
That smart and it's able to do everything on its own. Then it's more about.
00:29:42 Speaker 2
The ring just need.
00:29:42 Speaker 2
Somebody to hold.
00:29:43 Speaker 2
It and the ring does it all.
00:29:45 Speaker 2
Versus the the person holding the ring does it, and they empower the ring based on their own experiences.
00:29:54 Speaker 2
Wasn't that like one of the key things about?
00:29:56 Speaker 2
That Kyle Rayner, Green Lantern, was that he was a comic artist or an artist of some sort. And so that gave him a lot of imagination and his.
00:30:06 Speaker 2
His imagination is what the power of the ring.
00:30:10 Speaker 1
Yeah, definitely. And Jeff Johns, when he did, he did his run of Green Lantern.
00:30:16 Speaker 1
He kind of defined each.
00:30:18 Speaker 1
Earthling character and how they use the ring and and he did a really good job making each one kind of an individual like John was shown to be an architect, so he would he would make his his constructs from the inside out like how it was built with the rivets and and.
00:30:38 Speaker 1
Screws and that's how his was where Kyle Rayner would be more imaginative. Suits of armor, you know, we're just crazy Iron Man armor kind of thing. And and Ray guns and stuff like that where John's would be.
00:30:51 Speaker 1
Or symmetrical and everything made sense and house was more like, you know, I'm going to hit you with a bat, you know, like.
00:31:01 Speaker 1
It was.
00:31:01 Speaker 1
It was simple, simplified weapons. I mean, not all the time.
00:31:07 Speaker 1
But you know, his was more ease.
00:31:11 Speaker 1
Of use rather than complicated, but yeah, practical. So John said a good job of that and.
00:31:18 Speaker 2
No. OK.
00:31:22 Speaker 1
His series his series is really good.
00:31:25 Speaker 2
Yeah. I one thing about this issue too.
00:31:28 Speaker 2
That kind of bothered me.
00:31:31 Speaker 2
And to give back to some of.
00:31:32 Speaker 2
The plot elements it's like.
00:31:34 Speaker 2
There's these amazing things going on and all these.
00:31:37 Speaker 2
Worlds, except for Earth pestles on the regular planet.
00:31:41
You know.
00:31:42 Speaker 3
Total domination of the.
00:31:44 Speaker 2
Minds of all the you know, inhabitants of another planet.
00:31:48 Speaker 2
And weather control back on the red shirt and then, you know, madness, absolute, unadulterated like, you know, pandemonium going on on Adam Strings's planet.
00:32:01 Speaker 3
On earth.
00:32:02
Much nothing.
00:32:04 Speaker 2
And in fact, so much so that apparently Batman, the world's greatest detective, decides that.
00:32:12 Speaker 2
The best use of his time instead of trying to do it is be fashion.
00:32:17 Speaker 2
Designer or one of the?
00:32:20 Speaker 2
Yeah. And it's like ohh.
00:32:25 Speaker 2
Why Batman cannot have just one costume?
00:32:29 Speaker 3
You know it's.
00:32:29 Speaker 2
Like, I would assume that Alfred has.
00:32:31 Speaker 2
Already made a bunch.
00:32:31 Speaker 2
Of Batman suits.
00:32:32 Speaker 2
Or something, but to say.
00:32:34 Speaker 2
Let's get you in a.
00:32:36 Speaker 2
Better sense about it, whatever it's like.
00:32:41 Speaker 2
You know, it just seemed like all.
00:32:43 Speaker 2
These other ones.
00:32:43 Speaker 2
Were battling planet Wise planet wide catastrophes.
00:32:49 Speaker 2
And Batman is like.
00:32:50 Speaker 2
Going let's do.
00:32:51 Speaker 2
Some clothing. Let's go. Clothing shopping. You know, it's like your health.
00:32:55 Speaker 2
Is just atrocious. Let's.
00:32:56 Speaker 2
Find something better?
00:32:59 Speaker 2
Like, OK, that seems a little weak, you know again.
00:33:03 Speaker 2
You know, everything's happening. Massive scale on all the other planets. Earth.
00:33:10 Speaker 2
Not much, nothing.
00:33:11 Speaker 2
Like with the last episode was, you know, everybody.
00:33:16 Speaker 2
Seemed to be paired off.
00:33:18 Speaker 2
With, you know, some really powerful.
00:33:21 Speaker 2
You know characters and you know like like Ray and the able to manipulate the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Amazing power.
00:33:29 Speaker 2
Superman, obviously you.
00:33:31 Speaker 2
Know his. His whole name tells you what he's about.
00:33:34 Speaker 2
He's the man.
00:33:35
And then.
00:33:36 Speaker 2
The two weakest no powers whatsoever.
00:33:41 Speaker 2
You guys are hot.
00:33:43 Speaker 1
Yeah, better yet, let's put them on Earth, where the whole you know where we care the most about the planet. You know where the reader where the reader wants the earth to survive, you know. But I did like all those two were doing a fashion show. Jim Starlin did include on Ron.
00:34:00 Speaker 1
Ran Adam strange. I mean, you almost have to when you use that planet in your story, you have to include the character that's most famous on it. And I've always loved that character, so I'm glad.
00:34:12 Speaker 1
He showed up and they used him. I mean, they didn't use him very well, but but I I was glad he showed up. Yeah. Then you know, you cut back and forth through the story as everyone's trying to find their their anti life aspect. People start finding the bombs. And like we said it it.
00:34:32 Speaker 1
It's always the same design and during the red shirt planets, you know John Stewart, Green Lantern decides he can do this on his own, puts John Jones, Martian Manhunter off on.
00:34:48 Speaker 1
You know, on a distant land or something. I don't know where he where he sent him to and then finds the bomb. And of course, the bomb has been painted yellow, which at that time the Green Lantern ring could not affect whatsoever. That's since been revised a bit. But back then anything yellow.
00:35:08 Speaker 1
They couldn't affect at all, and of course that shocks John Stewart and the planet and everyone around it. And then the Galaxy or that part of the Galaxy anyway.
00:35:20 Speaker 1
Is destroyed. Luckily, our main characters survive.
00:35:26 Speaker 2
Somehow manages even though it blows the planet up and people are vaporized.
00:35:33 Speaker 2
Group, you know Marshall man Harrison.
00:35:35 Speaker 2
This little bubble in the old.
00:35:36 Speaker 2
Purse, but clearly leaving him exposed. But then a few, you know, the very next page it has protected instead.
00:35:44 Speaker 2
Of a comment bubble.
00:35:45 Speaker 2
It's a.
00:35:47 Speaker 2
Eight women.
00:35:48
Film crowd.
00:35:51 Speaker 2
Wait, wasn't it? What's the difference? Yeah, you. You took the drama away by saying like he's no longer protected, but he's always protected. He.
00:35:53 Speaker 1
Right.
00:36:02 Speaker 2
Was a cool art when?
00:36:03 Speaker 2
The green, you know, shards.
00:36:05 Speaker 2
Floated around him, instantly nullified by the very next panel where he's so back.
00:36:11 Speaker 2
Wrapped up in green.
00:36:14 Speaker 1
Planet exploded. Wonderful choices for panels, you know Mineola, I mean, that's he should be doing big fights, monsters, planets exploding.
00:36:28 Speaker 1
And maybe that isn't even him. Maybe it it's, you know, Steve Oliff, but, you know, again, the art is worth looking at.
00:36:36 Speaker 1
Even though this, even though the story.
00:36:38 Speaker 1
Has some plot holes.
00:36:40 Speaker 2
Well, yeah, it's definitely a case of elevating the story beyond what it's, you know.
00:36:46 Speaker 2
It it can.
00:36:47 Speaker 2
Be rightly justified by saying you know.
00:36:51 Speaker 2
Yeah, if you were to just any anybody else part with this story, this would have been completely forgotten.
00:36:57
Yeah, but the.
00:36:58 Speaker 2
Manual is artwork.
00:37:00 Speaker 2
Then all of a sudden it's like.
00:37:01 Speaker 2
Oh, OK, this is not some value, right?
00:37:05 Speaker 3
Now I'm going to.
00:37:05 Speaker 2
Throw one bit of question at you.
00:37:08 Speaker 2
Did you find it in? Not just like I love the fact that marshmallow out of everybody is the one character who's got the most random assortment of powers.
00:37:19
Did you?
00:37:20 Speaker 2
Notice one slot, at least in the.
00:37:22 Speaker 2
Whole situation, it kind of goes back, you know, the the nerd superhero question of can.
00:37:28 Speaker 3
Wolverines claws, which are you know, unbreakable razor. Sharp cut through Captain America.
00:37:35 Speaker 2
'S shield, which is made out of the.
00:37:37 Speaker 2
Same thing.
00:37:38 Speaker 2
You know, it's like whose power could override the other person's power, but.
00:37:42 Speaker 2
One of the things.
00:37:43 Speaker 2
That kind of confused me is.
00:37:44 Speaker 2
That Martian Manhunter can become.
00:37:47 Speaker 2
Intangible, right? You.
00:37:48 Speaker 2
Can pretty much drift through anything.
00:37:52 Speaker 3
Float through solid.
00:37:53 Speaker 2
Objects in and out. Why didn't he?
00:37:55 Speaker 2
Get trapped in a.
00:37:58 Speaker 1
In theory, but maybe the energy bubble he couldn't do that, I don't know. But in theory, he should have been able to go through anything. It's kind of like the vision, you know, I mean, the other thing is he he's.
00:38:10 Speaker 1
He's at this time especially he's vulnerable to flame and fire, and I wonder why.
00:38:17 Speaker 1
He how he survived this big giant fireball in the face.
00:38:21 Speaker 1
You know, but maybe I mean, the ring protected him, I guess.
00:38:26 Speaker 2
Well, yeah, they said that the read protect them, but wasn't it the fact that it caused? It wasn't like it was a version of kryptonite for surgery, but it also created like.
00:38:35 Speaker 2
A huge amount.
00:38:36 Speaker 2
Of fear, I mean he.
00:38:37 Speaker 2
Was like deadly.
00:38:39 Speaker 2
Afraid of fire as well as being vulnerable to it.
00:38:43 Speaker 2
And it did.
00:38:44 Speaker 2
Seems like.
00:38:45 Speaker 2
Yeah, you were literally like the bulk of the planet got flung into it. The sun. Get those little aspiring remnants here or there. And Marsh Manhunter just was.
00:38:55 Speaker 2
Like, yeah, that was cool.
00:38:56 Speaker 2
Like down here.
00:39:05 Speaker 2
The core tenants.
00:39:06 Speaker 2
And one of the things.
00:39:06 Speaker 2
That make the DC universe all the more unique.
00:39:10 Speaker 2
Is the fact that a lot of them have.
00:39:12 Speaker 2
Core limitations that almost make no sense. The kryptonite. The yellow. The you know the fire.
00:39:20 Speaker 3
Irrational need to.
00:39:22 Speaker 2
Give a Riddle or say a joke or whatever. These are things that only exist in the DC universe. They were never really adopted by any other publisher and it's like.
00:39:33 Speaker 2
And what made March man hunter?
00:39:34 Speaker 2
As powerful as he.
00:39:36 Speaker 2
Was there was 1 little thing.
00:39:38 Speaker 3
That stopped him, and that was fire and to have.
00:39:41 Speaker 3
A hole and he.
00:39:41 Speaker 2
Said a whole planet burst.
00:39:43 Speaker 2
Into flames and he's like.
00:39:46 Speaker 2
No big deal. I'm cool. I've recovered.
00:39:49 Speaker 2
I was like, oh, well, like kind of, this is one of the key.
00:39:52 Speaker 2
Components of the character.
00:39:54 Speaker 1
And issue 3 is kind of the oddball, like nothing really happens in issue 3. I mean it does and it doesn't like the art. Still very pretty, but it's really like the placeholder for issue.
00:40:07 Speaker 1
Or the heroes are trying to get, you know, to the bomb. They're discovering exactly what, what the aspect can do. Some great mannola scenes with Superman. He's always in, you know, he's in shadow. You don't really have to draw his face any, any, any, any fights, this giant.
00:40:27 Speaker 1
Robot, which another aspect. Another power of this aspect has is he can build giant robot but just one.
00:40:34 Speaker 1
One giant robot and then Superman does that with a giant robot. I mean, what else does an issue need?
00:40:41 Speaker 1
Other than that, and for me that was that was a great fit.
00:40:45 Speaker 2
Yeah. One of the things that I thought was an interesting take, again, visually speaking, fully agree to make mostly in shadow. I mean it's just like I'm going to make a silhouette.
00:40:57 Speaker 2
Of this hero dropping.
00:40:59 Speaker 2
Almost the entire issue surely silhouette?
00:41:03 Speaker 2
But the heat vision I thought that was an interesting approach where, you know, like Todd McFarlane took Michael Golden's approach to spraygrounds webs. We're always in this more like this liquidy, globular kind of quality where I.
00:41:20 Speaker 2
Had all the little spinny.
00:41:21 Speaker 2
Little options.
00:41:25 Speaker 2
You know, he took heat vision and basically said, yeah, this is heat vision.
00:41:29 Speaker 2
Not a laser.
00:41:30 Speaker 2
Which most artists.
00:41:32 Speaker 2
Still represented as being a laser like his.
00:41:34 Speaker 3
Eyes glow red.
00:41:36 Speaker 2
And but it just.
00:41:37 Speaker 2
Shoots like a.
00:41:38 Speaker 2
Perfect beam. Right out here somewhere and burns the body.
00:41:45 Speaker 2
And with his heaven as the heat emits from his eyes.
00:41:49 Speaker 2
Then it it becomes more.
00:41:50 Speaker 2
Combustible and it it becomes kind of.
00:41:52 Speaker 2
The wild nature of flame with flickers here or there. The flashes of flame all over. I thought that.
00:41:59 Speaker 2
Was a pretty interesting take on kind of.
00:42:02 Speaker 3
The classic power he's.
00:42:04 Speaker 2
At all this time, but.
00:42:05 Speaker 2
For some reason, no one really.
00:42:06 Speaker 2
Represented as being really heat that causes fire.
00:42:11 Speaker 1
Right. Yeah, good point and great to look at art wise.
00:42:15 Speaker 2
Yeah. And it's just it gives it a.
00:42:17 Speaker 2
Separation from any other you know, like he's got a Rolodex of super eyeballs, you know, it's like, oh, got pull up this.
00:42:25 Speaker 2
One and you know, popping my X-ray contacts or pulling my telescopic pull in my microscopic vision.
00:42:33 Speaker 2
All of that stuff.
00:42:35 Speaker 2
But this one was like heat vision and it's like Oh yeah.
00:42:38 Speaker 2
This is something that.
00:42:40 Speaker 2
You know.
00:42:41 Speaker 2
At least he approached it differently because he does use X-ray written previously. He discovered this bomb.
00:42:49 Speaker 2
And you know, he looks at the.
00:42:50 Speaker 2
Floor and it's like he goes it.
00:42:52 Speaker 2
Out again one of.
00:42:53 Speaker 2
The you know you could not have.
00:42:55 Speaker 2
Done that prior to computer coloring and computer separations and printing where it was ghosted back.
00:43:05 Speaker 2
To kind of help represent the element of the being.
00:43:09 Speaker 2
Actually the you know, he looks through the floor and then you can kind of see the ghosted version.
00:43:15 Speaker 1
Of that bomb.
00:43:17 Speaker 1
Yeah, good stuff. And of course we get light, light ray and Starfire and their encounter with the bomb. The aspect is a is a goo, an oily goo that is flammable and light. Ray didn't realize it. And then Starfire, Starfire did. And of course, she sets it on fire and it defeats the aspect.
00:43:31
Is there?
00:43:37 Speaker 1
Is that basically what happened?
00:43:39 Speaker 2
I read it is that you know.
00:43:41 Speaker 2
I guess her hair causes Jet Propulsion.
00:43:44
I can't remember how.
00:43:45 Speaker 2
I knew whenever they threw her.
00:43:48 Speaker 2
That was took off fly.
00:43:50 Speaker 2
It was always like her hair that would just kind of give that fence. But I didn't realize that it was really her hair that felt flame out and that caused.
00:44:02 Speaker 2
The gassy gasoline gelatin to go all napalm, and I was in a teen Titans fan, so I didn't know if that's really the case or that was just an aesthetic that, you know, whenever she flew she would fly so fast that her hair, which she always had copious amounts of.
00:44:20 Speaker 2
Would look as if.
00:44:21 Speaker 3
They were just.
00:44:22 Speaker 2
Going on forever.
00:44:24 Speaker 2
But I guess this particular interpretation it actually that was.
00:44:28 Speaker 2
She can't fly her hair can and it's attached to her head.
00:44:34 Speaker 1
Yeah, marv. Wolfman is cringing at that comment, I'm sure.
00:44:40 Speaker 2
I don't want this past.
00:44:41 Speaker 1
No, he didn't.
00:44:44 Speaker 2
Oh, oh, Danny O'Neill.
00:44:48 Speaker 2
He passed away then.
00:44:49 Speaker 1
He did a while ago.
00:44:52 Speaker 2
Some reason?
00:44:53 Speaker 1
No, he's still alive. I follow him on Facebook, so I know we're friends. Yeah, right.
00:45:00 Speaker 2
Class 1 encounter with Marvel.
00:45:06 Speaker 2
Indian Comic Con and.
00:45:09 Speaker 2
I feel kind of bad about it, but at the same point he looked.
00:45:12 Speaker 2
At me, as if.
00:45:12 Speaker 2
I had superpowers.
00:45:15 Speaker 2
So I'm like Comic Con, somebody comes by.
00:45:17 Speaker 2
Our booze that we had at the show and.
00:45:23 Speaker 2
They just left the comic on counter and I kept our counters, our booth spaces clean as possible and so I grabbed that comic and I just put it off to the side. Will it happen to be a tenth use that Marv Wolfman happened to write later that same day? Maybe within, like, an hour and a half.
00:45:43 Speaker 2
Me saying that come to the side, Marv. Wolfman, of all people shows up at our booth and.
00:45:47 Speaker 2
Starts looking at the various you know, products that.
00:45:50 Speaker 2
I worked on.
00:45:51 Speaker 2
And stuff we had.
00:45:52 Speaker 2
Available and you know and I look at, it's like, hey, aren't you Mark. And he goes, yeah.
00:45:57 Speaker 2
Yeah. It's like, hey, would you mind signing something?
00:46:01 Speaker 2
And I literally just.
00:46:02 Speaker 2
Turn around and grab that comic which you just was sitting out there and I come and I lay it.
00:46:07 Speaker 2
On the table and he.
00:46:08 Speaker 2
Looks at me like.
00:46:09 Speaker 2
You had this comic here just.
00:46:11 Speaker 2
Laying out.
00:46:12 Speaker 2
Waiting for him to just show.
00:46:14 Speaker 2
Up. No, not knowing it wasn't like we.
00:46:17 Speaker 2
Were scheduled to have him there or.
00:46:18 Speaker 2
Anything and it's just like hey.
00:46:21 Speaker 2
You know, and he looked at me like.
00:46:23
How did you know I was?
00:46:24 Speaker 2
Coming, you know.
00:46:25
I was.
00:46:25 Speaker 3
Just like.
00:46:26 Speaker 2
I was like, I almost was like, yes, I have second abilities I have, you know, one of the.
00:46:32 Speaker 2
Heroes you write about.
00:46:34 Speaker 2
But it was just like a.
00:46:35 Speaker 2
Weird. Like if somebody didn't happen to.
00:46:38 Speaker 2
Just leave a comic on the counter and that comic hadn't been written by Marv Wolfman. And then within moments, he shows up.
00:46:46 Speaker 1
I saw it in my dreams.
00:46:49 Speaker 2
Shedding kidding, that's like.
00:46:50 Speaker 2
This to happen you are my density.
00:46:53 Speaker 1
Pretty cool.
00:46:54 Speaker 2
One thing, and I don't know, this is a little bit of an issue I had too was the left in this issue was very consistent except for when light ray yells. Corey made the bomb. So I mean the lettering and this is very consistent. Everything about it is.
00:47:08
OK.
00:47:14 Speaker 2
Just but the previous previous page has like she meant saying wrong.
00:47:19 Speaker 2
And a huge.
00:47:21 Speaker 2
Font, you know, letters overlapping clearly.
00:47:25 Speaker 2
When two men was you?
00:47:26 Speaker 2
Know, enraged by the sheer destructiveness of Orion, he yells all wrong and it's colored font. It's got the graduation from the dark.
00:47:36 Speaker 3
Orange to the yellow.
00:47:38 Speaker 2
You know, he's yelled it out.
00:47:41 Speaker 2
But then you go.
00:47:41 Speaker 2
To the next page, and clearly you know, light rays yelling out for Corey.
00:47:46 Speaker 2
Trying to get her attention. Nothing.
00:47:48 Speaker 2
Nothing. And then the very next page, it's like Corey and it's using a very.
00:47:54 Speaker 2
Like Helvetica font, it's.
00:47:56 Speaker 2
The only time in this entire book.
00:47:59 Speaker 2
That font is used.
00:48:01 Speaker 2
And it it was.
00:48:03 Speaker 2
Very jarring. It almost looked like.
00:48:06 Speaker 2
This is somebody else is a.
00:48:08 Speaker 2
You spelt the name wrong.
00:48:09 Speaker 1
Right. Yeah, it does look like a editorial came in and said something like whatever was in that balloon. They said, Nope, that's not what he's going to say here because he uses this. Like you said, he uses Corey twice on the previous page, and it's all the same font. The the same looking. And then you go to the next page.
00:48:29 Speaker 1
And it's like rigid.
00:48:31 Speaker 1
Did and just, you know, obviously something typed out and then they pasted it on there.
00:48:36
And I wonder if it.
00:48:37 Speaker 2
Was like he said, Carrie.
00:48:38 Speaker 2
You know the the Mark Hamill.
00:48:42 Speaker 2
You know, conspiracy of.
00:48:44 Speaker 2
You know, he lands.
00:48:45 Speaker 2
After the destroying the death * and he yells out Carrie.
00:48:50 Speaker 1
Right, yeah.
00:48:51 Speaker 2
They realized he he he's not supposed to say. Carrie her.
00:48:54
Name is Corey.
00:48:55 Speaker 2
I'll take this. You guys are good. I trust you can do it. That's right.
00:49:00 Speaker 2
You know it's.
00:49:00 Speaker 2
Like hey, my name is light ray and my voice is like this and then.
00:49:04 Speaker 2
It's like.
00:49:05 Speaker 1
Yeah, even everything else on that page is the same font, except that word balloon. I never noticed that till you said that. That's pretty. That's pretty weird. It wasn't jarring for me, but you know, it was jarring for you. You, you, you fought snob.
00:49:19 Speaker 2
Levering was still done.
00:49:22 Speaker 1
Oh yeah.
00:49:22 Speaker 2
Legitimate letterer, but this seems like it was probably like one of those, like electric set words where they just kind of like, you know, had it, like you said, you know, editorial you must.
00:49:32 Speaker 2
Have said something.
00:49:33 Speaker 2
Different or the word was right. You dropped the F bomb and they're like you can't have.
00:49:39 Speaker 2
The F bomb.
00:49:40 Speaker 3
In this.
00:49:41 Speaker 2
We're going to have him say something else.
00:49:43 Speaker 3
Oh, how about he says her?
00:49:44 Speaker 2
Name again for like the 3rd or 4th right? Like. Oh yeah. OK, that'll.
00:49:48 Speaker 2
Work. Can you just make that?
00:49:49 Speaker 2
Happen. Yep. And instead of handwriting it, they just said, well, let's just grab these letters.
00:49:54 Speaker 2
We can, you know.
00:49:56 Speaker 2
Finish down onto this.
00:49:57 Speaker 2
Thing it's like.
00:49:59 Speaker 1
Yeah, a lot of these these sound effects and stuff like that remind me of simonson's run on Thor and stuff like that like he was.
00:50:07 Speaker 1
Like on the you know this the big huge letters and and I don't know if we ever said who lettered this, but they did a good job too, I don't think.
00:50:17 Speaker 1
It was Simonson. Was it?
00:50:20 Speaker 2
No, but Howard shaken.
00:50:22 Speaker 2
You know, often would do.
00:50:24 Speaker 2
That well, I can't remember who.
00:50:25 Speaker 2
Did it first but.
00:50:26 Speaker 2
I knew that.
00:50:27 Speaker 2
We can believe it was a protege for a while. Walt Simonson.
00:50:33 Speaker 1
Oh, I didn't know that.
00:50:36 Speaker 3
You know, Simonson was.
00:50:39 Speaker 2
Both. I think her name is Louise Simpson and Walt. They helped mentor nurture so many artists.
00:50:47 Speaker 2
Over the years.
00:50:48 Speaker 2
And Keegan was one of them. But if you look at Jenkins American flag, he used a lot of that same kind of approach for the lettering of in fact, I think his, if you remember American flag, he actually had that song that he repeat whenever they shot.
00:51:08 Speaker 2
Guns. So like when they shot?
00:51:11 Speaker 2
It would say PP.
00:51:12 Speaker 2
And then as the blast goes and then.
00:51:16 Speaker 2
It hit my mouth.
00:51:18 Speaker 3
So it's like PPP.
00:51:21 Speaker 2
That song was in the lettering.
00:51:24 Speaker 2
Of when American plywood sheets up.
00:51:27 Speaker 1
I didn't know that. That's that's really strange and funny.
00:51:31 Speaker 2
Yeah. Yeah. And it was.
00:51:33 Speaker 2
Like and why? No idea. I don't know if it was like an Easter egg before there was like Easter eggs or what.
00:51:39 Speaker 2
But it was just like such a.
00:51:41 Speaker 2
Weird thing and that remember that, but yeah, there's clearly that references inspiration from simonson's use of.
00:51:50 Speaker 2
Type of font.
00:51:51 Speaker 3
Approach a word.
00:51:52 Speaker 2
You know, and having the sound effect be a graphic on its own.
00:51:57 Speaker 2
Very, very nice. But yeah, like you.
00:51:59 Speaker 2
Said, you know, they don't.
00:52:00 Speaker 2
Really. Give the credits and I'm not seeing.
00:52:04 Speaker 1
It's on the first page is John Workman, who I don't recognize, but probably did 1000 things I didn't recognize. But yeah, OK then Ron is saved cause of some petroleum Jelly ignition. And my wife's looking at me funny now.
00:52:22 Speaker 1
But uh, right? She looks at me funny anyway, but you know, so that planet is saved.
00:52:28 Speaker 1
As if we thought the planet ran would would blow up in this story, but the aspect gets away because the good we never talked about the devices dark side created to capture these, but they were really flimsy metal objects which would break even if you looked at them.
00:52:49 Speaker 1
And of course, of course, most of them did, except supermans. So of course the aspect got away, but thanks dark side.
00:52:57 Speaker 2
Yeah. And you almost wondered, was that intentional or what? But yeah, they they just they say.
00:53:06 Speaker 2
Yeah, they were. They were never meant.
00:53:07 Speaker 2
To last very long anyway. Yeah, they they just.
00:53:12 Speaker 2
You know, it was a kind of a false hope, you know, and I was kind of looked at, you know, obviously, you know, the equivalent character, the one that was a knock off of this dark side, which is Thanos, was infatuated with death and destruction and.
00:53:30 Speaker 2
All that to happen, and it's like here I.
00:53:33 Speaker 2
Kind of always felt like dark.
00:53:35 Speaker 2
Side would also be.
00:53:37 Speaker 2
For wanting destruction and so forth. But it's.
00:53:40 Speaker 2
Kind of like.
00:53:41 Speaker 2
You know Lizzy intentionally.
00:53:42
Making these flimsy.
00:53:44 Speaker 2
Knowing that it's.
00:53:47 Speaker 2
Never going to work.
00:53:49 Speaker 2
Out the anti life equation and then I'll.
00:53:52 Speaker 2
Be able to, you know, deal with it.
00:53:53 Speaker 1
I'll make them all into petroleum Jelly and then I will ignite them, yeah.
00:53:59 Speaker 2
Again, it's a case of extremely convenient ability.
00:54:03 Speaker 2
Like my hair catches on fire and you happen to be very flammable. Good to have was the one who was sent.
00:54:09 Speaker 2
To this point and then.
00:54:11 Speaker 2
Yeah, like you said, three was kind of a throwaway issue. It was kind of like.
00:54:17 Speaker 2
OK, we have to kind of wrap up a few things. We kind of have to give the heroes something to.
00:54:25 Speaker 2
Kind of work.
00:54:25 Speaker 2
With, you know, they lost one. They won one.
00:54:29 Speaker 2
And they love, you know.
00:54:30 Speaker 2
They want another one, but.
00:54:31 Speaker 2
At a cost of destruction of so.
00:54:33 Speaker 2
Many dental guardians.
00:54:35 Speaker 2
Which I would have liked to have.
00:54:37 Speaker 2
Seen like if.
00:54:37 Speaker 2
There was ever another, you know, like.
00:54:40 Speaker 2
The samagar apocalypse.
00:54:42 Speaker 2
War or something like that, where, like you know?
00:54:45 Speaker 2
Ryan destroyed this. Guess what, thanagar?
00:54:47 Speaker 2
Is calling that up.
00:54:48 Speaker 2
You know, calling in favors to destroy the retaliation.
00:54:53 Speaker 1
Right. Those 10 agrarians get around, though they've been in, in, in so many stories, you know, they're just getting around to it. You know, they've been busy. Book four is called death. So right away, you got to be pretty.
00:55:05 Speaker 1
Psyched about that?
00:55:06 Speaker 2
Yeah, yeah. And it it.
00:55:08 Speaker 2
Was a little bit of a misleading.
00:55:10 Speaker 2
Thing you're thinking like, OK, is it the depth of?
00:55:14 Speaker 2
The universes finally the you know the end of.
00:55:17 Speaker 2
It all is going to kick in or.
00:55:19 Speaker 2
Is it just you know?
00:55:21 Speaker 2
What was the death?
00:55:22 Speaker 2
That they were referencing on the cover.
00:55:25 Speaker 1
Now one thing Minola did and he did it well, but I thought maybe was a little overdone. Was the countdown to 1 panels. There was a number of them in issue.
00:55:38 Speaker 1
Three and issue four starts out and we just get a countdown over and over again. I love. I love you know panels that you know pass time and you can tell. The second goes by you know it's it's it's great arts but it's really repetitive after 2 pages of it.
00:55:57 Speaker 2
Yeah, I don't think Kiefer Sutherland would even have.
00:56:00 Speaker 2
I think you would.
00:56:01 Speaker 2
Have issues with seeing the count down.
00:56:03 Speaker 1
Right. It's like I get it. It's counting down. Move on. But it was well done again.
00:56:14 Speaker 2
But a lot of you know, same art. I always love. Like when it when a panel like that gets repeated I look.
00:56:21 Speaker 2
To see like.
00:56:22 Speaker 2
Is this individually aimed or is it just a reproduction of the same?
00:56:26 Speaker 2
Panel over and over and over again.
00:56:29 Speaker 2
And you can kind of see like, OK.
00:56:30 Speaker 2
Look at the squiggles around this here.
00:56:33 Speaker 2
On the left.
00:56:35 Speaker 2
And is at the same break point like where the ink kind of stops at that point. It's like, yeah.
00:56:41 Speaker 2
So it's just reproduction. So like he drew once.
00:56:44 Speaker 2
And they inked it and then they just copied it over and over again, and then just threw.
00:56:48 Speaker 2
In different letters.
00:56:49 Speaker 1
Right. So I mean, it was a real easy page for him to do, you know.
00:56:53 Speaker 2
So I kind.
00:56:54 Speaker 2
Of quickly have that one where it's.
00:56:56 Speaker 2
Nothing but those.
00:56:58 Speaker 2
And then when it.
00:56:59 Speaker 2
Wasn't that same image repeated over again?
00:57:01 Speaker 2
It was just.
00:57:01 Speaker 2
A jet black white.
00:57:04 Speaker 1
Yeah. With letters? Yeah. Yep.
00:57:06 Speaker 2
One that kind of like it just dawned on.
00:57:08 Speaker 2
Me, but how?
00:57:10 Speaker 2
Prevalent was the use of like Black Edge pages.
00:57:15 Speaker 2
Meaning that you know.
00:57:17 Speaker 2
Almost the bulk of this book.
00:57:20 Speaker 2
In this whole series.
00:57:23 Speaker 2
You know, our work goes all the way out to the edges. Usually. You know when you think about classic Comics, there was always a white gutter that went around every page.
00:57:33 Speaker 2
Because they couldn't like, right as sort of the print to be perfectly.
00:57:36 Speaker 2
Within the page.
00:57:38 Speaker 4
So they couldn't go full bleed.
00:57:40 Speaker 2
And but this one it's like.
00:57:42 Speaker 3
Not only is there a lot.
00:57:44 Speaker 2
Of pages of full.
00:57:44 Speaker 2
Bleed, but the painters are like all the gutters are black.
00:57:50 Speaker 1
Right. And I'm sure that's easy nowadays with.
00:57:52 Speaker 1
Digital digital art. I'm sure they could do that. No problem in three seconds. But yeah, back then, that's a good point that. Did someone actually go in and ink the edges?
00:58:02 Speaker 2
They just filled the whole thing.
00:58:03 Speaker 2
With black it's like.
00:58:06 Speaker 2
You know, and you know, even at that time, this was still kind of like the classic eras of, you know, the gutters being white and like, going all the way to the egg. And that was part of it being with these poor man.
00:58:20 Speaker 2
You know, it's like, OK.
00:58:22 Speaker 2
You know that they could get away.
00:58:24 Speaker 2
With it because it's like uh.
00:58:26 Speaker 2
Perfect bound. You know the format for the comic.
00:58:31 Speaker 2
So they didn't.
00:58:32 Speaker 2
Have to worry about, you know, creep or any of these other things that would cause the arc to shift from.
00:58:37 Speaker 2
Page to page or my spreads?
00:58:38 Speaker 2
Or anything like that but.
00:58:40 Speaker 2
Yeah, this is just.
00:58:41 Speaker 2
Something you just done to me? It's like, why? There's a lot of blackness.
00:58:45 Speaker 1
And at the the book opens up with the countdown and there's a great fight scene with Batman and forward. Finally, Batman and forger try to take out their villain and it's a it is a great fight scene. I mean minola.
00:59:01 Speaker 1
And monsters go hand in hand.
00:59:03 Speaker 1
And his Batman's great too. So you know, I have nothing bad to say about his, his technique and and style. It's it's a great little I wish it was the whole book was like that maybe.
00:59:15 Speaker 2
And this was.
00:59:16 Speaker 2
You know, kind of ambitious was like you look at what manual has done since it's like, you know, his stories are all epic.
00:59:24 Speaker 2
We're still pretty much.
00:59:26 Speaker 3
Down to a couple.
00:59:27 Speaker 2
Of characters he was like, no Hellboy and his.
00:59:30 Speaker 2
You know, PBD, but they weren't like, you know.
00:59:33 Speaker 2
Oh for some.
00:59:34 Speaker 2
Reason this just seems like ohh flashing colored characters and not necessarily what you think of when you think of.
00:59:40 Speaker 2
When you all.
00:59:40 Speaker 2
Today, one thing that did bother me and.
00:59:43 Speaker 2
I don't know. It seemed a little weird about the.
00:59:45 Speaker 2
Character or the story and the whole.
00:59:48 Speaker 2
Was clearly the creature.
00:59:51 Speaker 2
That Batman is fighting.
00:59:53 Speaker 2
Is, you know.
00:59:54 Speaker 2
Empowered by the aspect brought it back to life.
00:59:58 Speaker 2
It's got the drippy, oozy gore of its.
01:00:01 Speaker 2
Core it out gut from issue one. When Batman blasted right.
01:00:07 Speaker 2
So part one of the issue that I.
01:00:09 Speaker 2
Have is like of the spine still intact when the rest.
01:00:13 Speaker 2
Of it is completely bored through.
01:00:16 Speaker 1
You don't need no spine.
01:00:18 Speaker 2
But it's like.
01:00:20 Speaker 2
You know, every every bit of the features.
01:00:24 Speaker 2
You know.
01:00:26 Speaker 2
Aspect it it blasted a whole clean through it, but dead center perfectly intact is the biggest spot, but more of the issue that I had was like OK so this anti life equation can bring.
01:00:41 Speaker 2
A dead entity back to life.
01:00:45 Speaker 2
But the police?
01:00:46 Speaker 2
Officer that he brought back to life.
01:00:49 Speaker 2
Didn't really get brought back to like it was.
01:00:50 Speaker 2
A robot. So.
01:00:53 Speaker 2
I don't get.
01:00:53 Speaker 2
It you know it's.
01:00:54 Speaker 2
Like you can bring back this creature to life, even though it's been completely destroyed. But the police officer.
01:01:04 Speaker 2
Why did it have to be a robot?
01:01:06 Speaker 1
Yeah, Joe Bester is the police officer. You know, I've read this yesterday again and I still never thought that he.
01:01:14 Speaker 1
Was a robot.
01:01:18 Speaker 1
I'm not sure why cause it says right there a robot I must have dozed off on that part or something I.
01:01:24 Speaker 1
Don't know. Yeah, it's like.
01:01:25 Speaker 2
OK, you reanimated dead, dead being. And then here it's like same dead being but this time we decided.
01:01:33 Speaker 2
Let's just change it up a.
01:01:34 Speaker 2
Little bit, I'm going to make this one.
01:01:36 Speaker 1
Well, again, the aspect can only do one thing. He can only make one bomb. He can only animate one of the creatures. You know he can't do more than one thing, that multitasking is not in his Forte.
01:01:50 Speaker 2
Yeah. Yeah, it's like.
01:01:54 Speaker 2
The Legion of superheroes that Superman knockoff character that can only have one of Superman's powers at a time.
01:02:01 Speaker 1
I believe that's Ultra boy.
01:02:04 Speaker 2
Yes, I knew you'd know anybody on the.
01:02:07 Speaker 2
Planet would know.
01:02:08 Speaker 2
Alter boy. Yeah, it's like, you know, I can only activate one of Superman's powers at a time. I've got them all going to do one at a time. It's like I can only reanimate. And once I've done that, I can't reuse that ability.
01:02:22 Speaker 2
That's one of the.
01:02:23 Speaker 2
Things that was.
01:02:24 Speaker 2
Just not really referenced here is that the anti life equation can.
01:02:28 Speaker 2
Only do one thing and then once it's done that thing it can't do it anywhere else at any other time so.
01:02:34 Speaker 2
It's like I can make.
01:02:35 Speaker 2
Pestilence. But I can't make pestilence everywhere.
01:02:37 Speaker 3
I can control the minds.
01:02:39 Speaker 2
Of all these beings, but I can't control the minds I've I've done that.
01:02:42 Speaker 2
Once and I've used up that.
01:02:44 Speaker 2
Ability to do that power.
01:02:46 Speaker 3
And now I have.
01:02:46 Speaker 2
To use some other power somewhere.
01:02:49 Speaker 2
In order to.
01:02:50 Speaker 2
You know to take over this universe.
01:02:51 Speaker 1
Yeah, well, well, Ultra Boy or Jonah, as I call him, you know, he's he's from the planet planet Rimbor. And he was swallowed by a space whale. And that's how he got his power. So maybe the aspect was also swallowed by a space whale.
01:03:08 Speaker 2
Oh yeah, those guys I I've seen.
01:03:10 Speaker 2
Those space mills.
01:03:12 Speaker 1
Let me put my glasses up here.
01:03:15 Speaker 2
And they they just.
01:03:16 Speaker 2
You know, they're always they're really known.
01:03:20
Just random.
01:03:21 Speaker 1
Right. Those darn space whales.
01:03:25 Speaker 2
But yeah, the other aspect and I don't know I.
01:03:27 Speaker 2
Mean this wasn't a.
01:03:28 Speaker 2
Comic code so you know, they clearly showed blood this year, or they showed whatever. But I kept thinking like maybe they wanted.
01:03:37 Speaker 2
To keep the innocence.
01:03:38 Speaker 2
Of forger and that's why they.
01:03:40 Speaker 1
Made it into a robot.
01:03:42 Speaker 1
Ohh yeah, yeah, like he didn't. He didn't choose to kill this person.
01:03:46 Speaker 2
Oh, it's a robot, so.
01:03:47 Speaker 2
It keeps him.
01:03:49 Speaker 2
Kind of the innocent and.
01:03:52 Speaker 1
Well, yeah, it didn't like the comic code authority. I mean, they had already killed the police officer and issue one and showed it. So I'm I'm sure they didn't care about the code. Now on issue 4 that he killed the person, you know?
01:04:07 Speaker 2
This seems odd.
01:04:09 Speaker 2
Yeah, OK, robot.
01:04:12 Speaker 2
OK.
01:04:13 Speaker 2
And again, it goes back.
01:04:14 Speaker 2
To like, OK, you can make a.
01:04:16 Speaker 2
Robot why did you?
01:04:17 Speaker 2
Make it look like the dead police officer.
01:04:19 Speaker 2
Because no one would.
01:04:21 Speaker 2
Care What this robot looked like?
01:04:23 Speaker 2
It wasn't like this robot was going around shopping.
01:04:26 Speaker 2
I was like, oh, good. You're that police officer.
01:04:29 Speaker 2
I'll let you.
01:04:30 Speaker 2
Go ahead and do some shopping.
01:04:31 Speaker 1
Well, the the aspect could Internet browse. So I mean, you know, he didn't need the robot or maybe the robot was doing all the work. I don't know.
01:04:40 Speaker 4
Well, I mean.
01:04:41 Speaker 2
This is, you know, kind of getting down to the granular of like.
01:04:44 Speaker 1
That's what we do.
01:04:46 Speaker 1
But but of course, Batman has, you know, the solar collector thing, and it breaks, you know, the first chance he pulls it out of his, of his Cape. And you know, you wonder why they even carried that thing in or why there was only one for each group. But, you know, plot point, you know, the writer decided that they know that's the answer.
01:05:06 Speaker 1
But you wonder why in the DC Universe, or why dark side only made four and then gave one?
01:05:12 Speaker 1
To each group.
01:05:13 Speaker 2
It was also a terribly convenient.
01:05:18 Speaker 2
You know, it's like.
01:05:19 Speaker 2
You don't know what this thing is.
01:05:21 Speaker 2
Never seen it before, have no real understanding of.
01:05:24 Speaker 3
Its true nature.
01:05:26 Speaker 2
We just know.
01:05:27 Speaker 2
It's running around and I have the perfect device.
01:05:30 Speaker 2
To contain it.
01:05:31 Speaker 1
Yeah, right. And and the most evil person in the world gave it to them, like, ohh, that can't end up end. Well, you know, this is a good idea. And then dark side and the demon are in the the aspect world, the anti life world. And they get their **** kicked.
01:05:48 Speaker 1
And and meanwhile, you know, four German Batman are fighting for their life and for the life of the Milky Way Galaxy.
01:05:56 Speaker 1
And everyone else is on new Genesis, having tea and arguing over. You know why Jon Stewart is a rotten person for having miscalculated and killed millions of people, you know, and everybody else is just like, wow.
01:06:08 Speaker 1
Well, you know, I know Batman is struggling, finding, you know, fighting this aspect. But you know, Earth is big. We can't even go there and and go look for him. So why bother? We'll just stay here where it's safe in case he fails.
01:06:25 Speaker 2
It's definitely not taken into account the snowball effect.
01:06:29 Speaker 2
Love like OK, you.
01:06:31 Speaker 2
Guys have done your job, but we can resend you guys out. Superman, Martian, man and all you guys. You you know.
01:06:37 Speaker 2
Jon Stewart is in mourning or.
01:06:41 Speaker 2
You know, second guessing his abilities.
01:06:43 Speaker 2
Yeah, like to your point, they're just.
01:06:45 Speaker 2
Kind of loafing around, just kicking back.
01:06:48 Speaker 1
Yeah, there's there's nothing we can do really.
01:06:51 Speaker 2
Yeah, guys are all really descending most.
01:06:52 Speaker 2
Part of.
01:06:56 Speaker 2
All the time.
01:06:58 Speaker 2
Is the one that still has.
01:07:00 Speaker 2
An aspect of it you want to go.
01:07:03 Speaker 2
And see if you can.
01:07:04 Speaker 2
Do anything give it.
01:07:05 Speaker 2
A little bit of help.
01:07:07 Speaker 1
Nah, we did our part, right? We didn't get a pay phone call or anything like that. So Speaking of pay phone, Doctor Fate shows up. Yeah. Finally. Doctor Fate shows up at the last.
01:07:18 Speaker 1
Issue, I mean he he was roaming around earlier, but of course Dr. He's one of my favorite characters, so I appreciated mignola's art style on him. He didn't do a whole lot.
01:07:29 Speaker 1
I mean, he did.
01:07:31 Speaker 1
He was like the, you know, the S mark and uh, kind of, hey, I'm going to, I'm going to solve all your problems cause I showed up because Batman gave me a call and luckily, luckily I'm here because you wouldn't have. You wouldn't have defeated this guy otherwise.
01:07:45 Speaker 2
Overline and go into the.
01:07:48 Speaker 2
Star Wars parlance.
01:07:49 Speaker 2
He felt a.
01:07:51 Speaker 2
Disturbance in the forest planet blowing up. They seen their planet growing up.
01:07:56 Speaker 2
That was before you know.
01:07:58 Speaker 2
The basic sorceress of cream of the DC Universe didn't notice a planet or some sort of disturbance of like oh crap, these anti.
01:08:09 Speaker 2
Life equation? Nope, didn't.
01:08:11 Speaker 2
Since at all it took a phone call.
01:08:14 Speaker 2
To bring them to.
01:08:16 Speaker 2
And awareness of what's going.
01:08:18 Speaker 2
And it's like, so not that cosmic of it being like.
01:08:24 Speaker 2
The traditional term of cosmic awareness.
01:08:27 Speaker 1
Yeah, his helmet was out of juice. He had it plugged in so.
01:08:32 Speaker 2
Yeah, exactly.
01:08:34 Speaker 2
He's using it as a night.
01:08:35 Speaker 2
Light and it just drained it and.
01:08:39 Speaker 2
The use of the the characters to kind of create.
01:08:44 Speaker 2
This like 5 pointed star of power.
01:08:48 Speaker 2
That seemed a little contrived.
01:08:50 Speaker 1
Yeah, just no, not a little. It seemed a lot contrived, and then when he's describing, you know, I'm I'm using the power of High Father and Orion because they're connected to the source and, you know, dark sides connected to the anti life equation and the demon who you know.
01:09:06 Speaker 1
I have. He has all the magical sorcerer things that I don't.
01:09:10 Speaker 1
And and it's like, OK, sure. Where did that come from? I mean, it's true, but you know, there was no foreshadowing of all this. All this super energy that he had to use on the pentagram to fight the aspect, you know?
01:09:30 Speaker 2
Yeah. And the arrangement of the.
01:09:32 Speaker 2
Characters also seems a little weird because.
01:09:35 Speaker 2
Like I would.
01:09:35 Speaker 2
Have put you know dark side.
01:09:37 Speaker 2
And, you know, high father on opposite sides like they're equals because that's kind of what they are in the in the DC.
01:09:45 Speaker 2
And then put the other two subordinate type characters below. You know kind of like, you know, like it just seems like.
01:09:54 Speaker 2
Orion was like the biggest stretch.
01:09:59 Speaker 2
I don't think he's got any sort.
01:10:00 Speaker 2
Of mystical abilities other than being like.
01:10:02
The son of.
01:10:04 Speaker 1
Yeah, he's just a jerk.
01:10:06 Speaker 2
Like, OK, yeah, we're tapping into your mugging ability.
01:10:12 Speaker 1
Right.
01:10:13 Speaker 1
Yeah, I agree with the high Fowler. He should have been on the other side I.
01:10:16 Speaker 1
Almost. I mean, I wish.
01:10:19 Speaker 1
DC would give High father the opposite power of dark side like dark side would be one side and high father. I don't think he's as powerful.
01:10:29 Speaker 1
I really don't know the power level of high father, but I don't think he's even close to dark side, so I'm not sure they use him the way they should.
01:10:38 Speaker 2
Yeah. And that's for the best. I mean, you kind of want.
01:10:41 Speaker 2
Your villains to.
01:10:42 Speaker 2
Be really a threat if they're not, are with you, then it's like the Doctor Doom stories are.
01:10:54 Speaker 2
Is seen as being.
01:10:56 Speaker 2
You know, he's got a whole country at his disposal. He can really unleash the things.
01:11:03 Speaker 2
That he wanted to. And then.
01:11:04 Speaker 2
It's intellectual. Intellectually, he's more, you know, he's probably as smart as not, you know, in his own way.
01:11:13 Speaker 2
Smarter than Reed Richards and then the same would you know, he's he's got some mystical abilities. So not only is he got the technological know how he's admissible, but.
01:11:22 Speaker 2
His holy crap.
01:11:23 Speaker 2
He really becomes a threat.
01:11:25 Speaker 2
But if you're going to say that, yeah.
01:11:27 Speaker 2
He's basically on par with this guy.
01:11:29 Speaker 2
Like kind of takes.
01:11:31 Speaker 2
Him down a.
01:11:31 Speaker 2
Notch so having the dark side being.
01:11:34 Speaker 3
A lot more colorful.
01:11:36 Speaker 2
Then High Father gives it a little bit more.
01:11:39 Speaker 2
Important. Yeah, they don't really tap into any of the.
01:11:44 Speaker 2
Things like dark side just.
01:11:45 Speaker 2
Makes the gadgets in this whole series.
01:11:49 Speaker 2
He did punch Superman and cinnamon flying.
01:11:52 Speaker 2
In the first issue.
01:11:53 Speaker 1
Ohh yeah.
01:11:54 Speaker 2
Yeah, but beyond that.
01:11:56 Speaker 2
He just is like you from James Bond, just making gadgets, making something's going to open up the rift between our world and the life world. And I'm going to make these little flashlights where you can suck.
01:12:08 Speaker 3
Up the anti.
01:12:09 Speaker 2
Lights, equation aspects and I'm going to.
01:12:11 Speaker 2
Make a another gizmo to.
01:12:14 Speaker 2
Transport you guys and.
01:12:15
It just seems like.
01:12:17 Speaker 2
You just like gadgets. You're not really much in the way of your own power. Like, where is his Omega beams?
01:12:23 Speaker 2
Where is his, you know?
01:12:25
It's kind of.
01:12:28 Speaker 1
He saves his energy for fighting the aspect. That's what it is. But he fights the aspect. Fate kind of saves the day and they all go back to New Genesis. All happy.
01:12:40 Speaker 1
Except the fights still going on on Earth, and they're just like whatever we're going to have a party over here. And Batman and Forager fight and and and and the the the fight continues. It's really cool forger sacrifices himself and he dies saving the universe.
01:13:01 Speaker 2
Again, you know, so the consequence, you know, you know, a red shirt blowing or a red shirt planet blowing up didn't have the.
01:13:10 Speaker 2
Impact. But having that character.
01:13:15 Speaker 2
You know, die actually had.
01:13:18 Speaker 2
They they spent two issues.
01:13:20
Trying to build.
01:13:21 Speaker 2
The character up.
01:13:22
Oh God, I.
01:13:24 Speaker 2
Think he still doesn't know his sacrifice him.
01:13:29 Speaker 1
Yeah, it was the one character I thought they did really well.
01:13:32 Speaker 1
And you wanted to see more of and so, of course they kill him, which is kind of what you want. You want to feel the loss, like you said.
01:13:40 Speaker 2
There's a consequence.
01:13:41 Speaker 2
To this whole thing. You know, there wasn't a way for.
01:13:45 Speaker 2
Them all to kind of.
01:13:48 Speaker 2
You know something? It could have gone smoothly for.
01:13:52 Speaker 1
And then it cuts to Jon Stewart. And here's my other gripe of this issue.
01:13:58 Speaker 1
He's he's he's.
01:13:59 Speaker 1
Obviously distraught, he's just killed a billion people because of his mistake. So he sends his Green Lantern ring off into space.
01:14:08 Speaker 1
But before he does that, he uses the Green Lantern ring to grab a yellow gun.
01:14:14 Speaker 1
Up the shelf, but his but his ring can't handle yellow. He shouldn't be able to grab it right? Or am I misunderstanding how that works like he couldn't stop the yellow bomb, so why can he grab a yellow gun? But I I guess I mean it. It's saying he's going to use a yellow gun because apparently the Green Lantern ring.
01:14:34 Speaker 1
Wouldn't save them then cause the blast is going to be yellow too, cause of course the guns yellow. So of course the blast should be yellow too, right? Is that the logic behind that?
01:14:43 Speaker 2
Whatever color your gun is.
01:14:45 Speaker 2
And the color of the rake.
01:14:47 Speaker 1
Right. But he doesn't do it.
01:14:50 Speaker 2
Again, another keeper. Is this the right use of Martian Manhunters abilities? Martian man hunter being just a Jack of all trades with a random assortment of powers, one of them being mind reading. He had just simply read John Stuart's mind and found that he was second guessing his suicidal tendency.
01:15:10 Speaker 2
Here and realize that.
01:15:12 Speaker 2
OK.
01:15:14 Speaker 2
Yeah, he wasn't going.
01:15:15 Speaker 2
To counsel up, after all, and.
01:15:16 Speaker 2
Walked away, but this whole like.
01:15:19 Speaker 2
Well, are you going to?
01:15:19 Speaker 2
Do it trying to push.
01:15:21 Speaker 2
Him and it's like.
01:15:22 Speaker 1
Should have said. Say it again, John. Maybe next time I'll believe it.
01:15:29 Speaker 2
And what the other thing was like, I'm going to send my ring.
01:15:33 Speaker 2
You know all.
01:15:33 Speaker 2
The way to the other side of the universe, 28 years, that would be far enough. You know, he sees it all out and panel after panel after panel.
01:15:44 Speaker 2
And get really contemplating. So he sent.
01:15:46 Speaker 2
The thing 20 light years.
01:15:49 Speaker 2
And then the moment, he says ring.
01:15:52 Speaker 1
Right, it's that fast.
01:15:54 Speaker 2
That fast? It was like it was that fast. It's literally him saying ring. It's right there.
01:16:01 Speaker 2
Apparently sending I think 20 light years out.
01:16:06 Speaker 2
Was not apparently far enough, but this is the same guy who was able to use the same ring to generate an anti.
01:16:14 Speaker 2
Pandemic serum using that.
01:16:19 Speaker 1
And save marshy man, Hunter and him from a Galaxy destroying explosion, that ring is powerful.
01:16:26 Speaker 2
Yeah. So apparently, you know, if he.
01:16:29 Speaker 2
Knew what to do all this.
01:16:31 Speaker 2
Why didn't he?
01:16:34 Speaker 2
You know like 9.
01:16:36 Speaker 2
Million light years away and then that would have that would have been enough.
01:16:42 Speaker 2
But apparently 20 light years is not. That's like a second.
01:16:47 Speaker 2
So clearly the entire time was not.
01:16:49 Speaker 2
Participating in using this.
01:16:51 Speaker 1
So the universe is saved, dark side is semi defeated because he didn't get all the aspects powers and only a billion people died and not 20 billion.
01:17:05 Speaker 3
Yeah, but there's a couple of.
01:17:09 Speaker 2
Plot holes, but I still don't forget something that obviously.
01:17:13 Speaker 2
They were intending to use for future story books for.
01:17:17 Speaker 2
These characters on the.
01:17:18 Speaker 2
Road one of.
01:17:19 Speaker 2
Them being the dark side made off with the one or two, but the only one that had captured an aspect in the flashlight.
01:17:30 Speaker 1
True, yeah.
01:17:31
You made-up with.
01:17:32 Speaker 2
That I was like, OK, so he was going.
01:17:35 Speaker 2
To do the other thing is.
01:17:37 Speaker 2
The aspect made a run for it on ran.
01:17:41 Speaker 2
But they never come.
01:17:41 Speaker 2
Back or explain like if you're making a bomb on another planet because that's the same aspect, and that's what the aspect does is make bombs.
01:17:49 Speaker 2
And that one took off and they never caught.
01:17:53 Speaker 1
Well, it shows. It shows up again later in either that same issue or the next one when they are page back for it, but it like when dark side and the demon are in the other universe.
01:18:08 Speaker 1
The the aspect.
01:18:11 Speaker 1
Or is it issue 4?
01:18:12 Speaker 2
Yeah, I see it's on page.
01:18:15 Speaker 1
Yeah, it shows up again as a.
01:18:18 Speaker 4
OK. Yep, you're by the.
01:18:20 Speaker 3
Stars. It's one of the intelligent.
01:18:24 Speaker 1
Yeah. So apparently that covered that aspect, no pun intended.
01:18:29 Speaker 2
You know, because to me, I was looking at that, not necessarily that.
01:18:35 Speaker 2
Because I was.
01:18:36 Speaker 2
Looking at it as being like he.
01:18:38 Speaker 2
Shout it out because.
01:18:40 Speaker 2
Like if you look at the top of that page.
01:18:42 Speaker 2
There's the anti like aspect itself and.
01:18:45 Speaker 2
Made the little like.
01:18:48 Speaker 2
Glowing dot praying. He's what looks like a hand and was sending that tendril.
01:18:53 Speaker 2
Out to chase dark side.
01:18:57 Speaker 2
Follow them from the anti life world.
01:18:59 Speaker 2
Into these other universes. So I was looking at as if that was the anti life equation.
01:19:04
Being sending yet.
01:19:06 Speaker 2
Another aspect.
01:19:09 Speaker 2
We get that way as opposed to it being like uh oh.
01:19:14 Speaker 2
You know, here's this one, but.
01:19:17 Speaker 2
Now that you mentioned it, I can see that.
01:19:20 Speaker 2
It was like there's one coming from one side.
01:19:23 Speaker 2
And another coming from the other side and that's how.
01:19:26 Speaker 1
Yeah, I didn't catch that. The guy was a robot, but I did catch that the aspect on one little panel shows back up again.
01:19:36 Speaker 1
Yes, that's right. And This is why I love comics is cause, you know, you can catch all.
01:19:43 Speaker 1
This stuff right?
01:19:44 Speaker 2
Yeah, yeah. I mean it's like we age and the reason why we age.
01:19:48 Speaker 2
Is so that we can understand.
01:19:49 Speaker 2
These little subtleties.
01:19:52 Speaker 1
Right. So overall feeling on this series cosmic odyssey for issues?
01:19:59 Speaker 2
Yeah, kind of show the bill of goods.
01:20:02 Speaker 2
When it comes to cosmic and the Odyssey.
01:20:05 Speaker 2
But the artwork is still, I mean from the coloring to the inking, to the art itself and the illustration still phenomenal.
01:20:20 Speaker 2
It it's an entertaining.
01:20:22 Speaker 2
Story, but not one that was like cosmic, where I felt like this.
01:20:29 Speaker 2
The pillars of heaven.
01:20:31
It just is.
01:20:31 Speaker 2
Like, yeah.
01:20:33 Speaker 2
Yep, bad things were about to happen. The good guys stopped it from happening.
01:20:37 Speaker 2
And it had no lingering.
01:20:39 Speaker 2
Effects in the decent.
01:20:42 Speaker 1
Right. Other than Jon Stewart, I don't recall anything ever affecting anybody ever again from this series. But I totally agree with you that visually, this book is wonderful. Holds up like this is a reread for both of us from from it. And while the story.
01:21:01 Speaker 1
Certainly isn't the greatest, and if you just ignore the plot holes, it's entertaining. But the art is just gorgeous, and it's well worth looking at, even if you don't read it.
01:21:14 Speaker 2
And you know there is.
01:21:15 Speaker 2
Still, a lot. You know that it.
01:21:19 Speaker 2
A lot of different ways and but like it's an earlier, it feels as if this is really strong attempt to try to bring the new gods back into the limelight. For DC Comics, they did. They had that follow up series of New Gods series. Did Jim Starlin write?
01:21:38 Speaker 2
That series as.
01:21:39 Speaker 2
Well, but with Paris Collins or Collins, I think through there.
01:21:43 Speaker 1
I think it was Collins, but I'm not sure if Starling actually wrote. I'm I'm not sure. I think it was. I'm pulling this Dave, Evan near or something like that. I think he did some of it, but I didn't look it up or anything like that so.
01:21:57 Speaker 1
I may be totally wrong in that.
01:21:59 Speaker 2
So yeah, just there was just a lot.
01:22:02 Speaker 2
Of things where it worked and a lot.
01:22:05 Speaker 2
Of things that just were like.
01:22:07 Speaker 2
It could have.
01:22:07 Speaker 2
Been better.
01:22:09 Speaker 2
Would have been.
01:22:09 Speaker 2
Nice. And it's it's tough to work on a huge multi.
01:22:12 Speaker 2
Team like you know your point. You're making earlier with.
01:22:18 Speaker 2
You know, crisis, you know that involved every character throughout the entire DC universe.
01:22:25 Speaker 2
You know, and that was a massive undertaking.
01:22:28 Speaker 2
And it's tough to kind of.
01:22:30 Speaker 2
Keep a tight woven story. You have that.
01:22:33 Speaker 2
Many carries, so you kind of.
01:22:34 Speaker 2
Have to picking shoes but.
01:22:36 Speaker 2
When they did pick and choose, these were the characters of the.
01:22:41 Speaker 1
Right.
01:22:42 Speaker 2
Hal Jordan versus Johnston.
01:22:45 Speaker 1
Yeah, I don't mind. I don't mind. Jon Stewart. He's actually one of my favorite green lanterns. I mean, I love how.
01:22:51 Speaker 1
I love Hal, but.
01:22:53 Speaker 1
Jon Stewart was fine. I'm not sure about Starfire and.
01:22:58 Speaker 2
And then you know the worst is the fact that Metron, they kind of left that character linger. Basically Stephen Hawkins style. You know where he's.
01:23:10 Speaker 2
You know comatose or catatonic in his chair.
01:23:16 Speaker 1
Yeah, he doesn't show up again, does he? He's.
01:23:19 Speaker 2
They just kind of left.
01:23:20 Speaker 2
Him where he was at but.
01:23:24 Speaker 1
I'm not sure what you can do with the character that's supposed to know everything.
01:23:28 Speaker 1
Other than have him be in a coma after finding out too much of something, you know there's just. There's only so much characterization you can do that it's probably a frequent characterization of him where he just overwhelmed and.
01:23:41 Speaker 1
And and warns the heroes to be on the lookout and then passes out or something.
01:23:46 Speaker 3
And that that gives you that false sense.
01:23:48 Speaker 2
Of like holy crap this is.
01:23:50 Speaker 2
Going to be huge, but it overwhelmed.
01:23:53 Speaker 1
Him. Yeah. I'm. I'm curious what Jack Kirby did with him. I'm gonna have to. I'm gonna have to do some research on the new guides, but and that's our review for cosmic odyssey, the four issue miniseries are, Are you ready for some cosmic?
01:24:06 Speaker 1
Got to see trivia. Let's go to that next segment. Well, we'll see whose questions are Dumber.
01:24:14 Speaker 1
And there'll be some like intro music did it.
01:24:18 Speaker 1
Something like that, or just that. Yeah. Yeah, but I I don't know how you want to do this. I have. I have six questions for you on cosmic odyssey trivia.
01:24:29 Speaker 2
You know, kind of.
01:24:31 Speaker 2
Scatter my dumb ideas.
01:24:33 Speaker 1
Great. Maybe we'll even have the same question. OK, my first question.
01:24:39 Speaker 1
For cosmic odyssey.
01:24:41 Speaker 1
What is Starfires real name?
01:24:45 Speaker 2
Man, hey, we.
01:24:46 Speaker 2
Did discuss that one. Apparently she only has if you by reading this book alone, only one part of.
01:24:56 Speaker 1
That is partial. I mean, I'll give you a partial credit because that is the only thing you could have picked up from this series. But her last name.
01:25:05 Speaker 1
Which is of course not real because she's a.
01:25:08 Speaker 1
Her name is Cory Anders, so Corey Anders and I think now they think about it, that is her real name on Tamaran or wherever she's from.
01:25:20 Speaker 1
And they just kind of split in half and that's and that's my question one.
01:25:27 Speaker 2
Mine for you. I'll start off with the worst of them all. Ready.
01:25:34 Speaker 2
What kind of?
01:25:35 Speaker 2
Job would you like?
01:25:37 Speaker 2
To have on fangar that would cause you.
01:25:39 Speaker 2
To have the least amount of work to do.
01:25:43 Speaker 1
Well, it wouldn't be wing repair or anth metal, you know? Fixer, it wouldn't. Wouldn't be that job. I would like to at least have.
01:25:56 Speaker 1
Ohh, most have well, it also wouldn't be a funeral.
01:26:04 Speaker 1
Because there's a lot of dead people there. Uhm, that's a great question and I I'm drawing a blank on what job would be the least I'm thinking of all the ones that wouldn't.
01:26:19 Speaker 2
Had written down Fashionista.
01:26:22 Speaker 1
That's true because there is only one design.
01:26:28 Speaker 1
Right that.
01:26:30 Speaker 2
Then it's like.
01:26:31 Speaker 2
Ohh, what are you wearing this summer? Oh.
01:26:33 Speaker 2
The same thing we all are wearing.
01:26:39 Speaker 2
Exactly. Again, you wear the same outfit I wore.
01:26:45 Speaker 1
OK, you got me on that one. Alright. You got a .5 point and I have zero. OK, here's my number two question. Name four other.
01:26:56 Speaker 1
Earth green lanterns?
01:26:58 Speaker 1
Besides Jon Stewart.
01:27:01 Speaker 2
I I'm going to be the ones that.
01:27:03 Speaker 2
I couldn't answer.
01:27:05 Speaker 2
How Jordan?
01:27:06 Speaker 1
OK.
01:27:08 Speaker 2
Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner because I brought him up earlier.
01:27:14 Speaker 1
Yep, you only need one more and I cheated because the only other one I can think of was introduced recently.
01:27:24 Speaker 2
Yeah, because I.
01:27:25 Speaker 2
Know that there's like some girl that is not.
01:27:30 Speaker 2
Got that dopey haircut where it's like, shaved on the side of the.
01:27:33 Speaker 2
Head. But she's on her.
01:27:35 Speaker 1
She is from Earth.
01:27:38 Speaker 2
So there's that.
01:27:38 Speaker 3
Girl. But then.
01:27:40 Speaker 2
Oh, oh, Ellen Scott.
01:27:44 Speaker 1
You're right that is another one well done. I didn't. I didn't think you'd get Alan Scott.
01:27:49 Speaker 2
Yeah, I just figured out. Like the Silver Age on green Lanterns and was like, oh, wait, yeah, that's the Golden Age.
01:27:57 Speaker 2
So kind of like.
01:27:58 Speaker 2
Saved by somebody that was completely not really a Green Lantern, but.
01:28:04 Speaker 2
Had a weakness to wood appeared.
01:28:06 Speaker 1
Correct. I would. I would also accept Jessica Cruz.
01:28:13 Speaker 2
Isn't there like a new black guy that is a Green Lantern that's got?
01:28:16 Speaker 2
Kind of the.
01:28:18 Speaker 2
Like he wears a mask over his face.
01:28:21 Speaker 1
Yeah, there's Simon Baz.
01:28:25 Speaker 1
I'm. I'm not positive he's an Earthman, earthling.
01:28:30 Speaker 1
But I don't know.
01:28:33
And what is that?
01:28:34 Speaker 2
Girl from like Jade or something?
01:28:36 Speaker 2
Like that from Infinity.
01:28:38 Speaker 1
Yeah, that's Alan Scott's daughter. Not technically a Green Lantern, although I think she did have a ring one time. She her power is natural. She has a birthmark on her finger and it's energized with emerald energy.
01:28:54 Speaker 1
Sorry I couldn't say that with a straight face.
01:28:56 Speaker 2
Yeah, it's like we're not infringing on one of our own characters, but.
01:29:00 Speaker 2
They're getting really close.
01:29:04 Speaker 2
OK. Next question for.
01:29:05 Speaker 2
You what is the name of the city that they all arrive at when the earth of people?
01:29:16 Speaker 2
Make it to new chemists.
01:29:19 Speaker 1
The city on New Genesis and I'm trying not to look. I thought it was just new. Genesis is it? Is it not? Because that's the city you're talking about, right?
01:29:27 Speaker 3
As well.
01:29:33 Speaker 1
OK.
01:29:34 Speaker 1
OK.
01:29:36
The name of the.
01:29:37 Speaker 1
That's a good question. I don't know that's a great question.
01:29:44 Speaker 1
Ohh yeah, it is Super Town, isn't it? Turn it classic.
01:29:50 Speaker 2
Kirby it's like.
01:29:51 Speaker 2
You have this cosmic I mean legitimately.
01:29:55 Speaker 2
These you.
01:29:55 Speaker 2
Know far-flung concepts these lofty ideals, these amazing characters light.
01:30:03 Speaker 2
Ray Ryan. Hi, father.
01:30:10 Speaker 1
Yeah. Once you said that, it's like, oh, yeah, that's what it.
01:30:13 Speaker 1
Is but.
01:30:14 Speaker 1
Good question.
01:30:16 Speaker 1
All right, question 3.
01:30:19 Speaker 1
Adam Strange travels back and forth to Ron, using what?
01:30:25
OK.
01:30:28 Speaker 2
Like a mega ray or something like that, or a mega beam or.
01:30:32 Speaker 1
It is a beam beam close. It's the Zeta beam.
01:30:33 Speaker 3
Beta mean?
01:30:38 Speaker 2
I've gone through my entire grief out.
01:30:40 Speaker 1
Right. You would get eventually Greek alphabet gamma beam.
01:30:45 Speaker 2
OK, so I don't know how we're faring as far as.
01:30:52 Speaker 1
You're doing better than me.
01:30:55 Speaker 2
Hi Tyler talks about the origins of the anti electric.
01:31:02 Speaker 2
And that there were.
01:31:03 Speaker 2
Two basic two species that predated.
01:31:07 Speaker 2
New Genesis and Apocalypse.
01:31:09 Speaker 2
What was the name of those species?
01:31:11 Speaker 1
I'm thinking.
01:31:15 Speaker 1
The good guys and the bad guys.
01:31:19 Speaker 2
You probably I'll have to give it to you.
01:31:21 Speaker 2
That was a trick question they never named.
01:31:25 Speaker 1
They were the the good people.
01:31:29
OK.
01:31:31 Speaker 2
And it's like, you know, one was legitimately looking.
01:31:35 Speaker 2
Back at this copy it just.
01:31:36 Speaker 2
Says the ancient record of that the civilization finally became contact with.
01:31:41 Speaker 2
The non human alien rights.
01:31:46 Speaker 1
It was the descendants of New Genesis and the descendants of Apocalypse.
01:31:50 Speaker 2
Yeah, it was basically that wasn't, you know, they blew up the planet and and out of that planet formed the Genesis and Apocalypse. But after eons later. But the the precursor.
01:32:10 Speaker 2
You wanna like race in and non human like race? No names.
01:32:13 Speaker 2
Do you want to think about it that?
01:32:14 Speaker 2
Much. And so they just.
01:32:16 Speaker 2
Didn't pick names.
01:32:19 Speaker 1
All right, that was your trick question. Here's my question 4.
01:32:24 Speaker 1
How many times does Orion get punched out by fellow heroes and by who?
01:32:32 Speaker 2
Oh man, I'm going.
01:32:35 Speaker 3
To go out and say twice.
01:32:37 Speaker 2
They know that Superman punches him.
01:32:40 Speaker 2
He says.
01:32:41 Speaker 2
Wrong and then?
01:32:43 Speaker 2
Batman punches him.
01:32:46 Speaker 2
When Orion discounts the death and sacrifice of.
01:32:50 Speaker 1
You are correct twice.
01:32:55 Speaker 1
Nobody likes Orion. He gets punched out by earthlings all the time.
01:33:01 Speaker 2
OK, that was.
01:33:03 Speaker 2
The what I would say I kind of ruined.
01:33:06 Speaker 2
One of them, but.
01:33:08 Speaker 1
But you ruined one of.
01:33:08 Speaker 2
Them. Yeah. So I have this question, I'll ask the question.
01:33:12 Speaker 2
Because it's so.
01:33:14 Speaker 1
I'll still get it wrong.
01:33:18 Speaker 2
How how did forager?
01:33:22 Speaker 2
When he defeated.
01:33:23 Speaker 2
The the police officer. What was the big revelation?
01:33:27 Speaker 1
His shield was vibranium.
01:33:32 Speaker 1
No, that oh, that's wrong universe. Well, had you not said anything, I wouldn't know the answer to this, but he was a freaking robot with a human brain.
01:33:49 Speaker 2
Yeah, he's the robot.
01:33:51 Speaker 2
Why? No idea. And the the fact that the robot that the entire life equation made that pot Superman was very distinctly different than the robot that they.
01:34:06 Speaker 3
Yet all the bombs were.
01:34:08 Speaker 1
Right. OK, good question, #5.
01:34:14 Speaker 1
How many females were in the core group of heroes?
01:34:21 Speaker 2
This is the token question boy, yeah.
01:34:28 Speaker 2
With the wrong typeface, Corey and I would.
01:34:31 Speaker 2
Say that's probably.
01:34:32 Speaker 2
Just the singular female.
01:34:34 Speaker 1
You're right. For some reason Jim Starlin chose Starfire as the only female in the group.
01:34:42 Speaker 2
Yeah, all all the female characters.
01:34:45 Speaker 2
That they have even our new Genesis has female.
01:34:47 Speaker 1
Right.
01:34:49 Speaker 2
What's the name of Granny Goodness's like army like?
01:34:54 Speaker 1
That female furies. It's in the name. Female furies. That alliteration. That that Kirby alliteration.
01:35:03 Speaker 1
That he got from Stan Lee.
01:35:07 Speaker 2
The Peter Parkers the Reed Richards.
01:35:11 Speaker 2
The question I had how many?
01:35:15 Speaker 3
Aspects were actually captured during this entire.
01:35:20
Formally released.
01:35:22 Speaker 3
Into the.
01:35:24 Speaker 2
Or our universe, so to speak. How many were actually captured?
01:35:28 Speaker 1
That's a great question. Only half only half were captured, I think because the one succeeded. So he was never captured.
01:35:38 Speaker 1
And then the one that smelled the petroleum wait, was that the petroleum one did. It didn't get captured. So yeah, half 50% success rate on the on the heroes part.
01:35:52 Speaker 2
I actually have it. There's.
01:35:54 Speaker 2
Only one got captured.
01:35:55 Speaker 1
Oh man.
01:35:57 Speaker 2
Because if you look at it.
01:36:00 Speaker 3
You know they captured theirs with their the gun.
01:36:05 Speaker 2
Light ray and Corey, that one escaped.
01:36:08 Speaker 2
And as you noted.
01:36:10 Speaker 2
It it went back to.
01:36:13 Speaker 2
The font dark side in the in between world.
01:36:18 Speaker 3
And then.
01:36:20 Speaker 3
The one that.
01:36:21 Speaker 2
Did succeed. Obviously that one went away.
01:36:24 Speaker 2
And the one.
01:36:25 Speaker 2
That they fought with Batman and Forager.
01:36:31 Speaker 2
The gun, just like you said, had been destroyed.
01:36:35 Speaker 2
So they couldn't capture that one because the gun is already gone, but they defeated it somehow.
01:36:43 Speaker 1
That's true. So it could be making a bomb right now somewhere else. Big plot hole too.
01:36:48 Speaker 2
One oddly.
01:36:49 Speaker 2
Not on the Earth still out there.
01:36:52 Speaker 1
That's right. That explains the rest of the DC Universe and what's happened to it since then because.
01:36:58 Speaker 3
It's actually became Doctor Manhattan.
01:37:02 Speaker 1
Right. Yeah, 6.
01:37:05 Speaker 1
It's the last one. It's the hardest question I could think of.
01:37:10 Speaker 1
To contact Doctor Fate, Batman used a what?
01:37:16 Speaker 2
The Yellow Pages apparently yes, he.
01:37:19 Speaker 1
He called Salem.
01:37:20 Speaker 2
Call the. Yeah, call the a tower that has no windows or door. Yet Central has a phone line going into.
01:37:31 Speaker 1
In 1988, what do you think of payphone cost?
01:37:35 Speaker 2
My gosh, yeah, I think.
01:37:36 Speaker 2
At that time, I think it was like $0.20.
01:37:38 Speaker 1
Yeah, it's pretty.
01:37:40 Speaker 2
Dropped two quarter or two.
01:37:41 Speaker 2
Dimes in there and you are good to go.
01:37:44 Speaker 1
I think you're right, it's probably close to that.
01:37:46 Speaker 1
All right. What's your last question?
01:37:49 Speaker 2
Yeah, I gave it away earlier, but I will ask it and see if this is more of a touch.
01:37:54 Speaker 2
Of your memory than anything else.
01:37:55 Speaker 1
Dang it, what obscure?
01:37:59 Speaker 2
Catch phrase does Superman say?
01:38:02 Speaker 1
And it's not great Caesar's ghost, right? What about say it again, Sam? Maybe next time. I'll believe it.
01:38:08 Speaker 4
Say it again, Sam. Say it isn't my fault. Maybe the second time I'll be leaving.
01:38:15 Speaker 1
But it was something Gracie. See, I was going to say Goodnight, Gracie. So that would have been wrong. See, that's that's my memory. But I am 50. So I mean, give me, give me that at least. Good night, Gracie. See, I didn't even remember. And I just read it.
01:38:32 Speaker 2
It just seemed like.
01:38:35 Speaker 2
He wouldn't ever say that.
01:38:37
I don't.
01:38:38 Speaker 2
Yeah, I know. Like.
01:38:39 Speaker 2
If they were actually.
01:38:40 Speaker 2
Raised in Kansas so you know entertainments, whatever you can get to.
01:38:46 Speaker 2
For you to actually say they could agree.
01:38:48 Speaker 2
It seemed like.
01:38:50 Speaker 1
He watched a lot of TV Land or.
01:38:53 Speaker 2
Yeah. Yep, Yep. The George Burns and Gracie Allen show again. I kind of gave up quite a few of them away.
01:39:00 Speaker 2
I was retelling, you know, going back to these last three issues.
01:39:05 Speaker 2
And trying to figure it out.
01:39:07 Speaker 2
It seemed like.
01:39:08
That one was kind.
01:39:09 Speaker 2
Of like the last of them.
01:39:13 Speaker 2
Yes, that was.
01:39:15 Speaker 2
Thing he said, you know like.
01:39:16 Speaker 2
I said Batman seeing Eureka.
01:39:19 Speaker 2
And Superman saying say Goodnight, Gracie.
01:39:22 Speaker 2
Was pretty much.
01:39:24 Speaker 2
Kind of like didn't make the connection there.
01:39:26 Speaker 1
Well, that's our review of cosmic odyssey.
01:39:30 Speaker 2
Yeah. One last.
01:39:33 Speaker 2
Thing that was very confusing and I couldn't figure this out. So on the planet Red shirt they.
01:39:40 Speaker 2
You know, they feel the various life forms, various peoples there, especially after explodes, but they land, they see all the people with plague diseases, right, so there's that.
01:39:54 Speaker 2
Whole community.
01:39:57 Speaker 2
But they all kind of are dressed in kind of like rags. They almost look like shepherds. They're all in robes and the kitchen, kind of like buildings in the background. And just.
01:40:10 Speaker 2
You know that's Group One. The planet explodes.
01:40:15 Speaker 2
And as is exploding, then you see kind of like this one type.
01:40:20 Speaker 2
Of you know.
01:40:22 Speaker 2
Food as well as they kind of like are.
01:40:25 Speaker 3
All in furs.
01:40:26 Speaker 2
And they're higher up again, they have.
01:40:28 Speaker 2
Most have a nomadic.
01:40:31 Speaker 2
Clothing style.
01:40:33 Speaker 2
And you.
01:40:33 Speaker 2
Know they have braided hair and.
01:40:35 Speaker 2
So forth and.
01:40:36 Speaker 2
They just get vaporized.
01:40:37 Speaker 1
And and.
01:40:40 Speaker 2
Who the heck is?
01:40:41 Speaker 2
This dude in blue.
01:40:43 Speaker 2
Jeans next to the bomb that decided I'll just go.
01:40:46 Speaker 2
Ahead and paint it.
01:40:49 Speaker 1
Yeah. I was gonna ask you about that guy.
01:40:53 Speaker 2
He's got Earth style glasses.
01:40:56 Speaker 2
He's got just kind of a regular shirt.
01:40:59 Speaker 2
Jeans, spoons like you know.
01:41:02 Speaker 2
Those look like they might as.
01:41:03 Speaker 2
Well, be Chuck Taylors.
01:41:05 Speaker 2
And why did the need to have it painted yellow? Because they have just constructed.
01:41:13 Speaker 2
It in yellow.
01:41:16 Speaker 1
Well, yeah, I almost got the impression that that's Mike Mignola is smirking. But.
01:41:22 Speaker 2
Somebody like he threw himself like his **** and his own stories.
01:41:25 Speaker 1
Right.
01:41:27 Speaker 2
Yeah, that when I read it the first time.
01:41:31 Speaker 2
I'm like, who is this person?
01:41:34 Speaker 2
You know it's.
01:41:34 Speaker 2
Like did DC create a character called the painter?
01:41:37 Speaker 1
The yellow.
01:41:39 Speaker 2
Uses cosmic beam that just can paint anything in moments.
01:41:45 Speaker 2
And I don't know if there's just kind.
01:41:46 Speaker 2
Of a thing where it's like.
01:41:49 Speaker 2
You know, you know the the.
01:41:51
Thing new.
01:41:53 Speaker 3
That the green.
01:41:54 Speaker 2
Lantern had the.
01:41:56 Speaker 2
You know, weakness yellow.
01:41:58 Speaker 2
So they had.
01:41:59 Speaker 2
To quickly change to match its weakness.
01:42:03 Speaker 2
And that's where they paint.
01:42:06 Speaker 2
But with you, you know.
01:42:07 Speaker 2
Clearly the guys got a paint brush.
01:42:10 Speaker 2
And this buckets of paint down below.
01:42:14 Speaker 1
Yeah, spilling all over the floor, right?
01:42:17 Speaker 2
Making that up, I know the planet exploded, but still somebody.
01:42:23 Speaker 1
It's probably another robot.
01:42:26 Speaker 2
It could be remember the anti life.
01:42:29 Speaker 2
Equation can only use that power.
01:42:32 Speaker 1
Right. He no more human like robots. He's got this art artistic artist. Look to him. That's why I almost feel like he's.
01:42:40 Speaker 1
Jim Starlin or Minola, you know like placed in the scene with the smirk.
01:42:45 Speaker 2
But that, like it was like the one character that had.
01:42:49 Speaker 2
No connection to the aesthetic of the planet.
01:42:54 Speaker 2
So that that was just kind of like, I often wondered like.
01:42:58 Speaker 2
Why wouldn't you introduce a character just like that? Just for that moment? Just throw.
01:43:03 Speaker 2
That one frame and then.
01:43:08 Speaker 1
I think I think he's going to be in the sequel.
01:43:11 Speaker 2
So it may have been a new genesis.
01:43:13 Speaker 2
On the ferry to, you know, right through.
01:43:16 Speaker 1
Right.
01:43:17 Speaker 1
I think you're right. We should. We should name him and he should be a guest. And then in the next episode.
01:43:25 Speaker 2
When I heard something that's.
01:43:27 Speaker 2
Seriously happened. It was because of the yellow.
01:43:30 Speaker 3
I was like, oh.
01:43:30 Speaker 4
Well, you know.
01:43:32 Speaker 2
It was explained because there was a yellow painter that just showed up and made that that one thing happen.
01:43:39 Speaker 1
I think that's it.
01:43:41 Speaker 2
Yeah. So there's some mysteries. Some plot holes, but.
01:43:45 Speaker 2
Overall I mean.
01:43:46 Speaker 2
Story was told.
01:43:48 Speaker 1
Right.
01:43:49 Speaker 2
Overview seemed to be pretty straightforward. There was.
01:43:52 Speaker 2
A projector that just.
01:43:54 Speaker 2
You could see it coming.
01:43:57 Speaker 2
But yeah, there's.
01:43:58 Speaker 2
You know, it did leave some questions out there. Like, who does all the fashion work for Vanguard?
01:44:07 Speaker 2
And this mysterious painter and, and apparently that Alfred, you know, fine Butler, but even better, great old costumes.
01:44:20 Speaker 1
He we all have secret skills, and that's just Alfred's.
01:44:25 Speaker 2
I think he.
01:44:25 Speaker 2
Has actual superhuman powers and does more than Batman does.
01:44:31 Speaker 2
There's some works behind the scenes.
01:44:33 Speaker 1
It's probably true.
