And That's what you really missed with Jenna and Kevin and I Heart Radio Podcast. Welcome to and That's what you really missed. I'm Jennaschwitz, I'm Kevin McHale. Thank you so much for coming back for a third week in a row. Thanks to Ryan Murphy for an incredible two part opener to the launch of this podcast. Um, we're back here to chat about the pilot again. Are you
watching recapping before we do that? I just want to The response has been absolutely crazy, So thank you to everyone who's been downloading and listening and telling your friends about it. My family's even listening. Yeah, it's crazy. I'm We're super appreciative. This is more than we could have asked for coming back, and you know, um, we we're just super grateful. So so, um, should we should we talk pilot? Let's talk pilot? How many times have you
seen this pilot? Kevin, I don't want to talk about it. I guess that's what we're here to do. I've seen it so many, like probably over a hundred times. Yeah, and I have to say I was not looking forward to watching it again, not because I don't love it, just because we've so many times I'm also not a looper. I don't watch things a lot. Oh that's interesting. I am an absolute looper. Yes, okay, I'm not one of those people that's seen Friends you know times. I saw
it when it was on originally and haven't seen it since. Um. David and I have been watching National Treasure on the regular every night. Anyway, Okay, I digress. Let's do this. Um. This is season one, episode one, the pilot. Um. It's so freaking epic and it aired on nine after the American Idol finale. UM, let's chat about it. Tell me about the synops of this show, Kevin. Um. Okay, Well, we are introduced to everyone. Introduced to the glee club
that is sort of falling apart. Um. We're introduced to Will Schuster Um, a teacher, Spanish teacher with a good heart who wants to revive the glee club. We are introduced to Sue Sylvester and the Cheerios. Oh yes, the football team. We see that in Lime, Ohio Sports. Just like why Grip of Texas is number one, glee club is not important. They are the competitive teams at the school. But everything changes when the quarterback of the football team
joins the Glee Club. Wow wow wow wow. So um, just to kick off the preamble to shoot this pilot recap, Um, Corey couldn't get down because he was Canadian to rehearse with us in the weeks like leading up to filming this physically couldn't get across the border. Yeah, and so he would wait for a work visa. So Kevin, Me, Leah Amber and Chris we're all rehearsing a million different versions of Don't Stop Believing, and um, sit down, you're
rocking the boat. And there was this this actor was coming to play Finn, yeah, and who I instinctually hated because he played villain. Yeah. He played the villain on the show called kyle x Why back in the day, and I had just seen it and that's where I knew him from. And I was like, I'm not looking forward to Like he supposed to be the star of the show and super nice and we're supposed to get behind him. But he's mean and I'm not excited to
didn't know that. Yeah, But also like he's Canadian, so of course he was going to be the nicest person ever. But he felt like this like magical character that like nobody knew and we all were bonding, and we're like, what happens when Corey comes and what happens when we we've all bonded and we're all friends and this other guy comes in? But lo and behold it was also it was the four of us. It was you, Me, Amber, and Chris for weeks and none of us knew Leah
except you. And then yeah, and then we met Leah and then we started rehearsing with her, and then I don't know, two weeks or a week after that, then Corey came in. So it was a little one by one we all got together to form this little band of misfits. Now I'm thinking about this recap with Justin timber Now, I feel like we have to like bring bring in Justin and and and imagine him in the in this show now. I mean, I don't think it's such a like a stretch for people to imagine. I
just think it's funny. It is. It's weird also, like he wouldn't have had the time, like in what world I think, but I would have liked to know if we were on Justin timber Lake schedule, though we would have been working a lot less like Justin is not available, Glee Club can't work today. He just shoot all of those exposition scenes immediately. Okay, let's get into it. Yeah. I think there's also a billion songs in this episode, so there's there's a lot more than Yeah, there's a
lot to go over. But I will say, um that watching this episode, I feel like it holds up. It looks great. It's so cinematic and also something for normal teen shows because I grew up watching a lot of them and still watch a lot of them. They're they're not normally I think shot with this level of care
and attention. When Ryan was talking about that, like you know, the last episode of about his creative process, and I do think that's also besides the structure of the show and the music and the story, it's also I think how the show looked and was presented it was I mean, then when you come in there with a bang with Sue Sylvester talking about waterboarding in the first fifteen seconds of this show, Um, it's iconic. I mean that that
line became so iconic. But I think they recorded like or shot like many many many different versions that Ian Brennan kind of threw out at her um. Also to note we were one of the last shows to shoot on actual film. Yes, I think that's why it also looked so good on film for a while. Yeah, like three seasons, I think. Yeah, um, okay, Well, and we were introduced to the villain right immediately immediately. Also, can you imagine the show without her? It wouldn't it wouldn't
have worked. And also, just I forgot it opened like that for some reason. I thought it opened on Will Shuster's old car with like banged up car. Yeah, I forgot. It's that phenomenal cheerleading moment. That's right, that's right. Um. And then here we are with Mr Shu Um, justin Timberlake is here and um. And then this is the first of the kids. Kurt is thrown it into a dumpster. Yeah, it's something that Puck really likes to just throw us kids into dumpsters and porta potties. And but it's all
I think. Also like the introducing all these characters in such a definitive way where you get to know everyone immediately beyond the wardrobe. You get to know, Okay, this is who Kurt is, this is his relationship, this is who Sue is. Um. The only character that's sort of unfolding as it goes as Will and his intentions. You know, he's a good guy, but everything else is I think, such a great introduction to each of the characters. So Justin Gaston it is, wasn't Justin Gaston was the one
who he was one of the football players. He's a very good looking football player in the back only there for the pilot, right. And also I remember us like they were whisperings the whole time that he was dating Miley Cyrus. Well, yeah, I was sort of not star struck. Was like, what is he doing here? Because you know, I saw him in tabloids, like I saw him in paparazzi photos every single day updating Miley, and then he was there. There was a lot of that on the show.
But I didn't know Jane was cast on the show. None of us did. No, we literally bombed into her during the pilot, and I was like, I think we had also been talking about how much we loved Jane because I think they referenced her, like Ryan said, and we knew they referenced her, but we were, you know,
naive and ignorant to that. Oh no, No, they actually got the real thing, and we kind of we learned very much about Finn in this, like even like holding Kurt's jacket, you know, when he gets dumped into the dumpster. But did you notice that Um in the Spanish in the Spanish room, like Corey just like not being able to hold it together. I did. I feel like this
was the first time I caught that. I don't know why, but it was maybe because I haven't seen it so long, but it was the first time I saw him sort of like like when he tries not to laugh, like the sides of his eyes go up, like he tries to do this sort of like plastic surgery phase, you know. Yeah, and he's like trying to keep it together, and you could tell it was like they have to cut before
he completely it. Wow, there'll be a lot of that, and that that leads us to this is what I feel like was probably inspired by Ian's original script, where you have Sandy Ryerson, the outgoing glee club teacher, um placing an inappropriate hand on Ben blood cell. Yeah, and I feel like that must have been sort of the bridge of this guy's terrible and inappropriate Yes, the little remnants of the original script, Yes, Yes, totally and it so it is a good way and to get Will
into you know, heading up club. It's like it all worked. It was all transition. Also again just having another iconic comedic actor, um Steven Tabolowski, like like what throughout the
whole series. I just remember like when we didn't really work with him very much, and so his scenes would be shot with Jane or you know, Matt and Jayma and like, and then we'd see them in our and our viewings are lunchtime viewings of the episodes, and my job would dropped the ground because he was just so he was like Jane Lynch level of like comedic genius.
So they're very much counterparts to each other. They were. Yeah, it was it was exhausting being around them because I was like, I can't keep up with either of you. And then we we meet, we go into the teachers loue time, which is personally it was that's where we hung out a lot. Yes, we did between in the teacher's lounge. Yeah, we played games in there. It's always. Yeah,
that's where I introduced Mafia to everyone. It was close by the choir room, so we would leave when they would like the choir room and we go sit together and we were all loud, so it was far enough away where we wouldn't father the professionals. Um. Okay, so we meet can Tanaka here right, Um we see Sue again, and um, we learned that Sue is a horrible human being. Also maybe my favorite, one of my favorite lines of the entire episode. Irma, I'm going to take a phone er.
That's an interview on my phone. I do remember being somewhere around when they were shooting that and like hearing those lines and being like, Wow, she's really funny phenomenal also fun fact Like, there's also this running gag where Sue never calls Emma by her real name, but the scene that's right, she actually does say Emma. I mean it's one and done, right, she says Emma and then never to be seen. No Ellen Dye eleanor Amelia, Edna, Dina, Elma Elmo, Um i jama. I mean Emma is one
of my favorite characters. Um, she's just her outfits pop. She is like the epitome of like the Glee you know, colors and the bubble gum pop that Ryan was talking about. Um, and I think this is where we start to see like their little relationships start to bud right, and their
chemistry is so good. That's so cute together. I also think it's Jammys, who plays Emma, is also one of the most wonderful, hilarious people I've ever met, and so I think it's a combination of my love for her and also Emma is complained, like I don't know where one starts the other, one ends, one ends, the other one starts. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I hear that. I hear that. Um, so this is this is okay, so this is the catalyst. This is where Emma tells Will that the glee club,
you know, the glee teacher got fired. And Will's like, this is my chance to relive my high school glory and I am going to um head the glee club. And um this is also Figgins. Oh well sorry I'm jumping, but no, right, okay, yeah, he goes to Figgins and Veggins. Veggins was one of my favorite um it's like places to shoot. We also slept. I also slept on that couch a lot. But I feel like that is amazing
and he is just a wonderful, kind human being. But he was just so freaking funny, and like when you got to do scenes with him, it was the best because you didn't get to do them a lot. It really did feel like we were very much the kids, and the adults were very much the adults, even though some of us playing kids were a little closer to the teacher's ages. But when you went into the scenes with them, you're in scenes with these comedic powerhouses, every
single one of them. It's intimidating. It was very intimidating. It was very very hard to keep a straight face and actually be professional. But I was so scared all the time, and I didn't want to like upset Ryan Ian or Brad because everyone was so good and I felt like I tricked everyone hiring me. Yeah, absolutely, at least the entirety of the first season, Like and you don't realize that, like we're on each other, we're having fun.
It feels great and camaraderie and whatever, and all of a sudden you're in a scene with Jane Lynch and I don't know what, I forget it. It's like him and I heard my goal hedgecock and it's like we will also have on It's like I don't know, Okay, again, we're I'm diegrassing from it's what we do. Yes, that that is what we do. But we have to talk about the fact that, um that Will Schuster is naked. Should we guess how long? How long are we into this before his shirt is off? How much time technically
do you think it is? Do do? Do? Do? Do? I mean? I think four minutes? Do you think it's that quick? Mm hm? I yeah, I feel like I would have to say it's I think it's a little longer. I think it's maybe like twelve Are we twelve minutes into this? Can we get a check time check, time, check,
and somebody check when under five minutes? You know? And this is what feeds the fuel of all the YouTube videos of Schuster cringing moments, ugly in a bath, shirtless shoe, shirtless shoe, Yes we have the teacher is shirtless and under five minutes. Welcome to Glee, everyone, Welcome to Glee. Um okay, I also to talk about the name of
our gly club because Mr Schuster still shirtless? Still shirtless? No? No. The new directions sign up sheet goes up new directions, um and e W space directions right, Um, people didn't know this, like people still don't know, like massive fans that like Claudia and Jackie from The Toast, like Morning Toast still didn't know that New Directions is nude erections.
That's what it's supposed to sound like. And also he's waking up in the middle of the night and I think that was that was definitely I I was probably a nod to the the original screenplay. Um, this is also little tidbit. Um, this is where we came up with Tina's last name. So in the script, yeah, so in the script, um, we were about to shoot this where we all walk up and we saw our names and then it cuts to our auditions and um, Ian was there, Brad was there. I don't know if Brad
was there. Actually Ian and Ryan were there, and I walked up and um, I said, what is my last Like what am I going to sign my last name? And He's like see Tina see And I was like, well, what does it stand for? And He's like, Ian's like, that's a really good question. Why don't we do Cohen Cohen Cohen Chang? Um? Because my last name was is I don't know still is? I guess my maiden name is Ushkowitz. And he was. The people were just like floored by, you know, this little Korean American with like
a Jewish last name. So this is a nod to Jenna and Cohen. Check yeah, I'm sweet. Also, wasn't there like a continuity issue with the sign up sheet? Was there that when you like it was originally written and it was like Tina, like you would write in a stutter as I did. I did shoot that once. We did shoot that once that it was like, um, like
I wrote like I stuttered. But then I think they had me do it the other way just in case, and I think and then it cuts back to it and both yea and tenas do you remember these auditions? So then the auditions come up and I remember, yes that it was like late at night. It wasn't like a last minute decision or something. It was the last minute decision, which was my nightmare. You weren't here, right, You weren't there for it because I was. You were
you hung out? I hung out because I wanted to see. Also, we were shooting in Long Beach and that was not close to I. For any of you geography nerds, I lived in Santa Clarita, which is northern l A so far you were, so it was wried and Long Beach was the opposite direction, and so I was in no rush to go back because I'm like, what am I going to do? I'm not excited to drive two hours
home right now we were. I was honestly concerned for you because I was like, he's going to fall asleep with the wheel where sometimes, like early on you did sleep on my couch because we were like shooting till midnight and then had to be there at six um. No, this was actually yeah, So we were supposed to do this at the end of the shoot, like at the end of the week, and for some reason scheduling how TV works, everything that pulled up and I had not
rehearsed this song yet. So Tina's original audition song was if I were a Bell from Guys and Dolls? Is that right? Guys and Dolls? I think so. And because my costume was like already and she was a sweet little girl. And then when everything switched over and Ryan decided she was going to be gothic and I went gothic like it was. I was stressed. I was really really stressed. Had they not addressed the that song issue? Yet after they changed your wardrobe, Um, they addressed the
song issue. But I thought on the schedule that I had time, So okay, so you knew what song was going to be. I did know, We did know it was going to be I kissed a girl that had to get cleared, So I think they knew. I just hadn't gone, you know, even like I hadn't rehearsed it. Yeah, because I mean, to be fair, we were doing we were shooting how many hours a day and then still rehearsing for all the other group numbers and things, so there was a lot of free times. It was chaos.
We also, I mean side note, we normal episode we would try to shoot in eight days. The pilot we shot over three weeks, not including the two three weeks of rehearsal prior to shooting. So there was a much longer time period in which it took to do all these things. And it wasn't because we had more time. We were still filling up all of that time with shooting things and rehearsing and recording figuring things out. Yeah,
because we didn't have a system yet. It was not the well oiled machine and eventually became a couple of years later. Yes, um, so back then I kissed a girl. No, it was just it was wild and it was late at night. I remember being really tired and really stressed about it, and then Zach Woodley was I was like, what am I going to do with the choreographer? Honestly sorry, our choreographer, amazing choreographer who literally choreographed all seven numbers
that we did. Um, it's mind blowing to me. I remember being outside the high school and Long Beach and you panicking and knew that fear of God in your eyes, and you were pacing around, and it was also very indicative of everybody's personalities of Amber was like okay, and you're like, okay, I gotta get this right. I wasn't prepared, but I have to get this right, and you're pacing and Chris is sort of like went away. Literally he
literally just disappeared and did his own thing. Yeah. Yes, um, it is very type of of me to feel very underprepared. But there was something about it that like we felt like we needed something like really strong and really like I don't know, commanding, and something that maybe would like shock Mr Shoe. So Zach came up with this move that you know, the hip hit. That felt insane. I mean it really felt insane, but also felt really right.
It felt really right. It also didn't help you sort of like get over the nerves of like I have to be ridiculous now what we're doing. Yes, and those um, those audition songs were some of the only things that we recorded. We we did live um probably ever so we sang all of that live with Brad Ellis on the piano, UM, whereas as most of you know, we lip sing and would prerecord all of these songs and UM previous to shooting them. But you all sounded great.
It's very kind. That's very very kind. I was very nervous. UM. But these audition songs, I feel like really also set kind of the tone. UM. It also was reflective of how we rehearsed in real life. Do you remember one of the first days of our vocal rehearsals, everyone had to go around and do the audition songs. Yes, that's right because we were our first group number was Sdaniel
Rock in the Boats. We have been working on that and then it was like, oh, let's just go over these just in case, and then Amber, you and Chris saying, and that was the first time that we had ever heard each other saying yes, and we were all floored. Florida, Florida. Everybody was so different and so it was just it was really, that was really, it was magical. That's a really cool moment. We should also like take a running tally or make some notes for questions we want answered
by Ryan. We can do true or false. And then at the end of the episode sent him a voice note because there's gotta be the slushy comes out of nowhere and yeah, I feel like that was an Ian thing too. We gotta ask Ryan's even ever had a slushy? Well, let's put that on the list. You've never had a slushy? Like, have you even tasted you had a magical goodness of a slushy? Probably? Not? Probably, I can't imagine him having a slushy. No, that queen has never stepped into a seven.
Somebody's missing, No, he doesn't. I love that. I love doing a Coca cola and a little cherry in my slafe when I was obviously you gotta make okay. Yeah, um, that's a good one though. Let's let's clock that one for Ryan and then we're into a little Rachel introduction montage in the MySpace era that we all survived. Yeah, um, um, some of these comments were on the space page were incredible, like any sort of other comedy that came through because of Ian Ian wrote all of Sue's stuff, where all
of these I'm going to scratch up my eyes. If I were your parents, I would sell you bad. Yeah, but you know that you very much know the tone of the show very quickly. Um. And then also did you see that when Rachel states that she tries to post on her MySpace page every day, um to keep her toweling alive and growing. The when the cheerios are watching it on the benches, um, in the gymnasium, it says in the boxes say similar videos. It stays there
in no other video post continuity. Let me just stay here right now here, and now that continuity in our show. Poor poor poor Carol Banker and um Babs because I just called her Babs. Perhaps was script supervisor. God bless them because they're just angels. Um. They had to keep track of like when our hair was in front and when our hair was in back, and like all of these wild things that just don't track right, and there's so many people in every scene. It's just so hard.
It's so hard. Berhabs would be like Jenna Hair, Jenna Hair, um about Rachel's like laptop stickers, hot stuff. It's really is gold. Also sing all the time whenever I see a hot boy, I go I love him, And it's from this. And also because I knew nothing in musical theater except Phantom of the Opera, this was my introduction to the song on my own well, your song that no one had ever heard of, Welcome on My Broadway.
I feel like every time we go through these episodes, you're gonna be like this was the first time I heard that song. Yeah, I get used to it. We've trained you, Okay, So we go into our first rehearsal um and this was a very nerve racking scene for me. This is your solo, this is your moment. It was my soul. We also did pre record this, but I was so flat that it sounded live. It was before they started fixing us. Well. They wanted this to sound scratchy, right,
to be like a shop moment. No, it sure sounded scratchy, sounded great. So this was really a fun number to rehearse as well. We rehearsed in Hollywood and just like getting you getting I remember you getting used to the wheelchair, Yeah, and all very much at this time that we all, I think we all were very similar to the characters. There was a lot of like team building getting to know you going on. And that was our first group
scene with Ryan because he was directing it. We got in trouble and the scene we got in trouble, we couldn't stop I couldn't stop laughing. We all couldn't stop laughing because he asked us to all kind of look up at the ceiling and like look like be sad
and like think about what was coming next. And he kept like, remember he kept throwing things at us from behind this like um from where he was in video village vaguely and and he just kept like having us improv things and making Curt say stuff and dying laughing. I mean, I think I laughed through this entire pilot um and he was like, Okay, you can't do that selfishly.
I just remember I wasn't originally supposed to be pushed into the wall in the scene, and he's he said, let's try it, and I was like, okay, and just absolutely murdered my knees. But you know, it's all good. I'm fine. Um. And it's the first Rachel storm out. It is the first racial storm out, one of one thousand fifty two. Um. I I love this number though. This was a really fun little number. And I also love if you look at that choir room, it's obviously not the choir room that we used the rest of
the series. Tell people, tell the people what they want to all. Because what we did was over the first um season and a half we reconstructed most of these locations so that when we start episode two filming, we have reconstructed most of the school. So there's a brand new choir room that after a real choir room that we shot at in Burbank, and then the auditorium and the halls were made to look like it and everything.
The auditorium wasn't built. I think it wasn't done until a couple episodes end of season two, and it is almost a foot by foot reconstruction of the auditorium at the high school we shot in the Long Beach. That's crazy, but they made every obviously for filming courses, they expanded every single room to make it a little bigger and easier to light. Um, because that choir room I remember
shooting in the one that sit Down Your rocking. The boat was shot and the pilot was very small and hot and dark and very dark, yes, and but it was really cool. It's like such a it's a smaller version. So if you go and you look at the pilot and then you look at the new choir room in the next episode, you'll see the next episode probably, um, you'll see like a little bit of difference, but it's pretty spot on. Kudos to our um our department, the crew,
amazing crew. Um. All right, let's keep let's keep going. So Figgins tells you that they need the auditorium for um for a Is that right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. You gotta make money somewhere. And the only way he can have it is if if we make it to regionals, and if Glee can stay, the Glee club can stay
if we win regionals. So there and lies the entire crux of the Glee clubs existence, as we are going to start working towards competitions and competition to competition because we were fighting for our survival and at every turn Susilvester is trying to take us down, and so is Figgins writing for our survival. I like, yeah, um alright, so sheets and things, Um, this is where we meet Terry. Evil Terry who was a Ryan Murphy alum justin gil Sing who was on nip talking got killed off, um
weirdly in a very r rated manner. But Cheats and Things is really just haroard bamboo. Like, it's just all these little quirks that made the pilot even more colorful and you know, created that world that Ryan was talking about. I also think Ryan loves the bead Beth and Beyond moment because do you know how many times I've talked to him on the phone and he has made jokes about bed Beth Nyond? But has he ever really been in a bed bathroom? And this is like a slushy?
Can we add that to the list you've ever been into a bad bathroom Beyond? Because I don't think he's ever been in one. Honestly, Um, this is Terry. This is where she sets the scene. She's upset because she's working four hours a day, three days a week and having dinner by herself and that is just unacceptable. Truly unacceptable. And also this is where Schuster runs into ex glee club teacher, disgraced goolee club teacher Sandy Ryerson, who is
a proud drug dealer and is loving it. I mean, how times have changed, right, I mean now weed is legal in so many states. And back then, back then, we were bribing, we were blackmailing, we were children chronic glove. Um, that's okay. So we find out that he's a dragdale right now. So in fact, Stephen Toblawski and Groundhog Day, his character was named Ned Ryerson. It's Sandy Ryerson. What I love little things like that? What a nugget, Kevin? Yeah,
I found it all by myself. Um, okay, alright, so we're now we're back at school, because why wouldn't we be back at school? Alright, So Emma steps in Gum, which is like her worst nightmare, literally her worst nightmare. But the costume is so good, Oh it's the best. And the shoe is good, and how it shot is so pretty cute and the credit card it's just so cute. It's really cute. Yeah, it's so cute. Um, But this is it, this is where we go. This is off
to the races. We go. Emma convinces or suggests to Will that she finds somebody popular to jointly. And she's not wrong. She's always there supporting Will. Why why she always supporting Why? I don't know. We have yet to find out. The episode is not over yet, alright, So this scene where do you go to find the popular kids? You go to the football team. Obviously, um, this is where Schuster gives his pitch to the football team. Puck farts on him. You know, it's normal teenage boy antics
and the locker also, I mean is it? I also think that's setting a precedent of like a lot of scenes with teachers and kids happening in the locker room. There's a lot of weird honestly though. It's it's a good set, Kevin, Yeah, it was. It was a good set. You're right, another one they recreated. There's also they talk about grays Natomy and the scene which just shows you how long grays Natomy has been on the air. Oh my gosh, it's it's been on since I was a newborn.
Harry wasn't even on Glee yet and now Harry, Oh my god, that's wild, you know, good for them because I freaking love Graysonatomy, support Harry and grays Anatomy. That's right. Um, okay, so nobody signs up. But this number, God, this number gives me chills every time I watch it. Um, really it creeps me out. Really, I think it's so good. I think it's good, and he sounds great, but also it's like creepy then Mr Shoe creeping on a naked boy. Yeah, teen teen boy not okay, it's not okay, But I
will say, Corey, I love this song. I love of Corey and I love this this like intro to him. I think it's like it really sets the tone. Um, and it's adorable. Um, he's like a big puppy and he's just adorable and so endearing and immediately makes us love Finn. Yeah, we love Finn alright. So she who
pretends to find chronic lady and he blackmails him. I actually remember this scene when they were filming it because it was like one of our first days filming, and it was like the first scene of the of the pilot, right, the first that seemed that was filmed, the first thing that they filmed on the pilot, And then we were there very shortly after to do something ridiculous. We're rehearsing don't stop. Oh we were. Yeah, that was the same day we found out Jane was on the show. Oh,
and that's the day we ate cake. And that was the day I got replaced as Finn Standon by actual Finn. What Yeah, don't stop Kevin O. So Kevin would play Finn and don't prsals got it? Got it? Oh my god, my memory, that's right, and your gut and then you had to go sit in your chair. I felt Yeah, I felt so sad. And then I had to go learn how to play guitar. You actually had to learn how to play that bass though it was it was an electric guitar. Oh, electric guitar. Sorry, Yeah, that was
very hard. Believable but hard. Was it believable enough? Kevin? It was believable. I tried my heart. I did it. I also like, how did they get this past people at Fox? You know, for all the things that an executive calling the show what they called it at the time, and people champion, you know, having Dana and Jenny champion the show. But you didn't have a scene where there's a teacher creeping in the showers and then blackmails a kid,
you know, with drugs. I do remember reading the pilot, and this is what made me love the pilot was that the show was dark and didn't care Irreverend and just like, oh yeah, we're gonna black male high school students and league club. And I remember at my apartment building where I lived, laughing out loud and takes my manager like, yes, I need to hush for the show. It m hmm. I don't even remember when I first read this script. Honestly my memory, I don't remember that either.
That's when there was a character named Away became and that role, as we know, was made for Chris. Yeah, you know, just Golden Globe winning Nobody, no big, all right. So then we go into the amazing background on Finn and that awesome montage with Romey royse Mott and it's just so good too. That denim outfit so good. Put it in the Smithsonian rowe looks great. I just that that really Also, I was like, we didn't see that. So when we watched in the pilot, we were like, wow,
this is awesome. Um, and then we going to You're the one that I want, right, yes, which was the first thing we ever rehearsed with Corey. That's right now now, now real quick, this is where Rachel touches Tina's she does, oh yeah, you didn't see that? Oh yes, and the number she does remember that makes it. Yes, that was the whole thing because she kissed a girl and she liked it. But then that all went away. Um, but
that was like a weird one off moment. I think we were just figuring things out and Tina could still like it, do you know what I mean? Like in this day and age, Gina could still like it. Tina is a bisexual queen, that is right, and she's office
when he's talking to Finn. Also, this is like where we get an intro to all these incredible props that we see a lot in Emma's office later on of all, like the random pam flashers and signs, like in his offices you could land a prison son and everyoneuld already helped the kids, which was so good. The children are Mamma like the bean, like the bean. Well everybody that was actually really helpful for me, honestly, Lama like the
bean because everybody was calling in Lima. I still have to think about it respect to have to go RSP E C T S B. All right, So then we go back to Terry and Will. But this really takes this, honestly, let's be roll. This really takes this too. Where Will wants to take us on a field trip, right, like this is the whole point of that, right yeah, And we get to see more of home life is not all it's cracked up to be. And Terry is really into her craft closet and really into this American puzzle
she's doing. We love that. We love that, um all right, so we'll need chaperones and who else? Who else? Kevin obviously just the sweet tweet, nicest little teacher on the planet, sweet tweet Emma Um, Emma signs up. She's very excited. This is where we see the dough ide look of the iconic do ide look of jam Amy's and Emma Pillsbury. It's also when the scheming gets going, when you know, Finn has to get a football practice because let's going this trip and pucks like that doesn't sound right, It's
not gonna gets mad because he's got a crush on him. Eminem. It's all this and it is also the first time we get to this field trip, and it's also the first time all these people, all these characters are connected together. So pause for a second, but we can like in the recap, eminem, Um, my daughter's name is Emma, which we know now, but yeah, I kept saying to David. We were like, what are people are going to call her? Um? Like, what's her nickname going to be? And I was like,
is it going to be Eminem? And He's like what? And I was like, where did I hear that? It's glee? You got accepted by your own job. But this is how bad my memory, Eminem. I was like, where am ir for? Okay? The character Emma is incredible? Yes, exactly, Okay, all right, so all the characters coming together and this was our last day of filming and this was really sweet. Um. This is also the first time we saw vocal adrenaline.
Is that right? Performed? Yea, and in Kevin and Jenna's life and in um Ardentina's and we had a lot of well, I had a lot of friends who were answers and vocal journaline. And then you go back like Harry Shum's wife Shelby is in the number that's right, Brooklifton, our other choreographer, was in this number, and so was her sister, I mean all our and then all of our friends. Yes, and then a lot of these dancers
ended up going on tour with us. That's right, um, so this is the first time we also see um
the flashback of Quinn. Yes, Quinn Fabre, Diana Gron And Diana was the last person to be cast on the show, so we didn't really know her either until we started filming the show, right yeah, well, I mean sorry after the pilot, but like um, yeah, we didn't work with her at all, which she felt also the phantom character at this shoot on this day, I remember asking um Ian about casting her because I knew she was We had already started shooting and they hadn't cast the Queenn
Rule yet, and I had so many friends who had audition for her, including like Ashley Benson who went on to be um and I remember Ian saying, we can, We'll get in on here and ask him about it. I I do remember. They were just like at a lost because the network wouldn't approve anyone, right, but the network loved Diana as they should and here she here she The rain begins yeah, the rain begins. Um uh, this is the cute little um PB and J share
with the sandwich and uh. Someone commented on Will's outfit in the scene that his leather jacket he looked like Spike from Buffy the Vampires And they're not wrong. I'm not wrong about that. That's that's pretty great. Kevin's eyes like wow. Um. And this is one of Tina's only lines in the pilot. It ye, where did it doomed? Um? It was so good this number. Um. I remember also like our reaction laughing at this one too. I just laughed at the whole pilot. This was also when we
came back. After the pilot got picked up and we got back, we had about a month to sort of start rehearsing and get in fighting shape, dancing shape sort of. Where do you remember Brooke and Zack started teaching us this numbers and you did the lift with me the little like, um, you were my partner. It's also when I everyone convinced me and start drinking protein shakes because I didn't know what they were and I didn't realize you needed to work out in addition to having protein shakes,
So I just started gaining a lot of points. Stop stop, stop stop, you're like the caltate bars. I was that. I was so dumb because we were finally on the lot in Paramount and you know they have a little anyway, we don't need to use that, but no, no, we have to use that. That number was so good. It's also crazy to think about and what they were too good and what world would we ever be able to compete with them? I'm not sure we ever did. I know now we didn't, but that we we talked about
this on the show. They write this into the show. That's not that's not our fourteme. That's not what we do. We have a lot of heart, okay, and a lot of we have heart. Okay. So we go home and Terry is throwing herself a party. Obviously she put up there's a congratulation science behind her um and she has glasses of champagne, which she's pregnant. Well, she's also not in the right state of mind. No, that's right, she's everything's falling apart, like Finn got caught going to the show.
That's Harry is saying she's pregnant? Is she is? She? And then this this little scene that I love so much that we shot where Will tells us he's quitting and I actually cried is the first of many cries, one of the first of many times when Artie is magically up on the stairs for some reason. That's right, I remember I carried me out there. It's okay, Yeah, that's true. I also was wondering, like why everyone was so emotional because we just got together, like Will just yeah.
But you know, the stakes are high. Everything matters in high school. Right. Do you remember when you're in high school and your tests, everything has everything matters, everything matter. The true test of a great high school show is to be able to capture those moments. And Ryan mentioned that of your first where everything feels so heightened, your first brushes, your first loves and heartbreak, and tests are competitions, whatever it may be, everything is absolutely the end of
the world. And for the glee club, this was the end of the world, except Rachel had other ideas. Um and then this really sweet seen also right, is right after this My Memories where where Emma kind of shows Will something which was cut out but no, but I can't even imagine it any other way. But that scene, it's that music that they play. It was the scoring that they play in every of those heartfelt moments, and you're like, oh god, I got got again. Um. That
makes me emotional every time I watch it. Um. And then she has his solo that's right, which was originally Viva la Vida colay I also which I also can't imagine. I think this was right. Let's put this down for Ryan Choue or falls. That song Vio Levida didn't get cleared. Uh huh m. Copley said, not today, not today, not today. Um,
all right. So this is also like the beginning of Rachel and Finn that we see, right, it's a very good scene of Rachel being out of her mind and fronting Finn and Finn sort of folding but feeling guilty about just always conflicted, a slight conflict. And then and then we also see Quinn and Santana that's right, yeah, and we don't know how horribly mean they are or how brilliant they are, okay, um, And then it's your your swan song already, thank you very much. What was
that like being in the porter body? Was it a real porter body? It was a real porter potty, but it was brand new. It was very clean, so I'm not traumatized any sort of but like also wasn't comfortable and it was tight, and I remember sort of like cutting up my knuckles. It was a little question of no. I just felt it was one of those This was the first thing I shot for the pilot, and it also just was so much fun to get to. I really felt like I was in a big production, you know,
like I'm in the outfit. Yeah, I'm in the porter potty, like I'm in the thing. There's props, there's like I really got to like use everything around me and that was so much fun. Um and when party comes back, sorry porter body comes back in a later episode named that episode, I don't know. Yeah, I don't know either. Typical okay, anyway, sorry, keep going trivia that she can't even answer it. I just remember being in a porter buddy,
that's all. Remember. This is also the first time I got to hang out with Corey and I admitted to him that I was resentful. Did he laugh? He must have laughed, and he I think he was shocked that I had seen Kyle's wife. I brought my mom to set that day, and she was really like she didn't like seeing me in the wheelchair. Really, yeah, Betsy, she was just like it just I don't want you, like to get injured or anything. Oh okay, I'm I guess acting mom acting acting. It was such a It was
a great day though. It was a great experience, and I got to hang out with everyone. That's right. But also this is where Fenn proves he's actually a good guy and he rescues me. He gets mad at his own friends and brings me back to the glee club to be like, hey, guys, don't count us out yet. Hey guys, we're back. We we skipped, I wasn't so wrong. We This is later the tape of him and Nationals. This is now, so then we now is when we actually watched that. See, this is how bad we are.
We're not even good at recapping, even with papers in front of us. Don't say we Jenna, I um okay. So yeah, So Emma now shows the old typically at Nationals now that Will has left and has a job, like an accounting job or applying for He's applying for an accounting job. Money for the baby, the baby, the baby, which we don't we think is real. Yeah, the baby's coming. The baby's coming. Um. And then here we are and
this is it. This is the number that took. I think we did seventy five times um for five different renditions that were wrong, all wrong. Um. And here we do, Here we are, Here we go Kevin. I was working out yesterday and the song that opened up my workout was a remix I don't stop believe n did you run out? I almost jumped off my trampoline. This song follows us everywhere we go once a day, maybe if we're off in the world. Ya, everywhere we go. Um. And this was also the first of how many times
six or seven times six? And then we did like it was the five of us and it was a twelve of us and then some of us did it and I don't even know we did it once when when Quinn was Quinn was pregnant and throwing up the burrito baby. Um, six times, six times times and the gang gets a number together to convince not even to convince you to come back. We do it for ourselves, that's right. And then Shoe sees it and it is a beautiful ending of him coming in crying. We see
Sue and the cheerios, piste off Puck angry. Everyone's in. Everyone knows everybody's in. Also, um uh, this is when we got in trouble with Ryan. We didn't even get to ask him about it, but this is when we got in trouble with Ryan. We were footing around on Will's coverage, which now we know from Ryan saying it.
That was also like such a massive moment of like Matt Matt Morrison crying when he's watching us, and we were like making dirty dance moves in the back and Rand was like, you guys like humping each other and he's like, you guys, you have to be serious and do this dance number. And I don't think I ever fussed around with Ryan directing ever again, never again, ever again. It's also because he was so fast and knew exactly what he needed to do, and so like I never
footsed around when he was on set. No, it was a good it was better to learn that lesson early on. Yes, that's right, we were. And we're also like he probably felt bad yelling at us too because we were so young. No, we deserved it. Absolutely. It was also late at night. Um and that's that's the pilot, you guys, that's the pilot. For the hundred thousands times that we've seen it. Yeah, and you've probably said, you know what, she still got it?
She got it. I will say, well, we'll go through this series and you'll hear us when episodes don't got it and that pilot is still the one. So every week, UM Tardie takes. This is our version of yeah who, This is our version of UM class superlatives. So we're going to give you our takes each week on the following categories UM start with cringe moment, Kevin um, it's
it's got to be shirtless, Schuster, and under five. I was also going to say Stephen Tobolaski, UM touching touching a student or Sandy Ryerson touching a student right right right, Sorry, sorry, worst dance move. I think that was. You're the one that I want where Tina gets tatas touched. Yeah, it's a great one. Okay, the song don't Stop obviously the best line. I mean, sentimentally, being part special makes you special.
But also I have to I have a phone, or in a couple of minutes on the top one with a major media outlet, I'll probably do it on my iPhone. Yeah, that was love that best performance by a prop porter potty. Yes, um didn't age well, Sandy Ryerson, Um, the marijuana aged well. The greatest anatomy mentioned right. Absolutely, Shanna Rhimes knows what she's doing. So um. One of my favorite segments we're gonna be doing is should be found on TikTok uh.
And we're starting this off because the ship you guys say is out of this world is wild and so we want to take this opportunity to debunk some myths and some hot takes that aren't so hot. I feel like we got to start with the one on the one Ken Ken Leah Michelle read barely, but I'm kidding. Obviously she can read. I don't know why. Of course she can read, you guys, she can read, so I don't know. Stupid, I'm sorry you come at me, but like stupid, Thank god, I'm glad she posted some yeah
that was funny about it and leaned into it. It's very very good, but like what why it's been on for years too. I can't wait for these tiktoks because I'm not on TikTok like I don't. I don't go on TikTok very much. Well, mothers don't go on TikTok. No, I don't go on TikTok. I'm really looking forward to you bringing me all of them so we can talk about them. I just wanted to get this one out of the way because everyone asks us single day just be done with it. I even know about this one,
which says a lot. Yeah, let it go, let it out, goodbye. And now that we've debunked that that little nugget, that's the end of our pilot episode. We're super so excited that we got to um kick it off with Ryan Murphy and with this episode, we're super super super grateful, like we said before, UM for all of your support and listening and subscribing, like this is unreal and we we can't wait to keep going with you guys. Okay, I sent him the voice note. What did he say?
Did he respond? He responded, he just responded, okay, okay, um too that he's never had a slush He said, false, um, And so he has on and he's been into a seven eleven He said, I live at seven elevens as a kid because I'm from Indiana. Okay, fair enough, and then he said false. Of course, I've been to bed Beth and Beyond and frequently them often. Okay, so I forget like he's from he's like from Middle America. Okay, yeah and then true. Um Copoay was supposed to be
in the pilot. UM, it didn't clear for the pilot, but obviously later they did clear right right. Well, thank you very much, Ryan, Thanks Ryan, thank you for joining us for the pilot episode. UM, come back on Thursday because we have a very special guest. Oh my gosh, I'm so excited, Little Chris Cooper is going to be here. UM see you on Thursday. Bye bye bye.
