Intro / Opening

Carol Marks

Well, hello, we are back. It's Monday. This is Carol and the jet. Hi

The Gent

everyone.

Unknown

We are back with another episode of whatever. We tried to figure out what we were going to talk about and we really couldn't come up with anything except maybe

The Gent

we had potatoes last night for dinner with our dinner that I'm a that were phenomenal.

Unknown

Yes, they were.

First, what we had for dinner

The Gent

I follow and watch a guy named jack Chaplin, his daddy jack cooking with the blues on YouTube. And he did a dolphin nice potato, which is basically a potato or Groton that is rich and divide. So I recommend them highly to anyone.

Unknown

It was delicious. I

The Gent

work so good. Oh, I'm still feeling it today. Yes.

Unknown

Fantastic. We're good. Delicious.

The Gent

Anyway, that was one thing I wanted to talk.

Unknown

Okay. All right. Well, that was quick.

The Gent

What do you want to talk about?

Carol

Well, okay, I always say normally on the weekends, we'll go to Dairy Queen get a blizzard right. Now normally, we didn't. did not do it this weekend, because we're trying to be better with our eating habits except for the potatoes.

Unknown

But

The Gent

we're only gonna have those on birthdays, birthdays, anniversaries, right? So if you know of anybody having a birthday tomorrow, let's make them a day those anniversaries to

Unknown

know but

Carol

because the weekends are really all we have together since our schedules are so messed up. That is true. So we'll go out to dinner and then we'll go get it Blizzard or something. But when we go through the drive thru, and I've been meaning, oh, I've been meaning to talk about this forever. I wanted to make a video of it and put it on YouTube. But and it's not. I'm not picking on Dairy Queen is it just happened. This just happened to come up. And it's

The Gent

not just the drive.

Handing Change Back

Unknown

And it's not just the drive there. It's everywhere. Okay, let me tell what it is, then we can talk about so okay. Oh, people like us like to pay with cash sometimes, instead of a credit card or debit card. So we'll give them you know, how much is it? Blizzard?

The Gent

We'll just say

Unknown

$11?

The Gent

Well say you $9.43. Okay, so

Unknown

the jet will give them a 10? No, it's got to be more than that. Because they got to give, give it back with the dollar and the change.

The Gent

They can just put they put it on the recycling receipt. Yeah, but she could do it. Alright, it's $11.28. So you can 15 $15.10 and

Unknown

they're given the change back to you with the bills on the bottom, the receipt and then change on top of all the paper and they just hand it back to you like that. All in one all in one. Like a wet paper plate is about to fall.

The Gent

Yeah. And you know, it's it's one of those things where, you know, you're it's so awkward to try to put your hand out to try to let him set it on it because that's what they want you to do, I guess. And you can't just grab it because it's kind of like a wet paper plate. And so they've got this, this thing, stick it out there curiously balanced. Like, here it is sucker. You know, get your

Here's your change. Now, when you look at them, they look at you like, you're not me just get your money, right.

Carol

I don't care that they don't count it back to me. That's not a thing anymore for me, because now they have the electronic things that it tells you how much change to give back. But I would prefer them to put the coins in my palm of my hands first, and then the paper on top

The Gent

of the paper. Absolutely. That's just common courtesy. I find that

Unknown

when did it go to others? I

The Gent

think there's just, you know, I don't know if it's, you know, this way they can do without possibly touching you and getting go. No, we

Unknown

just it started happening way before COVID.

The Gent

But it's it's common courtesy. You know, I think it's just sheer laziness.

Unknown

I think it is. I think it is I strongly agree. I know when I was in high school working at fast food, everything. They taught me how to handle change back and we countered it back.

The Gent

Back. Absolutely. Well, it does two things. Number one, it makes sure the customer knows they're getting the proper amount of change. And it also for the person working that register makes it so that at the end of the day, they know their registers correct, right. Because in most jobs if your registers not correct, you get fired or you get missed, you know, changed or something. You know, that's but that's just a

way of safeguarding things. But I think you know, I I don't know if it's, you know, this is faster, we can get you through the line faster and serve more people. I

Carol

think it's just laziness. And a lot of people don't pay cash anymore, either. A lot of people are paying with debit cards, credit card, that kind of thing. So they they're not using as much cash anymore. So these young kids that are coming up, they, they don't they handle it a lot. Yeah.

The Gent

Well, that's a definite pet peeve of mine is

Unknown

not caring,

The Gent

as well know when going through, like when I have, you know, when the bill is a certain amount. And let's say it's a $10.48. And I've got a 20 and a $1. Bill, and I give it to him. And I look at you like what am I supposed to do with this? You gave me too much. Here's $1 back. Yeah. Like no, here. You take that. And just, you know, realize that you're gonna give me a $10 bill back in the chain. Right. And it puzzles them.

Yeah, yeah. They don't know what the thing was the the room, you know, back here that does not compete. That will Robinson, you know, that does not come. I guess

Unknown

they don't teach that kind of math in school anymore.

The Gent

Well, that's the pet peeve I was thinking about. There you go. Thank you very much. As you people probably don't know, I'm in the golf business. And one of the

Math in Golf

requirements in the tournament for people is to just make sure on their scorecard that their Hole by hole on their card is correct. There, don't have to add it up. But when you're at a scorer's table when your tournament, you ask them to add it up. And this again, go hand in hand with what we're talking about. Well, I used to go in and do scoreboards with them. But you know, I got to the point where it's just ridiculous because it was way too slow.

They couldn't do it. And I'm talking about the players and the coaches. So what they do is, and you know, you're thinking Hole by hole, when you add it up, you're looking at flip numbers like 4567, which you can look at and go, four and five is nine, and three is 12. And six is 18. And add it up pretty quickly in your head and just mark it down. Well, the kids is I'd sit down and coaches inadequate scorecard. First thing is kids go, oh, somebody's got a phone. Because they

couldn't do it. They cannot process adding up numbers in their heads. Wow, they cannot do it.

Unknown

If I don't know the timetables either.

The Gent

No one wanted to go into that. But that's not what bugged me. Oh, okay. That, you know, I was like, Oh, you kids, you got to be crazy, you know. So I'm getting cards off the table. And I'm adding, you know, from putting posters when we both this woman, and I looked down, and the teachers, the coaches, which are mostly all teachers, as well, as they're getting their cards from the kids, they're getting the phone and adding it up. They can't do it either. No, they can't do it

either. Like, Oh, my God, this, this has been happening for quite quite quite some period of time that they can't they just can't think that's too abstract, I guess,

Unknown

is that critical thinking? Is that what they don't?

The Gent

know? I think it's just I don't know, they don't have any practice doing it. Yeah, they don't have any practice. So they don't know how to do it. And, and then their teacher, but they don't know where to and then kids and the teachers don't know relations to numbers. Because, you know, like, if you're looking at a scoreboard for a high school golf tournament, and you know that four H or 32. So you don't have to have a calculator, sit

up there. And you know, add, and you look up there and you see a 79 and 8081 and 82. And this is just talking number relationships and how numbers work. You can look at that and go, Okay, you got 79 is a negative one, you got a zero, you got a plus one and a plus two. So you're plus two over 320. You got 322. And you go on, and they're up there, give me a calculator. Somebody?

Unknown

Do you think, okay, they don't know how to do that kind of math in their head, obviously. What do you think they are reaching for a phone number one habit now? or number two, they think it's faster, more convenient? Well, I'm more accurate, I

The Gent

don't think but I don't think they know the difference. Okay. Because it's always been phone in hand,

Unknown

even the teachers? Well, I get something in teachers out as

The Gent

well. Because you know, those teachers are 27 years old, they're 30 years old, which is, you know, like 10 years younger than they.

Unknown

Right.

The Gent

Wow. But yeah, that was the pet peeve and that goes back to relationship members is no as far as

Unknown

Math and Math in general what they teach in high school. I know when I was in high school, they taught us how How to balance checkbook

The Gent

or they don't have any idea how to do that. But yeah, that goes right back to where we're talking about the cash register, dwarfing cash or know where they cannot count back cash because they don't know how to. They can't take $10.21 and look at $11 or look at $21 and go, okay, you know, you're getting 79 cents back plus a $10. Bill, right? I did have one story about that. I can't I can't remember it now. But it was one of those ones where the, you know, it was $18 and are

$19.81. And I gave gave them a $20. Bill. And whoever it was

Money, again

punched in like a $50. Bill and looked up and change. Like, did you give me a 22? option A 50? Okay, so I said, well, just give me you know, give me just, you know, it's eight teams, you know, you need to give me 18 cents back. Well, it says $30.18. I said, but she punched in, so don't worry about that. So hold on.

Unknown

I remember this.

The Gent

And the person looked at somebody, I think the bagger and said, What do I need to do? Because I pushed in 20. I mean, he gave me a 20. But I punched in 50. And his total was $19.81. I said, just give me 19 cents, because that's you know, that's all you have to me.

Unknown

I know I can

The Gent

hold on hold on good kid, could you go get the manager and they had to go get to manage your mind. And I'm standing in line and I looked back and I said just give me 19 cents. That's all you owe me. There people, other people standing in line. And they had to go get the manager to figure it out. And I'm thinking, what what is what in the world's going on? and i and i did i i embarrassed? I don't know if I embarrass myself or embarrass them. I said out loud. I cannot

believe this. Again, a couple of people, you know kind of in lala land, but there was one man back there going. Oh, Lord, God help us. Yeah. And they want these people to vote at age 14 and 15

Unknown

Well, they're the ones that are coming up and going to run the country now. God bless you, God bless us.

The Gent

Well, you know,

Unknown

I help us when we're the ones that raised them to

The Gent

at least my checkbook balance that's for sure.

Unknown

Of course I haven't balanced checkbook in like 20 years

The Gent

old you're falling into the trap Archie Carroll

Carol

well today you would have been disappointed in me when I

Always Carry Cash

went out to Oh gee what happened brunch with my actual was yesterday brunch with my family from out of town we went to a help and they had a sign out on the door that said cash only because I guess their credit card machine was down or whatever

The Gent

Oh my

Unknown

cash only and guess who didn't have any cash your wife that wouldn't be you would beat me and I know you're always harping on me to care always carry

The Gent

some cash always have cash but yeah,

Unknown

so my my auntie my aunt Tina had to pay for visitors from out of town I had

The Gent

let's go to brunch Oh, can you pay for mine? Yeah,

Carol

well we weren't gonna go we're awfully slack here and we weren't going to go to I hop in the first place we went to Cracker Barrel and we went to put our name on the list and it was going to be an hour wait and so one of the other people in our party got on the phone and called up I opposite and asked them what the weight was and they said 15 minutes so we got over there and got right in.

Unknown

Okay, that's good. That's good.

The Gent

Oh, like Cracker Barrel but I wouldn't want to sit around on a

Unknown

Sunday.

The Gent

So everybody goes out. Then they go. What are they low

What is Loafering?

for you? And then they go low friend,

Unknown

low friend. You know what low for Nia explain what low furring is I did not know what low frame either

The Gent

until a young lady who worked for me down at our golf course told me about it. And I would complain that on the way home on Sundays that I drive out in the country for our golf courses. And I would come and these cars would just be going next to zero miles an hour down the road. And you'd see six, seven people in the car. And what you know what, you know, if you just got out of church, you're Go, go, go eat dinner, go do something. She goes, Oh, we

do that all the time. I said what can you do is, is we call it low friend. You know, you've gone to church and you've got a big old meal in your belly and everybody just gets a car and you go ride around.

Unknown

The southern thing. We do that?

The Gent

I guess it is but I never heard of it. Yeah, we just go ride around country love like you call it luck. Yeah, my God, I can find I can find something better to do. This reminds me of an old Andy Griffith episode where they're all dry. You know, they all just got to church. They're driving down the road and Barney's new car and the steering wheel starts coming up. But that's what they're doing. They're just out low friend. Because that's what they were

doing. And you know, they gone down the mountain pilot or something had dinner and they were just on a slow drive back off. And that was what it was low free. Well,

Unknown

the Alabama mask mandate is no longer in effect

No More Masks in Alabama

for us in Alabama.

The Gent

That today,

Unknown

really well you see it all the time and where you work, they never

The Gent

was even more so today. Nobody got one. maybe one or two people do

Unknown

well, I went to Walmart when I was out. The other day, when I went to brunch. I went to Walmart somewhere pick something up in Athens. And more people were still wearing masks than not I was surprised.

The Gent

Well,

Unknown

I was surprised

The Gent

about the you know, a lot of people that haven't gotten vaccinated. We're probably were

Unknown

Yeah. And also I'm going to continue to work well, also, I just have it's become a habit. For me. It's true. I just reached out and put it on without even thinking about it. And now,

The Gent

I think it'll slowly fade away.

Unknown

Now I started to wear one at work because I work in a federal building, which is a pain in the butt. But I love my job.

The Gent

That's just one of those things you have to do and, and, you know, even even the people that we have that work for me that have been vaccinated, but they're still working man. Oh, yeah, absolutely. I

Unknown

mean, when when when do we get to that point where you feel like you don't have to worry anymore. I know. You said you're going to continue where? What? For? How long? Am I born yet?

The Gent

I don't know. I really hadn't. I don't think about that much. You know? I think it's just one of those ones. It's just gonna kind of wear off. Is it? I hope it does. Yeah. I don't know for sure.

Unknown

I wanted to I wanted to walk into Walmart so bad without a mask on. But I was like, Oh, no, I better not.

The Gent

Did they have a sign on the side please? No, I

Unknown

don't think they did. I didn't see it. I'll still wear when when I get my nails done too, because they still have their sign up. Right. And I loved my where I get my nails done. I love them and so I will abide by what they want. But if it's anybody else, I'm going somewhere else.

The Gent

Of course you know we have signs up on our doors, please wear a mask inside.

Unknown

Want to name sign

The Gent

with a sign. I didn't read it. Okay, thank you very much for shopping.

Unknown

Well, we're about at our limit right now. So well I got it all.

The Gent

That was fun. About 20 minutes worth already. Wow. Time flies. We have a fun. Yeah. All right. Well, that's that's good. Yeah. All right.

Unknown

You guys have a good week. I try. I will try to be back on Wednesday with my own little personal thing. But thanks for listening, guys. Have a good week. Bye.
