Episode description

A potentialy case-breaking development. The FBI today released several images and videos from the doorbell camera at Nancy Guthrie's home the night she disappeared. They show a man in a mask with gloves, and the images seem to put to rest any doubts about whether or not Guthrie was actually abducted.

Speaker 1

Hey there, folks.

Speaker 2

It is Tuesday, February tenth, and we are hopping on tonight because we have just gotten what is, without a doubt, the biggest development so far in the case of missing Nancy Guthrie. And with that, welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ. Robes are doing this here on Tuesday evening. I would not be surprised if we get up on Wednesday morning and have even more and possibly a suspect in this case.

Speaker 1

Was this is huge.

Speaker 3

Yes, to actually see footage of someone it looks to be a man, that is at least how police have described the person seen in surveillance video that they have been able to recover from the door cam of Nancy Guthrie. A man in a ski mask with gloves with the weapon, trying to mask the camera with brush and then eventually smashing the camera with his fist. It is so eerie, it is so scary in all of the theories of what could have happened, what may have happened, Who is responsible?

You see clearly there was someone on Nancy Guthrie's front porch intending to do harm.

Speaker 1

So this is what we got today from the FBI.

Speaker 2

Words started to leak out throughout the day that maybe something was coming, that maybe video is coming. Images were coming us. So Raylan's video was coming. But this is without a doubt. I don't exactly know why roams they continue to use the term potential suspect. But you told us that someone who was abducted from a home, and now you're showing us somebody who was at that home with a ski mask in the middle of the night. This has got to be obviously your suspect. So Cash

Mattel put out a statement earlier today. We'll share it with you now. But his statement essentially saying that this is video that the FBI that authorities are only getting right now, and that they have been working with the past week and a half to try to get it. But it took some police work, some detective work, some forensics work. Roven it seemed like it took some time. But they said they just got this and they're put it out now.

Speaker 4

That's right.

Speaker 3

So he says, new images in the search for Nancy Guthrie. This is from FBI Director Cash Pattel. Over the last eight days, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff's Department have been working closely with our private sector partners to continue to recover any images or video footage from Nancy Guthrie's home that may have been lost, corrupted, or inaccessible due to a variety of factors, including the removal of recording devices. The video was recovered from was residual data located in

back end systems. Working with our partners, as of this morning, law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie's front door or the mourning of her disappearance.

Speaker 4

This is at one forty seven am in the morning.

Speaker 3

We should point out these images in this video and it is out of a horror movie.

Speaker 1

Baby so too.

Speaker 2

I guess a decent number of you listening have probably seen this video already, but it's yes, many of you have these. You have door cameras, you have security cameras in the front, and it picks up movement and it's a grainy, black and white image that you're used to seeing. It is that, But to think that now we're seeing an image of somebody on the front porch of this eighty four year old woman's house in a ski mask, knowing that she was inside a sleep and had been

there for some time. This is terrifying. Now what we see in the video robes Obviously you can't see the person's face, but they are wearing a ski mask. That suggests what robes there is planning. They know a camera is there and they are trying to hide.

Speaker 3

Correct, And people have pointed out the ski mask obviously, the gloves and the backpack. This is someone who has prepared. This is someone who has premeditated whatever they're about to do and have what they need with them to carry it out, including a weapon. I haven't seen them describe. You can look at it right here that he is armed. Is that what you would consider a gun? And a holster?

Speaker 4

Is it a knife?

Speaker 2

Now I can say, who doesn't the authority say, I've seen it described as wearing a holster? But I did see was it Patel? They described him as being armed.

Speaker 4

That's a gun. That's a gun. I can see it right now.

Speaker 3

Yes, in the video you can see that that is absolutely a gun very clearly.

Speaker 4

Look babe, right here in the movie see him walk up. Watch that was actually back a bit.

Speaker 2

So they did release images there are at least there are several images, but there are several videos as well that they do release. And yeah, at some points he's wearing these gloves and he is trying to cover that camera and he does do so successfully with his hand. Again suggests someone who is familiar, possibly with that front porch. Now,

why do you release this robes? We say this all the time, and you said it to me, baby, if that was you in the front when the scheme asked, I would know that was you, I.

Speaker 3

Said, I did say this. Look at first, you see this and you think this is ridiculous. How could anybody know who this person is? They're completely covered from head to toe. And then you start to think about it. If that were someone I knew, a friend, a husband, a brother, a neighbor. You notice how people are dressed, You notice people's build you notice how they walk, and in the video portion that they released, you can just see movements and if that's someone who you intimately know,

you'll recognize them. And that is the hope right now. And two, this is very important among what has been released. NBC News is reporting that the Guthrie family looked at this video, looked at these images and said, based on

what we just described, we don't recognize this person. And after that was established, and police also established that they did not recognize that figure in this video from anyone they've interviewed or anyone they've talked to, the decision was made collectively after retrieving this video to put it out to the public, to hope that someone else might say, oh my god, I know who that is.

Speaker 1

And someone will.

Speaker 2

This is how we've seen this countless times in these cases. Someone will recognize something from that video. Maybe it's even what he's wearing. Maybe it's the backpack itself, and like you said, just the girth, the bill, the gate, something about this video. But this is the biggest break in

this case. It is hard to believe Robes that we are here this many days out and they are this clueless, if you will, And again that's not an insult to them, but to think this far out, with this many resources eyes attention on this case, that they're still saying, please help, we're nowhere.

Speaker 3

There's a lot of questions to your point about how many days it's been that we're just now given the urgency, given all the focus and the resources on this case, we're just now nine ten days into her disappearance, finally finally seeing.

Speaker 4

This door cam footage.

Speaker 3

Now we understand that for whatever reason, the Guthrie family or Nancy Guthrie herself, decided not to pay for a subscription, Okay, but still the fact that it took this long to get the cooperation, the subpoena, whatever legal or it hoops they had to jump through.

Speaker 4

If this video had been out, ah, five.

Speaker 3

Days ago, six days ago, seven days ago, what could it have meant to the search for Nancy Guthrie. That's frustrating to know this video existed and it's only now been accessed to release it. Is kind of crazy, given the fact that it's twenty twenty six.

Speaker 1

Now.

Speaker 2

I won't even begin to try to question the tech of it all. I have no idea where this thing was, how it was hidden, They had to back ended and all that. I am not gonna even try to question how long that process might have taken.

Speaker 1

But it is again rogue.

Speaker 2

It's still kind of you scratch your head to some degree that we are this far out and we are just now, yeah, frankly, getting concrete confirmation that the woman has been abducted.

Speaker 3

You make such a good point because we keep calling this a potential abduction, we find a way to make sure we couch it. Look, we've had police from the beginning say that they believe Nancy Guthrie was taken against her will, that the scene left behind at Nancy Guthrie's home suggested a grave concern. So we've been given indication, yet they've never directly confirmed it.

Speaker 4

And now we see this video and.

Speaker 3

It's for a lot of us who are trying to together what could have happened, what might have happened, what's the most likely scenario. This is a kind of a holy shit moment. Damn, there is a masked man on her front door at our front porch at one forty seven am.

Speaker 4

And look, you've asked about the timeline.

Speaker 3

This is curious that video that has been released, the images that we've seen were all captured at one forty seven am. We all know, and we've been looking at the timeline on this. Her her pacemaker went off about

fifteen minutes later. Is that what they're saying? No, sorry, excuse me, at two thirty, but fifteen minutes after this door cam footage was taken, excuse me, we believe her pacemaker went off, and then shortly after that there was an image a motion detected on a camera that was registered as human.

Speaker 4

But there is no image that.

Speaker 3

We can see or that we know of after her pacemaker went off on the property of Nancy Guthrie, and that is deeply concerning.

Speaker 2

Well, all of this is obviously deeply concerning at this point. But we've gone back and forth. There are plenty of experts out there. Everybody has hopped on to any podcast, any interview, any television interview, opportunity to give their opinion about this case. And there are plenty out there who have flat out said they do not believe this was a kidnapping, that they do not believe it's an authensive ransom situation, that they do not believe it was an abduction.

So here we are confirmed there is an abductor. There is nothing else now to talk about, So move to the next step ropes in this huge mystery. Mystery one has been solved. Stay here, we'll tell you what's next and how we can solve mystery number two. And we continue here on Amy and TJ with the update on the Nancy Guthrie investigation.

Speaker 1

Robe. So much in this so much has been solved.

Speaker 2

Today you can move forward, at least at least in the way the public is looking at this, and maybe even the way the authorities are looking at it. It is confirmed there was someone there at Nancy Guthrie's house that should not have been there at two in the morning, messing with the cameras. That is your abductor, so Robes. Question one has been answered. Mystery number one solved. It is definitive someone was there and took her. How do

you get now the answer to question two? If someone took her, the question is why did you go there to do harm and kill her? Or did you go there to take her for a ransom? How can there be a third option?

Speaker 1

Right? How do you answer the next question?

Speaker 2

Because if you wanted to kill this woman, you could have gone in she was sleeping at two in the morning.

Speaker 3

Yes, I would think she was asleep if her garage door shut at nine fifty that evening, and this masked man isn't seen until one forty seven, Yes, you would think that an eighty four year old woman would be sound asleep in her bed.

Speaker 2

Sweet lady in there sound asleep. So if someone wants to go in there and kill Nancy Guthrie. You go in there and you have the easiest opportunity to kill her and walk out, Why would you do anything else unless you had another motive, meaning kidnapping and ransom?

Speaker 1

Is this really robes? Has this been just confirmed now? Is yes? This is a ransom?

Speaker 3

Or is it an elaborate setup to a boondoggle to thwart authority's efforts into trying to track down a kidnapper and a still alive Nancy Guthrie all the while?

Speaker 1

How can happen? How can the video do that?

Speaker 3

No, just saying that that's how the killer, if she is dead, masked man entered the home and then killed her and took her body and just decided to dispose of it and create this huge mystery so that there would be so much focus on where she could be still alive instead of where her body could be recovered.

Speaker 1

Oh my goodness. Then what's the suggest then? Why kill her? Then?

Speaker 2

The suggestion there that somebody went in and had the motive of wanting to kill eighty four that's a stretch, big stres Who wants to kill the eighty four year old lady? And if you do, why kill her and take her body? And then have to dispose of it somewhere.

Speaker 4

I don't know any of the above. Anything could have happened.

Speaker 3

People can panic, but this seemed to be Whatever happened, whether she's alive, held for ransom, whether she was killed, there was somebody who entered her home with the intent to do harm, period, that has been established, but we don't know who, and we don't know why, and we don't know where she is. And so today, after that video was released, a lot of focus has been on what investigators are doing now, and they are going They were seen going door to door after this video was

released in the neighborhood of Annie Guthrie. Now, look, that is the last place that Nancy Guthrie was known to be alive. An uber driver dropped her off at her daughter's house to have dinner and play some card games, reportedly, and then we do know that she was brought back, or at least the car was brought back and a garage door was opened, and she was presumably brought back

to her home. However, there is an intense search around the area right now of Annie Guthrie's home, and a lot of folks have been pointing to that after this video they.

Speaker 4

Are looking at.

Speaker 3

When you start looking at land, you start looking at the property around homes. It is concerning there was a different focus at this point. Now when you start to look at brush at rugged terrain, you're looking for any leads you could possibly find.

Speaker 4

Where could she be? Where could Nancy Guthrie bee?

Speaker 2

So, without a doubt, this is the biggest development in this case. This is the biggest clue in this case. And this is certainly the I guess, biggest development that authorities have wished to share with the public, and this could be the one that changes this case, without a doubt, and also ropes. They have already suggested that they are getting clues, getting tips, and being overwhelmed, even to a certain degree with how much people have reacted since they've put out these images.

Speaker 4

Yeah, that's true.

Speaker 3

So they actually had to put out a statement to folks who are in the Tucson area to please not call nine to one one, that they have been overwhelmed and that is not the appropriate way to call in a tip of any kind if you are in the Tucson area. They have a crimestopper's number set up for the FBI as well, but they just they were to the point where they had to put out a statement urging folks in the Tucson area to not call nine one one.

Speaker 4

That is how many tips have come in.

Speaker 3

Hundreds of tips they have said, have come in since this video has been released, and the hope is that just one of them will lead them to their person of interest.

Speaker 1

So just went to hop on and give it the update tonight.

Speaker 2

Wouldn't be surprised if there's a brand new update by the time we get up and we all get going in the morning. But the latest, the biggest development so far in the case of the missing eighty four year old mother of Today's show host Savannah Guthrie, Nancy Guthrie, they have released now images of someone who is at that home on that front porch in a ski mask, trying to get into the home, trying to cover upt the camera.

Speaker 1

They have released those images.

Speaker 2

Certainly people are calling in and this is going to be the run rogues. I would not be surprised at all if we get up in the morning and something has changed in this case.
