At the end of the Revolutionary war, people began to deal with the ideals of freedom and equality while maintaining slavery. Northern states mostly put slavery on a slow path to eventual abolition. Sothern States do not. In Massachusetts, several slaves sue under the argument that the Constitutions claims that all men are born free and equal means that they are born free and equal.
