Here Peter transitions from teaching about how we produce fruit as disciples to how we evaluate false teachers. Peter makes the particular point that false teachers make merchandise of the children of God as they prey on their spiritual needs for comfort and hope.

Whether he be living or not, he wants their walk in Christ to be strong.

In these verses we are told how the items in the earlier seven verses should abound in the believer and in verse 11 we are told that if they do we will be given an abundant entry in the the kingdom of Heaven. As you listen to this sermon, distinguish between the three types of faith, understanding that believer's faith is something a child of God obtains, and that believer's faith is divine in nature.
Peter instructs us in 1 Peter 4:1-2 that we are to adopt the same mind as Christ that in suffering we might be free from sin. But what does it mean to have the same mind as Christ? In this sermon we return to the gospel according to Mark and examine how Christ put his body as a man in subjection to the Spirit and fulfilled his duty on the Cross. In like manner we are to put our own bodies in subjection to the spirit and follow after God.
This sermon focuses on the last few verses of the third chapter of 1 Peter. In focusing on these verses, the subjects of who were the prisoners that were preached to, what is the connection between the Ark and Baptism, and what is the purpose of baptism are highlighted. Ultimately, the conclusion being that a good conscience answers God in obedience by submitting to baptism and thus experiences timely salvation.
In 1 Peter 3:1-7, Peter sets forth the need for Spouses to honor one another that they might not hinder the walk of faith of each. Peter does this by explaining the need of wives to be faithful to their husbands that they might be converted and for husbands to honor their wives that they might not shatter their faith. In these verses Peter does not teach on concepts of marriage but rather concepts of faith and discipleship.
Isaiah 53 and 1 Peter 2:24 provide bookends that present the same message. Isaiah presented it as prophecy and Peter reports the events as they occurred, but they both reveal the truth of our salvation in Christ Jesus. By his blood do we have salvation, and by his stripes we are healed spiritually.
The Christian church should not be turned into a political arm or be tied to a political ideology. Rather, scripture commands us to obey our leaders and to follow the ordinances of men, not for the sake of men but because if we are engaged in the battles of this world then we are taking away time and effort from the service of God. Thus, we are to be obedient here in time and focus on our service to one another and the Lord.
1 Peter 2:12 gives us instruction about the good works we are supposed to do. While it can be of some benefit for disciples of Christ to do good works that can be seen by others, Peter encourages disciples to do good works for non-believers in a way that they can behold those good works. In this, disciples should be honest in their manner of living and despite the difficulties they face these good works will stay with those that receive them.
Peter in 1 Peter 2:4-8 and Paul in 1 Corinthians 3:10-16 instruct the disciples of Christ and the visible church here in time to build on the foundations of God. The foundations were first set down by Christ in his teachings and then built upon by the apostles. We are instructed in our time to put away the trivial things that can infiltrate the church and focus on building upon the true foundations of God.
This brief sermon was preached on Communion Sunday at Amarillo PBC. The Communion service followed this service but is not included in this recording. From this first miracle that Jesus performed we get a picture that the New Testament, while coming in the middle of service to God, brings not only something new but brings something far better than what had been experienced before.
The second chapter of 1st Peter is a chapter of obedience. In the first two verses Peter focuses on the need for disciples to lay aside the sins, not of the flesh, but of the Spirit. Peter calls upon those that he is writing to, much like Paul did in the book of Romans and Hebrews, to be focused on the things of the Spirit and their service unto God.
