Welcome to All the Smoke, a production of The Black Effect and Our Heart Radio in partnership with Showtime. M H. Welcome back All the Smoke live on set. Jack, what's good back in l A doing it our way? Trying to man, Man, we gotta I say special a lot, but I really feel like this dude right here is you know, one of the greatest. Uh. It's just an honor all the way from Pensacola, Florida. Man. Welcome Roy Jones, Thank you, appreciate, thank you, thank you. Got you got
some gifts. Yeah, I got some talk to us about what's in these bags. You see the roots switch me up to hook y'all, little too too. You want me to make shine mean, so come and knock. Get y'all doing that. It's all say, it's all the same boat back. We're not. Just know, I just need to like we appreciate that, and we appreciate that we're familiar with them. Um all they do a lot of stuff with legends and another legend that we've found with a class to
so appreciate you. Brother. We also got a gift for you. You we can't take a gift for that. Give a game than you my brother, all the smoke dots story, all our new gears, you know what I'm saying, new sweat suits, We got all kinds of stuff. Man, make sure you'll pull up bombs. Yeah sir, Well let's look, man, let's get to it. Pencacol Florida. Um, tell us about your bringing, man, It was, it was, it was. It was a pretty different type of on upbringing. You know.
I grew up on the farm, so I had the animals, you know, game cocks. You know. I was just one of those little kids that God kind of blessed dirt. You know. People always tell you that God prepares you for what, for what already got ahead, you know. And for me going up, watching the animals have taught me a lout of a box in my fighting, so I would always take in everything because my thing. Man, I ain't get nothing. Nobody really do, really do, but able to have their own way of how they find their
way through life. One of my ways through nature. You know. I had a I had a dope. My pension once basically saved my life. You know, some wild was about to follow me, and people don't believe the story. But the world I was small shouldn't been messed with the woodn't way about to fall back home. Man, the dog jumped up and put it with on the weight on the wood. Help get the word back from following me
more loyal. If it would have felt on me I've been done, nobody would have got me there want to find me all day because my dad adn't got work like five o'clock in the afternoon, so nobody would have found me. But anyway, you know, I always been loyal to the animals because of what they do for me. So people always like how you just no, no, no no, it's not about that's about caring for things. And where you learn it from. God was teaching me from my
observation what those animals were doing. So that's how I learned the game. And that helped me learn the game. And so when you start taking what God teaches you and you put it and you can put it in an actional, put in motion, it becomes a beautiful thing to my my upbringing. With that first, then when I got my teens, I kind of got to well. I
started having no more challenges. We moved back to the city, out of the country and more time and my father being My coach was a tough thing because he was on the seven. When you're on a kid seven, A lot of fathers don't realize that you can't still on the four seven because you don't allow him time to be a kid. So that time not allow me to be a kid kind of drove me to be a different animal, you feel me. So it made me a good animal or a bad animal too, because I grew
up with a lion mentality. A lion of mentality is once you leave in this, you don't go back the line, don't come back home. He leave that, will get there on that and say that's how I was raised up. So I appreciate him for teaching me it that way. I just I don't think we had to be quite as bad where we couldn't communicate to day. It's something able don't communicate to date. It's a hurtful thing in
a sense. But when you know what like I know it, you know how deeply rooted understand Yeah, you understand it, So you can't really fault nobody for what they did. And I'm really appreciative for what I was talking the way I was talking, because it made me into something that I probably never knew I could be. Yeah, so that's that's that's really my upbringing. Where did you find the love for sports, in particular boxing, Well, honestly speaking, I was of my My father was my first hero,
but he not. My father played basketball, and my father was thot you was nice to you thought you thought was like I realized it. Never it never stopped amazing me that once I see I taught y'all all, I'm like, you know what you did right back? But you played you played it back then. It was the D League. Yeah, I played against him. I was North Carolina. What you play for? I played for ah, the Bratonton Ducks there so the two thousand two Ye yeah, I played the league.
Yeah yeah, yeah, that was right before I gut went up to the Clippers. But yeah, yeah, yeah, but an't better play, mother fucking Roy Jones. I enjoyed basketball first because that's what my father was playing. And my father was a hell of a shooter. My father was Sydney, of course, but he was damn the averaging four without three point line. You know, that's just how good shot
he was. So I love basketball. But then we sat down once, well I didn't sit down he was sitting there watching the fight, and I realized what it was. It was Audie and Joe Fraser. I think in nineteen seventy four, I'm five years years old. I'm watching it and I'm seeing Mohammed he beat you with his mind. And at that age, already at five, I was a hell of agitated. I can get on anybody nerves. You know that mean, but they couldn't catch me. But I can get on anybody nerves. So I started seeing that.
I was like, Wow, if somebody teach me to use my hands, I can do what he's doing because I'm never gonna get mad enough to you. I don't think me because I'm I don't get mad. I just it's smarter I could eat. So it's like when I teach my fighters now, I tell him my mental to what it was the truth. If you hit me one time, I would you six pack? Yeah. They that that's not getting even, that's getting a hit. I don't want to get even. I want to get a hit. Yeah you understanding,
score boy, Yeah, that's where I came from. You were inducted or vote excuse me, in the International Boxing Hall of Fame after you know one of the greatest careers ever. What was that moment like to you? It was very different, man. It was like something we all look forward to, both of y'all. I'm sugar be that one thing, and y'all just pick the sports as well, and it's like we all look forward to the Hall of Fame, and um,
that's kind of icing on the cake. Um, But if you don't, if I didn't get there, I wouldn't have been upset about it. Just it's just it's like I said, it's more of an ice on the cake because the cake is already there. Understand me, career you feel, so it's just ice. And we were with ourselves. We know we're never get done. Were in the Hall of Fame. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah we are. Judges are still up somewhere. Who did you autolize besides your father growing up? Well,
he's gonna sound kind of funny. My first idel was Tarzan, King of the Jungle. Yeah, you got a white duty with all the Africans. He running everything, African running everything. So I'm like, wow, he got to be pretty tough, you know, your white guy. He in Africa, he only running the people. He run the people in the animals like the whole damn thing. So I'm like, I gotta be something like what he doing, but I ain't. I mean, I know I ain't white, but I still gotta be
something like what he is. He had charged every damn thing. That's what he was. He was speaking two languages for everybody. You're feeling. My first idol, you understand, beside my dad I loved. I thought I was a Tarzan Man. Then my second idol was right for man, because I thought right for me it was a bad boy, raf man, raf manet you had problems? Right for man? What's right
for man? Right? It was as a shoulder came over, he was he had a right for he was right for he was like he was like a police pretty much dip in of the area, but anything go on, he gonna because he was right for men. Right. So that became my second thing. And after I grew all that, Mommy, that he became idel. Yeah, I understood as an amateur. You energy career one one and thirteen? What was the grind? Like man, It was a tough grind because most of
the thirteen was really not not losses. But once again, like I just told you before, it was God prepared me for what I had coming ahead. Because when I got to show Olympics, look what happened to me. But I had been through it about ten times in that thirteen so I knew what it was and I knew that it could have. I just did never think that that could happen on that big of a stage in front of everybody on not national but worldwide. You just
don't think that can happen. Well, you're talking about I mean, take us back, man, I didn't mean to jump in Jack. You're talking about the a D Olympics situation. Talk to us about that because obviously we've seen what happened. But from your point of view, what do you feel like? Man, I don't know what really happened. I know that they were supposed to anger about something that took place in the nineteen eighty four Olympicks here in l A, OK.
So because of that, they decided they take it back out on us in eight and I happened to be the person that they would take it out on. You understanding, But the good thing about this is, like I said, God has God always prepares us for us to come best of all planners. So because I had already been through it ten times at the thirteen, I knew what
it was like and my father's always timid. Don't cry, just be cool, don't weary better So when it happened, I had been well versed in how to react to it, because what people didn't understand was my shirt didn't say Jones. My shirts said U s A. I remempresent royal Jones remempers us of the country. So if I asked the food, that's gonna have been on us as a country. So God put on the person who would have handled it the best way. I think, prepared to him the best way.
I didn't know that them teeing to that thirteen was getting ready for that, but that's what they were getting ready for. So when I got to that, I would like, hang't it man? So what idea was after the decision, you're going to back the drug test you and you get dressed and you come out for the ceremony. So when I went to the back, I had to interpret that. I say, asked me if you think he won't, because if he said yeah, the camera on them more. I
got to get that again. If he said yeah, camera don't, now I gotta get again, he said, no, I know I didn't win, but it wasn't me with the church sugar his hand and walked off. I've never seen him Soul, South Korea since that day. I didn't see him again to October this year, really first time again October. He told me that he went through so much trauma and
term more because of that. But he said every time, he said, every time I got in the box of the professional he was teaching school in Korea, he said, every time his students roasted him the whole time from when they heard I was a fighting fight. So he went through more trauma I did. And that's what people don't understand. When you do things, it's the same to me as people who no pull out then and kill people nowadays, when you do things you're not affecting right now,
you're taking the whole chain of people you're feeling. It's not just what's happening right here. You've got kids, you've got fail you've got everybody that disaffects. It had a bad effect on me at the time, but it had a worst effect on him to long long. So he was like when he's talking this year, he said, man if I can I just want to try to arrange some way to give you the medal backs. My family told me I should have been gave you to meddle, you know, because I've just imagined the kids in the
class now you're talking. I didn't imagine as soon as he started trying to teach you something, trying to hear that right here, whipping your ass. No, but okay, well that's I mean, that's that's big of him. Yeah, you know what I mean. So is that something that's gonna happen. I don't know. I think the I think they changed from I able to something else now, but they're saying that they might try to arrange for it happen. I
don't know. It meant more for me that he decided that he wanted to give it to me anything so cause nobody made him do it. He chose to own conscience. Got enough that he's saying, and he said his family told him he should have been given back, so he didn't want to get in touch with Seven years later, Yes, yes, crazy. So you make your pro debut May sixth, nineteen nine. What do you remember about that night that the ring was packed? The guy was he wasn't dressed right to
be a real finale. I was one of these guys that I was very observing about boxing. I ain't care about nothing life but boxing. I'm I'm gonna pay attention to everything with my opponent. Anything that's life, I ain't paying attention to. You can change the color of my room tomorrow, man, I know. But when it comes to a fight, you got on tennis shoes and you don't have a fit at my piece, You're not beat me. You got tennis shoes and you gotta and you don't
have a fear of body. You're not beat me because you don't care now about what you're doing. You have no no businesses beating me, and you get on tennant shot. So this dude come in and I didn't like to wear his trunks. Look, I'm like he he don't care how he looks, So how even to beat me? You can't come here just like all like that and beat me. And I'm an Olympian, Yeah, he in the whole country. You come in here like this, You gotta come show me that you come to beat me. You gott at
least be nice, look nice. And then I know, okay, you got the stuff together, But you ain't got your stuff together. You ain't got a chance. And he really didn't have it stuff together, so and nothing against him, but it just didn't have it stuff together. So I just knew a feeling. No, I don't know how I feeling. But you can't you you you can't win here to night.
What was that training camp like for you? I mean, obviously if you said you in the Olympics, much change, not much change going into your pro career, not much change, Just that you have to get used because when I first started boxing, there was no head get rude, but during my time boxing amateur, the head gear rude came in. So you have to get used to wearing headcare I'll tough is up. It's not hard to wear head gear was What's hard to get used to it is not
wearing it again. But then, not only do you not wear a head gear, but these girls a little smaller than the amateur girls too, So you ain't got on no head gear and the girls are smaller, so you've gotta be a little bit more on points. So remember what I tell you about how he looked. That's even worse now you exactly what are some of your more
memorable um experiences and opponents is throughout your career. My most some of the most memorable situations are It's like, you know how some time you have a game, you don't feel good, but you gotta go the way you feel me. So it's like for me, and that's why I have a hard time identified with a lot of younger, younger athletes. And you know, it's just hard for me because in our day, it didn't matter if you was hurting. If you can walk, you can play. That's how that's
how we understand me. So it's like I understand, but I come from that era that my theater not gonna let me sit nowhere and not fighting what I'm saying.
So it got so bad too. My desire to overrule myself became bigger than his because I'm in One time, i was going to im to the Golden Gloves Nationals and I'm thinking about the ball in py school in the twelth grade of things, I wanted to block a spike and the guy missed the ball and hit my hand and his finger went down smaller than these two fingers. I grabbed it, I snapped the back and one thing happy it went down The phone down the side of him.
I snatched it back my knuckles spoiler that bigger round. I gotta go to National next week and fight the best in the country. I ain't hitting nobody. I'm training like anything wrong. I'm trying. I just did this Thursday Friday said I leave Monday. I gotta start fighting the National Golden Goods. I get there, my dad to wrap my hand for the first fight. My dad looked at my hand and said, God, you know what. You can't
fight like that. When I said, man, thin and rapp in my hand, I mean to say, you can tell me what I can and can't do my hand. I got this not you understand me. He wrapped my hand. I want the hold nat to go to gloves. But the jam finger up. They had been jammed so far. This I got knockdown was shorter than these two fingers. My knuckle was so big it was ridiculous. Every idea hurt.
But once again, like I keep telling you, God, I was prepared for what to come when I beat But I hopped in the first time on the so and saying right was hurt being with the lift, No, not my right hand. I couldn't throw a punch because my right was hurt so bad this one from that Jym'm not gonna from something else. But I had an injury from my first world title fight. I told my partner, Derek smoke Ganner. He was like, what, don't take the fight?
I said, as crazy and as much of a rebel as I am, if I don't take the fight now, they may never give me an opportunity to because they don't want to see me. Y'all know how to go. Really, they don't want to see the real one gown and then you're doing the outside the box. You're not doing what they want you to do. And I didn't want to see you get there. So I said, they're not gonna never give another shot. I gotta go, just like I did that National going to good with one hand,
but not one hand. So and that was it was coming up next. I mean in ninete, your first matchup. I mean unanimous decision with one hand. That's what you're telling us right now. So I'm trying to tell one hand he know it? Yeah, you know, where do you? We've talked to obviously Rest in Peace, Code, We've talked to people like Code Able to take his mind in other places during situations. I mean, I'm sure it happens
to boxes all time. Summer obviously can handle better than other Where do you take your mind when you know you can sparingly throw you know one of your weapons? Well, um for me, man, this is why I trained my fighter to where I trained them. I tried to teach you how to win one hand, even in training every day, because one day it might come down. Then if you hit and hurt him with this one. I got a friend name Gabe Brian. I hit to you all the time. He would tell him that, man, my right hand hurt.
I said, what about your left? Because you know it's okay, so we'll get your stuff on you. I'm saying me because I don't hear excuses. It's not where I'm from. So when you get mentally, when your mental tells you you gotta go or what you do for a living, it's nothing that should stopped it, you know. I mean, so, I've been in several situations where I've had upset stomachs. I had all kinds of stuff happened to me. I had stitches before I found a guy. I was playing
basketball Wednesday. I got your wins got cut wins the third. I wouldn't got stitches on the inside and outside. Friday, I went to win with glasses on, said I fought with stitches in my eye. I'm cut before I go in there. More people want to come out when they get cut in there, I'm going up. Did you bust back? But not? It can't happen like that. So we have to have a mental that's so strong that nothing else matters.
I'm saying, man, that's what my mental when I when I was in my prime, when I got ready to go, nothing that's matter. I don't care if I come. I actually felt better if something's wrong with me, because now I know that put more person for me to happen. Not I gotta think if you ain't not gotta do. I could have a guy figured out. Then's something happened to me. I'm like, dag it, man, it's just God to me. Now you gotta be on your p's and Q still because you don't have this. You gotta do
with just them three? All right, Yeah, I'll go. November nine, an epic upset over James Tony. Do you remember about that night? Man? It was crazy because Jane was he wasn't just a boxer. He was a fighter. He would find people before the fight. He would find people, the way in to find people everywhere. He would he was
he was crazy dude. He didn't really care and he would pound pound the best and to this day probably really pound pound the best out As far as having skills and know how to do at all, he knew how to do everything. But I watched him fight. I ran Barkley, and really I ran Barkle with the beast. I ran be telling her and twice I ran could take a shot. I ran. Was pretty tough, pretty formable guy. He'd beat I ran so bad. I feel bad. I had to go in the back, man, I gotta find
it next night. But he'd been in dude so bad. I feel sorry for the dude. You feel me so I had to go in the bead leave it. I just couldn't couldn't watch, you know, so um when time came to fight him, I was okay. I didn't even see me watching this, because you're not gonna do me like that. He a little bit difficult, he's a little bit limbits. I'm not saying me. I'm not that dude.
I need Joe spot. I'm not saying to you, like you know, I don't like to see it, But I'm not worried because you're not gonna never get to be I'm not gonna ever be there. If you hit me with what you're hitting him with, it's not happening. I wouldn't worry. I just didn't like the fact I don't like to see. I don't like to see nobody get
beat up on your feeling like I don't. I don't like I like box somebody don't like bottoms like with me, Like I love the UFC, but when the guy get knocked out and then get down and hit him while y'all still that kind of bother. Yeah that last one. Yeah, that's the only thing. I love it. But that's that's on that bottom me. Why I don't hit the unconscious personal conscious, you don't get you get me to me that that's kinda So it's like I'm not that dude man,
and like people don't understand. But it's a lot of things I don't stomach with. You fear me. So I'm not the guy that can go out and just do stupid stuff. But at the same time, I'm gonna get you out. So when you can't have to fight him. I knew that we might. I might have to to find him before the fight. I might to find him doing the fight. I might to find him after the fight. But I'm ready to fight one that because I need
to be the boss, and he was the man. To be the man, you gotta beat the men, and that's where I came from. So when I got rid of that's really part of why I mean and my father fell out because I found out that they offered me a fight with James Hunter before and my father said no, no, I got to beat him, not you. You came telling him no, you can make him scare him, and you're gonna say no to you in it. Well, like I always,
I'm keep going back to the point. I'm sorry y'all, but God, I always prepare you for what he got coming coming in the future. For you understand me. I watched Howard David Jr. Senior. I mean, I watched Howard David Senior whole Howard Davis Jr. A little too long before we let him for for a time, Howard David Junior. I think wont the Veil Blocker Cup, which is the
most standing boxing at the Olympics in seventy six. It was seventy six, so I wanted Samething eighty eight, but he wanted seven six, and he was the best boxing at the Olympics in seventy six. Sugar let him want to become CHAMPI Lee or Randolph's springing brothers. Everybody became Champ except Howard. Why because his father was in control of his career. Because father want to go to heat field. Read where you can't let him fight when you read
it because you ain't fighting. He So I observed that, and God was teaching me that. I didn't know it, but God was showing me there from this. I didn't meet a a day to time I got twenty seven years old, but I understood his life told because God was shortly to me and playing, if you, if you go down that road, this what's gonna happen to you. So when it came town once I realized my dadd had tried to fight down one time. You can't be speaking for me because I know in my mind I'm
a better fighting this dude. I need to beat this dude. Why I know I'm a better fighting him. I don't wait either way to you think I'm a better fighting him. I know now, So the second time they asked me, yes, you're fighting he the best. I want to be the best, but you're middleweight. Don't pay that enough to new attention. I ain't on middleweight, I'm pound pound. Yes, I fighting, And that's how that happened. James m was animal, still
is animal. He was how much heavier was he than you? Well, one week a spot he was at sixty eight and I was at sixty year But now, but what else? People don't realize the politics of the game. He was with top rank right, So when I beat Hopkins Um, James torn had went up to one eight and beat Iran Brock. I think for the title they gave. They gave James Tony in days to decide whether you wanted
to keep the super Midway title or the Middleway title. Right, he said, I keep super Midway types for me and but no for the Middleway typle right. When I signed to fight him for the Supermderways, just like he did when he went with a fat box, I signed to fight him for the Superway title. They stripped me at the Middleway title. Once again, when you're on your own, feel that's how they do you. So now all the deals making worse for him because if I lose now, I ain't got no Bill he lost the bark. He
still at the middleway. Bill, I lose, ain't got nothing nothing. I'm rock bottom, but I can't go rock bottom, so I can't lose that. So it just they just made it better for me. Nine nine, you became the undisputed light heavyweight champion. You want to find a w B, a w BC and ib F. What was that feeling like? That was something I always wanted to do, but I didn't think I'd ever get the opportunity to do it
because of the promotional situation. If you wouldn't with this promoter, or you wouldn't did a depth promoter, you wouldn't get the fight. Represented yourself, not a path sometime. But you have talked about enough though, because that's that's that's serious. I mean back then they're doing it now. Back then, yeah, back then they weren't doing it, and even now they don't do it that much because the fact of the matter is if they represented themselves now we get the fights.
We want to see a box but they don't do that. Then if y'all remember, and y'all know because y'all was doing, y'all thinking my time, so at the same time I would so it was so bad with me that I would get on TV after the fight and give you my phone up if you want to fight, that's that's how bad I wanted to wat you best. That's pre promotional. You don't want to prove out the busins. Ain't even to kill them. I just want to get the best. So if you thought you could so. It was a
guy in Germany, Darius Miklechki. The w BO was new, he had BO built. If you're offered him, I mean to come to you, not sit to fight me. He said, No, I got someven dolts that want me to take myseven dolts and go to Germany to fighting for his one in his in general, he lived. You think what happened to me? I just went to different and got robbed. You think I'm gonna do that again? No, So if you really want to smoke, come get it right here. I got seven of them, I got the bills. Yeah,
what I'm coming to you from. So people always talk about but they don't they don't tell the truth. I ain't definitely done nothing. You know, even I find I shouldn't have fault. I fought just once. I once I put my name on there, you fight. Take us into the walls with Antonio talking, well, the first one is like, what happened? Was I beat when he was an ambsious He went off on we never let that go? He know that goes? Yeah, I know, honestly, I watched the
whole he went on around page. He got his life back together because of me. He got a life back together though, because he realized the dang I was saying him. We used to have a good competition, and look what he did, so I can make some of myself. So I really was his hero for the longest time. So because he atalized me, I just became his his own
is real talking, you fear me. And so the first fight was tough because off I'd lose twenty five pounds of muscle, but I still managed to beat it because I had to do what I thought Bob it Simmons had did, which was when the heavyweight title didn't go back after that and recapture light every time. But I think Bob Bob Simmon didn't win the light heay with titles after he wanted Heayway title. He hadn't one livery
great title before he won the Heavway title. Then he lost that, then he went down back and won the light hea with title. He didn't win it, go and win every time and go back and regain, so I thought that was he did. So I wanted when the light here with title, when don't here with title, didn't recapture light every time, So that's why I had to fight in the first time. The second time. I know my body wouldn't real it back together, but like I said,
my my main flowers, I don't duck mat. So somebody said, he give your hard time. What you want to see what you mean when you say your body went back together. My body lost twenty five pounds of muscle. That takes a lot of He found out when he did the creed moving and then he went to Fall for North he had on and just beat the viper or because he had lost the muscle day game making that creep move don't move whatever before I think it was he
did rock at six something. Anyway, he found the hardway that when you lose that weight, it takes a toy feel so second one he won third one. It's cool. I try to bring my father back to hopefully that would have mended the relationship, but it didn't. So that didn't work out either. But he's not a bad fighter. Don't get it wrong. I don't take that from nobody. But what y'all have to understand. What people to fail to realize that that it's not about a team that
can beat you. Anybody like like a team that you'll on championship teams. A team might beat you on any given night, but who the champ of this deceason? Right? So for me, anybody might beat a given night, but who donated that? The ain't Twitter years conforts It's not about that one given night. Who can If you did to beat me then when it dominated for twelve years, Okay, I gotta take my hat off. You might be better
with me. But if you can't go beat me and go down there Twitter years like I did, keep the people entertained and want to watch you fight like I did, you understand then you ain't doing what I did. So every championship team, I mean Tampa, they want the Super Bowl as they had losses in the team, the Lakers, everybody when y'all win your Santorini wherever you was, when
you'll win the championship. You have a few games loss, they can beat trying to given night, Yeah, but they're gonna beat in the seven game series because you're the better team. You understand me, And that's what's gonna stand up when you get to the end, the better team.
You're gonna win that seven game series with that mentality, and it kind of makes you easier to put that behind you and go on to the next fight, like with of course, yeah, of course, because I understand and I know that the sacrifice I've made, I may have had to take a hit full of because that was a big sacrifice. Nobody had went from middleweight to have weight in a hundred and six years, you understand. I mean people say, oh, that's good, but sugar rops some
better robins. Some collapse trying to win the head Light Heavway title. He was a fourth seven pounder, but it collapse trying to win the Light Heavway title. So old, I mean, really, it's hard to find a person that was able to dominate from as far as id I went from one fifty four to heavy weight. Nobody ever did that before. So I will tell you, Oh, there's some pound pod pound, poud no, how many I'm covered as much weight pound for pound as Roaldy, none of them.
Nobody never covered that much weight. So I won't say the arguer for myself. But it's like, if the proof is in the world, fact don't like and nobody covered that much weight? What did you do to Felix to retire? Well, fittish was He's a good dude. He's still a good friend. I'm just keeping it real. You brought me, I don't dislike nobody know what I mean. And I just knew
that he was too small for me. You know. It's like you gotta you get a six or six forgot in the post, and yeah, and that's what that was. He's just a little smaller. He too small for me. You come to one sevening, but you till you still too small for me, so you know, And I kind of knew that, and I just after that fact, I tore it myself and this um a week in the hand before the fight. But I still know here too
small for me. So I still if I can't beat on one hand, something wrong with me because he's too small for me. For the seven nock guys, which one was your favorite? Um, it's a lot of knockouts. Well, I hate this coup to dude get mad at me every time I see it, But I have to say it just with the truth. If he getting mad every time, man, and I don't mean nothing, it's true, but not against it. But he getting mad at me every time. But my
favorite knockout was the one against my tear Griffin. Yeah, the second right, because because of a high all came together. You know, it's just a crazy situation. And to come back and redeement in one round like that was pretty spectacular and was different because I told him night before what was gonna happen next day? Yeah, I thought the only thing what happened if to go reef around that. They just qualified me around nine last time, as I'm
just gonna refight around now. Ain't gonna take y'all through where I want through eight? This time? We're gonna straight back around now. And that's really well. I mean, if man take you that the day before to fight with the take, you know, the pressures of chasing, not necessarily chasing, but just having an undefeated record, you know, Floyd was able to deal with what was You were there at one point? Did you? You always obviously just looked at fighting,
but was there to keep the streak alive. Obviously was important to you as well. Let me tell you different about it that Florida did a great thing because Florida's a marketing genius. He was that old to the max, and he did better than anybody you ever gonna see do as far as marketing himself, because he took a different approach than I took. But everybody's in time to take their on the probect And don't get y'all get a Twitter Florida bead dude, fight it behind or not.
People don't. People don't understand. I ain't gonna say he's the best ever, but he up there. Do you know people understand? People don't understand that. They said with pack almost yeah, but Peck, I felt them bees, Pack, I ain't running on the bees, you know what I mean. I mean, I'm standing his almost hurt, but it ain't. It ain't the same you got outside looking at as
his inside feel me. So I thought you should have fought them earlier, Yes, because I thought pack hours that are hot and I thought would have been a better fight. Had to found the three years earlier because Peck was on top of his game. But still when he fought him, he still made Peck like you made Cannello do. Connello felt that things kind of stayed onf for him for a while, you feel me. So it's like you can't take away from his boxing skills just because he don't
do it the way you think you're doing. The boy can fight in the neck and fight, you know what I'm say, man so, but you don't get fifty and know without knowing how to exactly exactly. But so for me, what really pissed me off at that Monteil Griffin loss. You just seen him robbed me and the Olympics, and you're gonna take my own on thiss qualification. Wait a minute, now, I just seen been a passants a hit Danna Rose in black and the referee after y'all stopped in the
same day, y'all just qualify him. Then I see just a Ferguson hit. I mean not reading. He test Ferguson twice while he was on his knee in the State of Washington in d C. And you was over that y'all didn't just qualify him, but he's gonna do that. Just got robbed up a gold medal. The Olympics qualify him when the referee a referee to say stopped was a bad back, the man nable five seven, the man on the ground, I don't know what the man squid down?
What the man doing? I told my coat was left round, But I don't know what you mean to do one. So I tapped them things gonna say stop. Refree said, okay, I guess you must not be considering him down. So and I still didn't him hard as I could. I hit him again. So he went down, and they just qualified. So that old man a lot to me because he did not just qualified. My problem never would have lost.
He sold it though I'm putting in my mind. Of course, of course they're not hit him, said the sacrifice, but he did said and that was a hell of a way to take away from a guy who represented this country and got robbed one time. You feel it, really, that's what you're gonna do to me. I just went outn't represent our country. You saw robbing me over that, and now you're gonna take my away from other pro that's a hurt for fitting, bro, But that going to
show you that you gotta watching. You think they called it only to kill all the team, so you know, so it made me tighten up the second fight. What's your mental approach? Obviously that was a different situation. But after a loss, I mean, like, we could take losses in our sport and still be okay because we played. But a loss in your sport is a is a much different how do you rebound for those? Mentally it's really hard to rebound from our loss, and our sport
is very detrimental. That's why I tell people all the time you find the undefeated fighter, you gotta first teaching how to lose, because mentally he don't know how to loose. Mentally heard of it broke as hard to break a person ain't never been broke. Now once he gets paid the loss for me. EA's like ride a motorcycle. You have a motorcycle, Rick, If you're gonna ride a motorcycle again, as quick as you get able, people to get your behind and get back on another because you'll get afraid
to wrap one. If you sit back and think about I hurt you and how bad it did you when you're head. Now you're gonna be be skinny on it again. Now you may not never ride another back again. For me, when when it happened to me, I was like, Okay, that's cool. I gotta go again. Then they have him again. Okay, well I still gotta go again. You understand me. So it's like, I'm the type of person. I feel like I was supposed to fight to the end. So I'd
rather be knocked out than to lose a decision. Because I lost to hit the man, I still couldn't get more. So not me cold. I know I shouldn't want and that's how I want to go out. Yeah, I wish moboxers had the attitude. You know, you see a lot of fighters these days. Man, we didn't watch fight. They're looking at the corner like I know you see this. I know you've seen again with where the toil is.
I don't want towel memorable ring walks. She once appeared in the act the Radio City Auditorium and the text drawn by Red meth Man, let me explain something to you, HBO who also made me, helped make me help the world get to know where John Drene was. But they really messed me up. That particularly like because they showed movies with Kerson and all kinds of stuff after Now at the seven o'clock at night, this boxing. This is the first time ever, not mard you this now, first
time ever that rap music was in the radio. See the music hall, the first time ever. You see the music hall. I've never had rapping it before. That was the first time ever. Also had Win in Houston, a singing gobless America. So you got such a big night and you're gonna mute the audio because of lyrical contact of rap music, but all the who is you played with all the bad rical continent once again, I'm gonna
get the short and the stick. And that was the best ring interest that I have seen to this day. Me met and red all dance and come over. You don't get better the audio because y'all were about the lyrical content. What more can they say that that the movies y'all paying out from something, ain'tthing saying it's worse on the movie you feeling. So they co complete there. They completely wiped out the best ring interests of all times.
That if it would have been, if you could have heard the lyrical Now people still loved them wrong, But you could have heard it and really felt what we felt energy. You would have felt the whole energy of it. You missed the energy because they wouldn't play the lyrics
the lyrical content over the TV screen. But and the second my second favorite win though, was I didn't want to put on the organ I think brand Jordan's and Nike head sponsored the fight for me important that I came about the flow and I had the girls dancing. I did one of my own on songs. That was my second paper. You were a team Jordan, right, Yes, what was that experience like being able to cross from be recognized for your greatness and be a part of
that brand Jack's part of that brand? Yeah, I know, I was great. It was great. Great job. Wait where y'all made him tell you something? Both of y'all to understand. I wiped both of y'all for a long time too. That's that man. I enjoyed love both of y'all. Y'all got to know that man up most respectful both of you. So,
but yeah, it was for me. It was good because for me, Mike was one of the better basketball, better athletes visity over the live and for him to come and represent and understand that I represented that to him as a boxer, but it was a big thing, you feel a minute. So that was really huge and I really respected him for that because at that time, boxes
really weren't getting no deals. You couldn't get Nobody wanted to deal with Boxes because of the promoters or because of the bad name most of them have, and you know it was it was different. So for them to come get me and give me the opportunity was a beautiful thing. For just you were called the best crowd you ever fought in front of and just a two part question. Obviously you're so locked in. Do you play off the energy of the crowd? Are you in your
own little zone? This crowd is probably I was gonna be my hometown crowd because every single person is invested I win. We all in other crowds, you know some place I had eight or some places now, but I was a few that want the other guy to win at home is natified. See IA say that hate thing on tap so and it meant a lot to me because I know what it means to those who want me to wine. That's the big though. Are the ones I fight for? Uh? The most. Most people be really
locked in. But when I found in Mississippi, I called Jeff Lacey in Mississippi and I was fighting. I was living old. I think it was about forty. Yeah, but you can't tell them and see levet hood caause I got this levet hooking the game. I'm the best hooker I ever touched the game. Can't come to think that that's what they So you can't tell you can't come to me with that nick because I think I got the best. So it made me really tune in on it,
you feel. Use. I was kind of tune in that night, and I never forget I was fighting him and I dude said something to him. I think I did something to him and doing no wrong, don't don't trap him in that corner, and he begged off. I said, you told him right. So I was so into the crowd that night. There honestly everything going on in the ring. But I also can hear people outside. You did what I would do was or placed a couple of my
guys coach to the ring. The guys I knew, they knew what my playing was and we all I would listen to them talk because if I ever got to a situation where I need anything, They knew what to say. They also kept me up in tune what the time was. So if I had my two guys, three guys, and I knew exactly what was going on, that's all I would really hear. But Lasy fight because everyone was a little smaller, I kind of can't hear everybody. That's crazy.
I remember when you called Calza give me the breaks off. It was I had no idea that if I was gonna be that bad dog. I can't did because Calzack is not a power puncher. He's a volume puncher. And time you go try to go out a guy as a volume punch with power, you're gonna get beat because he gonna that long. That's just what he was. Yeah, and Jeff was at his height at at that time. But that one power shopping the left hook a gonna be enough and you ain't gonna hard to hit him
with it. You know the art of trash talking. All the trash talk I learned from hummad Ali. But the all the trash talking is like, you gotta know what you're doing, whore, you're doing what you're doing with it? Because I only gotta beat one time trash talking, and I'm gonna tell you who beat me trash talking. He didn't beat me trash talking. But to me, the all the trash talking, everything that takes place before the five happens.
So when I see you, if I know we're gonna fight, I'm gonna start missing on you, understand me from a traytop. Start that right then. If I'm gonna start playing a game with you, gonna start that right then. So when I fought Joyese, he came to the press conference just like a Pimp'll canna be a little bit y'all, like he got me. Because I wouldn't prepare for that. I said, okay, okay, how much he is? He was six pounds. Yeah, So he he got in with that. But the next day
I prayed to get back at it. And next day his coach came on the scale, came on the on the podium what the skill was, and got right in my coach face talking stuff. You know, he was spending his face too. And my coach is a retired, uh notary guy, coach Alter Merson. You're not gonna get in his face and say nothing. So soon starting to get in his face all the stage on the goals to the hospital. He goes, hey, I needed something to turn
the thing back around. Yes, yeah, I snuck off the stage, went around back, went back to what John rees was because everybody was nervously But I went into a panic because of the fight. I say, don't you worry about nothing, and nobody gonna touch you because you're blown to me tomorrow. But I had to get him back and he had got me the press cover with the little pimp, so I had to go see that tune to put me back in charge again. So I was. But most people I beat him talking to us, M Yeah, you can't
teach that. You gotta have that. Yeah, A lot of people ain't that confident to talk ship. You know what I'm saying. You gotta be willing to back it up. Preparation gets you confident to be able to talk, be prepared, and you were to back it up. You know, I can't back it up now. I already want to hear it. When did you decide to get into music? Man A big way? Back in the early nineties, I had a group called pg Ready PGS. I love music so much and music was so inspirational because for me I used
to go even after training. Sometimes I would go in my room and turn my music on and work on what I learned and training that particular days. So I was able to put the two together in a sense what it made sense for me because I love music with boxing. This rhythm to me. But also when you think about it, Mommed Ali said the bar high because he talked, he rapped. He just didn't do it the music that was afloat like butterflies. Think I could beat there to come with muhaddie. He did the rapping, he
didn't added music too. So if you're gonna take what he took, what he did and raise it more, then you gotta do more. So take that rapping here doing and put music behind, go all the way with That's what I did. Remember, So men you did Suf made millionail shout out the rung, but you were trashed on that said, y'all go look it up. I think there was an old five or old four around that time. I was with the pacers around that time. Y'all must have forgot. How did that come together? Me and Hodge
rapper Hodge wrappers rapping from the jo. Pretty pretty good, dude, one of the guys I think should have been much more us forever up in the year. But he has a man unlike any other that I've seen when it comes to writing. So we kind of sat down, put together some of my facts. I figured out how we're gonna make it work, and the concept came they must have forgot, you know. Like we sat down and he
would better at the writing part to me. So I would write the facts and write things I want to say, and he would put in the cell fores and kind of got to get and rooted and man came out hot. So the second time me and put it, we wouldn't did the second one, but this one I don't want to leave by by myself because I feel like you almost forgot. It's a big statement, but you can't put it a lot of times where people make their mistaken music if they think about themselves and stead think about
the consumers. Right, So like my ya almost forgot the first one. It was more about me, But now when I redid it and it's more about you almost forgot. Anybody sitting second one and can mean it. So me and something Marvin Baglet on the second you're on the second one. He got a nice verse two years he can go, but also the second I want to make it with because it's such a good it's such a good statement. Y'all must have forgot. You don't get a phrase.
You don't get much better than that, because even y'all, y'all go back to your high school and you'll almost forgot what I'm saying. So we go there. You didn't be a career you you almost forgot what I used to do, you know what I'm saying. So it's a statement that's gonna live forever. And when you make songs out of statements that are everlasting, those songs don't really die. Right. We got we got a guy we just partnered with Forgotten Seasons n v A and that that can be
his Uh So yeah, that's good. Off on me, Bro. Final fight was back home in teen and August, your last fight. You finished six, six wins and nine losses. At the end of that night. What was the feeling like knowing that was your last fight? It was a bay. It was a very bad feeling because I thought I was gonna fight forever. I don't wear at that time. Uh for the eight I think, damn the man. So it was a bad feeling up because I just felt like, no for the seven, for the seven, I just don't
want to give it up. I want to give it up. But I knew that for me, it seemed like if I have stopped, I was just gonna go sit on the couch and get fat. And that's what I did want to do. So I continue to go. Give me a reason getting shape, the reason to stay and shape
and take better care of myself. So you see so many guys they stopped it, being like y'all themselves go, ye know, man, it's bad because y'all didn't killed somebody right now, because y'all still don't shape you fear me, y'all don't let what God gave you just go to waste. Y'all did take advantage of it. But so many people I see slipped themselves go down here, And that's what
I also didn't want to do. So I knew that if I want to get in shape, just go find somebody I gotta getting shaped in because I ain't gon' not so yeah, of course probably can't everything so so but anyway, that's that's what that's what it was. And to watch these guys do it nowadays, like it's getting better now, But for a while there that the skill levels going down, and I didn't see guys that really were having skilled to really entertain and show people what
boxing me was about. So and really want nobody really fight nobody know. It's like, right now, we've got a lightweight division that's full of fighters, a lot of really good fighters, but you're looking at each other. No, you know what I'm saying. So it's like fans haven't really got to look at so you mean, well, let him see you beat somebody up. That's what I was doing. Commentate now, I love commentations. The difference between that and
the ring. Commentating a little different because you don't have to really be in shape. Let your mind work and tell your body. You know in your mind and your body gotta work. Now you buy your magic and work your body, worry about nothing. So commentating I can tell you what he's doing and what somebody should be doing to him, but they're not doing fighting. I ain't gonna tell you what You're gonna show you what he's doing
and show you what's what I should be doing. Too many do, so it's one thing to show us differently and talk about you enjoy a conversation. I love it because it gives me an opportunity to tell people about what I did from my from a final standpoint, not for somebody who never did it before, but telling you all of it. We talked about that before. It's the
experience is the best teacher. If you don't if you're not been in there, you don't know what the real deal is because you've never been hit for you know what I'm Saying's like, like Mike said, a lot of people got a lot of game take your hit in the mount, remember, because they forgot that point in that book. The book intended about that point. The book can't tell you that I have to hit you in the mouth, then what you need to do. That book gonna tell you that you take that punch in the mouth for
you to learn it. And that's what people miss. In commentary, I was thinking when we found out we were gonna have you as a guest, I was thinking, obviously very skilled tactician, but also that the style you fought, if how well that would translate to social media these days? What is the power of social media and what kind of You're already a monster, but could you imagine what he was doing. It was on social media. It would be insane knockouts, everything going viral. Nobody never seen people
do the things. That's what I want your hand, how you beat? I mean, it was just what you did at the TAVA. He's gonna try to do it. They can't do it, better to me to knock them down Tony to. Yeah. So it's like people don't understand. And like I tell people this one. You know, one of my favorite point guards is Chris Paul. And reason I like Chris Paul because you see these guys do all this and one stuff on the court against these guys don't play basketball. You see Chris Paul do enter team
get the best of the best. You fear me shout out. He's doing things that people get the best playing right now. He doing it bringing out in game cap in the payoffs. He don't kill so your family. So for a person to be that entertaining at that time, you don't do that. Then, like you see guys do stuff in the gym, but they're not gonna do that in a real fight. They're afraid to try. This dude doing these things and gags
and playoff games, you feel DA's what means something. If you can't do it, then then already killed you can do it because you can't do it when it counts to make these people be that whoa, they already killed you. This dude do it in the game. He's just playing what he do it in the game. And that means something me because for me, my goal was when I watched my Allie and Sugary Leonard. These guys entertained you. Whether with the foot speed or the hand speed or
even the head movement, they entertained you. So I can't be an entertainer and take you further than they took you. Then why my boxing. I don't want to just be another boxer. I want to be a guy that they said, or we're fighting, everybody put everything that we gotta go see what fighting. Don't know what world might do tonight. That's how I was feeling. That's which is what I'm trying to tell you that those other guys they can't do that. They make it look and bet me one night,
but they can't hold that crowd like I can't. I get it. They cried and care who I was fighting. They come to see because they know we're gonna do something that we're not gonna forgive. Right, We're gonna give us a moment somewhere. We're gonna be right. We know we're gonna give us something that's just who who straight uh November, you step back in the ring, Luke bench and something. Nobody felt like it was his two uncles
fight at the barbecue. But to me, it was seeming like my two favorite boxes in the world are about to fight. Like I'm excited about the idea, but I'm just like, I don't want to see these motherucker's hurt each other. Man. So thoughts on how that all came about and what made you get back in the ring before you start. Oh, let me just just let me say this. I was worried I will too. He was gonna say, Hey, we was gonna say, dude, O, hell uh whip pounds here to me? Really hear it to
that to me? But he twenty pounds here to me, he ain't screwed on type. You know what he might come here and do. Then they say, Yo, that's smoking weed. Before you come out there, Love, you don't know what you're about to do. You understand you're on the web. May happened. So when I heard about it, I said, listen, listen, y'all can't be out there trying to kill each other. What else do you know? That's all you know? What
else do you know? If he tried to hit you like he's gonna be trying to keep that's all he knows. So first time he'd been a chest, I feel like I want to keep us. If if I had to go, like mom, you sud I should have did I did? I ain't think he pushed that this Still you stole it down a nob bro, I ain't stole down the link.
Then I get in front of him and I see him doing or to hear that I thought I thought he stepped all over in a minute before he still a fast, still slipping all my stuff, and I'm right now because I gotta be right just in case he gets wrong and we're gonna get wrong. Still fans all the way, man's here, any point that here? Then I think I hit the left hook or something. We got close and he took a glove en list up my face, I said, there is some of the I see you, Mike,
I see still got game. I'm good, And is he gonna do to get night. Ain't doing the more cause they get they're gonna get bad. You know what I'm saying, called this dude, this dude, he first of all, he's still too strong, he still got all his old tricks, and he much harder to hit. And now you ever thought he would have been what I mean, that's what was surprised to me. I thought for sure, he said. I listen, I teach guys, a man with his head just goes to the face. You're posted to kill him.
And I'm thinking he ain't gotta chick my hand too fast. Man, Mike's stipping my stuff so quick. Ah okay, I see what you might test. I remember the interview afterwards. Are you looking at him like like, come on, bro, we ain't doing this a game my hip? So three days, bro, I'm doing them days. They ain't got nod you go back and work out forward game or two. You'd be like, man, I'm throwing them day do it? Ain't like this? No moment My reel is hurting them three and three and
for every time. Then I gotta crap myself. No nothing, nothing that ain't him. Enough of that. Subscribe Mike in a few words, entertaining, crazy, funny, deceptive, because he's everything everything you think about Mike User the opposite everything you think about me, much more intelligent people, very intelligent, you know, a very very intelligent guys. So that ain't you're a good dude? May he really he's really deep downside, he's really good dude. We got a lot of bad reps.
But you're good dude. You're way more gentle than people think. You know what, but you also but now he do have a switch your snap and he goes when he ran a good my damn face out, son of and always hand you're cheating. Anybody said, you gotta be chea wee what you're cheating for? The legend is you played the basketball with sweet Pea. Yeah we're be Sweetie team, but not sweet He could play and sweet people. All the vision one players on his team ain't had none.
I had to vision two players. You co players. He bought a whole stage. What was that great? Yeah? The late grates people now that was a bad dude to people don't give him enough credit. And he didn't care who he falls. He came from the same time I came I come from. We played King of the Hill. If you're the best, that's what it is. He didn't kill He tell him, don't tell me who is Tim, how much you're making what we don't need to be And I'm saying, don't worry about who was on the side.
That's how cool he will be. But anyway, he was a good basketball player. He always talked and always talking, always talk. So we set up a select to gain HPO article, the late great Article. One of my favorite people I've ever met. He made my HBO tenure way better than el could have been because he was an angel of HBO starters as a mayor, room dude and worked were all well twin executive black dude Artor Curry died probably ten twelve years ago, but he was one
of my favorite people of all time. So anyway, Arty was in charge of relationships. In relationship between HPU and the fighters. He did the human relations part. So he set the game up between me and Sweep. Three people on this team the post of colasp All paid for the thing, and h we got Lon. So in the arena data they they he had like I said he had like he had pretty much a Division one team and I got a jew coal team. Know what I'm saying, But I mean, my guys probably play Boy together because
we played in the city league. So his guys they just all could play. But they play together as much as we did, I don't think. So. They led the game for like three quarters and last quarter got about three minute stuft to go, they were still they let us but like fifteen for the whole game because they complete and sweet people in bed either So, but the last quarter my team were known come back in the
fourth quarter. Last quarter they left big Ail open and big people don't know big Al, but Bigail was a little short. But I thought, you know, big Ail was kind of gott ahead of shot that he could have been head. He had the right guys, he could have made it to leave because the dude could shoot the ball better than not people see walking in the face of the earth today and we all know people at home like that kind of guys, you know. So he came down and left open. He hit one three they
cannot miss. He came but down the left over here another three, they cannot miss. The came down again. I said, they left over third time. I gave to him here another three. That's nine points. And from now we just put both dog. So we came at the last three minutes of the game and we won the game. But it was a great game. He had a better team than I had, but my team had played together more. Yeah a game, mad game defth handed bright hands for people do it all. Yeah, as we be ever real game.
We had Dion Sanders and he once told us about the day he played football and then flew that later night and played baseball. You played basketball during the day and far that night talk to us about that. Well. I was seeing Dan the Bowl Jackson do that. I was like, no, people not going to expect that a boxer can do two things and never thought a box can do that, but got number jack. Every day i'm training,
I'm sneading off playing basketball anywhere trained. So I'm like, I know I can do this because I do this every day. I grew up doing this, So how can I not do that? You feel me. It's gonna look strange to people, but this is what I do. If they if the gym boxing. I'm hoping and I hope every single day you feel min is that this is nothing my body or not you too, But to put on the stage they're gonna say, no, you don't do that. Well, since I'm not with big tample Motors and my own guy,
I can do it. So I went in. Now, what was impressive, by the law was the guy fought Eric Lucas. After that he went on to become the WC Super Theweight champion and he had a title for three years after that fight. So I ain't fighting on garbage, you understand me. So I'm just thinking, you know, even watching you know Darren Williams fight, how you gotta be in shape to be a boxer to go play basketball. I should beat your legs up all day and then box.
And that just credits to what have what great shape? He was saying, how many rounds of that? I mean around level? I think they stopped in the level round. What I won't fight? He took a good punch to who you following these days? In the NBA, You've got players teams. I followed more players than I follow a team. One of my favorites is uh, DAMNONO. I like Damn a lot called Damn big time Dame show up. I tell you a little CP like carry like Yanna because Yann is a different dog. I like Katie Yan is
definitely different. Animal, like John Morant now he's coming on the scene, you know, like Devin Booker. You know, I like a lot of guys, know what. I like a lot of killers. I like guys killer the Metal. I mean, don't get it wrong. I like Lebron too. I mean, but I'll be looking more for the guys that reminded me at the old school guys going from I like them dogs, you know what I'm saying. I like people that's gonna go out there and no matter what y'all
putting from me, you're not stopping me. That's what I like, you know what I mean? So who you uh? The only prediction for the finals? Um, I don't know. Lek's gonna be hard to beat them because if they can get Devil calls Westbrook when got in the right direction here, animal, he played hard of it, but out they just just
gotta keep him under control. But when you're getting under control, he's something to deal with a lot of I'm a westro fan too because of how hard to play, saying some taking get off offside, off balance a live bit, but his intent is always good and I love his intent. Now, if you can take a Lebron who can help gut him and control them a little bit, and Ady can
be healthy. They still don't be hard to be you know. So, um, Dallas is a team that always have to watch because Dallas has a pretty good team, I think, a better team and people give them credit for and their team is a little different with Luca and prosingles. I'm prosingles is an issue because he's so tall. But we can do it all, I'm saying, and so having them too, And I said, Jayden Bronson ain't bad. And we know how the way Dream ain't bad. They got they got
a good team. Demon has a good team. Utah's an excellent team. There's a lot of good teams like that. So you know, I ain't give the Sunday can come from anywhere, but it's about who has the continuality. At the end of the season, Matrix reloaded alongside Keiana Reeves and Lawrence Fishburn. What was that like? That was good, man. It was one of the best times I had. It was different for me because it was a whole movie. I'm like, wow, rich Adriana movie, you do everything that.
God has been so good to me. Man, I just had to be thankful to God if everything's ever given me, because I never thought I would be a rap or basketball player, none of that in the movie. Guy just never thought of the commentary, never thought so many things that God added on to me. And I thought I got what I was going on because of my faith in my trust and God. He gave me so much that I mean, I never thought of being the Heavway Chamber the world. You know what I'm saying. When I
won my first national tournament. My first national tournament was one of a hundred and eighteen pounds. How are you gonna be Heavay Chimer world? You a hundred eighteen pounds for my first national tournament. I was a hundred of pounds. Do you think I had any thoughts could even look at the Heavway Wrong? No, and now who I am heit with Chamber the world. If you believe and have faith in God, there's no limits to what God can take you. You got a chance to work on Creek too.
Thoughts about rebooting that starting Mic could be Jordan, that that was pretty good, might could be Jordan's a really good job in the movie. Actually I didn't know they had me. I said to go get in the next one. But because you ain't gotta fight coming up February fifth, so I gotta miss to the film dates. I'm trying to see now that they can redo it, but if not, then I might miss it. But the guy, I think
they gotta create three coming up. And I was supposed to go be a commentating out and I love the movies. I love acting, although being a commentary doesn't require much acting because it's what I do for real, so but it still be good. You know you're back. I've seen the fight was the last fight. What you think you
need to switch up? What? You just gotta quit being so much of a banger and use this a little bit more because this will takeular father needs will If you use this to control these, you can go a lot of further than you use this to control these. He'd been fighting me up this control needs, and I'm trying to get into use this to control these, not this. I don't even put you on the spot. But do you think his father is kind of doing what? You know I'm and was father hindering him a little bit?
I don't know. His father is actually a lot of things out of his way. And he talked to him, but he stays out of his weight. I think for a while he may have been in a little bit more, but I think they realized that that's not the right way for them, so he got out. And I think that's why he employed me because he knows that I know. But like he said, some things, you're gonna be tearing my son better than I am because me being around me and his father, they're so long. It's different. The
same with my son myself at basketball. But I can't tell you now. I need to call when y'all tell, because I can't tepe. I'm gonna put you on the spot again. Yeah, you would have stopped to fight if you was sean part of popson. No right, No, A lot of people say that I want to stop, you know, because that's why I said, just a fine line between that and he I can say, you know, you can say I'm worried about my son, but when it comes
to that, you gotta let him be the man. You can't go out there and protect together and be a man because he go out like he want to go out, and no excuse, you got a little go like like you wanted to go out. It might not be what he chose to do. He made it look like he made it about himself. The Pole's that's why I chapped you, because if I had leave because but God showed me that some of those guys don't see it to this
too late. That's why I asked that question of which fight the president that you see a lot of your stuff in bootsings. You've seen Boots fight Boots, Boots a bad boy. Boot shows a lot of my stuff. I see it quite a few guys. But Boots sing this, I still living in low machine cold because has the footwork down paded along with the angles and all I see it. I see myself on a lot of fighters because a lot of guys do a lot of things that they learned from watching me. Um. But you know,
Carnello is a bad dude here. You might stop, but you're a bad dude. You think you think he really that that? He that rows that us. A lot of people have got Cannello on the Is he really that? Is he that what you said? He that? I think he is that? But in my pain, he still got a little bit to prove because he's being some really good father beating triples. You was a big thing, but
he still got a little bit more. He has a little bit more to go because he got to be the guy that has that has some of the qualities and credibilities that flow aheads. If Charlot No, it's gonna not gonna be gonna to beat Yallo, but that's not gonna do it because we're going to see him against
a little bit stick a guy. Give me example, I gotta boo boo boo boo boooo, gonna be Himo, don't go and box traditional boobo fight with smarts because man Junior fight with the smarts a different cult for him. So people like that is who you want to see in fight because we know what we could do against guy the brawls and that that's gonna go out and go to the toe. He can handle that. But that's
not how Floyd beat him. So like the la getting my hard time because he boxed him with this, So we gotta see him fight him by the boxes with this and seem dominate that person. Then he'd be what I want to see him be, which I'm not saying can't. So it's like people get so sensitive nowadays because stuff that you say. But like I was trying to tell people. When Errol Spans fought Sean Porter, I wasn't saying that that's gonna guarantee that Erl Spence can be called can
be Aerospences. No, I said, Sean Porter, what the first dude that's gonna show us what el Spences. They didn't say that Aerospence didn't have the goods. I never said that. I just said, Sean Porter's the first dude they're gonna show us if he really got the goods. And he did that knockdown, that fact was either or sure it might have been winning. But once he knocked, now he took.
He took over. So it showed that he doesn't have the goods to make me even more now I want to see him and tears cough in the m But this did not get in that. But I didn't say who I thought when I still don't know who it's just because I think that I don't mean that either. But I did see him show against Sean Porter that he didn't have a dog in mean that he could put off put it off against a top nice guy called Seanport is one of the guys right there at
the threshold of being great. You feel me. So you beat him? Now you get Now I got a little bit more comfortent than you and your efforts against Cofor that caff For beat Porter a little bit worse than you did. Just done it, Porter, Porter. But styles also make fights. That still don't mean that Corford can beat you. But right now Corfor has the edge because I've seen Cofford more so and I've seen against a few more different, different caliberns of opposition that I see you against. I
was saying that you can't beat Confer. I'll just say that I've seen Corford more and against more different known competition than I see him against. They took out he don't like yours. Come on, man, you know how they do. That's what they're gonna do. You know what I'm saying that shot. I didn't say that. I see that this dude will be the first real opposition opposition that we see that we can judge them afoot. And it was because it was a hell of a fight until they
when you dropped me, he took over. But it was a good damn fight. Your feeling so Davis, bad dude, Bad dude. See what I like about Tank is tain't bring something different? You know, back in the days, everybody has something. Homedy he was a move a box of George was a puncher. Earnest Stables was a puncher. Everybody has something about to take their Holmes had a jail Mike. We've had over here and right. You know what I'm saying,
everybody has something. That division now is full and Tank having to be the knockout guy of the division, he didn't want it with the main knockout power. I see it has two, but tin't got the real knockout power.
That like, if Tank hit when I'm cleaning you, they're gonna have a proper So it's like, I like Tank, uh every now then I think he just I think when he knows he can beat somebody, he probably don't take it, don't lock in his hard But I think when they bring challenges, he locks in calls competition and he got to be careful that he was really doing that. So you gotta be careful of that because if you come in and think somebody is not at your level, you and estimate him, it can get your beat. So
I just don't think. I think you gotta be careful of Other than that, Tanks are really good fighter tanks are good fighter. Uh, it's a lot of guys that we class. For Garcia Lopez, do this, beat Lopez, Loma Um, young guy, Devin hanging Man. So many good guys that we class. But we need to see him fight each other so we can figure out who to cream on the carp good, very good guy, very smart guy. Wins
more with smartness than he does with skill. He uses his knowledge, his size, he takes advantage of his size. And I liked it about Tyson Fur and he's not afraid to fight nobody. The only thing I tell people, like I said, I don't want to see him a music fight. Right now, we're going to heavy division is music. And Joshua was a great fight Fury, And while it wasn't even better fight for the fans, let's keep the
fans into the heavway division right now. If you put us against against Fury, a lot of people think the big the better big big man beats the better small man, and so we leaned toward Fury. But either guy could win the fight. But neither guy's a real knockout puncher, and right now in headways, we want to see knockouts, or at least knockdowns, you know what I'm saying, or at least somebody get hurt somebody or know that somebody can knock somebody in any given tags Wilder, that's a
good fight. We love that kind of fight. Somebody somebody that's that way to happen, that's not waiting to happen. Those kind of fights, those a kind of fight we want to see. If you don't come from you understand that that's what we want. We know that's like that waiting to happen. That's that's what we really want to see in the headweight division. That's what we want to see. Thoughts on Jake Paul me, you gotta get a man of credit. You know, he came out there some beautiful things.
He showed what you can do with social media. He showed you the effects that social media can have on sport. And you know he tries hard. He works hard as a boxer. I mean for a guy that's not didn't start his career as a boxer. He given the hill because you're making more one of the most of them can the smart way. He's you. He's showing you what you can do if you calask two. The God has given you. Now, he's a perfect example every every boxer
should market themselves. He's a perfect example. So if you hate on him some roles, you need to be learning from him. Don't hate the game he play. Learn from him because he's doing some good. Look how much money making any beating others? Two and he's not really he didn't start the thing as a boxer. Look what are you're doing? Show time? You know showtime? Better believe it? Man, this has been great. We appreciate you coming down to
the home stretch right now. So the first thing to come to mind, let us know your mount rushmore boxing. Oh my gosh, Mama egals at the top, Mama Da Mama Daly sugaring up, Save door Sanchez, brother Duran. It's a lot of one that there. But don't polo forma put up? Then stop a door Sanchez. I gotta go look him up on the best Mexican pilers of all time. Let me tell you why. Go look at all the people fight fine, but in a fifteen round fight against
stiff opposition. You look at him around one, between around one, around two, and go look at between around fourteen, around fifteen, he looks identic clar the same identical. He looks identical in between around oneted to and do between round fourteen and fifteen. I ain't never seen nobody to do that. Nobody. This dude looks identical between around one and two and round four and five and round eight and nine as you're doing around fourteen and fifteen. I've never seen nothing
like in my life. That's who. I also got a lot of my game from them, but the best tricks to ever see. Everybody got their things sugar. Then I had the hand speed, and he had hand foot speed and entertainment with the mouth, had her head consistently time I had that thing with the right hand. The Hulk was just busy all the time. Duran had the trickery. Duran was the best tricks that I ever seen. Was just like condition wise, and he wasn't He wasn't flashing,
He didn't have that acceleration that you want. But my gosh, for fifteen rounds standing with there a hunt a mint out fifteen, the dude could do it. I gotta look him. You just told us all the grades and what they had, and what would you say about yourself? I took all of that in packages. That's not taste so good. I took all that and all I took all that in package. You take twelve grades and you take what makes them great, and you put all that in one person cannot be great.
You understand me. I mean, I probably shouldn't say that because y'all know it's better me too, though, But it takes depth current And you said, Reggie Miller with heimples, m hm, shoot the damn all and they just didn't have a hempn steff. But look at Stiff. He took what what what? What? What? What Reggie was missing and
he added that. And because he's doing it so well now, he probably better shoot him because of the conference that goes with But he basically if you look at the basic route when he really is he really he really is a Miller type shooter who was a great shooter. But with him, you understand me, you gotta learn how to take what's happening now and how you elevate them. That's what makes you better, that's what makes you great. If you take a great I mean chocolate tito, he
followed the great late grade at Alexes. Alexis a quail copy Alexe wale stuff and a powder A little bit more condition, a little more acrobatics with it, and look at him. He became quick a hundred six times twit pounder hundred six pounds became great because he followed what alexas Quil did and they got one of these names in boxing, chocolate chol. So it's like you have to take the greatness and figure out how you take that the great today, how you add your to make that
the greetings of tomorrow. That's what I did. I had should warn Marvin had a time of hand and put the rain hom Natalie salth door since yes and listen. I had quite. I had about a dozen that used to watch, and I used to watch them to see what made them different, because whatever made them different, I gotta hear that. That's on the clock. I want what makes them different. Haggler was to consistency with the beneath with the defense, turn her her hand with the right
hand and stop. Mohammad was left to the body level of shot. I got something from some of all of them, but I took what made them them. I sent all those characteristics and trying to put them in my came so that when you look at me, you see all the that's how it became pounder pound You understanding who else you know go through a thirty punch combedition? Roy Jones should writ none I could Roy Jones. Mahama that they could Roy Jones. You said a thirty punch. I
get tired thinking about that. A lot of punches for you. But that's a But what the crowd I want to see was we should We don't? Did it? Everybody doing crazy? They did it? They go crazy. So you gotta you have to give the people their money worthy. They gonna pay attention. If you're not, then you just another box What fights you want to see them? Lightweights get to
get on a fight. Yeah, but I would like to see Whyden Wild and uh Joshua fight just because we always want to see it and they got bad blood exactly. I would definitely to see that fight. I want to see Charlot versus Canelo. I really want to see you Bank versus Carnelo. I want to see you your Bank versus Charlot. I want to see Charlotte versus Bubble. That's a lot of good fights out that that we want
to see. But the reason UFC has gotten so much more entertaining in boxing because the people get the fight they want to say, they gotta go see boxing. We gotta get the fights that people want to see. Good point. If we don't do that, then we waste our time. If someone were to do a biopic of your life, what acting would play you hard to say, but I even big into actors. But I'm thinking Cuba, Cuba Good and Junior m somebody like that used regardless of anything,
He's a great actor, is one of the best. I give him that. Top five artists all the time artists. My favorite gonna be scar Face. It's really hard to say because scar Face scar Face. You know, you gotta understand that a lot of people do their thing. You know, you could do a thing, Eminem do a thing DMX for one of my favorite, um Met the Man. The list goes on so many guys, Juvia. I mean, I just love I love everybody that just can come up and do hit records over and over and over again.
The my guy. Everybody have different styles, you know what I mean, So like the're the ones I like, I'm gonna listen to somebody first it's gonna probably be scar Face, then X, then Meth, then Park, then probably Big. It mean that's even They'm gonna be in enough somewhere. It's just it's so many guys. I listened to all of them because every to have with the I just cute everybody because I just love music. So everybody hit one hand and there that I'm gonna like. You know what
I'm saying. So um morbe what new new new? Like today? Acts you listen to? Of course you like NBA, young boy, that's my man. Everybody like you boy? Yeah, you know I like your boy. So if you I like Jesus, that like, I mean, Jesus ain't new, but I like I like a lot of them. I like a lot of I don't like I list a lot of new music. Yeah I was. I ain't really be on the new music as I having the old music. Five dinner guests that are alive dinner guess yeah, five people at your
table plus you that are alive. Barry Sender's mom, DaLie Walter Payton, Michael Jordan's out of Bear, No sweetness, Barry, it's never a bad choice. I gotta give him something. Looking, they're gonna be the only looking at me, look at me. They don't look too If you can have any guests on our show who would it be? But before you answer, you're gonna have to help us get your answer on the show. About to have a guest on the show. You know a lot of heavy hitters too, and a
lot of people. I'm trying to thank who I would like? You're gonna trip out? Who I want you to say? I think everybody might trip out. Who Larry Merchant? That would be pretty big. I would love to interview him, bro. But now to come think about it, I think Jim Napply wouldn't be a band with two Yeah, yeah for sure, yes, yeah. Man. We appreciate your time. Thank you, Thank you very much. That's a wrap all the Smoke Hall of Famer Roy Jones. You can catch us on Showtime Basketball, YouTube, and the
