Appreciate you. Know that, we appreciate you. We appreciate you. You know everybody know it. Man.
Feeling y'all buzzs. Man, I'll let y'all thank you man, coming from you because you didn't get some ship. Baby. But anyway, man, how are you and how are you in the family holding up in these crazy times right now. Honestly, you know, beer hair grown or whatever. You know, I've been locked down. You know, we've been trying to be locked down. You know, I'll put it in the sky and sometimes that's necessary. Essensils are needed. But you know, honestly, need to be real serious. You don't be a safe
man staying out the way, because it's real. It's fattened, as real as contagious cure for it right now, you know what I mean, they're working. You know, I'm a old school roster, that hard, you know, boiled while I put the orange peels and everybody, you know, drink some hot tea, you know, just trying to stay off the way as hard. You know, take my little man to go hoop at the court, trying to just put some shots up, you know, when nobody there. But just stay
off the way, man. You know, it's got a fine things to do at the house. Man, but I wish everybody Guy's been checking and guy's love, he says out there, because it's real. You gotta stay in the house. And man, if nobody never sat down before, and you know, you just you just sit down, It'll be all right, you know, you ain't missing nothing because no one else could do that anyway. You ain't missing nothing. You mentioned your son,
so our son's got a chance to battle. Hey you if people don't know you, coach, you have a whole program out in Arizona, right, what's the name of the program? Riders. We got a chance, So we got a chance to play. We played at one time it hit like a deep ass three at the buzzer to beat him. But we're one of so we're we're we're one on the West Coast. I don't want to say your team is like two or three, right, they gotta really challenge we go to two to four. We're in the top five. Say in
the top five, I think me too. Right now, though, I want to say, you guys are right underneath us, you know what I mean, on the whole, in the whole West coast. Man. So that says a lot of It was great to you know, catch up and see you there because that's where we kind of reconnected. And after that, you know, we locked back in and sat down and you know, fellowshift, and now we've got some business we're working on together. Man. So I appreciate that. Man,
I appree to share the shoot. Bro, we locked in immediately, but it is we we uh were connected there, you know what I mean. Came to your spy, open your doors opportunity. We chopped up, you know what I mean, share war stories, you know what I mean, and future stories. So we locked it in. We're gonna do some business. I got a story to tell. We got own business to do. But man, you're a real one. So I always appreciate you and raced our conversations and the opportunities
that we may have and moving forward. That definitely moving together. Man. You know, your little dude, though they're hard, they're nice. You've got a nice team and do those don't know, Matt, that's his thing. His team is number one out there, right. He takes pride in his little boys. You know, he's quiet about I don't know, he's quiet about it. Right. So we're going there. We have we all go there. It's hard coaching our kids too, you know what I mean? But I did you run? You know, I solute you,
you know what I mean. My son is a year younger than everybody, so for him to kind of just be hanging with the big boys, and I'm real proud of him though you got a game to game. It's dope being able to see that next generation. I mean, that's what we would see Kobe at two. We wouldn't see Kobe, you know, he would be coaching g we'd be coaching our boys. You see Robert Ory up there. You see a lot of guys up there coaching their kids, and I think it's beautiful, man, man Z bo j Bridge.
I was seeing a lot of dudes up there, you know what I mean. And yeah, I got goose bumpers. You mentioned Kolee. You know what I mean. I was back to back at the Mama's Center, so I had seen him, like I think it was December January or something like that. We're back to back coaching, you know what I mean. He's coaching this girls. You know what I mean. I was coaching my ol boys and we vibe the kickbacks for a minute and we always take a picture, you know, to say something for a minute
in a holly, you know what I mean. That was really my competitor. But you know what I mean, we we we was goocy, you know what I mean? So right, it just it was awesome to see him really give all he had to his girl to his young daughter, right and those girls. You know, I mean, I've seen it in his eyes, you know, like you like this, you have you have a good time in retirement. And I could just see it in his eyes that he loved it and he gave it off to him like
we're doing right now. You know what I mean, you know what made he made difference in lives like we do it right now. I'll get a text right now, teenagers and different people because everybody's sitting at home think about what they love, who did something good for him and they're life Who matters? Right, I'm getting texts with different people. You know what, thanks coached me and I I remember you did this that another, So you know, I feel good to touch lives. That's real talk. Man.
Speaking of Kobe, you got a chance to play with him at the beginning of his career, at the end of your career, and we had we had talked about this when we have sat down at the crib. Tell tell us some of the stuff that went on because you caught a young Kobe and you guys are in the same position right for sure. So my third year in the league was Kobe's first. He came in with KG. Right, they came me together, right, I think so, I believe so.
So my third year was his first. Adie Jones was starting off, you know at the time, and he was an All Star. He was an All Star whatever, fake all star, but he was an All Star, right. And then Kobe Kobe, you know, Kobe, I just remember Kobe, a young lion. You were just like, you know how young lions hunted, you know what I mean, They're like, Man, I can get out there and get me a kill, you know what I mean, Just just put me in the game, Coach. He was over there, Dame. Oh, he
was over there hungry. I just seen it in his eyes. Right. So when he got in the game, right, and I used to kill Adie Jones, I just really really served that guy. So Kobe, Kobe real talk baby food, the Silver Food one, top two and Indy where I didn't want me when it wouldn't even know smoke. I just said, what's up? But that's some whole other stuff, right. But so, so Kobe on the bench way, you know what I mean, Kobe on the bench, wade ready to go. When he
got the game, he was real, he was real. Uh. I'm just gonna say why right, he was kind of wild. But I remember calling my brothers at home, like, man, I just played against the Roles young eighteen year old that's probably out there. I mean, I ain't never played against a young boy. They got it like this. So I'm twenty four, twenty five big boy, you know what I mean to twenty five playing big, you know, jumping
doing all that was he doing. But I was I was grown man, So in my mind, no young boy was gonna you know, I wasn't going for that, you know what I mean that even take it to the pain, we're gonna books to blow whatever we're gonna do. I wasn't going for that. But I've seen the greatness in young right then when I called home, I'm like, man, this young boy gonna be nice. Fasterward too, uh three years later, I mean watching me go to work and I'm doing my thing, and then they trade at him
put him in the game. So his I guess four or years when he get really got on right and something like that, I think Eddie was gonna he got in the game, and he never looked back, right, he never looked back. I started to see him for a fifth six year a league. So my seven eight or whatever, you know what I mean, six sethern eight, I'm seeing We're going at Kobe a big boy now, you know what I mean, period, So we're gonna blow for blow. Then he wouldn't laugh, and he took over the league.
That's all I can say. Without he took over the league, bro, you know what I mean. I know he was mimicking Mike. I grew up on Mike like dudes grew up on Staff and Kobe and all that less, so I get it right. But so one thing I will say is that I've seen him come from that young boy to take over the league, giving everybody thirties, you know what I mean, giving everybody work. So I tipped my hat off to him, But I never really like at the end of the day, I was like, man, I'm too
strong for the dude. So I know we've both got some you know, we got some stuff and me nice. But if I you know, I'm wanting to beat you up, you know what I mean, I'm gonna beat you other in the paint, and you're gonna have to doull teams. So they had to dog team every time. It don't matter if Kobe whoever was on me once I got on eight team, nineteen feet on end. With that being said, I get to Portlands. We go at it. We're losing
the Western Conference finals. They trade me. I had just laid Portland the last the prior three years and scoring. I was there to leave Brashid and all of them. You know, I was a leader. Those are my boys. We had a nice night. I was the oldest dude on the team in my six seventh year. We was nice. We had sup we had two started five. Germaino Mill was a rookie guys season. You know what I mean. We have two star five. You know what I mean. We was real nice. So they traded me to Atlanta.
I remember in Atlanta. So I'm at Atlanta. I'm in the top five in the league of scoring, killing the East Coast. I had been in the West Coast my whole career. I'm killing the East Coast. I remember the code getting thirty. I get thirty. I go to l A Lakers. The next year, Kobe says to me on the first day of training camp, Hey, j let's go one on one. But I'm talking to be Seawan Shack. I said, well, hold on after practice on the first day, I said, all, old man, you know what I mean.
I've been jet skiing, you know I was. I I'm listening to Barty, you know what I mean. You know, I'm trying to tell him that I gotta blow I gotta blow this out. Man, give me about a week or two and get the shape, you know what I mean? And I get right you know here, squares. I didn't really want him one of my full business. So you know, like yeah, he's like he like, he's like, okay, I'm still talking. Shack and b shaw. He double back and he said, let me don't get that one on one. Jack,
just just let me know. I said, nigga, what you saw here? He wanted to smoke? Oh we went we went right now, we went right there. So we went right up to the court, you know what I mean? And uh yeah, he handled his business. I'm out check I can make I can make no sense, I can make no choose. He handled his business five one, five three, five to five four. I said, Man, when I get in shape, we're gonna run that back. He look on,
you don't cooking the guard right. I'm like this a little young bigger here man, okay, come back the next day of practice. I'm kind of man. I ain't gonna lie on man, Kobe says the field. I would only Jr. To guard me for the rest of the year. Not not deep fish, not what's that boy? Uh George Devin, George, ty Ron, lou Roden Harper uh be shot none of them, just ha. So with that being said, we went at it all year. Man, I respect you my saluting. He took over the league and we wouldn't blow to blow
the whole year. You know those times I had to come out of my long sleeve and we get after it. You know what I mean. I don't want to put nobody on glass. But since I wrote, and you know what I mean, I'll remember Diesel Toldy's I think that story is out there. Robert or didn't Robert already put out a story about what Diesel was gonna give somebody about Kobe about some tell us tell us, I tell us, Oh, man, I love you, Diesel. I mean, p Coben Man, I'm
go there. So when I first get to the Lifers, Shock tells me, if you and Covid get into it is Ting's and the locker I saw a shot out of I should have checked first. That's how many days a week you want me to get into it with him? This is three days in the practice. He's like a teen g's up there that. I'm like, man, come on, you're playing man the tens and one dollar fields. Man, if you ever get into it, you're handing your business grabs. I can't believe I'll do the leg and I'm like, man,
these voice is crazy. Bro, my lad, I don't run the fathers. What's good? No, man, good. That's what the fans are. The fans love that ship man be getting these inside stories, especially if you then to tell a story about Shock and Kobe. Man, that ship is dope. We love. He would have to put a cap on that ship for me, Matt ten thous in my locker, right, that's just okay. So how many days a week you want me to play ship with this mother, because I'm going to if it's ten x every time, because you're
gonna do it out behind in a week. I used to do it for the year, but you don't. I've been off the team so fast. Somebody put a lad here on that man. Man, you already know that's a great one. How are you gonna was out of there? Yeah, that's dump. You guys got to share that experience. I mean a lot of people don't know. That was a good time. I was talking. We were talking about this the other day, being able to go back and watch film on you. You know, I mean, you would you
play nine years two? Are a killer? A quick nine? But she was killing you know, mean top five and score and you won the duck contest like you was out there. You really did your thing, man, And although it was I mean, you beat the odds with nine, you could have definitely played more in my eyes, But when you were out there, you were a certified killer man right on, family. I was out there like y'all, Just like y'all. That's why I went not I think
I got out as soon as y'all can't. I used some sometimes used to watch like no, we may we might have put a few together, you know, I mean I came after y'all first couple, you know what I mean? Like, man, that my type of motherfucker's man. Then my type of guys right there? Could you imagine can you imagine him? We believe team he's back at home in the bay nearly knew me from high because Mr Christman used to
pick me up in high school. He was my mentors for my big brother Salute with high school when I was going to the Great Problems and Nellly was the coaches and let him come to practice. And I played two on two against Mullen and uh Martial Onis Me and miss play two on twos. You know what I mean?
It was all up. But yeah, man, I came in the league after twenty my first six in a small Monthit not even not even a go to guy, just like just like, man, I'm gonna get mine, man, you know what I mean, Like I'm getting my my enemy is necessary, you know what I mean? It was crazy, and that's kind of funny. When KG first came to Minnesota, he tells me in the first week, all I want to do is catch lives, block shots, rebound and run the floor. I said, let's call. I said no, because
of it was seven feet with red. I said, you're crossing over you you handle that? I said no. I needed to put up eight to fifty attempts a game twic I'll get double team every night. What you mean, you ain't gonna shoot? He told me, no, No, no, no, no, that's all I'm gonna do. Do your thing. I caught you like Craig in the game, he was young, talking about here blockshot, talk about excuse about four ago, let's go and running get the ruck. Yeah, animated height from
day one. I was like, I got one, you know, I mean it was man kJ. It's a little to you. His passion was unmatched. Man kJ passion was unmatch And we talked. We we had him on the show and we talked to him about you. But a lot you you probably don't hear this a lot because you know a lot of people don't don't really bring your name up a lot. But as far as guys who played the game and real ones like me who had to get it from the mud. But you are eyea to us.
You found that car with Ai, you found that a girl with Ai to us, bro like a legend because you overcame all the arts and you was a dog in the one hand and you had to go get it. And and seeing you do it, seeing hey, I do it. Guys that that come before us, that made all that ship possible for us. So we gotta give your flowers now, man a little much, my brother respect man. That's I mean a lot man, from from from ones that did it.
You mean all my peers, you know, I mean, we're a fraternity and real recognized, real and we know who the real real guys were. The real humors are the guys that may not get that love, but still their peers love them and know what they you know what they did. And for me, I'm play with a ship on my shoulder, you know what I mean, because you know, I let the nation and scorn, you know, out of college. You know what I mean. Uh, you know a lot of soul. Everybody got a story it on, you know
what I mean. But it's like I didn't graduate from high school. My old high school coach felled me my senior year. Granted I deserved some of that. So from there, Mittrister came in my life. Come pick yourself back up. I got back, Rob. What I'm saying is, I went to Nike camp. I'm missing McDonald's game. I got off the radar, you know what I mean. So when I came back, I went to junior college, because you know
what I mean. So when I came back my junior year, my senior year, you know matter I would have came out junior. I don't want to go late first rounds like me, I'm gonna stay one more year. But when I came out, Penny, Penny, Alan Houston, that Naxal, well, everybody you could think of, who is this dude? They forgot, you know, from from a d a I mean cook a few years earlier in high school. But I love that.
I was mad at my coach, you know what I mean, mad at the world on the hoop court though, mad at the will, playing with a chip on my shoulder, you know what I mean. So when I got picked fifth, I remember going to combines. I'm the second guard taking after Penny, you know what I mean. And we're gonna talk about me and Penny story two. We have some nice little bottles though, you know what I mean, respect the Penny, but I'm a second guard taking after Penny.
So in my head I mean combines, I mean college, like, oh, I'll player there. I'm getting thirty and nine, shooting over forty percent from three, over fit percent from two and getting thirty and nine. So I'm like, y'all second team All American. So you got Kyl for Cheney Player of the Year and All these dudes get to combine. You know, I go, I'm like, who, Who's okay? I'm eating? They're not. They're not playing like I'm playing. I'm playing with a
chip in my show. I'm hungry, playing for bread and meat. I tell kids this. Now you know we're playing for bread. Meat means a different different You ever seen a hungry, hungry, hungry dude. I hungry playing playing for bread meat. So I was winning the dudes, you know what I mean. So I gotta picked fifth. It wasn't because of whatever. It's because I went to work. I couldn't went to work my sea year, but I went to work in
the combines. So when the NBA, man, I'm gonna tell you something, it was dudes making all star teams like these little ones to say, now that was my son's these little dude they was. I was killing these dudess. You know what I mean. I was killing these dudes. I remember the Eddie Jones, the Finley's whatever. I got no disrespect of nobody, you know what I mean. I
was just putting ain't know, disrespect. That's the truth. If we're in the same room, I said the same thing, man, You know what I mean, and I don't mean, I don't need to names out them, but they was in the Western Conference finals. I knew Miss Richmond and Drexler was gonna get in because you know whatever. But even when I can, all was a problem, you know. I mean, Miss that's my brother we Wan bl blow. But I was a problem for drex and all the young ones.
I'm serving all that I couldn't get All Star games from now. I'm marriage to twenty four in February. You know that's All Star time. Dude, That seventeen I did, gave twenty nine and they need double teams the whole four games, the whole So I played mad sometimes, like, man, you're playing with me, but at the end of the day, we're bad boys. Sometimes we played with that chip on the shoulder, you know, man, the mediac you don't showing my chip show on my chest. You mean, I don't
even know what it was about. Y'all folks talk about me. Want to do an interview with me after the game? Man, you know what I mean, I'll played with a chip on my shoulder. She just see this thirty four in his heart, you know what I mean? That passion. You know I'm gonna give it to you like that, you know what. But I always as hard as we go. Some nights the double teams don't even work. Doesn't work, you know what I mean? Somebody, double teams don't even work. That.
I'm hop setting people that we learned from Mike. I'm fading away from the double team now, you know what i mean. I'm hopping through that. I'm going before the double team come. You know what I mean. If you ain't talking to me, like if we talked to dudes, you know what, dude's gonna talk back. I'm really I'm I'm really in you now you're looking. Yeah, I remember a lot of my freezes to tell me, Remember, why
do you post so much? Jake? I'm like, man, I'm fifteen pounds heavier than everybody, and I can see it in the guards. They don't want no smoke down your dog. I don't gonna give me ten easy points, mid post post whatever. Bro. I got these threes and the blow by, but I'm gonna give it to them how they want. Because it's too many. I ain gonna catch your shoot five times in a row, you know what I mean? Because the coach won't me too. You know what I mean.
I'm gonna beat somebody up and get some money. M easy, easy money, bang on them. Now. We love that. We Uh, it was funny to Jack mentioned it, but we had happened. I guess you did an interview and then we had happened to have KG and they told the Michael. You guys both told the Michael Jordan's story and that ship was hilarious. Do you have any other memorable matchups against against Mike outside of that one? Because I mean, that story went viral. Everybody's seen it and they mirror your
guys a story. We're dead on each other. It was crazy. Hey, that was spot on, man. I saw that. I was laughing so hard and that was so real and you know what I mean. And I had to guard that me and so KG was just on one feeling good. But I do have another story that's to me. I think it's cool. So this is my first time playing against Mike. Right, I played against me the All Star Scotty people had an All Star game. You were Mike
kissed the floor and then all of that. So I'm in Chicago, We're playing in that Uh, I think he was he yeah, So he set out played that summer. So he comes back. My first time playing against some love in the NBA game. So we go out to center court. They're about to jump or you know, we all go out right beside each other. My first time playing against the Bulls, and they was like, you know,
rock stars, right, So I remember, let me rewind. I remember on the bench, but atould walk out and you know, I'm looking at Mike, and Mike used to tap his toes. You know what I mean, he stretched his hands out real why you know what I mean to do the little you know, a little little Mike for the walk. So I grew up when I was like Ida. So I'm looking at him right, looking at his manners and characteristics. We're going to have court. I remember, Mike, look at me.
I got a bald head, wrist band up to my elbow, like way up here, like you know, he's way way up here to the to the to the body set. Mike, look at my head, look at the wrist band. Look down at me. I had on my own shoes. I had Scotty riders. Look down on my shoes. Look back up at me right and look this way right. So I look at you like it sized you up. He did, But in my mind, I'm like, oh, he probably think I'm trying to look like him. Yeah, I say, well, I said, real story. I said, wrap hold up, I
take off the wristband. I'm running to this. I'm running to the all bench. Take all the wristband, throw it to our trainer. Come back out there. Look at him and we just get it in you know what I mean, we just get it in here. But in my mind, I'm looking at him like you look. I thought he was looking at me like, oh, you want to be like me and Hunt, You're gonna be like Mikey. So I'm a big boy now, I'm like, and no more and no more idols, man, I mean, it's that got
time now. You know, I'm trying to look like But that's a whole other stuff. But that that that KG is the real hoop stuff, you know. After that, like my she it's funny, man, right, she hit me after you saw the KG. And I remember in Portland's I did something similar. I don't really know what you can talk about, but I think I had. I had I had to go back and look at the game. Look. I pulled up some footage and Mike went by me and you know, there's something she but it was almost
he contested it. He almost duncked on she. But it was like real nasty and people was talking ship to Mike and had him on one, so he was kind of trying to go at the bids, you know what I mean. He just you know made him all whatever. Yeah, that was it, man, you know what I mean. The game. I stayed quiet with Mike. Bro, you know what I mean, I ain't gonna live, but yeah, I used to give him some members though. On the load. You know that slam duck chill, the East Bay funk is born that bro.
I've been doing that dunkins like ninth grade, you know what I mean. I was doing that dunk ninth grade. So it was just something from from from way back for me. Everybody was doing Dominique Jordan's, you know, doing their dunks. So you know, one day I tried and got close, so I was like, oh, I'm gonna have that, and then I had it in like a week. So I was doing like people that know me go old school with me. I went to school with me. No, I've been doing that dunk. It's like fourteen fifteen. You
know what I mean. The Boys Club dunk contest, Chris Maulan, when you played for the Warrior Judge the dunk contest. When I was in youngster at the Boys Club, I did that dunk. But with that being said, I just kept it going, brought it to college. You know, I freaked in college. You want to college dunk contest And it was like, okay, you know what I mean. And then you know when I got to the NBA stage, obviously went to a tremendous level. Man, that's just all school.
That's that neighborhood stuff. You know what I mean. I mean he was going to you was going between the legs, and you know what I mean, like you said in in high school and then in the pros you did it. What do you think about the creativity? So you know to this point because all these dunks have been done, you know what I mean, So you gotta come with some crazy ship now to make away. But these kids
are coming with that crazy ship and making away. What are your thoughts on the being a former slam dunk chimp? So I want a lot? Right since nine in three right people been going between lean was Colden Vance Brian, you know, little Brian had been but other dudes, you know, it's going between the legs. And I was like, man, this is crazy j Rich and you know, I just the us. I was like, are you kidding right now? I mean, these dudes, we're just doing some crazy stuff, man,
and still doing crazy stuff. So to me, the evolution of the dunk, Like, so I didn't practice dunks, you know what I mean, I didn't. I didn't. You know, the first dunk comes as a second. I didn't go out there. I don't have no routine. I don't know what else is gonna do. I didn't practice no dunks,
you know what I mean. And even coming up in high school, you know, everybody had to balancing ones and we we dunked out, you know what I mean here on Minor used to go at it in high school and so we dont Yeah we should go out of high school. I mean Southern Cow, North Cow. We we yeah, we had a rowing um without getting said we had practice.
We just went off the cuff. So now dudes is taking behind the back, taking you know, practicing, looking at pro dunkers, taking time, getting the time and getting advice from us, you know, what I mean, and going in the lab and getting major dunks off, you know what I mean. So I just look at it like the evolution is incredible, man, I mean just to go from a simile baseline between the lads two at the end of my dunk contest, so I used to throw it
up to and into my dunk contest. I'm talking to Sean Kemp like me, they wanted to be doing more dunk. I'm like, man, I'm gonna throw it up, go off verb and go between legs and Antonio and David like, man, you're good that out said, Like all right, so I wouldn't did something else With that being said, I look at it now like, man, they go on behind the back, off the backward. It's incredible. Man, I'm at all you know what I mean When I see these dudes. You
know what I mean? With that being said, Man, I think Aaron going went Aaron Gordon won the dunk contest. It's been getting two times possibly man, baby with two and they ain't any stuff doing that to that kid. How you feel about that? That dunk being named the JR Ridy, Like every time I see somebody do it, I ain't somebody to talk about it between the legs, were like, I'm gonna try this JR. Rider like that
that that actual Dunk is basically named after you. Now, man, stay, I'm glad you said that, bro, because I was starting to think otherwise because the NBA don't give me no cross and the bottom man, you know, the real was no man, the real was no doubt, my goodness, man. And look the bottom line, they're doing it way better than the original now, but they still home with the legs and win the Dunk contest in brond at the end of the day. You mean that Dunk has lasted
a long years, man, you know what I mean. And that's me behind you. So with that being said, look I feel I'm glad you see that because when I'm around people, I don't I don't. I don't hear that much. I just hear him saying. So I'm around a lot of key hits and we're getting older, so they might they might just say the East they funked him, and not even though I'm right there, you know what a hundred times say I'm about to do East they funk And I just looked like you're about to do what
I'm about stay fun. I'm like, man, this is a cold game and here for me even though and this okay, Mike, Mike Foster. Look, I just gave some plug. Mike Foster with hill Cress, he'll be a senior this year. I thought six forty five in the top five in this class or whatever. You know what I mean. Uh real nice. I was coaching last year with hill Press, and I'll be coaching getting that year with him. He says in practs, I'm about to do the East by funk. Watch out,
y'all about to do the East by phone. I said, Man, Mike, Man, come on, man. He's like, well, I'm about to do the East by phone. I said, Man, I'm standing right here. You're gonna say that Jr. Right or something? Man, you just don't say, man, I just because I feel like the Bay Funk I've forgotten. Man, I'm a trademark that thing. And be like, man, this is just a JR. Right, Man, you know what I mean? Now? You know it? Just
love people know. I think the ogs, the parents, let the kids know that that hey man, that's such a such he was the first one to do it. And and then and then you know that arn't the direction of what time it is. But that's why I feel like it's so important to tell your story because when people here the kind of ship you was going through off the court and still coming out here and dropping twenty in the n b A with the ship you
were going through. That's why you and Jack are so similar, knowing both you guys, and it's funny you guys clicked before we got on camera, like you got to come from the same cloth. Y'all been through a lot of the crazy similar off the course should and be able to steal focus and go out and give buckets. Man. So I mean, that's why we're excited, man, just to tell your story. I've been telling the showtime about you that they're they're drooling at the mouth. You're gonna get that, wena.
We're gonna get you. We're gonna get your story told. Man, it's real, you know what I mean. That's why me and me and you we get down and we click. We rocked together all right off top, you know what I mean. I remember, brother sat I remember first time we're in the hotel room, me and the Portland boys. You walk through the door with h B. Wales. Yeah, yeah, you know I'm a whole school. We don't like you, you know, we don't like you. Pace right, I don't know.
I don't know who's who, right, you know, we don't know who's who. Man. Like what you're doing here now? Man? Man, this this is real And you look at me like man, dog was good? Man? How you doing a problem? Real? When I live right in your eyes? Oh yeah, this is you know, because we were like, yeah, right off top, we hit it right off top, right off. Then I already knew he was a real one. Man. But you know, I heard a lot of your stories. It's heavy. Life be to heavy, you know what I mean. You know,
life it heavy, you know what I mean. And I like how you relay your messages to the world. You your triumphs as well as your your You're false, you know what I mean. So I salute you stack, you know what I mean. And I tried to do the same thing, you know what I mean. But yeah, everybody got a story to tell. Man, I was a bad boy to league, you know what I mean. The real man that they talked to me. BacT like they want
to talk. Stop playing. You don't like me, I'll go out get Twitter five you're looking at him crazy, showing them, you know what I mean, looking back, as I wish I could have changed certain things, you know what I mean, But that's how I was to go though, That's how I was supposed to go. Man, I wanted to ask you. I wanted to ask you because I think the misconception of people. Do you think that cost you in all
star appearances or money? Or do you think the way you approached the game with with within reason you had a reason to have that motherfucking ship? You know, me and Jack played the same way, but you think your approach may have fucked up some other things or things you possibly had lined up if you took a different approach, do I do? Honestly? You know what I mean? And a real man can confess that, you know what I mean? I real one, only ever real one, you know what
I mean. I just feel as if professionalism came into play and look at that guy. You know, I have a young son, and if he's ever in the situation I was in, you know what I mean, I'm gonna beat him in his head as far as professionalism respects your craft, being know how significant this moment is. You know what I mean, I never took enough for granted, but I didn't grasp but in the moment significance of who I was and what I had gone, you know, I was a star. So I looked back at it,
like the mistakes I made I could have changed. For sure. I could have made more money, I could have did different things, you know what I mean, parlay my career, you know, much further than we didn't win. So I looked back. Yeah, I look inward, you know what I mean. I look inward and said, there's some things I could have changed. With the media, I mean, from minute one, even at unov in college is seeing you know, from
minute one, it was everybody against me. You know what made me feel like you know a lot of bad articles and a lot of a lot of you know, negative stuff out there at ap Press to every city. So I shut down, you know what I mean. I just felt like, Okay, y'all don't like me. I don't like you. You don't rock with me. I don't rock with too. You know, we're not gonna fake it. I just I didn't embrace that part, you know what I mean.
And that's the part that sets you know, superstars from stars or good players, some great players, you know, depending on the market too. I'm in a small market, so I just loot that as like you know, a bad way right off talk. You know what I mean. Rookie season, you know what I mean. So you know, uh, I had I had to put it like I'm just put it straight up. I couldn't understand why it was me
against the world. But if it's me against the world, if y'all really don't, you don't even understand what I had to do to get here. Anyway, I can answer that question for you. I can answer that question for you, big bro. Let me ask that question for you. I know what it was. And because we because like you said, we are similar, we had you had to prove yourself so much to get to the point, to get to
the point to the NBA. Now I'm in the NBA and you average averaging, having having twenty point season, twenty point season, twenty point season, and y'all still want to talk to me about everything but but the game of basketball. What I'm doing, well, the ship would drive anybody crazy. I went through the same ship, you know, just just about me defending my teammate in the stands. You know, what I'm saying I had. I had three four ye in the road wid average twenty nobody never heard about.
Every time they talk about me, I remember the brawl I missed. I missed a whole bunch of opportunities for the All Star because of that. And so what I'm saying you was borling. He was boring. You was doing everything you was supposed to do, but always continuously having to prove something to somebody. When I'm proving, y'all, I'm proving to y'all every night what I'm supposed to be doing, and that's playing a game of basketball. Y'all still want
to twit? Ship is drive anybody crazy? Bro? True enough? I mean, bro, it was taking in Minnesota. Bro, you mean this this is my rookie season. But that's true, very true. You know what I mean. I'm me in my rookie season in Minnesota. In the newspaper they put somebody wants to shoot j R. Volks. You know what I mean. My people in South Minneapolis nomber time it is. I still talked to a few of my boys. I
was like, man, find out what's going on there. It was somebody wrong on a garage like some gag back ship. It was a whole nother, a whole another whatever it was, and what that was, whatever, and nothing to do me. The newspaper put out there to the people. I remember reading this is my first this is my first being there, first month, being in it, you know what I mean. And and media just too. They never braced boom boom boom,
and back then they had the A P press. So anything this person feels, we send it to the next person and they just they just run with that story. If there. If you never mean I hit my faults, you don't mean, because look I had to learning in my rookie season, I get it, you know what I mean, very minute compared to contrast too. But with that being said, I mean the media every city was on one. I was a bad boy. I took it like okay, I didn't embrace like I'm a bad way. I was just
more like, man, y'all got me twisted. I'm about to go serve this two guarden whoever, whatever, seeing whoever, and and and I'm gonna keep living my life, you know what I mean. Yeah, I didn't like them folks, and they didn't like me, you know what I mean. It was a trip, you know what I mean? And then you know, because you know I can't people think the white T shirts and you don't mean I just start that. I ain't talking say I'm not saying that like that.
But I'm just I'm not sayingthing like that. You know what I mean. I love a He's an icon and that's that's the soldier, you know what I mean. But people think whenever he came in ninety five, ninety six, nine ninety three, they already chose a bad boy. They was already hating on this kid. I wasn't going to the All Bro. It's footage. I'm gonna show it to you, Matt. It's gonna make. It's gonna make the thing that we do together for showtime. Bro. I'm telling it's gonna make.
It's footage of me Eddie Jones making an All Star Guy, of me getting numbers and numbers and talking to him in the Guy and they would come give me interviews and we using we using the playoffs. So I say, a writer, how you feeling about your match up with you and Eddie Jones? You shoul you want to talk to me about that? I can just get dressed right now. You know what I mean. Yeah, you know how you
feel that you guys got a little matchup. You guys got a little battle going ain't no battle going on. I'll give him twenty nine. He gets about seventeen eighteen. They got shaggy Meti players, so they feature team. So you got nick Fan actually going the All Star game, Eddie Jones doing an All Star game, shock, and I think one more, I forget you mean. So I'm like, I'm eating up Eddie Jones at my position. You know
what I mean. I'm sorry keep saying your name, but because we don't even have but I've eating up this guy at my position. So you're telling me how to match up one go. They're gonna double team me every time I get the balls how to match up the go And I'm still gonna get twenty five game. And that's that's that, you know what I mean. So if he's an All Star, I say this, man, I said, if he's an All Star, I'm an All Pro period. I'm trying y'all give me these All Star nos to
these different dudes. And then when Philly King they started doing it to him too, I'm like, man, man, I'm playing in Dallas in front of my folks. Woo if I come in Texas and play Dallas, I have fifty sixty people in the stand, my daddy and all of them, you know what I mean. I had to get at him, so I'm starting filly too. He made the All Star team. I said, man, this is a rigor. Yeah, I stopped. I stopped caring, you know what I mean. Like Devin Booker,
daddy fixed ever book his daddy. I played against him in college, so he I ran it to him about a month ago. He's like, man, devil was mad he didn't get the knock the All Star And I said, man, his peers know what time he can get out. I mean, everybody know what you know what it is? You know what I mean? Right to him to keep his head up. He's like, no, he was really shook up. And he's like, you know, it was like really in the duff like he's gonna thank it for a second, like what And
I gave him my example of this. It's like what I went through, and I could tell your dad. Maybe maybe it wasn't. He couldn't compare like maybe his son now, but right, but I was telling him I went through that I went through looking at guys like how are they making the All Star when I'm killing you know what I mean? Like you know what I mean, Like I don't get it to him. Keep his head up. His peers know what it is. You know what I mean. That's really good. But yeah, hey man, there's so much
more we want to get into. But that's all. You gotta come to the studio. Man. We gotta get you a studio. We gotta tell you, we gotta talk more about your story. But man, we appreciate your time today. Thank you for spending it with us and sharing some going to get you, bro. I thank y'all know I was a little chatting, a little talking to him, but I need more. I can't. I need more with your face to face, that's what Ita. You know she got
some more to tell you. Yeah, I know some stories already because some of my people will rock with you. You know what I mean. That's world. It's just Jack to stath that love. That's love. It was fact. We gotta do it again when we sit down, I mean, do it right, no doubt for sure, Jack, you got Jack got a special begging section request usually asked for stuff for people but he has a special request for you perfect yeah, being being there, I got so much respect for you and I never really had a time
just to kick it with you. Nothing like that I got. I just want to get a session there on this. I just want to get a session there with you one time. Yeah, we got to at one time. If you want to do it once, I want to do it two times. You know, we get I just want to get the first one in. But I want to get the first one. I mean, I'm like snoop my senses the last long time man. You know what. We gotta get a session there, bro, I have come through too. We got to look, we have to the string coming out.
And about two months it's okay to say, you know what, Scott Scott packing MiGs and the door, Green Door in the baby. I grew up with the guys when I went pro. A lot of the dudes went grown, you know what I mean. So they're real large in the game, and they're gonna put East Bay funk s ran out, you know what I mean about three months, you know what. I was in the town about a month ago and it's it's lovely, you know what I mean. So we definitely got it, you know what I mean. Put about ten,
I'm together and everybody he's talking. He talking about a good session, a good like fat rat. That might be a power sit there. We might doze off of that bit. We're gonna come right back to life. That's it, man, But JR. Thank you. Man. I hope you guys enjoyed the special Quarantine episode of All the Smoke with Bay Area legend JR. Ryder Jack. Great show, JR. Thank you for coming on.
