Episode description

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 19, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION Something I read in the New York Times struck me as a truth we are facing today. “...toxic anonymity of virtual interaction through social media, ...we have the ingredients for a culture polarized by the perception that we are good and virtuous, while they are inhuman and evil.” Media culture today allows people to live in “thought silos” where their ideas are rarely challenged. Relationships between people with different opinions are becoming more rare and more difficult. As we say “Congratulations!” to our graduates, I ask myself if we've prepared them to be disrupters of this new paradigm? Have we taught them to listen and engage across social, political, and cultural differences? Let's talk about what role religious liberals can play in promoting freedom and open discourse. This is not a simple subject, but it may be central to the future of our democracy and our search for the truth.
