Competition Increases for Shrinking Pool of Cull Cows
Adapted from a release by Paul Dykstra, Certified Angus Beef LLC
Weekly U.S. beef cow slaughter this year has averaged 65,531 head, down 10,467 head per week or 13.7% lower than 2022. Dairy cow slaughter is running 6% higher than a year ago, with a weekly average of 61,754 head. All told, the beef cow reduction is tipping the balance to a net result of all cull cow slaughter at 5.2% lower year to date.
U.S. beef cow herd contraction, now its fourth year, has accelerated in the past two years, driven by drought in much of the Western half of the United States. This has generated sharp packer competition for a shrinking pool of cull cows already aggressively culled in affected regions.
At $244.03 per hundredweight, cutter cow carcass values are now record-high, surpassing the 2014 and 2021 price levels at this time of the year by roughly $0.10 per hundredweight.

World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates: Livestock
Adapted from a release by the USDA
The forecast for 2023 red meat and poultry production is lowered from last month, on lower beef, pork and broiler forecasts. Beef production is reduced on a slower pace of marketings in the third quarter. This decline is only partly offset by higher expected carcass weights in that quarter and higher expected cow slaughter in the third and fourth quarters.
Beef import forecasts for 2023 and 2024 are raised on continued strength in demand and availability of supplies in Oceania. Beef exports are lowered for 2023 and 2024 on tight domestic supplies and strong competition in Asian markets.
Cattle price forecasts for 2023 and 2024 are unchanged from last month.
