Power in Numbers, Relationships

Adapted from a release by Miranda Reiman, Angus Journal

Bill and Laurie Lickley were just looking for more feed for their cows.

Hauling the herd between summer and winter locations and feeding hay wasn’t a business model they felt like they could keep up long-term, so they were looking for other opportunities.

They did find pastures, but they gained a whole lot more, says Bill Lickley.

When the family sent their herd nearly five hours away from their Jerome, Idaho, ranch to northern Nevada, they had no idea it would turn into a 12-year friendship and working relationship. It’s one that led to a deeper understanding of grass management and improved marketability of their calves through economies of scale.

Highlights from the Cattle Industry Waters of the United States Roundtable

Adapted from a release by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association

On June 7 the Kansas Livestock Association, an affiliate of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, hosted a Waters of the United States roundtable with representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency and Army Corps of Engineers. One of 10 Waters of the United States roundtables selected by the Environmental Protection Agency, this roundtable was the only one solely focused on the cattle and beef industry. A recording of the full roundtable is available online.

Aaron Popelka, vice president of legal & government affairs for the Kansas Livestock Association, said, “We supported the Navigable Waters Protection Rule, particularly because it gave some bright, bright lines for our producers to decide, do I need to talk to EPA, or do I need to talk to the state regulatory agency.”

Regional Cow Slaughter

Adapted from a release by Len Steiner, Steiner Consulting Group

Beef cow slaughter has maintained a 15% increase over last year through the beginning of June. Regionally double-digit increases have been seen in regions 3, 4, 6 and 7, but strong increases have also been seen in regions 9 and 10. Regions 1 & 2 combined have seen a significant decrease from 2021. We are not aware of a plant closure, but there may be changes to the number of plants reporting. Region 8 is down 14%, and region 5 is down 6%.

These tallies refer to the region where the cows are slaughtered, and are not necessarily reflective of the changes in state data.
