Bull Selection: The Options are Endless

Adapted from a release by Briley Richard, American Angus Association

It’s bull sale season. When it comes to selecting a herd bull, the decisions seem endless, and you can’t just pick any bull. Your decision will affect your herd’s profitability for years to come.

During Cattlemen’s College at the 2023 Cattle Industry Convention, the University of Tennessee’s Troy Rowan and Charles Martinez discussed the challenges producers face when selecting a herd bull considering the multiple factors at hand — value, long-term effect, traits to focus on and more. It seems daunting, especially when profitability is on the line.

Rowan said, “The bull purchase is probably one of the most important decisions a herd makes. We’re assigning some form of value to this bull, and we’re investing in him based on what we think his genetic potential is.”

Learn How Animal Rights Groups are Exploiting Animals and Donors at 2023 Stakeholders Summit

Adapted from a release by the Animal Agriculture Alliance

Animal rights extremism is unfortunately nothing new to the animal agriculture and food communities; but the tactics and campaigns used by those seeking to take meat, poultry, dairy, eggs and seafood off consumers’ plates continue to change and evolve. Jack Hubbard, partner and owner of Washington D.C.-area public affairs firm Berman, will provide a keynote address at the Animal Agriculture Alliance’s 2023 Stakeholders Summit on methods used by extremist groups to exploit animals and donors to further their agendas and what attendees can do to set the record straight. The 2023 Summit is set for May 4-5 in Arlington, Va. and themed “Partners in Progress: Building a Sustainable Future for Animal Ag.” By popular demand, early registration discounts have been extended through March 17. Can Food Banks Better Promote Nutrition and Health?

Adapted from a release by Amy Quinton, University of California, Davis

An estimated 53 million people in the United States turned to food banks and community programs for help putting food on the table in 2021. In recent decades, food banks have adopted policies and practices to make sure people not only have access to food, but also healthy and nutritious food.

Until now, food banks have had few ways to evaluate those initiatives.

University of California, Davis, Assistant Professor of Cooperative Extension Cassandra Nguyen led a team of researchers to develop the Food Bank Health and Nutrition Assessment to address that concern. Their findings were published in the journal Public Health Nutrition.

Nguyen said, “This tool will allow food banks to reflect on their current practices and determine whether they can adopt additional strategies to promote nutrition and health.”
