This is Julie Mais, Angus Journal editor, with the January 26, 2023, update from the AJ Daily. Today’s update contains reports on fed-cattle slaughter, and information about an interactive workshop slated during the Animal Agriculture Alliance’s 2023 Stakeholders Summit.

CAB Insider: Market Update

Adapted from a release by Paul Dykstra, Certified Angus Beef

Fed-cattle slaughter was encumbered last week due to very large snowfall totals in Nebraska. Wednesday’s total was down 10% at just 90,000 head, and Thursday’s total was down 6,000 head, roughly 6% compared to the 99,000 head daily potential observed recently. We’d anticipate a big slaughter week to make up some of that difference this week, but keep in mind that packers may be happier to pace themselves during January. The typically lower beef demand month has started to show signs of faltering cutout values and the supply chain need for beef tonnage is not as rampant as in December. The cash fed-cattle market was uninspired last week in continuation of the lackluster January theme.

Fed-beef Supply and Pricing to Start the Year

Adapted from a report by Len Steiner, Steiner Consulting Group

While fed-cattle slaughter to start the year has been in line with year-ago numbers, the decline in fed-cattle weights means supply availability is down. Last week fed-cattle slaughter was estimated at 491,000 head, the same as the comparable week in 2022. Keep in mind, this is for only steer and heifer slaughter, it does not include cows and bulls. Total cattle slaughter last week was 646,000 head, 1.4% higher than a year ago. We expect fed-cattle slaughter this week to be a little over 500,000 head, also in line with last year’s numbers. For the four January weeks (including this week’s estimate), fed-cattle slaughter is expected to be down 15,000 head or 0.8% than the previous year.

Interactive Workshop on How to Partner Around the Plate Slated for 2023 Stakeholders Summit

Adapted from a release by the Animal Agriculture Alliance

Food Bullying podcast hosts Michele Payn and Nicole Rodriguez will discuss how partners around the plate can collaborate to reach shared goals at the Animal Agriculture Alliance’s 2023 Stakeholders Summit. The 2023 event, themed “Partners in Progress: Building a Sustainable Future for Animal Ag,” is set for May 4-5 in Arlington, Va. An initial agenda has been posted on the event website, and early-registration discounts are available through March 10.

Today’s society often oversimplifies complex topics (including agriculture) and vilifies certain food groups, but is there a way to co-exist? In a Summit session sponsored by Bayer Crop Science, Payn and Rodriguez will lead attendees through an interactive discussion that provides them with practical ideas to engage consumers in conversations about food and farming that are both meaningful and productive.
