Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen, to against the Grand, the Official Podcast of the Everglades Golf Course Superintendent association. I'm Gabe Gallo, your host, along with co-host, Mr. Dave Meske. Dave, how are you.
I am fantastic. Let's start off by congratulating you on becoming the new Everglades, Gcsa. President.
Thank you, Dave.
How's it?
The other effect thing or something. What was that in.
Yeah, yeah, I've got applause. I got. I got a bunch of stuff over here. Now.
Get all kinds of toys.
Yeah.
Good.
But how's the how's it feel? Life changing.
I reckon I didn't really hit me yet, you know.
Troubling anxiety.
I'm excited. We're in for a good year. We got a good board. Yeah, yeah. Got some newcomers picked up Grayson.
Which is awesome. Yes.
Excellent. And yeah, a big shout out to Really, Dan Brooks leading the way for me, you know he took a lot of you don't know this, but he took an extra year to volunteer as president, and we had a little bit of a a gap situation on the board, so.
Yes.
Really thankful for all the work that he did to get us where we are definitely. He's been awesome, awesome to work with, and I look forward to working one more year with him technically, as he'll be the past President.
Yeah, that's right. That's right.
You're listening, Dan Brooks. Thank you very much. I appreciate all your help and guidance, and I'll still need your help, for sure. So.
Right. But what else we got going, I guess. it's it's a very weird time of year, because it's now, you know, we've got renewals.
Oh, yeah. Yep.
So we just had our annual meeting. which was awesome. We did it at salt leaf. That's a.
Course, in great shape. I've never played there before.
No, I've never played I mean, I played the the Par 3. The short course with the vendor appreciation, and then playing at the annual meeting was was a lot of fun.
I think it was pretty cool. How they had like the I guess the snack stand like in the middle of a like. It's not just like after you played 9 holes right?
Right, yeah.
To get a hot dog or a beer, or whatever it's like you run by that thing like 3 or 4 times.
Yeah, right.
I'm surprised. It was a nice little the intersection there, you know.
Did you.
No, I'm surprised you haven't seen it.
Huh!
Like an accident between there.
It. No, it was a kind of a cool layout, especially you hit 1 point. You go over a bridge which seemed like it went on forever. And then it just kind of opens up into another world. So no, that was a lot of fun out there.
It was. Hopefully we can return again. Yeah. Great site, great hospitality by staff there, too. Oh, yeah, all the way around.
But between now and the next thing we've got, I guess we got the joint meeting coming up in. I want to say, when is that.
I just set it up. You had to say something.
I know right. It's September, September 26, th and that's being hosted by Calusa at the Golf Club at Crown Colony.
Before mine.
Yep, so that'll be good, and then we've got some other stuff coming. But I know we can announce at least announce the Christmas event right.
That we can. We are excited to let all you know it is returning to Bonita Bay, Naples, on December 19.th I'm not sure which course we're playing, but one of the 2 out there. So.
Yep.
Excited. Have have you been out there during the Christmas event? Dave? Are you part.
No say. Every Christmas event I've gone to has been at the Strand.
I gotcha? Yeah. So we're really excited about that. Returning out there to you have to say Bonita Bay, Naples. By the way.
Yeah.
Can't say East. I found that out. So really.
Really, okay.
We used to call it East all the time. And then I slipped up on an email to how and he's like we don't call it that it's Naples.
Oh, I need to update our system internally, then, because our system still says Bonita Bay, East and Bonita Bay, west.
He was cool about it. Yeah, you better. Yeah. Fill out.
Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna yeah. I've got some work to do now.
So, looking forward to that.
Yeah, that'll be fun. That'll be fun. It's been a while.
Redone, the golf course.
No.
They put a lot into it, and so a great thing. So I'm excited.
That'll be a good one. That'll be really good. but I don't know what else is going on.
I'm just swamped. To be quite honest, Dave.
How are you? You've had closures, haven't you?
Oh, it doesn't stop. It's 4 weeks. 4 weeks on. As soon as you're done with that one, it's another 4 weeks on the other course.
Oh, okay.
So it's been a hustle.
How's the rain been treating you?
Better than last year, so far.
Yeah.
So we.
Just seems like.
It's a lot 14 entry yet.
Yeah, yeah.
I think people forget about that. Remember that one was that in the June, or something or.
Yeah, yeah, I know who hasn't forgotten about it. Is Tom Callagar having to do renovation in the middle of that.
Yeah, that was ridiculous.
Yeah, that was an insane amount of rain in a very.
Here's the July 4.th I don't remember that date. I have to look it up anyways. Yeah, we haven't had that yet. I think I looked it up the other day. We're at. I think, 21 inches so far for the year at our place.
Okay.
So.
How does that measure up with with where we're at normally.
I think we're still a little bit low, so a dry. you know, winter and everything. I'm surprised they didn't. We didn't put us on. We didn't get put on water restrictions. To be honest.
Media. It's.
Drive? Where that.
Seems like it all came like when we get rain right now. It's it's a lot of it. And then there's period like a span of nothing, and then it'll be a lot of it, and then nothing.
Welcome to southwest Florida.
Yep, I know it's it's been weird. Finally, seeing the 2 o'clock 3 o'clock storms like setting my my alarm to it.
Yeah, but we're managing through those events. We're having fun working on budgets. That's always fun.
Oh, yeah.
Sorry. Sorry I had to prank. Call you the other day. Yeah.
Yeah, I was gonna mention mention that if you haven't seen that video. go look it up. Gabe posted it on. Think you posted it on your twitter, right? It is on there. Yeah. Okay,
Somewhere.
Yeah, yeah, Gabe, like to decided to call and ask how much? Pricing something per whole and not by acre, and then acted like I was the insane person the entire time. That's what threw me off the most is me. Is you not breaking on any of that? And being like so you're telling me you've never quoted it per hole, and and me thinking and like is, am I the the weird one here like like, what do you mean like? Is this something that just normally happens.
Just a backstory for the people listening. I'm sure it's come up to you before where you've had someone say. you know what's the cost per hole of your golf course. I know I'm not going to say any names, but there's certain consultants out there that that use that at Town hall meetings and stuff like that. And those that are in the industry know? That's basically impossible. So.
Yeah.
I don't know what dawned on the idea, and I know I've thought about it for a while. But the prank calling thing just came up just recently. I figured. Let me call these sales, reps and see if I can get a a cost per hole on these products or services. So it was good, and you were a good sport. By the way.
I'm glad that that I wasn't like the only one who was confused and didn't have an answer to that. Yeah, that everybody you called, would all kind of had the same response.
Jesse was the best.
He was trying so hard, trying so hard, just to be like, oh, man.
Light, like.
Yeah.
Like, you know, in the back of his head. He's like, no wonder why Gabe can't grow grass. This guy is an idiot.
Okay, everything everybody's said about him is true.
Yeah. So check that out. I'd love to do like a real version of what everyone else is saying. I'd I had to do some serious editing, because it got a little couple F. Bombs here and there.
Not safe for work. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it. That was, yeah. That was hard. I definitely thought I was. I was questioning everything about everything at that point with how straight you played it.
It was. But yeah, don't budget by the hole, do it? Yes, you know.
Yes, please.
Your rates and do it by the acre.
Now I'm going to come up with pricing by the whole.
Let's see how that works out for you.
Yeah, yeah, that'll be. That'll be our April Fool's joke next year. for Southern soils is we'll just change all of our pricing up to be per hole.
What did we do this past year? I forgot. We did the the Gator tag before.
Navigator tag, which was the like the air tag.
We're tracking.
Yep.
That was your idea. That was good.
Yep, yeah. I got one, I think.
Well, don't share it.
I'm not going to share it, but I got one, I think would be interesting. I'll tell you, offline, but other than that, I don't know what else, anything.
That's it. We're just grinding it out like everyone else.
Yeah.
I want to appreciate all the members that help me get on the President's seat voted me in. No one stood up and went against me. I appreciate that.
Yeah, I thought about it. I told Christina.
What happened like what happens if that happened? If I stood up and was like.
No.
I think it happened even one time.
Oh!
We'll have to. We'll have to get into that on another episode. Yeah, no doubt I appreciate Dave, and thank you all for listening, and don't forget renewals.
Yep.
