Episode description

Venerable De Hong, a Buddhist Monk, joins us today to discuss growing up in Viet Nam during the war, and the path he took to becoming a monk. He shares stories of 13 years of work with California State Prison inmates, and how the traumas in their lives turned them towards a path of crime. Through education on Buddhism, teaching mindfulness and meditation, he shares great success stories -- prisoners healing from the most severe traumas and turning their lives around -- from being on Life Without Parole to rehabilitation and release. De Hong is a co-founder of The Engaged Buddhist Alliance, which reaches out to help break the cycle of incarceration and create healthy communities through education, meditations and Dharma talks.
