With Jenny Garth and Tori Spelling. Hello, ladies, what why do you Why is your skin so perfect? Jenny? Because I gotta light on me. Wait you guys, you know I just had a birthday, right yeah, well yeah, thank you for your birthday, which is, by the way, I loved him, both of you. Um. I my mom, just my mom just referenced me as a mid century model. Oh no, just literally an hour ago in the kitchen she said, you're like a mid century modern. We all
three of us are not models. Mid century modern. Yeah, you know the house like you're a mid century modern. Oh I thought at first you said a mid century model. That too, basically saying you know, I'm from the mid century. It's like the suburb mid century. Yeah. I'm not mad at that. Not. I do sometimes think about the fact that, like, how like if this is all we've got left, it went so fast, there's so much more modern then, Like the house isn't gonna stay and put It's gonna need maintenance.
At some point. We're gonna kind to clean out your gutter. Oh, I clean away, because then I will be a beautiful specimen and people will be so excited to see me again. If I'm a mid century Everyone loved the mid Center. And then we just patch you up. You like our favorite movie to clean out? What all? We're good. We're good for another ten, I think. Yeah, I agree. Yeah, we got the Oh my gosh. I'm happy to see you guys. I'm happy I made it through another year
to be here with you. Wow. Um, So did you have a drink on your birthday? I'm out of town, so I wasn't with her. You weren't with me. We haven't celebrated yet, but I'm making you celebrate with me when you get past a pie. I had one strawberry basil margharita, which was a lish at Cafe Hamana and Malibu. Oh, I love that place. Cindy and Randy, No, I didn't see them, they weren't there. The gerbs um and then at night I had some wine. We played poker and
I had some wine. I'm impressed with you. That's cute. I didn't like it. I had to play poker. She's good. Oh yeah, no way, you guys. I never win at my home poker games. I won. You look real money? Yeah, it's like a twenty dollars buy in. Oh my god. Who I think I walked away with seventy eight dollars. I am. She never ceases to amaze you. Right, there's just things you're like keep because we've been to Vegas together and we didn't go play poker. That's a commitment.
When you go to Vegas sitting sitting down at a bound as a commitment. Nobody wants to do that with you. So I'd never make people do that with me. I would do it. I would play blackjack with you. Do you play blackjack? No, that's more you don't. Don't you play jack? Tory will hit that. Yeah, my mind doesn't
work that fast. I need to sit there and use my great poker face that I use pretty much every day in my life, This look that nobody knows what's going on in here, because quite often I don't know what's going on in here. So you're saying it works to your advantage. This is a good poker face. I want thought on my gravestone. You guys, she had a good poker face. It's really true, Tori. You don't is Tori's berry. Every means everything can't hide a thing. That's
why we're you. That's what I said whenever anyone asked me about like there was like you know them, you know them in real life, and I'm like, yeah, they are opposites. Opposites but not. Okay, wait, let's talk about the show, Season four, episode nineteen the labors. Should we mention last week just for a moment? Wait, how are you? We can't just skip because the fans, the fans have spoken, okay, rewind rewind about so we had we had Peppergate pepper Gate.
I was like, wait, Gate's not his last name, pepper Gate, a little bit of a pepper Gate, Like, how do you feel? So I processed it. I cried a lot, and and then I tried to rational is it we're talking about, you guys, the whole story that we were told about something once the directors said about they missed it. Just go back and listen. Go back. It's a good
one to go back and listen. Yea. And my favorite part is the kind of behind the scenes afterwards where I'm still upset about it and just looking at your face because I know you so well. You're just like I could tell you want to so like dive through that screen and hug me and nurture me or kick somebody's ass for me, and it just made me love our friendship even more. But listen to it. It's a wild episode. But we're still in talks to get that
director on because we just want to hear. I have had email conversations with the director who says this didn't happen, and fingers crossed. He's thinking about coming on our podcast and telling his version, So let's hope that happens. So stay tuned, Stay tuned. Thirty years is a long time to remember something exactly. I will say that, like, I don't know that anybody is. It's like your perception changes in your course. I think it's exactly right, and maybe
it isn't. I mean, yeah, and everybody has their own perspective, so who knows. But we'll see. We'll see, okay, and I will kick his ass if it happened. M okay. Back to the show, Season four, episode nineteen, Labors of Love aired February second, nineteen ninety four. Synopsis. David dives deeper into his addiction. Donna isn't good at tough love. Brandon feels slighted when Dylan comes to the rescue, Andrea makes a big decision and Lucinda is looking for a
friend with benefits. I love the way this show opened. I felt I was like, uh, just that big wide shot of seeing the street with all those nineties cars. Very cool. It was the first, like one of the first times where you're like, definitely this show was in the nineties, like you couldn't deny it, you know, and Beverly Hills in Beverly Hills, that is Beverly Hills. Loved
that opening. Good job director Jefferson Kibby. Was this the first episode Jefferson Kibby directed, He went He went on to be kind of one of our buddy buddy directors as well. He I don't know, I feel like he's done something else, but I afore this and writers Roseanne Welsh and Christine Pettit. We know Christine Pettit, but Roseanne Welch,
Raquel Welch's daughter. Could it be sounds like Roseanne Roquel my dad was friends with shook it comment Anyway, this episode two was strife with you know, big heavy topics to abortion and uh what was the other one? Well, the business and all the business decisions with the heart attack,
the money, the ore. Pretty heavy episode. Wow, and have to say, just watching this whole topic of um, Kelly and Andrea going to the abortion, going to the doctor getting like lining her up to get an abortion, all the discussion of it just made me so honestly sick to my stomach to know that it's hard to even say this that in twenty twenty three, watching the show back thirty some years later, women don't have the fucking right yes to do what they want with their own bodies,
and it was just so upsetting and disturbing to me. It really was. I'm glad you said that because I felt the same way, like, wow, this really Even on nine two one zero, they they had a topic, a sensitive topic, and they show both sides of it, and I don't know, I just really got me riled up. Yeah. It was very um, I don't know what the word is to to like, it's almost surreal because you're watching
the show from thirty years ago. Yeah, but the storyline is almost more I almost like I'm getting like, look at my I'm like chills because the storyline is more important today, yeah than thirty years ago. It was very out of body for me because it was like my mind was going, I'm watching the show I don't know what date it is, basically right, and it's like happening to one of the one of the you know, characters on a TV show, one one little character, you know.
But to think that it's not happening to one little character, like that's affecting every woman in our country and right, well, he might be turning one hundred years old this uh, this year, my dad if he was with us, really, but look at him, still has his finger on the pulse of relevancy unfortunately. Yeah, and humans so more so now than them. Yeah, and that crazy. They did it well in this episode. I'm glad two females wrote it. I feel like they had to. They had to do
that point. Yeah, and they didn't sugarcoat it or shy away from digging into it. They really went for it with all the details, like the discussions and the yeah and the line like no, this can't happen today because basically saying we're too busy. You're not the only one in this situation. It was very um powerful without being preachy. Hmm. It just felt it just felt eerie kind of. But Kelly Taylor's really getting involved in people's business. She's really
sticking her nose in there. I mean, it's nice she's helping Andrea. But then she goes home and kicks David out of the apartment, and I thought that was good too. She's You've been an advocate the last few episodes for What's right? I know, yeah, what do you? What do you guys think that Donna ran out with the wallet? Oh Donna, I'm still I tell you not to give
him money. Yeah, sure did. And he was so sketchy in that scene, and like you could see instantly that he was going to take that money, just like immediately to get his fixed. And Donna didn't see it. She just loves him time blinded by love. You're becoming an enabler. I was like this in real life with that bad boyfriend.
It's just two art imitating life, life imitating art. It was hard for me to watch that scene because knowing like I wish I could have gone back because the wallet, the rent mine were much bigger stakes, like when I gave him my brand new Porsche that he talked me into buying. When I gave him twenty five thousand dollars because he lost it at a poker game, and I had to be he woke me up, and he's playing with huge Hollywood producers, like took all my money, took
everything the Enabler timestake. So this triggers you, Yeah, can you tell? Wow? I was like storyline. Then I realized you're talking about real life. Oh my god. Yeah, no, she's talking about real life people. Wow. Yeah, Enabler. This episode was gnarly. That rug scene at the end was very gnarly. I'm a needle. I'm surprised they were able to show that on needles. I don't know. She just does this, Amy does this every time. Oh no, I met. Why is the drugs? Why are they going to need im?
Because because that's what you were once. You can't get it high from snorting it or ingesting it, you start shooting it. That's what happens. That's I don't know about drugs like that. That's the evolution. Yeah, because I watched this episode of nine or two and oh I learned right, dang. And the guy, the guy that's on there was a friend of all of ours, like we all. I couldn't remember his name, bo Jesse Deeler guy. Was it Jesse?
That sounds right? Drug Jesse Christopher Bo Jesse Christopher So he was also an actor, really hot actor, but he also would run clubs in La like promoter and did he do Saturday night fevers? That ring a bell here the club does not line up if he and Brian were friends the club the movie The club in Hollywood. It's about the right time Saturday night fever. But Brian and him might have run a club together promoted called Oh I'm blanking, I don't know whoa he was Alexa.
He was the reckless younger brother of Patrick Swayze in Point Break. Yeah, he was a hottie, but he was kind of a little bit of a little dark in real life. We were like, oh wow, yeah, he's he's the promoter of that club, Like boy, that's that's his first name? Bo Jesse. Yeah wait you god, literally, how do we find this guy? Oh my god? Find him? He was so hot under Brian still friends with him. Yeah.
That scene though, was really intense. Oh and I felt like this is the first time they've gone that dark on the show, like that dark into drug abuse. And I mean I was kind of glad that they did to scare kids, because it scared me just watching it. Something that stands out to me in this episode is the relationship between Andrea and Kelly. We haven't seen that so much. Yeah, we've seen like little sprinklings of it. I think we've established that they but that Kelly is
somebody that Andrea goes to in situation. But Andrea goes to Donna too. I'm never really seen her go to Brenda. But now it makes sense because Kelly's gotten I got a lot more experience with real life tough issues, and this is one of the biggest tough issues that a young girl could probably face. So it makes sense that she would go to somebody like this character to like
have her hold her hand through it. And I thought it was so sweet when the doctor called her into the office and she said, would you come with me? I thought that was really touching. You know what stands out to me about Kelly. She's very loyal. She told
no one. This was not like something she went back and you know, a group of girls like that, you might say, oh, don't I have to tell you something, but you can't tell, you know, Like, she really just stayed loyal and she's like a she's a very good friend. And I feel the same thing about the way she's handling the David situation. Yeah, you don't play with Kelly. You know, she's pretty straightforward. But I mean, I think that the way she's handling the David situation, the drug use,
think is the way you should handle it. But it does seem a little harsh, a little just it seems like it's colored a little bit by Kelly's experiences from her mom in the past, So that makes it come off as harsh to David because it's the first time she's dealing with it with David. But I guess that's the right way to go about it. Kind of tough love. Yeah, the juxtaposition between Domina and Kelly is like enabler tough love. It's like, yeah, I'm not sure what they're supposed to do.
This guy is got drugs in their home, I know, and then he goes to work to get more. And then the boss, the DJ guy, what's his name, Howard Howard Howard fires him and he's the one that got him hooked on the drug. Well good, he can handle his drugs. He couldn't. He's out of there. Sorry, pal, I don't know. I was watching so much Kelly face this time. This episode there was just so many Kelly faces.
I was like, the only thing I really wanted was somebody to give that girl some contour because she's so freaking white and like moon face, like so white. I just wanted to cut the cheek bones just a little. Ah see, it is so wrong. I literally was like, I loved her and she's so beautiful. Yeah, I'm like a contour tour on her? Isn't that interesting? Contour not a thing? Then? Now now you can't live without it? Right?
So funny that you're saying that because I actually wrote in my notes, great makeup on this show, because to me, everybody looks very natural. The boys, I liked it. Everybody looked real good point. Yes, there was a lot of close up shots in this episode. I literally wrote in my notes, great makeup. Makeup is so my literally wrote down,
give that girl some contour. I think too, when you're watching it so different because you're watching your cells where I'm just like completely sucked into these the whole thing, Like, I don't know what you're supposed to do about David. He's a total train wreck, and Donna's apologizing all the time. I'm sorry. Oh, it's painful to watch and he's like fiending so hard. He's like, Tori, what's going through your
mind when you're watching Donna? The forty nine year old me is like, she's pathetic, but I regrets to that in moments in my life anyway. It's hard you go back to your old ways. She's pathetic, she's in love. She has no one to guide her. I think like her parents, she doesn't have a great mother figure example, not that she would ever tell her mother, but there's no there's no one strong. I mean, the strongest person
in her life is Kelly, you know. And Kelly's trying to handle it at the same time the best way she knows how to handle it. So it's it's a very good point. It's so interesting, like when you just said that before, how you said sometimes at forty nine and I hate that you can still say forty nine. By the way, not for long, my friend. You know it's coming up the big five. Oh. It's so interesting because you say you regress back to that same quality issue in your real life, because I am the same
way as Kelly is in my real life. Like I'm very straightforward, I'm very like tough. I can be very tough love. I can be very brass tacks about things, and I have to work on that personally because it doesn't there's a time and a place for that, and sometimes it can be abrasive, and sometimes people don't. People just don't like it. But you're saying that you have the same challenges, Like you can go into your life where you say sorry for things that you're not sorry for.
You have no reason to apologize for. Embedded in us these characteristics that we are we still have as growing women, is wow. Well, the part of me that's in Donna that I regress back to was always part of me, though Donna just developed her every week, so she came out more. I don't know if that was because I didn't know you before, Kelly, So I don't know if that any of those traits were a part of Jenny's
personality and it came out more. Really, I sneezed yes day and apologize and I even stopped and I was like, I look around, like, what the hell? And that's so fascinating to me because I'm thinking about this this director that were we were talking about earlier, and this incident that may or may not have happened. I literally can see you guys talking to him, with Jenny being Kelly and Tori being Donna, and Tori saying, oh, I'm sorry for something, you know what I mean, and Jenny being like, no,
so did what came first? The chicken or the egg? Like she's saying the chicken came first, or no, the egg, her egg came first? And what about you? I don't remember being like as um determined and you know, as strong as I as my character Kelly was at that age, do you think you became Kelly? I think I in a lot of ways, I had to just to survive on my own in this business. I didn't have you know, tour was lucky enough to have her dad there too. She'd been in the like in the industry, she knew
what was happening. I was. I had no idea what I was doing in the industry, and I had nobody watching out for me other than Randy, my manager. So I feel like I had to Kelly up in life. It's fascinating, but I like I like it. I like I like just interesting. I like them both. But I totally see what you're saying, and it's like, you really can't have one without the other. I don't know that it would have played so well with Kelly being tough if Donna wasn't chasing after with the checkbook. No, it's
literally funny. It's like transferred into even like our business relationship as we've gotten old, or like just our dealings with all the things that we do together. It's not like that extreme, but there's little essence of that aversion through vain. It's so fun kind of good cop, bad cop, and kind of at the heart of it, like you are who you are. You can work on your shit. She's not. You work on your ship, but like you still are who you are essentially and as funny how
it does like trickle out. I think it's interesting this conversation because you're right, like if I had to describe each of you in one word, do it well, No, you do have that like, no, you're right about it. But then at the same time, I do think Tory can be tough. Oh yes, and Jenny is a pile of mush, sweetest thing on the planet. Yeah, totally, yes, we totally have. That's why it works, you really is. It's usually not at the same time that we have
those qualities. You know what I mean Jen, like, you can meet off and I can be like sweet, no, no, no no no, but when I get like, no, we're doing this business wise, You're like, bud, it is it? We usually switch really episode this podcast, like Tory and I got in trouble because we were off on our phones, you know, and you want to please Jenny. I don't want to be like I don't want to mess it up.
Like so you you both are these people, and I understand it in the characters because ultimately they want to like David is letting HELLI down, and he's letting Donna down, and he doesn't care. Right now, he doesn't care, but we'll see. I do think a couple of things. If we may switch to Jesse for a second, who I really cute? Yes, I saw that he was so cute, but it did bother me when he said if you go through with this, don't come back here. That was
kind of gnarly. Yeah, not cool. He was just I think, really reeling with all his emotions in that moment because he didn't think that that was even on the table right for her to have an abortion, and certainly not to have an abortion without discussing it with running the father of the baby agree and he was in half, you have no nothing you could do. You really can't do anything. And she wasn't being fair by being like, this is all about me. It's like it is about both.
He really stepped up, but then he says that harsh line. But then he comes around. It was complicated as it would be as it is. Yeah, now it's a little bit with a bow kind of nine o two one zero. Yeah, because then they go to the peach pit and not they come in and they don't even like move out of the doorway. It really bothered me. They just stood in the doorway of the peach pit and announced it to everyone. Couldn't we just sit down at a table and now this right, they really take over that joint.
There are other customers. What did you think? Okay, did something stand out to in that moment? Mm? I know what when Brandon lip kisses fully lip kisses, Oh, that didn't bother me. I loved it. What did he whisper to her too? He lip kisses her and he's like, I told you it would be okay, Yeah, something like that all Brandon always knows. I thought this was a
good episode for Brandon too. Because I don't know. I love it when um in the moment when he got a little like but hurt that Dylan was going to be buying the peach pit. Yes, I love it when you get to see Brandon, I Jason the actor play those little sentiments emotional moments because he's so good at it. Yes, you really feel what? I don't know. He's just so subtle. He's such a subtle actor and I just love watching him.
He isn't good enough of those, no, because he's too busy being number one, running like he has to be every man for the show and keep it together. I love those moments and I love when he gets fired up. Oh you know what I didn't love what make it out? Sextrey. Brandon's sextry wrote with whoo oo, I put somewhere between you and I love this because it was a real close up of watching him make out with the hands
and ye know how he does it? She doesn't know? Yeah, I do know, but honestly, I don't see a connection between those two. What did you think of when he went over there? There's no there's no chemistry. I don't think it feels very fabricated. Yeah, yeah, what about um Emily. Hello, Brandon, didn't you right? Didn't you promise yourself to wait for Emily?
Where are the frigs? She nobody cares about anybody these days, not one hundred percent that Brandon and Lucien to have no chemistry because she's so sort of cool and hot that maybe you feel zero. I'll tell you who she has chemistry with, and I'll leave it at that. Dylan, well, mhm, and I'll leave it at that. I'm sort of back to the dry thing we talked. I think we talked
about this a little bit. I wonder it must have been so hard for her personally to play these scenes like the the torn like gonna get an abortion, scenes like I could just feel it made me cry, Like, yeah, that storyline must have been so hard for because she was pregnant. I r L. You know that's talking to the baby scene. It was a good episode. It was. It was really good. I'm glad that Nat made it out of the surgery. Okay, he looked this, Uh, pretty
good for having just had open heart surgery. I say, because I've seen a man after that and they don't look like that. Very sweet. When he said, I'm talking to my boys. Uh, and very very cute in the hospital hallway when the boys turned around and they walk away and you see their cute little butts. Yeah, I
liked that shot. I think my only flag on the play in this episode was when you are at the dorm with Andrea having this real heart to heart and she's basically having a meltdown and you're eating Chinese food and boom, all of a sudden, you're out of her time to go. Well, you don't relate. It was we had a big day ahead of us. You know, I needed to get some sleep to be ready for that. Oh you know. It was a red flag for me in this episode in the scene in the peach pit.
Another part of that scene when she announces it and then all of a sudden, Dylan pulls out a canister of breadsticks from nowhere and then they're the cigars. The peach pits never served a breadstick. That's not on the menu. I thought there were pencils. At first. I was like, what's happening. That would have made more sense, like a bowl of pencils by the cash register. I don't know breadstick. I will also say, though, I thought Brenda Samon Brenda.
I thought Shamon slash Brenda was very sweet and cute and smiley in this episode. Like, there were some moments where I'm like, there's a scene where when when the baby announcement, she's very cute looking, and she was cute to brand. She seems happy, Yeah, yeah, happy, like she seems like when you're happy in your real life. It kind of oozes onto the screen through your characters overalls and a few outfits that I thought were so amazing overalls.
And then when she's in class with the cute sweater in the pants. Okay, guys, in the last ten minutes, he might have felt me a little distracted here, maybe, okay, because you know, and Jen knows, when I get on something and I can't remember it, I go nuts. And still I just figured it out, and I'm so Brian was friends with bo Jesse. Brian brought him onto the show.
Brian had a nightclub called Ballistic. I couldn't remember the name Ballistic, and it was like a dance kind of and he would do it like it would be like a club one night a week, Yeah, one night a week. He would host it. It would be his club, and bow Jesse was a part of that, and I'm doing all Does anybody feel it's weird that bow Jesse Slash whatever his character's name is, literally has a drug den in his dorm right there, knock knock knock, Yeah right,
And I thought the same thing. Let's he will have a lot of stories. We will find him and it's just like there's like just this mess going on in that room. And then the show ends on lu send it and Jason and Brandon and I fell asleep because yet without that yeah really, yeah, it's like those movies that have three endings and you're like, yeah, I was. It could have been over at the Andrea or the drug den, none of the drug did lucend Gaddy here? Yeah, we did go from the High I would have slipped
the order. I maybe would have gone drug Den to Lucinda's and then back to the peach pit because that seemed like a nail, because we did go from the peach Pit back to the drug den to the gnarliest scene I've ever seen on nine o two on like full drugs and like were they going to inject needles in between toes? Yes, they took off your everybody's like take off your shoes your boy. First of all, I don't want to see all those feets gross mast yeah really fast. I know we have to go. But Hallie
and Dylan are just thriving. But are they thriving? I think they're so sweet. Are they together? I don't even know anymore. They're not together enough to not be thriving. Some juicy stuff is coming up. There's thriving. He's so like, it's all good right now, right now, bomb, Okay, guys happen. Oh, let's rate it. Let's what's their homework? Jen? Oh, you don't have your paper? You can. We can use fingers today. Let's rate it. Um, I can do it. H whoa you gave Oh? I thought you gave it a ten.
You give a nine. I gave it an eight. You gave it a seven. Two hard hitting ones back to back to back. Surprising because you know, people do want to be entertained a little bit and not be like heavy. It's getting real real, like yeah, yeah, I think it's going to be heavy next week too. Oh man? Really next week is episode twenty season four, Scared Very Straight. So that's either going to be about David and his drug addiction or one of the characters is going to
come out as gay? Yeah, pretty much. I hope that's it, really do, really really do, because that would be fun. This season's good, it is. Yeah. I feel like we've been watching season four forever. Isn't it funny? This one has gone on forever. Every time I go on the Paramount Plus to find the episode to watch, I'm like, wait, what that was in season four? I can't believe. And it's still got a long way to go. It has, My lord, there's tony something episodes in this season. Oh
that's good. That's good for the buds up. See you guys next week. Love you guys. By
