It's nine with Jenny Garth and Tory Spelling. Today we have actor David Gale joining us, known as Stuart Carson from season four of nine to two. And oh, let's talk to Stewie, the guy that almost got Brenda married. There it is. What a handsome fella. Oh thank you. How are you? Are you back from Harrie? Yes, I'm back from Paris and I have my son. He's nine years old. Gaultier's really nice. It's we tried to connect with you last and you were in Paris and they
were a bad connection. Yeah, I was. We were out with the kids, had a couple of families and we were playing in the park and it was kind of hectic and thereon I couldn't get the thing correctly the time zone. Yes. Oh we're happy you made it, made it happen today, Thank you, Yes, thank no problem. So good to see you. We've we've been watching the show back from the very beginning, can you imagine. Yeah, it's great. So we are we are on season four now. Currently.
We want to jump back. We want to jump back to what Stewart, what's all things Stewart? You were in the beginning of season four, right, I was in actually two roles in nine two and I played the bellhop I think in the second season, or it might have been the first season. I played the bellhop in Palm Springs, I believe. Do you remember his name, David Gale? No, I don't remember. It was Tom. Okay, okay, I figure I didn't know either. I just read it from the producers.
But that was really that was incredibly surprising to me. You know, when he asked, when Aaron asked me back to be on the show, it's a different character. I was like, how is that possible? So and such a bigger, bigger role. Yeah, yeah, it was. It was really interesting. Yeah, okay, wait wait we like this stuff. When this happened, so talk us through it. So you auditioned for Tom. Just
what happened was I was new. I just got into La tell us about that less than a year, I think, and he had had a reading for I had an initial reading with I forget with with who, but he you know, they thought that I would be, you know, a good addition, maybe possibly as a recurring role right away. But I was green, you know. So I went in there and I wanted to the big room in spelling entertainment that had all the seats. It looked like a theater.
And I remember I was so nervous. It was nerve wracking. And you know, they listened to it and my agent asked, you know, how did it go? Harry Gold? And I was with Harry Gold who wasn't with Harry Goldry I was with Harry Gold too, all of us. So anyway, um, yeah, and uh, you know the word was you know, you didn't get it. You know, you know how it goes. Uh, you didn't get it, but they really liked you, so
they're going to give you a smaller role. So wait, wait, wait, do you know what role you were trying out for. I don't remember what the role was. I don't remember who got it. I was. I was just trying to hit all my auditions and I just kept moving, you know, so, um, yeah, I forget the role. Actually, brand I know I was going to say that, no, no, it was no, it wasn't a series regular those are already established. Um, it
was a new recurring role. So but it was substantial, and uh, you know, I was kind of bummed but happy I got Yeah, And then he brought me back later after i'd done. I think Robins hoods um up at Vancouver and I was like, yeah, okay, you want to bring me back for you know, so I auditioned and Scott it. So that was a that was a big, big role in a big effect, had a big effect of my life, you know, personally, because you know, the show was so popular and it's still popular in a
lot of places. And in Europe, you know, they still remember. They're like, oh my god, that's right, and it's just crazy, it's just insane. You know. I didn't recognized as Stuart, not all the time. But yeah, you know you have those people, and you know, Kelly, you have these people that, uh, you know, they have an eye for faces. You can, I don't care what you're wearing. They just go David Gail and they list your resume and that's it's amazing.
But you know, and then you have every variation of that. But but yeah, yeah, during that time, you probably really got recognized. As soon as those media episodes with Stewart and Brenda Er. You were Brenda's man. I mean everybody Hue I was in it. I was in uh, I'd take my first trip to Europe. I was over in Greece.
Everywhere I went, it was like it was just InCred Like I said, it changed my life so much because it affected me so much personally, and uh yeah, everywhere I went there was, you know, just a mob of people around me. You know, as soon as one person recognized me, it was it was it was just like
you know, dominoes. It was. Yeah. I remember being on a boat coming from Greece to Italy and I was on the top deck and my girlfriend was down in the room and I had had the sense of one down to tell her that I couldn't make it down because I was surrounded on the top deck of this huge ship by like a hundred you know, fans, and it was really, it's really it's She was like, oh, yeah, okay, he always gives that excuse what's he doing? It's just yeah, right,
what's you really up to? Yeah? So yeah, but it's just you know, I described it, you know, this whole thing from the moment I started booking roles on television. You know, it's like if someone lifted your feet off the ground, you can't really touch the earth the same way. You know, you walk into any place or any restaurant, any place and someone knows you. It's just not normal, you know, so wow, feet off the ground can't take Jen and I have been searching for the reason for
thirty three years. My life has just been somewhere not normal. It's the it's your feet, it's your fink gen. Yes, they don't hunker down some work boots and then we could just go on just normal people. Uh. It's so true, though, I mean, fame is um. No one really tells you how to handle it right right right, how it's going to handle you and stay with you for your lifetime journey. I have a question, did anyone any hardcore Brenda Dylan fans want to fight you? No? No, they were like, okay,
he took Brenda, that's fine. No, they were just happy to meet you. You know it is I feel like the Stewart was pretty well loved by people, even though Brenda. I think the Brenda Dylan thing was kind of over at that point because Kelly ruined it all. Uh before people were really embracing this new character until he kind of became you know, why did that happen? Were you told that was going to happen? So I had a conversation with by the way, Jen, Jen, you were like
the nicest. I mean, Luke was very nice, but Jen was you were. You were so sweet and I remember that vividly, and I just wanted to tell you that. Um uh so what about me? That's funny. You look great too, kid. So what happened was, I, uh, I got a phone call from Aaron after we finished this series. After we I guess we were in Vegas and we didn't, you know, the marriage, and it just kind of or what it didn't happen. I get exactly how it happened.
So what happened was, uh, he I got a phone call and from my agent said, Aaron wants to speak to you. He says, look, you know, uh, you know, you're liked by a lot of people, and we're getting too many emails and messages and and about where where what happened to Stewart and you know, and so we we we've decided to fix it. And I said, okay, we're gonna bring you back. We're gonna make you an asshole.
So that's when they set up the camping trip and I said, okay, so he goes, so really really play that. So we're gonna set up the camping trip and uh and in yours, she's gonna lock the keys in the car and you're just gonna flip and you're gonna carry that out all the way to to uh Palm Springs, I think it was. And uh, you know, she'll throw the keys of you. The keys will go in the pool, whatever it is. And oh, you'll you'll blame it all on you'll. You'll be late and you'll blame it all
on her. You know, you'll, you'll. So this is so not Stewart though. Yeah, but they had to do and I was like, you know what, Okay, so I really played that up. So I thought that was fun. You were good. Oh wait, okay, so you were also not We can come back to nine to twenty. Oh, but I have to jump into this what you were also on a soap called Port Charles, right, Yes, I was. I'm a big soap fan, so I get excited. Which when we talked about soaps, she loves her soaps. Yeah. Well,
we we also have six degrees of David Gale. Jenny has one because my manager that I've been with for a million years, his son who I held in diapers, played your son on Port Charles. Do you remember Colton James. You remember Colton? I remember he's on a second Yes, I do remember Colton. I had a couple of sons. I had another series of dud I had a boy. Yes, Colton James, I do remember. How do you know him?
He played your son? No, he was an actor, but now he's following his father's footsteps and he is a manager. He's one of my managers now. So yeah, he was a sweetheart. It was it was really but that was fun. That's difficult. He was sick a lot. He was in a hospital bed. Yeah that's right. Yeah, okay, you know that's funny. You were on quite a number of Port Charles episodes. One year, I had a three year con tracked and uh, one year is all it took to
do two hundred and sixteen episodes. It's a two hundred and sixteen that's what that's our factor here, three or four? Doctor Joe Scanlon, No, it couldn't wait three. Yeah, maybe how many episodes? Two hundred and sixteen says on our report. That's a wild from nineteen ninety nine to two thousand. I don't know if that's possible, but I mean I did They said you would be in a minimum like three episodes a week, but you know, sixty pages a day.
It's like crazy, right, it's insane. I remember this one time. I hadn't done any preparation. This is an actor's nightmare. You know. You you tell me you're coming, you're it's a stage call, and you haven't memorized your lines. It's it's horrific and panic. Right. Yeah, So it was a night before and it's every day, you know, every day it's a new episode, and you know you have nine scenes. So I had They had nine scenes about three pages each each one, so about twenty seven and I had
just I was just like spend. I don't know what was going on, but I put it off. I put it off. I couldn't believe it. I kind of read through it and I was so tired, so as I said, look, i'll just get up early and I wake up at five and I'll just start hammering this out. And I got to I got cornered basically on time, so I had to go in. So I basically read through about thirty pages of dialogue and just highlighted myself and just
read it through like three times and didn't memorize. It just went off like what the emotion was, what was happening in the scene, And I just kind of offered it up to like maybe I'll remember this for some reason, like maybe I will. I have to. So it was high stress and I was trying to slide under it and just play, you know, calm myself down so that my brain could actually do this, and you know, I
had a couple of hiccups, but it worked. I couldn't believe it, but wow, it Yeah, it was pounding story. I didn't know what it's going to happen. I think that's happened to everyone every after out there, where you you put it off, you don't do your memorization, and then you're all of a sudden on you're like, oh shit, yeah you're like that huge log. I thought that was the next day I had time. Oh it's right now. Yeah. Yeah, it must be so much harder for the soaps with
such a high number of page count. It was, yeah, it was. It was. I mean it's many times I get on the set and I'm like, wait a minute, give me, what did I call them? The mini sides? The mini sides? Don't we don't remember those anymore because they no longer worked with us because we need glasses. Yeah, we have the big sides now the full script page. Yes, yes, well yeah, so how are you doing, Tori calling the que cards. I'm doing well. I you were wonderful to
me also, you were. It's okay, David Gael, It's okay. You can like Jenny Butter. I'm just excited that this It rarely happens. She's let her have her movement. And your dad was so sweet to me. You really really was. I was kidding. I think, thank you. My dad loved you, and I mean, as you know my dad, when he loved somebody, he went on to use them as much as he could. I mean, he kept putting you in things too bad. The other two shows didn't right completely work.
So first Robin Hoods Robin's Hoods, Robins uh, and then Savannah, which was really special to him. He loves Sava, right, I bet that was That was the WB's first one hour drummer. Yeah, yeah, he really, I was really, you know, more so afterward he was he was gone. I really realized, like god, I can't I can't believe if he did that for me, because when I was going through the you know, many auditions trying to get but I wasn't
putting it together. I didn't realize because I wasn't. I was new to Hollywood, and people are saying, don't you know what's going on? I go, yeah, it's great, you know, I'm doing the work. He said, oh no, you don't understand. This man is actually doing everything he can to make you a star, to put him in all his shows. And he told me that, he goes, I'm going to make you a star, David, and he was so sweet.
That's so sweet. When the last time I saw him was in the elevator at Spelling Entertainment and he was in I was coming out of charmed audition, which I did not yet, and I got into the elevator. He came in with two attorneys on the side, and he's he's all me, and he his face just lit up, and he gave me a big kiss, like he kissed me, and he hugged me like for the longest time, and he said, do you know he kissed on the lips? Right, yeah, he kissed me on the lips. He was a kisser.
He kissed me all over. I loved it. Woman anyone. His lawyers were like, uh, mister Spelling, we have to go. He goes, hang on, I'm gonna tell you about this guy there, sir, we have to go. We have to go to this meeting. So he was very very sweet to me. I was very lucky, very lucky. You're you're living in France now, No, I'm in Florida. Now, yeah, you're in Florida. Now, I'm in Florida. I moved back here with my son, and I'm making my way back
to the Los Angeles probably within a year. So, oh good. And do you have hopes of going out for stuff again? Yeah? Getting back in there. Yeah, I would like to sure. So you know, I missed California. I miss you know, my career in the business. I know it's difficult, but you know I it's not intimidating to me in the sense that I, you know, I have something to offer, so yeah, whatever. Yeah, you're so talented and you have such a great look. Now you're just like a different
kind of leading man, you know, Yeah, definitely different. It's so handsome. Oh thank you. Why the name Stuart, Where did that come from? That always confused me? To Stewie A good a good looking guy, has it all why Stewart? What a great what a great? Yeah. I just really
enjoyed that character. You know, when Sonny, when I came to the set, I don't know if you remember, but like it was I felt, you know, I was kind of an outcast in the as a character right in the group, kind of an outcast in the right zeph Forth Shannon for a period um well brenda um. But I was also like when I came on set, I
felt like that also a little bit. Not that everyone wasn't welcoming, they were, but but I just felt like, oh my god, these guys are already up and running, they're doing their own thing, and I'm just a guy coming in. And it was the first time I had a recurring role coming up into a you know, an established cast like that. So it was really a paralleled a lot of things. The character paralleled a lot of things that I was feeling just in general. But um, yeah,
it was a great role. I mean there's so many aspects of it. You know, my father such an asshole, I forget what his name. He was always putting me down, and you know, him being rich, possibly dealing drugs, he was you know, there was a time. You remember Howard Fine, right, Howard Fine. Yeah, that was my acting coach. Yeah, yeah, so Howard Fine. I coached with him on this and I said, he's got he's got me sane, Howard. You know, kisses with you or like potato chips, I can't eat
just one. And I said, how can I say that? He goes, that's gold. You go deep into that and you say it with all the passion and you know, like you sell that, that's you don't run away from that. And that's when the role changed for me that I could get sappy, but I had to really like, you know it in one on one. But I was trying to change the lines and you know, and he was like, no, that's that's a beautiful line. You know. So that that was one of the moments where I really defined the character.
It was like we always thought that Stewart and Brenda had really great chemistry. I remember watching those episodes and thinking that they made a good couple. Yeah. Yeah, we had a lot of fun. It was. It was really really fun. You know. I remember the first kiss we had on set. It was like it was and then kneeling down and proposing to and all those things. It was just kids. What was the kids like? The kiss was great, but I was so nervous, you know, I
was you know, you get the cameras all around. The Chris was wonderful. But you know it was actually really nice. I do remember it. It was it was nice. It was you know, soft, it was gentle, it was Yeah. I wasn't removed from the moment. I was in the moment. So that's that's a good sun. You could tell. You could tell you guys were doing a great job at that. It was nice. Who was the first cast member? If you can remember that, you met walking onto set, walked
on the set. It was in the valley, walked that big warehouse. Yea nice. Yeah, I remember they had the vivid warehouse next to us. The poor now yeah, actually but I walked in and all of the director's chairs were in a group, and all of you were sitting in a group. And Luke stood up on the foot footstool of this chair and he goes David Gail, and I said, yes, he goes, welcome to the show. And he jumped down and he said I'm Luke Perry. I go yeah, yeah, I know you are nice to meet you.
So that was the first person I met. Yeah, and then I you know, I met everyone at that moment also right after. But yeah, I remember him doing that. He was good. He was a good uh what would you say, ambassador for the for the show. I guess, a good ambassador how to live a kind life. I can remember. I can see him doing that as you described that. Can't you just see Luke standing? Yeah, yeah, yeah, he goes, yeah, welcome to the show. Is anyone not
nice to you? No? Distance, No, I didn't talk much with Brian Austin Green where Brian um we we did, I mean in the beginning, and then later on we warmed like we got closer and I was in his like his uh his room there on set, and then we talked about a few things and and Ian I didn't I mean, Ian is ah right, he'd be proud of course, so I uh and I we we had some moments off and on. But you guys and then Luke and it were like the three that I maybe
talked to the most. Shannon of course. But Shannon, see, the thing was that it was funny how like our onset um relationship developed as our as our characters developed, so like left first days where we hadn't established anything and we were shooting like just meeting or whatever it was. Um it was you know, she didn't really we didn't really talk about We just let that happen on sets. And I was kind of like, I was like, Okay,
just don't push anything. Let's just let's just sit here and you know, work on your where being, you know, try to saying character and concentrate on your on your role. And uh so, uh no, I'm I had a lot of time with her, no, and a lot of the all of you on the set, but um, you know, I didn't really hang out much with anybody. So Luke I saw afterwards. I saw the different places I did a play. He came to that, were you married then? No, but I have a relationship, you had a girlfriend then
we had no need for you. I'm just kidding. I don't think I have a girlfriend when I was doing when I started doing interesting, Okay, well I can't explain it. Then I do know. You know, Shannon would be very verbal with us off camera about her love interests or men that she didn't like working with, and she really loved working with you. I remember that really yeah, she did, and remember being negative. Yeah, no, no, it was solid. She was dating a guy then I forget what was
his name. I think she got engaged to him, Ashley Hamilton. Yes, at the same exact time as we were getting engaged on the show. It's like almost the same time. It really was almost the same. Well interesting because the little jen what's the little uh it was almost like a lingerie piece for her wedding dress. It was like a slip, right, a slip. She went on to wear that as her wedding dress. Ish a version of it. So you were practiced for her in real life. That was her. Yeah,
that was practice. She was kind of you know she she didn't really talk a lot about personal things. Yeah, pretty private even new gossip to tell us nothing, that's all right. You know. I was in and out. I was scared. I was scared. Scared. I was scared. You know. I think if I remember, I dated a girl um on Robin's Hoods Jennifer Campbell and uh yeah, and uh then I dated Robin Lively and on Savannah and he Uh,
I'm fronting a pattern, Duke called the actor pattern. You got me into the bathroom of h UP in the Atlanta and he said he said something to me, you know, he was, hey, you just like you're cocky. I'm not. I'm not cocky. I'm not. I'm just do I need is? And then Aaron had said something to me to my agent, like, you know, tell him to kind of back off on the girls on his shows or something like that. What my agent said that. Who knows if my agent just came up with it and said it, you know, he
let all of us fornicate. I don't know why you got it. So I'm thinking maybe that was something trying to be gross funny funny. So you guys seeing each other quite a bit, I'm sure you have. We do? You see each other every week? Right here? Yeah, same bad channel, same bad place. But it's been so much fun catching up with all, Like we get some really great memories from all the guest stars that we've had on and people love hearing it from you know, all
the characters, not just the main characters. Yeah. I was looking at the I just was scrolling through, like the original cast and all the people that were on the show. Oh my god, Paul Johansson. I mean it just goes on and on and on, I'm just it was just incredible, incredible. Yeah, well, we are so happy to catch up with you. What tell us? So you have your son now who is nine? You said it's nine years old? Yes, say his name again, Gutierr. Do you live in France? We live in Tampa. You
live in Tampa. I was over there for back and forth. We want you to we want you to live in France. It sounds really magical because it like feels like it's like, I don't know, perfect for Stuart to live in Yes, yes, but your son is clearly French, speaks fluent in French. He's French. Very sweet, very Uh did you live in France for a time? You ever been to France? Yes, I have been. And if you climb the Eiffel Tower, because it's a lot of steps, it's like, why did
I start that? I didn't climb it, but I've been up there, so yeah, it's a beautiful place. But I did miss the United States for many reasons. You know why. Tampa. This is where I was born and raised, my mother, my dad, my stepfather passed away two years ago, three years ago. My dad passed away a couple of years ago. Oh my no, he my dad passed away a couple
of years ago. My stepfather passed away a year ago, and so my mother is eighty and she's here in our place here Tampa by herself, and so I had to make a decision to come back out and so, yeah, and I have a lot of friends. But also, you know, I wanted to get get my son acclimated to the US in the school system and different things, because I just feel more comfortable I can do more for him here. But you know, I still you know, this whole journey
has really fired me up, so to speak. It's gotten me to a place where I feel like I can I can make another I can get back. Yeah, and I can have another nice little a few years or whatever. Absolutely, you know you should. We're looking at you right now and we can attest to that. You also have a great voice. You should do voice over. There's so many things for you back here in La come back to us, David Gale so much. It's so sweet, that's very nice.
It was actually it was a really special time. Like I said, it was great, and you guys tell me so. I remember the first season it was starching go like like every series is. Yeah, right now. Wasn't four at a time, three, three, more, two more stuff like that? Right? Yeah, we hear. It wasn't until we did the summer episodes of the show really took off. Okay, all right, David, Well, thank you for being with us today. So nice to
catch up with you, and please come back. We hope to see you on a screen doing your because you're so talented. Yeah, thank you so much. I appreciate it. You were. You were like a live lucky penny to my dad. Man, it's hard not to cry. A male version. I could put you in a lot of stuff. I always wanted to work with you. Says a lot about you. Thank you. Yeah. I'll tell you one quick story if we have a minute. Do we have a minute? One minute? Yeah.
I went to Vegas. I was at hard Rock. I was there with a girlfriend and I was at the bar and having a drink and your dad came up behind me and I turned around and he uh, he said David, and he gave me again a huge kiss, and he said, come here, I want you to meet someone. And he was there, I guess. With all the producers and writers and everyone from Spelling Entertainment on some like some whatever. They were having a you know, it's like
a celebration of some sort. We were there. He brought the fair so there was a table with everyone I had worked with and all the shows and everything, and I was like shocked. It was just it was it was beautiful. So that was another another special time I had with your dad. He was really really amazing, amazing guy. Wow, what a career he had, What an effect he had on American television. It's crazy beautiful. Anyway, we're all grateful. Yes, well,
thank you, all right, thanks David. Well, can we call you Stewie. Thanks st Stewart Carson crazy be Well, okay, thanks David. Thank
