This podcast is part of the seventy Sixers podcast network search seventy Sixers podcast wherever you get your pods. After seven seasons, the seventy Sixers decided it was time for a change. Someone will be able to bring a new voice and new perspective. James ken And will be uncomfortable, but it's necessary. We owe it. I owe it to these fans. I went to this city to deliver on our goals, and that goal is to set the franchise
up to truly compete for an NBA championship. As I've been taking a deep dive on where we failed, what went wrong, and how we get better, it felt like we need to strengthen our organization from top to bottom. Whatever's going to happen, it's going to be with the focus of getting this team over the home. On this episode of the broadcast, we look ahead as general manager Elton Brand prepare us for a pivotal offseason. Hayn, Brian Seltzer,
and welcome to this stition the show. In an ideal world, I'd have a little more joy in my voice and be here with my peeps in podcasting, Lauren Rosen and Devon Gibbons talking about the Sixers knocking out the Boston Celtics in the first round of the playoffs or something
like that, but that, unfortunately is not our reality. The Sixers are out and on a far more global, more significant level, there's now yet another instance and reminder revealing that the cries for racial justice in our country aren't being heard the way they should be. Before we dip into this week's episode, I do want to fill you guys in on how we're going to try and program the offseason here on the seventy Sixers podcast network. First
and foremost, keep checking the feed. We do not intend to go silent Between a new coaching search, the draft, free agency, and news about the start of next season. We're going to have a lot to cover, so at the very least, I'm hopeful that we'll be producing one new episode from one of our series per week, whether it's this show, Tom's Talks with Tom McGuinness co check
here they come. Who knows, maybe we'll develop and launch a new miniseries from now until whenever we start ramping up for twenty twenty twenty one, and again, be on the lookout expect fresh content from us, because we want to be here for you all offseason long. If you've got any questions, thoughts, ideas, just email me at Brian Seltzer at seventy six ers dot com. Okay, that's that, and now for this week's episode, which I decided to do in the form of an audio essay. Though everyone,
thanks for being ed to day. I hope you and your families are doing well. Join He's extremely challenging times. It's difficult to day for this organization. During an end of years zoom session with reporters, Elton Brand made his offseason mission clear, figure out what it takes to put the seventy sixers in position to contend for a championship, then make it happen. We had high expectations and goals and simply put, we failed. We failed, and it's not acceptable.
I'll hold myself accountable to get this right. Leave this organization, and I will Topping the forty one year olds to do list is finding a new head coach. I'm taking a hard look at our shartcomings and recognizes that changes in the offseason are necessary to get this team back on track. As uncomfortable as it may be, it's truly necessary. Brand says his search can't and won't be rushed. I'm gonna be strategic and thoughtful. I'm not going to be
in a rush. This is a pivotal point for our organization, you know, out a crossroads right now, so this higher is extremely important. As for the characteristics the Sixers will seek in their next on court leader, it sounds like Brand hopes to identify someone who's got a little bit of everything. All options are on the table. We're going to figure out their temperament, you know how they plan
to use Joe Well and Ben their philosophies. So I'm looking forward to a thorough interview process with some great candidates that are that are out there and that could be out there. Above all, Brand wants to hire a candidate capable of pushing the Sixers to quote the next level. Looking for a coach that is going to maximize the talent. The right coach for this group is what I'm going to look for, and once I start this interview process, I assume that that would be clear. We'll find out
who's right for this group. Good morning, everyone. I'm very excited to introduce Elton Brand as a general manager of the Philadelphia Savy Sixers in just a few weeks, Elton Brand will complete his second full year as general manager. He was promoted to the post in September twenty eighteen, after spending parts of the previous two seasons in the Sixers personnel department. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, good morning. Thanks everyone for beer here. Means a lot
to see so many players and staff up here. I wish it would count towards contract negotiations, but it won't. But thanks for coming up. I'd like to thank John Coward, prior to being named GM. Brand, of course, was a former number one pick and co Rookie of the Year who logged seventeen seasons in the NBA as a player. He was with the Sixers from two thousand and eight through two thousand and twelve, before returning in two thousand
and fifteen. And it was named an All Star with the LA Clippers in two thousand and two and two thousand and six, written up for thirty two and they're right there wearing this red firts and got no answer for him. He is unbelievable. Fifteen of eighteen. Elton Brown Brand feels his time both in uniform and in an NBA front office gives him an advantageous perspective. The unique situation that I've been put in over these last few years, you know, positions me to leave this and then to
be a part of this going for it. He also thinks he's a different executive now than he was two years ago. I've been through almost every situation there is, So I'm looking forward to leading now. We're gonna get better and really position ourselves, do everything to position ourselves to win. Yes. In charting the future for the seventy sixers, Elton Brand believes Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid will assume
prominent roles. Simmons finished the twenty nineteen twenty regular season as the NBA leader in steals and routinely excelled in individual defensive matchups against the league's premier scores. Lost the ball there, Simmons another break and he slams again Ben Simmons as they forced the turnover on Dunchich. Then at a great season, you know, led the league and steals should be on an all defensive team. He's played great and he's going to continue to grow an offensive end
and he brings us a lot and bid. Meanwhile, dominated following the NBA restart, six Ers go to a bead to the right of the lane. Double team comes. Joel dribbles around turner slab bead. What a slab. The big man ranks six in the league and scoring third and rebounding and first, and free throws both made and attempted during the opening round of the playoffs. Joel Embiad is growing as a player and as a person. You know,
I think he's in a right spot. The way he led during this restart, in this bubble, you know, you don't get the Seaton behind the scenes spearheading team events, and he was pushing to do a lot better, and he wants to win, and he wants to be in Philadelphia.
On the heels of a regular season that saw the Sixers post the best home record in the NBA and notch noteworthy victories over the likes of the Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks, LA Clippers, and Los Angeles Lakers, Brand says it's now up to him to identify the most effective on court compliments for his all star duo. They're twenty four twenty six ers old, respectively. You try to make that fit as long as you can. They want to be here. They want to be with our organization, and
I see them here for a long long time. Cheers to that scenario coming to Fruition. Thanks for checking out this episode of the broadcast. Again our offseason goal and pledge to you at least one new episode per week from now until things start to ramp back up again, whenever it is that the twenty twenty twenty one season is set to begin.
