This podcast is part of the seventy Sixers podcast network search seventy Sixers podcast wherever you get your pods. It was Daryl Morey's first draft for the seventy Sixers and it did not disappoint. We all came together as a new executive team and dock myself, Elton and all the key editions in a very short window that made it
it's super intense from draft picks. It is kind of crazy enough being a teammate of Vin tim Is now just after seeing him in the gym in a shop grinding all summer to trade acquisitions getting seth you know you can argue for him as the best shooter in the NBA Draft Night twenty twenty had it all tons of prep going to this to be ready for every scenario that comes up. Very excited about the picks and
the fit with the roster. Here for more Tyrese, Maxie and Isaiah Joe as Lauren Rosen and I react to a wild day on this draft recap edition of the broadcast. It might be two thirty eight in the morning in the East Coast back here in Philadelphia, the seventy six Ers twenty twenty Draft Train continues to chug on along. Lauren Rosen twenty twenty speaks for itself seventy six or is twenty twenty Draft Night change a pace? I liked it.
What a day from sort of start to finish. This was one of the more exciting drafts, at least for a team that I've been with personally, that I've ever had. I mean, if I guess starting the night with five picks, you knew it was going to be interesting, and everything that happened from the moment we were on the clock was really cool. Like you said, two thirty in the morning, I didn't know if I should brush my teeth or
off coffee before we did this, so I did both. Now, in full disclosure, it's two thirty eight in the morning for some of us, but not all of us. Go ahead, you want to shame me on the podcast, you have to do. There's no shame. No, there's no shame. I just think that facts need to be acknowledged. I mean, it's still late in Houston, Texas. Yes, it's only one forty in the morning. Here caught just an important distinction,
but we felt like it was important. It was our podcasting duty to have a fresh episode out as fast as we could on the heels of a huge night for the seventy sixers. Most things we can discuss something we may not fully be able to discuss until something's happened. But all in all, the vibes were great. I was really lucky I got to be at the training complex on draft night and overall, just great fresh energy in
the building. I think everyone rightfully walked out of the war room at the end of the night with pats on the back, a little dabs, even with face masks on, that sort of thing. It was some really good energy because it was a successful, productive night, Laren for the
seventy sixers. Not only did they get talent in the draft, they got talent through trade, they got talent with value, and they got talent that is going to help them get to a place they want to be this year by changing the dynamic of the roster, which by the end of the night you could tell what the mission was, and the roster looks different and noticeably different before free agency even starts, And by the time free agency starts,
it's going to be time to start training camp. This whole thing, like I can't wrap my head around how quickly it's all going. But today was a good place to start because I feel like, even if this isn't the full final iteration of this twenty twenty one season roster, we have a better idea of what it's going to look like and who might be key in the starting lineup, in the rotation. It is cool to see the way that the team has kind of changed since when we
woke up. I suppose yesterday morning, no doubt about it. It was evident by the end of everything, the seventy sixers wanted shooting. They want to be able to space the floor on offense and build things around. They're two young cornerstones in All Stars to Ellenbiid and Ben Simmons. We're going to talk about Tyrese Maxie, We're gonna talk about Isaiah Joe and Paul Reid and Seth Curry. But to me, Lauren, one of the most fascinating things of the whole entire deal was that there was a front
office with star power. Darryl Moorey hasn't even been on the job for three weeks. You couple him with the likes of Elton Brand and some other new executives not
to get too too granular just yet. But there were a lot of new pieces in the front office, with some parts that remained from last season as well, and they were able to come together and have I think, by all accounts, if you would ask anyone who files the league a really successful and good night, it was intense, mostly because we all came together as a new executive team and DOC myself, Elton and all the key editions in a very short window, so that made it it's
super intense. I think, you know, merging, you know, merging these multiple perspectives. I strongly believe the best decisions are made when multiple people, multiple experts come together and work together to make a decision. And you know, that was a big part of the night. Other than that, like it was just a lot of work. I mean, COVID is tough, we're all dealing with it. But honestly that
that was a sidelight. You know, we were so focused that we didn't notice it well, And they've been saying it all week, right, the folks that we've gotten to speak to have discussed the fact that it seems like despite the newness among DOC rivers, Daryl Morey, prosper Carengua Peter didnw This is a new squad, and there's some people that are that are holdovers, people that are veterans
of the seventy six organization. But something that they've all said is that they feel very comfortable with each other. They've been challenging each other. They've had really productive conversations. And I guess when you're able to challenge each other quickly and honestly and start to gel and build that kind of chemistry as an office, you can do some pretty cool things pretty quickly. For me, Lauren, I'll be honest.
Going into the night, I kind of wondered whether or not we would even see the seventy sixers pick at number twenty one in the first round, and how they were going to make use of all five picks that they had. But as we saw the first round emerge and unfold, there was that run of some prospects with
great shooting ability in the mid teens. Then we saw some bigs go and then you got to a point where around seventeen or eighteen when you were like, all right, there's going to be a couple of guys who could be great fits for the seventy six ers at twenty one. If they ended up staying there, then they pluck a guy like Tyrese Maxew's got a terrific pedigree at number twenty one, a guy who I think a lot of people might have put inside the top twenty, and the
Sixers got him at twenty one. Well, one of those guys that would have put him inside the top twenty is Darryl Moorey himself, who when he spoke at the end of the night, he was probably as tired, if not touch more tired than we are now, but he said that he's a guy that you could have gotten in the lottery, that maybe he expected to go in the lottery, and the fact that he was available at twenty one was a deal and probably a pleasure to be able to bring someone in with that much talent,
Like you said, pedigree. He's someone that has the stamp of approval from one of his teammates now, Ben Simmons, who he worked out with in LA and Lebron James as well. So anytime you've worked with those two prior to entering the league, you're going to have an advantage. And that all came obviously after he had already built up a pretty pristine reputation as an exciting prospect. So all across the board, I think everybody's really excited to
get Tyrese into Philadelphia. And I like Daryl, like you felt around eighteen nineteen, there were some really good players on the board, so it felt like by the I'm twenty one rolled around, you couldn't really go wrong, and clearly the Sixers didn't. We're excited to have such a blue chip prospect there top ten in high school. I like guards, you can guard multiple positions, and he can do that. Doc really wants to get out in transition. That's a big goal of coach Yager as well, and
Tyrese has a history of that. People have sort of fixated on his shooting, but the reality is two things. One that you know, we do a lot of things to try and we're look at mechanics, look at look at other measurables to see how they're shooting the pros
and we're optimistic on his shooting. And then the overall package outside of that, you know, we think, you know, he's just a guy you get in the lottery, and to get him at twenty one, where with at a position of need, we're very excited about tyrese at Kentucky for his freshman year last season, played in thirty one games, fourteen points, four and a half rebounds, three assists. He also averaged around to steal per game forty two and a half percent from the field thirty percent from three.
He is learned what appears to be a physical specimen, a beast, a guy who is strong, who can get around the rim and do some physical things, and that could be one of his great attributes coming in. And it was also interesting to hear Daryl Morey talk about the three point shooting and how the Sixers don't feel that the percentage that was attached to Maxie's name in college is what's ultimately going to translate at the NBA level. Yeah,
that's exactly what I was going to add. That was something that Darryl drew attention to in his press conference that they didn't feel like that thirty percent number was necessarily indicative of his potential from deep. You have to keep in mind, these guys came off maybe the most unconventional college basketball season ever. The sample size is a little smaller, the situations were really different, especially once we were in prime pandemic season in March. So I hope
that their eye for his shooting is correct. But like you said, we found other shooters tonight, veterans and rookies alike, So if that's something that they're optimistic about when it comes to Maxie's game, it does appear that they didn't go wrong in terms of any shooting opportunity in all of today's acquisitions. Another part of this acquisition that really excites me is he is a guy who, as we discussed, was projected to go high. Maybe some people had him
as a lottery pick. But now he's coming to a team where he's not going to be asked to be the guy. They will have a defined role for him with other established players, remove some pressure from him, play to his strengths, accentuate all the good that he can do in his first year, and see where it goes from there. Yes, there was shooting that the seventy six ers added on Draft night. Will get into that in a moment. But before we close the book on talking about Maxie, you got a chance to sit in on
his media availability and listen. He was gushing, gushing on the ESPN hit he did with Malika Andrews. I loved how he closed his interview by saying, Philadelphia, you're not going to regret this. But he's also got some superstar ties. It is kind of crazy enough being a teammate a been s is now just after seeing him in the gym, in the shop, grinding all summer, and you know, it's a dream coming true. And I really appreciate guys like
him and Lebron. You know, they've just been telling me to stay with it, keep grinding, and stay who I am man, keep our personality and just because you know you get drafted, that's not the end. That's not the that's not what you know, the end goal. And that's just as stepped in the building block and we're working. I've been putting in this work and this is for you know, December twenty second, you know, when we step
on the court to compete against other teams. Well, we talked about those superstars in Ben Simmons and Lebron James, who obviously gave their stamp of approval maybe while they were working out together, but then tonight on Twitter verse as well. But I like what you said about the emotion that he showed. Obviously this was a super unconventional draft night, but in a lot of situations, maybe it made the whole thing a little bit more real, a
little bit more raw. The way we got to see them interacting with their families, I thought was really special, especially with a guy like Tyrese who had a very emotional reaction and just on a human level. I have to give props to someone that's willing to show their emotions and willing to show how much this moment means to them. I found it really special to be able to watch his reaction. And then by the time he got into the zoom, like you said, I was on there,
and he was just exuberant. He was so excited. He clearly is chomping at the bit ready to get to Philadelphia, and it seemed like he was still sort of basking in the afterglow of it all as he should. As the timeline of the night win Tyrese Maxie acquired. I think it was a little bit before ten o'clock, not too long after that, on the phone some notifications there were indicators that something was coming, which was ultimately confirmed.
Seventy six ers acquiring Seth Curry from the Dallas Mavericks. Josh Richardson going to Dallas in the trade. We thank you Josh Richardson. Loved him as a human, he was terrific all around, great guy, enjoyed being around him last year. I know you had a very similar experience as large. But Seth freaking Curry man coming in with the three point clip that he's shot at over the last two years,
better than forty five percent from three. He's hit over one hundred ten threes in each of his last three seasons. Really a meteoric rise in the NBA level between Dallas and Portland over parts of the last three seasons. What a get, What a get? Indeed, And if I may, just before we jump all the way in with Seth Curry, I want to reiterate what you said about Josh Richardson. What a phenomenal individual, such a pleasure to work with
from day one. We see a lot of players come and go, but he's someone that really left an impression. So the MAVs have a super high character, really funny, really interesting individual and I'll definitely miss seeing Josh in the locker room. I know if he's not listening to this, but I just wanted to make sure I showered him with a little bit of praise and positivity because he was an absolute pleasure to be around, was kind to everybody from top to bottom, and I just really appreciate that.
We'll look forward to seeing him as an opponent. Wish him all the best. Like you said, Seth Curry seems like a wonderful fit for this team for many reasons. Obviously on court you listed some of those stats. He is a great shooter, he comes from a pedigree, a lineage, if you will, of great shooters, and he's someone who's deal honestly makes a lot of sense for this team.
He still has a few years left. It's a team friendly deal now for the Sixers, and I think he's going to be able to make a lot of impact at a good sorry what's the word of looking for. He's gonna be able to make a lot of impact at the right time when we needed him. And so I think when it comes to getting someone that's a veteran, someone that fills the holes that this team needs, you might not have been able to find someone much better
than Seth Curry. Having a truly gravity elite shooter really changes the dynamic for Ben and Joel and those who've watched the Sixers up close and personal, like you have longer than me, know that when they've had when when Joe, l and Don have had that, it's actually insane. How good those how good those lineups and how good those teams played, you know, when everyone was healthy. So that that was really the theme um for tonight, you know, getting getting set. You know you can argue for him
as the best shooter in the NBA. Um you know was you know, it was just really exciting. It's amazing. He went undrafted, of course, out of Duke, and the thirty year old is now the active leading three point shooter among all NBA players. And that speaks to what one of the philosophical missions was for this front office coming into the night. Get some space on the floor through shooting, creates more financial flexibility achieved from this trade. And yes, he is the son in law of Doc Rivers.
He's married to Doc's daughter, Callie. We actually had a chance to catch up with Doc as he was leaving the war room after the draft on Wednesday night, and of course we had to ask him, Hey, how do you feel you got your son in law? And he's like, yeah, I love the deal because he's my son in law. But make no mistake, we made this deal because he's a great basketball player and you can't dispute that. And he can get to the cup, he can fill it up.
I'm just really excited to see a shooter like this on a roster that also features Ben Simmons, Joel Embiad, Tobias Harris. Yeah, and it's hard not to touch on the family connection. Obviously, it's sort of storytelling gold there. But I do appreciate that that was sort of Doc's first take that they wanted him because of his skills, and come what may, regardless of what the family dynamic is going to be, this is someone that they wanted.
And we have to remember that Doc also coached his son Austin in LA, so he has experience balancing work and family, church, in state, whatever you want to call it. And I think if anyone knows how to handle a funny or different or unique dynamic, it's going to be Doc Rivers. And I'm excited to see how that all plays out. Doc said that he said, I've been down a similar road before. I've coached my son, and now I'm going to coach my son in law, and you
know I did ask him. I was like, well, when did you start to catch win that this might have been a possibility, He said for the last couple of days. It was something we were discussing and his daughter, Callie, who works in the industry for CIA, the sports and entertainment management company, He said, she was like hitting him up every day, like where do we stand with this? Where do we stand with this? And with all due respect to Seth, it sounded like, and I don't want
to put words in Doc's mouth. The thing that he was most excited about was that his two year old granddaughter will now be in closer proximity to him. So, what a wholesome draft night development, which we're all about here at the seventy six ers. We love the wholesome content and better yet, if it's good basketball content, this is a win win all across the board. And I love just a little extra family dynamic coming into this team.
So it's going to be great. I was really thrilled with that move as well, Like we already said, tough to lose a great guy like Josh, but also seems like we're bringing in a great guy and Josh is off to somewhere great. So it kind of feels like a win win, win all across the board. All righty, let's get back into the draft and some of the guys. The seventy sixers acquired Isaiah Joe with pick number forty
nine out of Arkansas. Spent two years at Arkansas and during that time he shot the ball at a great clip from outside the arc. Battled a little bit of injury last year, but he was a name who was associated with the Sixers for a couple of days, a little bit of a period in the lead up to the draft, and he was right there for him a place that I'm not sure if many people thought going in in terms of Mox would have thought that Joe would have been there at that late stage, But there
he was. In the seventy sixers got another three point marksman. They did, and like you said, they were able to swoop him up maybe a little bit later than they expected. We've talked about the value that the team gained today. It's really incredible when you look at someone like Joe, who was very respected among this class. In his most recent season at Arkansas, averaged sixteen point nine points, four point one rebounds, one point seven assists, one point four steals.
That steel number gets me excited too, because it seems like the guys that we got not only can they produce on the offensive end, but they fold into that defensive mentality that Doc has been so open about discussing. He said today on his ESPN hit that he wants to build one of the best defenses in the country,
and he thinks the offense will come. So it's cool to see that that's something that he's been saying when he first walked in a couple months ago about the existing roster and still continues to apply to these young guys that joined the Sixers today. So Isaiah Joe, someone like you said, who was in the conversation and now is officially in Philadelphia, hit over two hundred three pointers in his two years at Arkansas, average just under seventeen
points per game. Last season, Isaiah Joe a seventy sixer, and he spoke on Zoom after getting picked. What I bring into a team is my shooting ability, my ability to stretch the floor. I can knock it down from anywhere at any angle, off the catch, off the dribble. I'm a capable ball handler. So if the team needs me to bring down bringing the ball down the court anytimes I can do that, and my IQ offensively and defensively, I feel like my defensive persatility is actually really good.
I'm willing to sacrifice my body. I'll take a lot of charges ievers around two charges of the game at Arkansas, and so I'm willing to do that, and I use my link to my ability. So I think the main thing though, my ability to shoot the ball. And for the final pick of the night for the seventy six Ers at fifty eight, Paul Reid, three year big man out of De Paul. He can score, he can rebound.
Defense seems to be a strength, and I think it looks like he could have been what many people would have thought to be one of the more intriguing guys in the draft. Seems like there's a lot of upside with a guy like Paul Reid. He's someone, like you said, and maybe slipped a little bit. Now that's the third time we've talked about it in as many picks, someone that we might have got a really good value for
with the fifty eighth pick. But if you want to go through his stats in his most recent season, he played three seasons at DePaul and most recently average fifteen point one points, ten point seven rebounds, one point six assists, one point nine steals, and two point six blocks, which
is impressive considering he's six to nine. I don't know if you expect two point six blocks from someone with that size, but like you said, he seems like he's very versatile, a lot of upside, a lot of impressive potential with a guy like Paul Reid, and like we started this conversation out with great value with the fifty eighth pick. Sure a lot of people have heard of John Hollinger, former NBA executive with the Memphis Grizzlies, guru for a lot of the metrics that are used to
more accurately gauge player performance and projected. He had a really good article on The Athletic if you just search Paul Reid's name and John Hollinger. Going into the draft, Hollinger considered him to be a sleeper pick, and this article explains why about how some of the numbers for Paul Reid, if you dug a little bit deeper, projected him as what people would probably view as top twenty
or first round pick. So I think the Sixers felt like, yeah, they got great value with Read at fifty eight, and Daryl Morey for the reasons you're about to hear, feels like he's a guy who, in the right scenario, which obviously deems this to be, could help with Joel when he's for the you know, sort of thirteen to fifteen minutes when he's off the floor. Paul Reid's a guy who can guard multiple and we can play a dynamic,
up tempo shooting. Good fit with Ben. Obviously they're all rookies, so the reality is most rookies take more than a year to even contribute. But obviously Joelle and Ben are going to be here wrong long time, and we feel like all the guys we took are very good fits with those guys. So yeah, that Darryl Mooy likes about Paul Reid. You know, the pandemic, there's a lot of
not great things about it. But if you're lucky enough to be healthy and have things going well for you and you're looking for a diversion, the NBA is providing that right now, and in any other year we would have the draft, we would have to wait about a week and a half for the start of free agency, and then after that you'd have to wait probably three months ish until you got to see most of your new acquisitions in your team's uniform at training camp into
the preseason. Well, I mean, we're like two and a half weeks away from training camp, which again we opened. I think this entire pod talking about this, but I can't wrap my head around everything that's coming. I was impressed that even in the late night high stakes maybe like after glow vibe that Daryl had on his press conference, that he was already looking ahead to free agency. This group is wasting no time. He said. We have a plan and we're ready to implement it when it comes
to free agency. And then obviously at some point we're all going to have our Thanksgiving dinners and then turn around and be at training camp, which is just insane. And like you said, there are a lot more important things going on in the world right now. But to have this diversion, to have this escape, it is special.
I'm looking forward to it, and hopefully the NBA will continue to do what they've done since March, which is keep in mind everything else that's going on in the world as they bring the season back, so I'm curious to see how it all fits together. Obviously, in the world, it seems some things might start to trend upward a little bit, and maybe that'll coincide with the start of
the season. There is a lot coming, and as I said to you when we were off air, I feel like I've taken the scenic route to a lot of my answers tonight, probably based on tiredness and time. But this is the perfect example. I'm just going to stop talking now. We will leave it at that. There is, as they say, more to come, and I think next week, I don't want to jump the gun, but I'll do
a little soft tease. I think we might have to meet the prospects week on the podcast next week, but of course that could be overlapping with any late breaking, instant reaction news to whatever happens in free agency. So we expected to be a busy week on the podcast next week, maybe even before then. So just you know, subscribe, follow, get your notifications when you do so, and yes, we'll have lots to talk about, we figure. But hopefully this
was a coherent production. If you made it all the way to this point, listeners, I hope it means you're listening in the morning because this is just too late. It's time first, sleepy. You deserve some sleep. If you go getting all right, we'll talk to next time. See it two
