This is seventy Sixers. Rewind time now to listen back to postgame reaction from the team's most recent game, tough one for the seventy Sixers in this Saturday matinee losing for the Portland Trailblazers one thirty two one fifteen. Brian seltu with you from Sixers dot com. We hope to hear from Sixer's head coach Brett Brown, as well as maybe some players involved in today's game too much Portland.
Once again, it's a shame that Joel Embiid wasn't available for either of the two matchups and Sixers had against Portland this season, given the talent that Portland boasts on its front line, in particular use of Nurkis, who just started to shake loose thought. The Sixers held him in check after about a quarter and a half, but down the stretch of the second quarter he started to get going and Portland was able to maintain that momentum and
carried over into the third just blew things open. And then Enis Kantner now that Portland has him behind Nurkics, that is a tough front line to contend with, and those two in Nurkics, Cantoner. Part of the overall theme of this game just that Portland was able to take the seventy Sixers inside, both in terms of drives and layups and dunks, and on top of that, obviously rebounding.
The final margin in that area fifty three two thirty three in favor of visiting Portland, and the offensive rebounding nineteen for the Trailblazers just seven for the seventy Sixers. So it started off relatively encouraging for the Sixers. Portland looked a little bit sluggish, but the Trailblazers were able to get themselves into a groove. Damian Lillard played in control throughout the entire game. They all star with seventeen points, five of ten shooting and of his five misses four
with three point or six rebounds, eight assists. He committed just one turnover. Nurkics finished with twenty four and ten to go with four assists. Cantoner off the bench with sixteen and eight. Jake Layman, who yes, Jake Lahman eight points and eleven rebounds, And I thought, you go back into this game, this series in the first half where Layman just kept going to the glass and grabbing rebounds.
That was emblematic. A. It was emblematic of what happened today's game, and B it almost seemed to invigorate and jump start the Portland Trailblazers, one of the bestern teams in the Western Conference, and they certainly looked like it this afternoon. For the Sixers, they were paced by Ben Simmons. Simmons twenty nine points, ten assists, he tied a season high and scoring, Ben also bringing down seven rebounds. It was his seventh twenty point ten assist game of the season.
Mike Scott thought he was a bright spot. Fifteen points a high as a Sixer since the trade six games ago. Scott won five of eight from the field, three or four outside the arc. He had four rebounds and two assists, but he was asked to play a lot out of position because the seventy Sixers went slightly small. I believe we might have Ben Simmons at the podium. We're gonna quickly listen in our ear to see if that is indeed the case. As the Sixers, they'll lose one thirty
one fifteen the Portland Trailblazers. Simmons he had a tough game on the defensive end, as I think many of the Sixers would as they would tell you afterwards, and we might hear Brett Brown say, I think Ben is he made a quick exit from the podiums who will not hear from Ben Simmons will stand by for Brett Brown. But obviously a game like this against a talented opponent, you see where the loss of not having a player like Joel E. Bead and of his caliber and his
abilities hurts the cause. As the Sixers, they just could not slow down Nurkicch, especially in some of the pick and roll action that Portland started to run with increasing effectiveness in the second quarter. And it was another game in which Portland was able to outdo the seventy Sixers in a pretty handy way. Tobias Harris at twenty points, he had eight rebounds as well three three pointers, Jimmy Butler with fifteen as the Sixers fall the Trailblazers one
thirty to one fifteen here at the center. So for the Sixers now it's looking ahead to the road as the New Orleans Pelicans awaits, and then on Thursday they're going to have the Oklahoma City Thunder. No Joel we know for sure, most likely in Monday's game against Anthony Davis should he play, and the Pelicans, and then they'll reevaluate, hopefully at some point before that OKAYC game, or at least we'll get another update. But I do think we
have Brett Brand at the podium here he is. There are other pieces that are important, but none as significant as that fact. Is that why you went with the It was rich like in all, I mean, they had four Big Ball wasn't getting it done either, Like, they had fourteen offensive rebounds in the first half, and I tried to look at Ama like to see if maybe that could help with some rebounding stuff, and it didn't. And when you when you try that sort of combination
and that two didn't work, Big Ball didn't work. We really didn't fix much with Amida. And so my instinct is when the game is clearly leaving us that I'm going small, we're gonna switch stuff and we're gonna try to speed it up and hunt threes that stuff, and you know, it still hurt us. But I think they only had five. I think up the end up with nineteen, you know, so they had five offensive rebounds. Big ball hurt us really as it relates. We we can't connect
the dots to small ball with offensive rebounding. That's not true. And so yes to your point about like why did we It was for those reasons to a lot more loose balls and balls they did. I see. I felt that as much as anything we came up with with deflections or broken plays, and we didn't come up with the end result. I thought initially we did a pretty good job of busting some stuff up, but to ultimately secure the ball, we didn't do that. We just didn't do that. And I would be curious to see the
percentage of when we didn't do that. How you know, somebody's just open at the rim, like they just find somebody and there's a there's a one foot shot. But I agree with you, Tom, we we did not come up with some of those loose ball stuff, and seemed to indicate he thought it could have been effort in some of those cases. Do you agree or disagree with that? Um,
I'd be better off answering that accurately after I see it. Normally, you know you go there when when there's nineteen offensive rebounds, Normally I do go there. Um, I'm not going to do that until I can sort of look at it and like feel I can give a studied answer. Um, I would answer that like that, I would seventy six Ers head coach Brett Brown. After today's lost the Portland Trailblazers one third, one fifteen, Tom McGinnis is up next.

Seventy six Ers follow the Portland Trailblazers one thirty two one fifteen. Brian Selzer with you from Sixers dot com as the Sixers fall in two games this season to Portland,
which takes the season series. Tom McGinnis rejoins US now, and this is one time the Sixers actually seemed like they were getting off to a pretty strong star, but particularly down the stretch of the second quarter when Nurkics got loose. That was a theme that carried over to the third quarter in Portland just opened things up from there. Well,
I mean, what's the phrase in the NBA. There's there's Well, you're gonna have games like this, but you don't want to have that many, particularly when you're tracking toward a season of great proportion. And how the Sixers been playing, and this was another one of those clunkers, if you will, they have one in Portland. They happened, I get it. But tonight or today it happened because the Blazers were
that much better. And you mentioned Nurkics, that was an area there were multiple sequences and matchups where the Sixers didn't match up, and Nurkics was one of them. And with Damian Lillard, you know, Brett Brown talks about one five pick and roll being the predominant play in the NBA,
and specifically in the middle of the court. Well, they had that one sequence where it was Lillard their point guard, their one tour kitch, their center, their five man, and they ran at time and again I believe they scored four times in a row and that duo was very competent for them, and Lillard you gotta love it. I mean, the guy can rack up thirty points any night, but he was a playmaker and he put his players, his
teammates in great positions to score. And then I hate to go here, but tonight or today, jj Reddick was a defensive liability. And again that's the NBA. When there is a mismatch, teams are going to go at it. It was heartless. And then they come in with Canter who was equally as effective off the bench. And again a number that I put out toward the end of the broadcast or earlier in this postgame coverage, they had fifteen dunks or layups at the rim. So that's not
including their misses. And you talk about Joel being a rim protector without him out there, and Boban brings a little bit of that, but not so much. Today. They were getting a lot of plays at the rim with lobs to heartless and Layman and Amino players that you know, don't really strike fear. But oh boy, the way they were very effective here in this afternoon. Great game for them,
terrific third quarter. Not so much for the Sixers. Seventy sixers lose to Portland one thirty two, one fifteen and because of some of the shorthandedness with the roster and some of the things we heard Brett Brown say he was looking for referring to go small ball down the stretch after he felt like the bigger size lineup with boban Mannanovitch wasn't working. Mike Scott got a lot of run. Thought. You know, if you're looking at it was the best game,
you know, no doubt. Yeah, if you're looking for some bright spots or civil linings, you learn a little bit more about Mike Scott. And he showed what he can do, especially on the offensive end with a shot totally. And there was one play where he guarded Cantor and he locked him up and he did a great job. He runs the court and he gets a stand still three and you know, at the time I was talking with coach Brown again talks about and then is your form
from out there? And then is he steps at the nine, goes straight up, holds, the follow through, sticks the landing, buries a three. And that's why you brought him here. He brings toughness and he brings the ability to hit an outside shot. And yes he did. He played well. Ben played well Ben Simmons. I mean there was a sequence in the third quarter where Ben Simmons had two or three court length drives on an incredible ability. That's that's the number one thing he does. And they were
coming down and making terrific plays too. Like I said, great basketball theater, great great play. But if you're the six Ers and they're scoring at will, then that takes a little bit of the sizzle out of that end to end action. But that these guys are phenomenal athletes at both ends of the floor. Tremendous skill, JJ world
class skill as a shooter. They held him in check a little bit, as I said, and again, and I made this point earlier, but that's where Joel has missed on the offensive end, not just scoring, rebounding, rim protection. But he helps JJ Reddick in tonight or today. They did a great job running him off the line, and he missed. I think as a teammate, Joelle and Bead speaking of but Ben was terrific, so that was a positive.
But it's tough and this is a good team and under we talked about some underrated players, even though Lillard a multiple All Star. But as a group, I think they're not maybe given as much credit as they should be. Speaking of Portland, seventy six Ers drop a one thirty one fifteen decision of the Portland Trailblazers. Two games on the road next week, first up at the Pelicans on Monday,
than Oklahoma City on Thursday, New Orleans. Unfortunately, it's just been a little bit of an unhenged state in recent weeks. Of course if you read the NBA news you know why. But Anthony Davis has still been playing. They've got a back to back starting to night at Indian than they
come home to take on the Lakers. Before the seventy six Ers bigger part, they played the They finished the back to back today, So Davis still being used at times, and that's again given the state with the Sixers injury wise, that's going to be something to keep an eye on. Yeah, that game of the Lakers is tonight. Lakers even at five hundred after big comeback over Houston, Indiana. The feed in New Orleans last night and when Day his place, you know, he's what he's gonna play halfway, No, he's
gonna play all out. He's an incredible talent. And again drew holiday to the pain of underrated players and that's been a difficult place for the six years to play. And then and this is you know that game Thursdays on national TV. So here you are going on the road for five days to play two games. Welcome to the new spaced out NBA. By spaced out, I mean calendar wise where there are more days off built in and understandably so that's just the way it is. And
that'll ought to be a terrific game. You talk about the sex Us have never won there, they have never won in Oklahoma. So hopefully Joel will be back for that game, but there's no guarantees he again, he was gonna be the way it was reported by the team, the way they delivered it, I should say that he was going to be reevaluated in a week. So that's not absolute Locke that he's going to play on Thursday, because that would be a week after that All Star break.
But obviously that that would be big and so this is a this is a game. Like I said, I don't think you expected a fifteen point defeat here at home the Portland. But the Blazers played great and the Sixers got to get into the mix a little bit more. And like I said, Brian, hey, what do they average six Ers one hundred and fifteen points? They had one hundred and fifty points, but the Portland average is one hundred and eleven, and so my point is they had
one hundred and thirty. We talked about this Thursday. It's not the offense, it's the defense, and today that was glaring in this game where Portland really exposed the Sixers on many fronts at that end of the floor and especially offensive rebounding. No question, Tom. We will talk to you from the Big Easy on Monday one thirty one fifteen the final It was the trail Blazers over the seventy Sixers. Will step aside. One final segment coming up on the postgame show on the six Ers Rating Network.

But as for today's game, six is trying to split the season series against the Portland Trailblazers. They got off to a relatively decent start. Things started to pick up a little bit and t J McConnell came off the bench to provide a spark and here's a steel by who else? T J McConnell bust a gap in front
of Lellard and scores it steel driving lamp. Two point game gave the Sixers a two point lead to twenty three twenty one. The Trailblazers would be in front twenty seven five after twelve minutes of play. Boban Marnyanovitch was the hero from a Thursday's game in the win over the Miami Heat, he was tremendous. A little bit more difficult today, but he helped give the seventy sixers a
margin in their favor in the second quarter. And now here's Jimmy Butler to Bobono, Bobon going right at Anna's candor and a big man Bomi, I don't know right with a field goal thirty three thirty one sixers. With the leap sixers trying to stay in front down the stretch of quarter number two. JJ Reddick unable to find a stroke for most of the day, only one basket
and this was it. And here JJ for three that rattle spitz goes j J Reddick knocking down his first three sixers in thirty three percent from beyond three for nine. They had the lead at fifty four fifty three after that go in front bucket by JJ Reddick, but Nurkics helped the Trailblazers to a fifty nine to fifty six margin at the break. Sixers battling uphill and quarter number three, Jimmy Butler trying to make an impact. Jimmy Butler drives it oh right down the lane, Jimmy Butler with a
two hand slam. You can clap, you can pot the floor, but you gotta go Jimmy Butler. He gets a two hand stuff eight point game, but play call ato after time out by the Sixers. That made it seventy to sixty two Blazers in front. They would widen the gap from there. As this sequence demonstrated Portland Bowl one forty and the third Plazer's offensively work in front of their bench Canter screens for Lillard backdoor Eli Jake Layman puts it up an end. He curled from out top down
low right, the catch and the slam. He's been impressive. Another dish by Lillard. He was impressive indeed, finishing with eight points and eleven rebounds. The bench player out of Maryland seventy sixers. In the final quarter, they were trying what they could. Ben Simmons tied a season high on the offensive end. Simmons keeps it underhand, Scoop got it. They spread the floor, he attacks, twists it up with the right hand. Simmons the rebound, the drive and the
who That's what he brings to the table. It's an eighteen point game in the end. Of fifteen point margin in favor of the Trailblazers. They defeated the seventy Sixers one thirty to one. Fifteen final notes from the final stat sheet, seventy six or shot forty eight and a half percent from the field, the Trailblazers forty nine and a half percent, Portland with five three pointers the seventy
sixers with nine. Each team with a volume of free throws, Portland a little bit better twenty seven to twenty nine from the stripe seventy six or twenty two of twenty eight. Rebounding the key stat in this one, Portland had fifty three, the seventy sixers thirty three, and on the offensive glass it was a plus twelve margin for Rip City nineteen
to seven. Looking at some individual performers, Ben Simmons, with the game high scoring total of twenty ninety also had ten assists for another double double to go with seven rebounds. Spend was eleven of seventeen from the floor in seven of eight from the free throw line twenty points four. Tobias Harris, who had three three pointers, he had eight rebounds to be Butler with fifteen seventy six on five
of nine shooting plus two rebounds, two assists. Mike Scott a good day in his sixth game as the seventy six er. It was arguably his best fifteen points, five of eight from the floor, three or four from outside the arc. He had four rebounds. Yusef Nurkicz was huge for the Blazers twenty four points and ten rebounds. Damian Lowan with seventeen six and eight. CJ mccollumn with fifteen points,
including one three. Seventy Sixers with the loss are now thirty eight and twenty two on the season, while Portland blues to a thirty six and twenty three.
