Man. Midway through the third quarter of Thursday's game at Moda Center, things were looking really good for the seventy Sixers, leading by as many as eighteen points seventy eight to sixty. They were still in front by fourteen at the outside
of the fourth, and then things changed dramatically. The Portland Trailblazers would go on to score a string of twenty consecutive points, a twenty three to two run overall that turned the tide of the game at Moda Center and allowed them to emerge on top one fourteen to one ten and knock off the seventy Sixers. Brian Seltzer, with you staying up late for the postgame show, thank you
for checking it out. One fourteen one ten was the final score, a forty two point fourth quarter from Shabazz Napier. CJ McCollum use of narkis. The rest of the Portland Trailblazers out does the Sixers. In game number three or five game road trip, Joel Embiad had his months with twenty nine points, nine rebounds a career best six three pointers. Dario Scharitch was real steady throughout the night twenty five points nine rebounds, four assists. Simmons, he had stretches of dominance.
Seventeen points for him eight assists, four rebounds was not as present in the waning moments of the game, when the Trailblazers were able to seize control and turn things against the Sixers for a furious come from behind victory one fourteen, one ten. The final back out to the
Pacific Northwest we go Tom McGinnis rejoining us now. Tom, We talked during the pregame about how one of the objectives for the Sixers tonight was trying to build upon the good they accomplished Monday in New York City on Christmas. It seemed like they were there and those turnovers which the Sixers were doing such a good job of keeping under wrap for the better part of this game. They came back in that fourth quarter when they just couldn't get the shots to fall well, and they came back
in the l eight third as well. As we stipulated earlier during our postgame coverage, the Sixers had five when they were up by eighteen. They finished the game with fourteen. So during that spell, as you say, have a twenty two offensive run for Portland and then in the fourth even later, the Sixers ended up with nine during that stretch, and so it became again, you're not just turning the ball over and giving them run out opportunities, You're negating
yourself an opportunity for a possession and potential points. That plus the foul disparity was just telling in this game, Brian, what they ended up shooting forty nine free throws. It was just a tremendous different day. Out rebounded the Sixers by ten, and just a disheartening defeat for the Sixers to build up that lead, to have the momentum and once again watch it dissipate and have a turn into
a loss for the Sixers. To Portland's credit, on a night they were without two time All Star Damian Lillard, manned their backcourt come through with Napier and McCollum. And while Nurkic might not have had the biggest first half, he ended up with a great line over all twenty one points, twelve rebounds, and he was able to start to make his presence felt as the game went along too. Yeah, and I thought he had an up and down game.
I mean, he got mad that he got called for a foul, but it was his face boring into that of t J. McConnell's cheek that ended up getting that
nose injury or whatever. He had ended up with a bandage on it, and then because he didn't get a foul, he didn't change ends and then ended up following Robert coving You know, Brian, now that I think of it, that might have been when Covington hurt his hand, now that I think of it, that that was weird, weird the way he went over it was by their sideline in front of the Portland bench, on the fire sideline from our bandage point. He really chopped at Robert Covington.
It was It was really unusual, and he ended up leaving the game, but obviously came back, and that's right around the time where Covington left the game and did not return. So he scored his points. He was up and down off the line, but he was not really that impressive to me. He did have some moments during when they led defensively against him be where he had a couple of blocks. That part was impressive, but really to your point about McCollum, but he is really really good.
I mean, you know, the game it seems as though big guys have an advantage, but not when you got skills like CJ. McCollum and Damian Lillard, and like I said, to a lesser extent, Napier, he played like a mini Lillard in this game. He had a very impressive game, so fast off the bouts, so hard to guard, so hard for Sixers players to keep in front of them, and they helped turn the tide as much as anybody. Sixers lose in Portland Tonight one fourteen one ten split
the two game season series. Ben Simmons tom he had stretches in that second quarter in the third where he was able to essentially get one he wanted, driving to the rack and down the stretch. It seemed like Portland maybe keying in on him, and then the rookie going through some things as this one got away right. He started out one of five, then like you say, in
the second he really started to drive the boy. He makes three field goals in a row, but they sag off of him, daring him to take the outside shot. And yet he's still at times able to get to the basket, even with a defender getting into the lane and giving him that much room. But as you say, late in the game, they pack the paint, they send help,
and that's what happens. Oh, by the way, like in a postseason game where you're not getting to the wreck, you're forced to take outside shots, and a team that has an inability to shoot in the postseason from afire, it's real difficult sledding. It's very difficult. That's why you see. You know, Brett Brown calls the postseason a whole different game, and that's a little bit of a microcosm of I think what happened in the fourth quarter. And yeah, it's
tough because and Dari who had a terrific game. I think we should totally mention how solid he was for the Sixers. Reddick after a two point first half, came on big in the second half. But you know, you need multiple options, particularly when that clock gets late and Ben still has the ball, So that's certainly something to work through. I thought Joel was he had those threes, two were late, the one was a lucky bank shot from thirty six feet, but still cut the gap down
the stretch. And then he in that one on one battle when he again I made the comment when he tries to draw fouls and then the foul's not there.
Now he's put himself in an off balance position and trying to hit a bank shot from twelve to fourteen feet difficult to make even on balance against a good defender, let alone, like I said, when you're leaning and your shoulders aren't square and your off balance, and he got himself into that type of predicament multiple times when he didn't get called or get the call if you will.
So again, a tough takeaway for the Sixers to come out here and play so well in the second, well from the beginning of the game really into the third, and then again to have this occur where a big league gets away and you end up with a loss during a tough stretch record wise for the Sixers. Hard
to take. And it's on to the next one now for the Sixers, will be on Saturday in the Mile High City against the Denver Nuggets, a team that quietly time has compiled a pretty decent record at nineteen and sixteen, sixth in the Western Conference. They've been going it without their all star Paul Millsap, who they picked up in the offseason. And this is a team that can shoot the three and is pretty balanced well. And we talk about Nurkics. They traded him because they had a player
better than him. His name is Nikolai Yoki, and that with the young player Murray and Gary Harris, and I just mentioned Will Barton had twenty eight in an overtime defeat last night in Minneapolis and totally under the radar, but in the mix. In the West, always a difficult place to play. It's been a hard place for the Sixers to win. And as you say, first of a back to back, as they chare out for travel out to Denver to meet the Nuggets. Tom until Saturday. Thank you, Brian,
good night, good morning. Indeed one fourteen, one ten the final score Portland a forty two to twenty five fourth quarter effort over the seventy sixers and beat with twenty
nine and nine. Dario Starch excellent with twenty five points five three pointers, Simmons finishing with seventeen four and eight, But it was the likes of Shaba's Napier twenty three points, fifteen of them coming in the fourth quarter and CJ McCollum with the game best thirty four helping get the Portland Trailblazers past the seventy Sixers, a game in which the Sixers led by as much as eighteen. Well, here's some of Tom's highlight calls coming up on the other side.
This is the postgame show on the Sixers Radio Network. Seventy Sixers got a nice win on Monday on the second game of their five game road trip on to the Western Conference. Now for the next three games. Brian Seltzer with you from Sixers dot Com. Final segment of the postgame show. Here is how this one went tonight. The seventy Sixers got a nice boost early on behind Joel and Beads, taking them to an early thirteen to six lead, and bead relying on his outside shot to
help the Sixers cause. TJ McConnell closing off the first quarter in fine form. Sixers can get a two for one here. Here's t J McConnell in the lay stop baseline left pull up, got it from fifteen. McConnell swerves and squares up. Nobody was on a baseline left and he puts it in. T J McConnell with four points, two assistant a rebound. TJ McConnell doing some nice scoring
for the Sixers. As of late, Sixers were in front thirty to twenty seven going into quarter number two, and very quickly the Sixers got one of the top highlights of the night. And here's the steel by McConnell. Drive me Domina. He goes to it beat and there's a jab. There's a two point brod out by Joel at Bea as TJ. McConnell completely harassing Napier out top plucks it away for the steel and it beat follows with a slam. Not too long after that, these seventy sixers, other All
Star candidate Ben Simmons took over. Simmons stop starts, goes into the lane of artless, turns back to the right, shoots at left handed at in Ben Simmons came king over on offense forty to thirty seven and Simmons has now hit his last three in a row. He would score eight in succession during that stretch. Sixers lighted initially fifty one forty nine going towards the half, but the Trailblazers scored the final three points of the second quarter.
They were up fifty two fifty one going into intermission, but after Portland scored first opened the scoring in half number two. That is when Dario Schartz, Joel and bad Ben Simmons, JJ Raddick. Everyone was seeing the ball go through the hoop and that was a good thing. Simmons in particular. Here's Raddick in the Ben Simmons around one man puts it up and the turner Sandwich down low, couldn't get help from Abino and Ben with another drive,
good feed by the Sixers. Ben Simmons down the right side banks at fourteen points for Ben Terry Stots with a timeout that probably should have occurred. Two possessions to go, and the Sixers with the free throw from Simmons after the time out, would lead at sixty seven to fifty. Five minutes later, Dario Schartz scored five straight, putting the Sixers up a game high margin of seventy eight two sixty.
Now the Trailblazers snapped off a seven nothing run to make it a single digit game, but the Sixers closed out quarter number three strong, leading eighty five two seventy two. You're CJ. Excuse me, t J. McConnell step back shot on Nurkas in the air head in one point seven to go sixes by thirteen. It about a Napier. He'll simply hold a ball. McConnell knew he had to put a lot of arc on the shot with Nurkis there
and KEJ McConnell puts it in. So it was eighty five seventy two going into the fourth, the Sixers still in control. Not too long after that leading with a rebuilt McConnell over for you all, Bayless. The balls roll right to him and he picks it up. Here's a beat with it. Sixers with numbers over to JJ three foot him the air by Reddick. Bang, it's good. JJ. Reddick knocks it out. The Sixers get it three to make it a fourteen point lead. Eighty eight seventy fourth.
Things were looking good for the visitors, but then it was the Trailblazers, led by Napier and also CJ. McCollum Nurkitch involved as well, that spun off a nineteen nothing run part of a twenty three to two surge that vaulted the Trailblazers into the lead and in control of the game for good. Some late threes from JJ Reddick Joel Embiid made it close and interesting. Butt it was Portland that staved off the seventy sixers were a very
impressive come from behind four point win. Final notes from the final statuet Sixers forty eight percent from the field, the Blazers forty six and a half percent six or sixteen to thirty two from outside the arc. Ripped City just eight of twenty four seventy sixers outscored substantially by twenty six from the free throw line sixers or ten to fourteen the Trailblazers were thirty six of forty seven. Trailblazers won the glass plus ten plus three on the
offensive boards. Turnovers caught up to the Sixers down the stretch, eight of them coming in the fourth quarter, and the Trailblazers scored twenty points off these six ers fourteen turnovers. Individuals scoring game high went to CJ. Mccollumn with thirty four. He was held to five points back in Philadelphia on Thursday, the twenty second of November.
