The first time thirteen tries get it done against the San Antonio Spurs, their first victory versus the Spurs since February the eleven, two thousand and eleven. Tonight, defeating the perennial Western Conference title contenders by the final tally of one twelve to one ZO six Brian Seltzer with you
from six ers dot com. We are standing by and awaiting the postgame press conference of the victorious head coach Brett Brown, Ben Simmons, Big Finish, Joel and be at a late edition, but great, here's Brett Brown and progress everything I know, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. And you know, you pivot out of that when it gets to like the game time decision. It is that. And it's happened quite a bit, you know in Toronto, you know, you learn he's going to play or not tonight.
There was nothing in my mind that suggested he was going to play based on the swelling in his hand and what we saw at practice. He went out and had a good warm up. Then he felt quite good about himself and with about thirty five, you know, fifty or thirty six minutes on the clock, I meet the team at thirty five. It was announced to us that he felt good enough to play, and I think to Joel Embiid's complete credit. You know, he came in and
he surprised me. He actually made some shots, and if you saw the swelling in his hand, you wouldn't have thought that would have been the impact. He would have blocked shots, he would have rebound, he would have been physical defensively, but he actually still had some finesse and touched to his shot with his swollen right hand. But
it happened quick. It was completely unexpected, and I give him a lot of credit for playing through complete pain and trying to play in front of the Philadelphia fans and help his teammates. That's a gutsy effort. Mentioned that JJ made like thirty five seconds stuff, and he've also mentioned before just how forty his movement is within your offense. Well, what did you see on that play? That A lot
of it great? A little sliver there firstself. I mean, we we've been living in this kind of look all year. When it gets down to we call it crunch time offense. And usually you know, what about four minutes on a clock. I do some stuff with with j J and Joel and Ben and stack up you know, CoV and Diary on the other side, and just we have different looks and reads out of that. And uh, you know he could.
He commands so much attention and he's really as effective a screener as we have because his man doesn't leave and oftentimes, you know, it frees up Ben for straight line drives and that play, that situation, that environment you're speaking about, was born out of that type of look. You mentioned how he would just say, you know him
really big. You know. One of the challenges that we talked with the team about is we felt if we could have an advantage on the free throw line, free throw attempts and now let's going to make them, and if we could come in and win the turnover battle, that we would put ourselves in a position to win. If we didn't do that, we felt we can show all the tape we want, we can call whatever play we want, it's not going to matter. And we did win the turnover battle, and we did win the free
throw battle. And I think to your point, the thing that always attracted me with Ben Simmons is when you went to his LSU numbers. You know, he shot ten free throws a game. That's a big number in a forty minute game, and tonight when you look down, you know he shot fifteen free throws. That in itself is a huge win for me. Where he gets back to the line, it's a mentality more than it is a skill.
And that mentality of him attacking the basket and going to the free throw line then growing the confidence that you're referring to, that's a hell of a package and it starts with getting there. Pop founder seventy Sixers head coach Brett Brown some of his thoughts after tonight's one twelve on OH six victory over the San Antonio Spurs, the first for the Sixers over San Antonio since February
of two thousand and eleven. Ben Simmons a team high twenty six points, ten to fifteen from the foul line. He had his last three from the stripe, four of his last five, and they had big dunk off the sideline out of bounds player to give the Sixers a comfortable margin at one ten, one o four in the final minutes. Joel Ebiad was a question mark right up until game time. Twenty one points, eleven rebounds, four assistant four blocks, twenty points for JJ Reddick. Tom McGinnis is
standing bible here from him. Next, this is the post game showing the Sixers Raider Network. Seventy sixers can cross this awful list of things to do with the Brett Brown tenure a victory over the San Antonio Spurs one twelve to twent oh sixth the final from down here at the center, Brian Sell to with you from Sixers dot com. Joellenbad a gutsy effort, Brett Brown said, and hard to fault that description embad was listed in Brett
Brown's words, it's very doubtful. About an hour and a half before tipoff tonight, he was able to get out there and gave the Sixers monumental contributions. At twenty one points and eleven rebounds were bringing Tom mcguinnis, Tom, we saw some balance again from the Sixers for a second straight game. Wait, one little nugget. When I was a journalism student in college, we had to learn all the different for lack of a better fraid, gradiations of the
hospital jargon right like that, I don't remember. There's doubtful, very doubtful question. That's Jane and the NBA's definitely has you know, there's probable, but just kind of funny because everybody thought that he wasn't gonna play, but I get a kick out a very is as a that's a new level of concern, and it seems like based on what we've seen for the first two and a half months.
And this is not anything scientific or that we know for fact, but if Joel goes out there and he tests things and he's feeling good, there's a level of trust that's built up. And Brett Brown, as he said, cross his heart, you know, all the way to the end, he didn't think he was gonna have him beat tonight, and you have to think that that in some ways
set the tone for the Sixers tonight. His desire to come out there and play and Simmons was really big and setting the theme of aggression early on and then closing it out absolutely. We watched Brian we were doing that pregame hit that we do for the JumboTron here in arena, and Dwayne Jones has done such a great job working with Joel. Chris Babcock is part of the coaching staff, works with Joel exhaustively as well, and Joel look really good, you know, moving the ball and getting baskets.
So and that's part of what it's based on. But if you listen to him beat after the game in Phoenix, he was quoting he wants to be a warrior. He wants to play him he's been out so much so he's he wants to push through. And you know, I guess if he could close his fist and as they said, if it wasn't going to hurt him anymore. But obviously a great effort and certainly I would think helped the Sixers,
as you say, energize them. And you're right, Simmons was very aggressive early on, and there was a stretch there down in the end of the game. Brand he scored eight of the Sixers ten points. He had eleven points in the fourth quarter Ben Simmons and as a group the Sixers made eight of their nine free throws to
close it out. So again it was a struggle early on, one of ten from the field early in the fourth, but finished strong, kept the Spurs at Bay, got some stops able to keep them off the glass at the end. All Dridges Mills were just terrific in the fourth for them and a great, long time needed victory for the Sixers against the Spurs, and just before he moved on
from Simmons after this one twelve on sixth victory. I mean there was a moment there with about three minutes two and a half minutes ago when Gregg Popovitch and the Spurs started to intentionally fall him and it was a stretch. Correct me if I'm wrong. I think he went one for four or he missed three in a row, and then he finished things off by hitting four of
his last five from the line. Absolutely, and he had that big play where he got the ball down low and made the shot was called a goalten on LaMarcus Aldridge. He was fouled and he made that. That was a big secret. That's part of that eight of ten that we talked about. And you're right, I mean that exactly one of the times was exactly two thirty nine to
go and Pombovich was on the sideline. Like I said, at that point, it looked like he was out there guarding the way he was jumping around, he was really trying to get Burton's out the foul ben. And again I don't think Brett Brown's taking him out there Brett Brown, he wants this to be part of the learning curve. And Simmons celebrity made ten out of fifteen. I mean, I think you would take that, and so credit to him and a great job for the Sixers. Rennick had
a huge field goal. Joel, even though he didn't score big down the stretch, was big throughout the game and a nice win, albeit against the Spurs team that was resting a number of players. But the Sixers have got to get back on track here at home. They're getting better near five hundred overall, near five hundred at home, and let's face it, based on how they played for
a major chunk of December. To have now won three games in a row and four their last five against a Detroit team coming up on Friday, they've already beaten twice. Great opportunity to get right back in the mixed in the East and to finish the thing up. If you're a Sixers fan out there or someone who's a rooting interest in this team, you don't care who the Spurs had out tonight, because too long ago, this time last week, the Sixers were stuck in that one and nine stretch.
Now Here they are when you peel things back and step back. They've won three in a row and four out of their last five, and they have these next really big tests coming up between the Pistons number four in the East, and then you got Boston in London, Toronto on MLK Day and then up to Boston within about two weeks. Absolutely Celtics leading eighty one sixty eight over Cleveland tonight in a matchup between the top two teams, and these tonight in Boston. But first things first, it's
that Detroit game. And even though the Pistons are well ahead of the Sixers in the conference standings, if you win that game, you win the season series against them. And one of the ways for the Sixers to get back amongst the top eight is to beat the teams ahead of them, to beat the Washington's, to beat New York, to beat you know, all these teams in the mix that have you know, around eighteen nineteen wins like that, and that's how you make up a whole game, right there.
So playing good basketball, looking to continue that against Drummond and Detroit. They've had success, another great ground on hand. It should be an exciting night. Find your tickets at
stubub dot Com seventy Sixers over the Spurs. Tom againn has called it Tom enjoy the nights, all right, be safe and some of those highlight calls that Tom delivered tonight's your way, they are a common in just a matter of moments because the postgame showing the Sixers Raider Network seventy Sixers step up on the court for the first time in two eighteen, an opportunity to start fresh and a new in particular in their rivalry series with
the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs have dictated this series for quite some time, both here in South Philadelphia and in Texas, but the Sixers would be trying to capitalize on a night that the Spurs were without some key players. A key player was available for the Sixers, Joel Embiid. Another one was two at Ben Simmons, and both of them were involved in getting the Sixers off to a strong start. Time and throws it away another flip flop of turnovers, TJ to Ben Simmons down to night sim
of the Robert Tom hupping good. Ben Simmons with a fantastic food He's three of five. TJ drops it off and the Spurs have taken another time out. He heard the whistle in the background. Greg Popmitch not happy with the way things began, but all things considered for him in the Spurs it was only a twenty seven twenty two game in favor of the Sixers. After twelve minutes of play, the Sixers would open things up in quarter number two. Dario scharge doing some really positive work. Amir
Johnson back out to Simmons. The clock is at eight. Dario shoots it over gassault and that's good charge from range. His second trade Dario with eight. He and Rehnick of goodbuying for twenty and if yet it beat twenty eight of the Sixers forty five high scoring first half, Sixers lead by a dozen. They were up forty five to
thirty three. Their march would be sixty to forty nine going into intermission, and at the outset of the third quarter of the Sixers open things up to a game high sixteen point lead, and they were trying to nurse the double figure thing for as long as they could. Dario with it in the lane, back out to Simmons and now allob to Joel and Elliot Chap Burt Bead. He frows it down on Burnton's and a great beat by Simmons and a foul on the Spurs. If beat sent a screen around the foul line area and then
a reverse pivot actually got a screen by redneck. He runs down there and catches it a straight line cut into the basket and Simmons of the recognition up top and if you drop someone into the center, so I do a doe context for what it beat status was or wasn't going into tonight's game. There was absolutely no way you could really tell aside from a few moments.
And he was feeling any effects in that spreen right and he had four blocks in the opening quarter, and he was more than willing to go in side tonight, as he displayed on that sequence. But things would change as Patty Mills would get going for the San Antonio Spurs. They cut the depsit down to four eighty eight eighty four going into the fourth Sixers offense stalled a bit
at the outset of the frame. The Spurs got into within the possession ninety three ninety Ben Simmons with an answer, Well, Dariol Hill score Dario on the lane, Dariel double Dario off to the near side, cross scorts get billis downlow, Ben Simmons fakes on one man goes up, Patty puts it in. Ben Simmons downlong against their two bigs per times at Aldridge and Simmons with a much needed bill goal.
Well and speaking of LaMarcus Aldridge, he was a huge factor and helping the Spurs take the lead twice in the final minutes the fourth including one oh three to one oh one. With two and a half minutes ago. Ben Simmons was found intentionally knocked down both three throws, then a big play and review that was upheld. In this one, Simmons drew a foul and roots the rack.
There was a goaltending call that was upheld that made it one oh six one h three six or JJ Reddick big basket forty five seconds ago sixes by two. Simmons up to Joel and beat holding it at the top of the arc hesitating, doesn't where to go with it. He looks back door to Reddick. JJ shoots it up at the J. J Reddick scars thirty six seconds to go sixes by four. Reddick delivers little left wing one o eight one oh four sixers gotta stop. They've been
awesome and inbound plays this season. And here was a huge and bead will screen for Covington and Reddick Simmons to Covington down low man the Spurs double Robert coming. Then he goes to bed first lap and the Sixers are gonna beat the Spurs. Great feed by coming toon Simmons with the stuff. He's been really good in the fourth, and yes he was, and yes the seventy Sixers did
beat the San Antonio Spurs. As we get in the final box scores, six Ers forty five percent even from the field, the Spurs a touch under forty five percent for the evening six or seven of twenty two from outside the arc San Antonio. Eight of twenty five Sixers got to the free throw line. That was nice to see, thirty three of forty three, outscoring the Spurs by thirteen from the stripe on twenty more attempts. That was vital
Sixers plus two on the glass. They committed just thirteen turnovers to San Antonio sixteen, but twenty three points was what the Sixers scored off of turns in tonight's game. Individual notes, Ben Simmons a game high time twenty six, Patty Mills also at twenty six, but we're focusing on Ben Simmons the Sixers postgame show. After all, he was eight of eighteen from the field, but howbout this ten to fifteen from the free throw line, including his last three and four out of his last five. He had
five boards, four assists, three steals on the night. Joel embiid Gutsie, as Brett Brown said, twenty one points, eleven rebounds, four assists, all four of his block shots in the opening quarter. He was a plus sixteen for the game, and Dario Scharch plus nineteen overall with fifteen points two three pointers. He had seven rebounds and an assist, helping balance things after the Sixers. Jj Reddick with twenty points as well, three lead changes, six ties tonight in a
two hour, seventeen minute game. Another sellout crowd down here at the Center. Twenty thousand, six hundred and forty two.
