This podcast is part of the seventy Sixers podcast Network search seventy sixers podcast wherever you get your pods. Who welcome into Coach Check, the official podcast of the Delaware Blue Coats, the NBA G League affiliate of the Philadelphia seventy Sixers. I'm Matt Murphy. Quick reminder about coat Check appearing every other Thursday in the podcast feeds of both the Delaware Blue Coats as well as the seventy Sixers

podcast Network. And the guest on this episode another good one, and we are back to player guests on coach Check. It is Blue Coats rookie Terry Harris, and I always mentioned the date that we're recording. They've all been relatively recent, so it's not that important in this case, but it kind of is for you, Terry, because we're recording this on April twenty third, and just about a month past

your birthday. So happy belated birthday March twentieth. I know it's a crazy time, but how was your birthday this year? Birthday was? It was different and I was a different experience. I wasn't able to go out, go to a restaurant and celebrate it, you know, I wasn't able to be around my parents, but I was still able to get to love and get calls from everybody. But you know, we're under the circumstances of the the time we're in with the quarantine and the coronavirus. You know, I'm just trying

to stay inside, stay safe. But it was still a good birthday, can't complain. Definitely an interesting time for sure. Really looking forward to our conversation today the rundown for the listeners out there, it's pretty much exactly what we've been doing. We've had Xavier Silas on recently, Haywood High Smith before that, Michael Bryson and Jared brown Ridge will get into Terry's background, his upbringing, high school, college ball, all of that, and we will shift into our healthy

lifestyle segment presented by Christiana Care. Of course, as doctors, nurses, and caregivers, and as neighbors and friends, Christiana Care is a partner in everyone's journey to greater health and well being. Why do they do it for the love of health? Visit Christiana Care dot org. We will transition from there into this season, Terry's first professional season out of college, and then we will get to our at the buzzer questions towards the very end, which should be fun as always.

But let's start with your background. As I mentioned, dix Hills, New York. So the first question is a fun one. Do you say Onlong Island or in Long Island? I say in Long Island? Really, because isn't Onlong Island Long Island thing to do. I gotta let it flow naturally, So I'm him like the Bluecoats are playing the nets tomorrow on Long Island. Yeah. Interesting, I thought that was an youre fire on. Huh Okay. How often do you

tell your teammates about Long Island bagels? Definitely? Like when we were in Long Island, I was trying to tell them, Mark, you ever try to if you ever want a bagel or a slice of pizza or a Delhi Sandward, you have to have it in Long Island. That's that's that's what we're going for. See. That's good because not only did you corroborate my statement about bagels, but you also said in Long Island like two or three more times just in that sentence. So that's funny. Um. Obviously your

family a big family filled with athletes. What was that dynamic like growing up definitely competitive, but it was also like it was just a great environment because like you know, you everyone was playing, whether my older sisters to my older brothers, and you know, my dad was coaching us. So it was just, uh, you know, each sleep played basketball, and it was just it was just a great environment that everyone was able to help each other out and

learn from each other and compete against each other. So you know, it was definitely it's definitely amazing to grow up in that type of in that type of environment and list out all your siblings because you guys are all with the letter T, right. Yeah. So my younger sister, she's the youngest, Tory Harris. She's playing at Saint Bonadventures next year. Um, it's me and h Tyler Harris. He played he played in Argentina this summer, I mean this year.

And then my older and then my older brother Tobias plays at the Sixers. And my older sister to Sia, who plays she played at Saint John's and played a year overseas. And then my older brother, my oldest brother, tj. He he played high school. But he's kind of like, uh, he's like the brains of the family, Like he's like, he's a super smart one. So we all go to him and ask questions or whatnot. And you know, my dad, who's my current my agent right now, and my mom.

She didn't play basketball either. Nice and I wanted to talk about to see in particular here because she seemingly started at all kind of at the next level maybe with basketball or at least had a big impact. She actually played the first few years of her college career locally for Delaware Blue Coats fans at the University of Delaware. What kind of impact did she and does she continue to have on you? Yeah, since she knows the game really well, she's and she's one of the hardest workers

I know, always in the gym man. You know, she kind of told me at a young age that like repetitions is what's gonna, you know, help you perfect your craft. So seeing her doing it, seeing her um, you know, get a division on scholarship, just showed me at a young age, like, with hard work and dedication, what that

can get me in the long run. So definitely, she definitely led the path for you know, the whole family in the basketball right and now at half Hollow Hills West High School, your high school in New York, you got to team up with your your older brothers, Tobias of course with the seventy six ers now and Tyler at one point. I believe, how was that were you in eighth grade? How was that whole dynamic and the difference between all your ages and then eventually playing together

or nearby at the high school level. Yeah. So in the eighth grade, I was on the JV team for most of the year, and there was it was the last regular season games, so they called up a couple of the JV players and having get called up, and and you know, during the game, we were just we just began to start blow out, blowing out the team. I forgot what team game. I can't believe I forgot it though, But but and then the coach subbed me and it was me, Tyler, and Tobias all on the

same court at once. And I just remember Tobias and Tyler were just like doing whatever they could to get me my first my first varsity basket buckets. So like they do me one pass and like, I don't know, I think I missed it real bad. In fact, I was like playing my first varsity game with my brother's

a little nervous. But then after that, uh, they was like, get it to Terry, get to Terry, and uh, I threw an up, shout shout went in and I don't know, we were just all happy and it was probably one of the funniest days of my life to play with them. And I remember my dad and my mom were there too. Was just so happy and it was just like it was one of the best feelings ever. And hopefully one day we can get to re experienced that or relived

that again and be on the same court again. Yeah, that is an awesome story, and there's plenty more to get to with your career. We're gonna get to your college career in just a second. But I'd be remiss not to ask quickly during this quarantine time about your brother Tobias's hair, because he has posted it on social media saying that he's not cutting his hair or shaving until he's back on the court. Are you buying that? Yeah?

I think I am viz. I mean, I know for a fact he can't cut his own hair, so you really can't get American now. It's completely unsanitarian, right, I know other people have I don't know whoever's with them cutting it, But I guess we're gonna see what he ends up looking like over the next weeks and months,

so we will we will certainly see there. But I mentioned college, and you're a guy who had a couple different stops Houston, Baptist, Eastern Michigan and you finish your college career at North Carolina A and T. What are some of the most memorable games from your college career? I know you you did have seven threes last college season in a game again locally for our Delaware audience at Delaware State or I don't know if it was home against Delaware State, but against Delaware State you had

seven threes. But what are some of the games that stand out from your college career at any of your stops? Yeah, I think, um, that was probably one of my um that that game at Delaware Data had seven threes, but I think, um, who was it against against Presbyterian College, I had the record. I think it was it was actually another seven threes on one a half, but they were all consecutive, so that was probably like and that

was that was last season. Yeah, that was last seasons so like yeah, to you know, just to hit a record and and I remember so another thing with the family, my sister to see it would had she had the family record for I think it was six consecutive three points in a game, so I was able to top that by one more three point it was seven and a half. So I was always Now I'm able to say, Okay, now I'm the best year in the family because I

did this. Wow. Yeah. And you had a few games in Delaware this year where you were knocking down some three a couple of games at home and a couple on the road as well, and we will talk about your first pro season coming up after our healthy Lifestyle segment, which we will get into right now. Our Healthy Lifestyle segment is brought to you by our friends at Christiana Care And just a quick shout out again to all of the healthcare professionals out there doing their thing on

the front lines during this time. And if any of our listening audience didn't see the announcement that the Bluecoats partnered with the Wilmington Blue Rocks and minor league baseball team in Wilmington and they're doing a joint T shirt fundraiser, so you can find out more info online sixers dot com slash Bluecoats, a T shirt fundraiser, all the proceeds helping healthcare workers out there on the front lines. But let's jump in with some questions. What are you doing

for the love of health? The slogan of Christiana Care at this point in time. An example could be, I know, coach Silas has a peloton and we talked to Heywood high Smith a couple of episodes to go about running locally in Wilmington's So what are you doing for the love of health? I love of health. I'm definitely keeping six feet away from everybody, and I'm running, trying to eat healthy, trying to stay in shape. Yeah, that's pretty

much it. What other types of workouts have you been doing that maybe people out there can add to their routine on top of going for a walk or going for a run, anything else that you have that you're able to do it this time? Yeah, push ups, set ups, who ab circuits. When I'm running, I you know, try to get half mile in, h get a get a you know, good number of squats in, get a good number of squat jumps in, you know, just just mixing it up with a different mixing it up and trying

as much as I can. And have you still been able to get through to Haywood about the running circuit or was that like a one or two time thing? It was one or two time thing. But hey, I think I think Haywood left ware. But when he's back to using to get a run in or whatever, But I see he's still he's on the app. So he posted here and there about his miles. He's definitely still doing it in his miles and in Baltimore or wherever he's at. Yep, A relatively local guy himself, being from Baltimore.

But let's talk about this season. Um, it started in terms of at least the summer with a six or summer league birth for you on the roster, Um, what were the highlights of playing being a part of the six er summer league team? I think the whole one. My highlight was just the whole experience, you know, being in that environment. Uh, you know, venturing into my professional path and going against you know, the top the top rookies in the top young guys in the NBA is

just one of the just a great overall experience. I learned a lot, uh started to learn about the NBA field NBA style to play, and I felt that it just it was a way to jump start my career.

One thing now that if we're talking about the season in Delaware, the G League season, one thing that fans might have been able to notice on the road fans and road arenas or even the ones at the field house, is you working with coach Silas, who I mentioned we had on the podcast during the last episode, working out with him before games and things like that. I just want to talk about player development with this coaching staff in the Sixers organization, specifically in Delaware. What stood out

about the player development process with the Blue Coats. I feel like the player development they're really hands on. So I think Old Style is more than just teaching me and telling me something. He would really he would get on the court and play with me and like and like give me like real game like experience. You know some games where if I wasn't going to play too much, if I didn't play too much, you know, he'd make

sure that I would. I was playing one on ones with him or playing one on ones with other players. Just seeing you know, that that game feel every day and definitely pushed me, pushed me hard every day and you know, teach me different things and just you know, get the mental aspect of my game together as well. And uh, definitely that's some stuff that you know, I

wasn't ever received as much in college. And it was definitely great, you know, coming into this, coming into this environment and having that and coach Silas being freshly removed from his own playing days. He can still go, right, those guys can go. Yes, you can go. Don't no, don't no, can get you guys full Yeah. Yeah, but he did say in our interview that he did enjoy

the transition to coaching this year. Um, but definitely he's very fresh off of his playing days, so it was always fun to see you guys battling before games and things like that. Now, in your transition from college to the pro ranks, what area or areas do you think you improved in most this past season. I feel like I quys and just starting to learn the game and learn different aspects of the game and the whole you know, being able to watch and you know, see guys play

and you know, just learn this whole whole system. You know, it's a complete different system in college. So I would think you know, just just my learning and you know what to see what I'm capable of on the court was probably my band main um, you know, I mean

thing that I learned from this season. We'll have more with Terry Harris in our at the Buzzer segment momentarily, but first, Nomore's Sports Medicine believes that highly personalized one on one physical therapy for young athletes is paramount to a speedy and complete recovery. Learn more at Nemour's dot org slash PT. All right, Terry, time to go at the Buzzer and I kind of was trying to feel

out this last segment. A lot of podcasts will have specific questions that they ask their guests on a weekly basis, and they're the same ones. We might tweak these as we go along, but some of them are are new that our previous guests haven't had, so let's just try them out. Let's talk about travel first. What was what was your favorite road city to visit so far? And why? I guess you can say Long Island if you want, but that would kind of be the easy way out,

So maybe give us two if you can. I'm definitely like Toronto a lot Toronto was definitely just being in Canada for the first time and uh, just a good vibe in that city. So I liked that a lot. And the other city, I would say, Maine, I like, you know, the crowd that they bought in games was it was a good energy. So, you know, Maine in Toronto, just two cities that I like, I like visiting. For those who don't know, Maine had Taco Fall this past season on a two way contract with the Boston Celtics.

I know he definitely helped their merchandise sales with his jersey, but their crowds were really good as well. This next one, I think there's some interest or at least I find interest in in uniform numbers, jersey numbers. Um and I know you were number one this year and Tobias has a really good story about his jersey number and this could change for you. But what's the story behind either your current jersey number one or your all time favorite

jersey number? And there was no big story behind one. I usually like, I don't know. I used like single digit numbers and one happened to be like one of those. But I'm usually m I don't know. I'm usually five. That's like, that was like, that's my main number, but ummun for this year with X number. Yeah, you know, the vet's got to get that first. That's all right though, But uh oh five was I used to get five because I'm a fifth child and uh in the family

that was? That? Was that all behind five? Well? Something else for single digits that I think people consider at the pro level as you can work six, seven, eight, or nine rotation as well college you can't. Yeah, right, So I mean you still went with one that would have been legal in college with number one, But of course that could change over the course of your career obviously, depending on who's on what roster and all of that. Let's let's get to the next couple before we round

it out. This one will be our fun fact question, and it's before the year in Delaware. You guys listed a bunch of fun facts and you said you're hidden talents are drawing and painting. What do you draw and how much have you been drawing or painting right now? I honestly anything really. I usually to sketch a lot of stuff out When college I minored in art, so I definitely did a lot a lot of I did a lot of drawing and a lot of painting. I

had a couple of painting glasses to drawing classes. So it's something that i've you know, I've done since high school. I've been lots of art school art classes in high school and uh kind of like a little side talent that I got and um during quarantine, I've you been doing a little bit here and there and just draining my sketchbook and went out. But you know, every time I want to be a little creative, I you know, put something together and sketsnd out. That's yeah, that's all

behind that. I was more of a color rather than a drawer growing out in art class. But this last question at the buzzer might not be one that gets asked to future guests because it has to apply to that person and if I've seen them do things on this app. But TikTok, I've seen that you're somewhat or at least you were at one point active on TikTok. So where is your TikTok career at right now? My TikTok I tried. I enjoyed TikTok a lot. I think

it's it's really addictive. As soon as you get on the app, be over here they scrolling, we're watching videos. But I've had a couple. I had a couple of videos that've done that quite a little bit of success. And I don't know. I try to do like the trends, the fun stuff and have you still been doing them? Here and there? Me and my girlfriend we did the TUTSI slide with Drake challenge. Okay, I haven't seen your version of that yet, but I think I'm gonna check

it out and everybody else shit too. Yeah, it's good. What's your TikTok name? I think it's a t cash with three ahs. All right, all right, we'll write that down, all right, Terry, you did you did well with our new at the buzzer questions there, and I really appreciate the time that's gonna do it for us here on coach Check. But thanks a lot for giving me the time and best wishes to you and your family during this this crazy time. Thank you, I appreciate it. Thanks

again to the listeners out there of Coach Check. We'll be back again every other Thursday in the podcast feeds. Thanks again. That was who coats Rookie Terry Harris and I'm Matt Murphy until next time, take it or leave it at the coach check
