¶ Introductions
Hey, it's your old pal Slim, and this is 70 Momentum, a podcast for movie lovers just like you. Disclaimer at the top of the show, we are not experts, but we do love watching movies. With me each and every episode is my close friend and artist, Danny Haas. Hello. and our close friend and spiritual advisor, Partalexis. Spiritual advisor today, animal magnetist tomorrow? Every movie that we cover is connected to a theme for that month, and this time it's 70mm goes international.
We're only covering movies from the Letterboxd Top 250 International Films list. And you can use the chapters in your podcast app to skip to our main discussion this week. It's my pick from 1997 and Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Cure. But the big story tonight, fresh on my desk, off the wire, back in theaters this June, one of the greatest franchises ever. Jackass coming back.
Yeah. Wait, with a new film? Brand new film. Getting the band back together. Oh. Johnny Knoxville. Fresh as ever. He's got great hair right now. I'm assuming he'll be taking part. He's hosting like a TV show now, right? Is he? Does he host Fear Factor or something? Oh, that seemed about right, I guess. Anyway, they'll be back, Proto. Where were you when Jackass was on TV and in theaters? God. Way back.
You know, I don't think I've seen any of the jackass movies. No. What? Yeah. But we definitely snuck some jackass on MTV when my parents were averted from the TV. The television. But what's the... Is there a subtitle to this movie yet? Jackass Minus One? Something like that? Here we go. Here we go, folks. I don't think there is a subtitle yet, but stay tuned. I heard that there was another thing that just came over my desk again. Thanks, Dale.
Bam Margera has signed a deal for archival footage use. He will not be in the film, but there will be archival use of his footage in the film. Oh. Fresh. Daniel, what about you? Were you watching Jackass growing up? It had to have been four minutes for you. I had to sneak it, but I did see it, and I did see the big ones. I saw the movie. But yeah, my parents were definitely not allowing me to watch Jackass with them knowing. Jackass changed my life.
On MTV? We know. I mean, I feel like we're talking about you watching a four-hour Bam Margera documentary on YouTube last year around this time. Just seeing the rise and fall of Bam. And maybe Rise Again. I think I watched more of his show. What was that? Was that just called BAM? I honestly cannot remember. It's on the tip of my tongue. BAM something. Yeah. BAM. Anyone in chat know the BAM show title?
King Bam. All I remember from the Bam Margero show is him pumping the band Him. H-I-M. I think the Him band got him into... He became like an alcoholic. Viva La Bam. Viva La Bam. What a banger name. Is anyone born before Viva La Bam? I don't think so. Is that why it took so long for someone to answer that question? Jesus. But anyway, yeah, love Jackass.
I mean, you talk about formative. When they visit that toilet store. Formative. I mean, I was in high school, I think, when Jackass was going on. So they're doing all the golf cart stuff. No, me and my buddies are like, are we? Like, this is happening. You know, we're the dummies that are watching this saying like, this looks like a lot of fun. Maybe we should do this. It is very good we weren't high school friends.
Are we buying a $5,000 go-kart? You don't buy it. You borrow it on the golf course. What's the worst that can happen? That's a great question. So this is... 70MM goes international month. The fourth week of this month is up to a vote from our patrons. And Proto, you posted the vote on our Patreon. Can you give us the, remind us of the selection for the final week and maybe give a little tease as to how the vote's going? Absolutely slim. International vote.
is live on Patreon. You can see it there. And we got our three B picks live in the vote. Bicycle Thieves, The Green Ray, and The Passion of Joan of Arc. Those are the three picks. And it looks like Bicycle Thieves is in the lead by 14 points at the moment, Slim. It's got a lead over Joan of Arc. But the tide could turn either way. We're reaching our...
Our magnitude of our votes, I think, you know, the lines are growing shorter, but there are still your votes still matter. So if you are listening and haven't voted yet, get over to Patreon and put your vote in. I mean, they're. the discussion is electric in the in the comments if i can say so you know ezra said italian neorealism easy choice okay um tom said i picked the one i hadn't seen other two are mid
Okay. It's a little disrespectful, Tom. I think any of these movies would be fantastic for us to cover. Adam said it was a no-brainer pick. So there's a lot of strong feelings one way or another, you know. But your vote matters. It sounds like people are out on France. After last week. Yeah. Very down on France anything. The people are speaking up. As well they should. We're sorry, France. As well they should.
uh so stay tuned next week what's next week it's proto's pick once upon a time in the west just a reminder streaming on canopy as of right now okay wonder if that left criterion we'll have to check uh Dale, can you check on that while we're recording? He's pulling it up. He's pulling it up. Adam and Robert joined our Patreon this week. Got access to longer uncut episodes. We do like a whole second half of this show, folks. Uncut. All bets are off.
We get crazy in the post show. Prado teased earlier off air that he's got a big update to share. Yeah. In the post show. Major. Did you watch any movies this week you want to talk about? Let's see. Super Mario Bros. Oh, yeah. We got back in the Super Mario Bros.
¶ What we watched
My youngest, my six-year-old, he wanted to watch it. So I sat down with him. I watched it. You know, I'm excited for this sequel. If people didn't know, we have a new Mario Brothers movie coming out, I think in April. So we were talking about it tonight. You know, we're counting down the months to this sequel. Chris Pratt back at the helm. Hey guys, just stop real quick and pray with me. Yeah, sure, Chris. Lord, you say be still and know that I am God.
Psalm 4610. Be still and know that I am God in this moment. Please, Lord, calm my restless mind. Quiet my anxious heart. Thanks, Chris. Amen. Yeah, so Mario Brothers April sequel. I think Josh Safdie is in it as well. Why? I think I recognized his voice from the trailer. So he'll be in the picture. That's very exciting. You know, I give Mario Brothers three stars. God, he's laughing at himself. I think Josh Shafty was in that.
You didn't even miss a beat. He didn't miss a beat. I don't think I've seen the Super Mario Brother movie. I did see the trailer for the new one. A lot of excitement. I mean, isn't that the highest grossing animated movie ever made? That Super Mario Bros. movie? I believe it. I think Zootopia 2 passed it. What did? Zootopia 2. Never heard of it.
God, I hate you. What else, bro? What else are you watching? That's it. That's really it. Yeah. All right. Let me tell you about something I watched today. Yeah, we really need to get into it. There's just so much buzz around this franchise, this Greenland movie. There's no buzz, but please. Gerard Butler. There's a Greenland 2. Listen, Gerard Butler maybe has the best agent in the biz.
This guy just makes these hits for the everyman. And I am that everyman out there. Right. Okay? And this is just catnip for me. He's making How to Train Your Dragon. He's making Den of Thieves. He's making a plane. He's making Angel Has Fallen. Den of Thieves won. London Has Fallen. You know, this is like... This is the Steven Seagal for the modern age, I feel like. Oh. Gerard Butler. He's carrying like three franchises on his back right now. He is. What's the other ones? I just named them all.
has fallen. There was three different franchises is what you just said? Greenland. These aren't all the same franchises? No, those are different movies. Yeah. How to Train Your Dragon. You name it, he's got a franchise.
Anywho, Greenland, like I heard that there was a Greenland, Greenland one made a ton of money and everyone was like, I've never heard of this movie. What is this? Who's watching these movies? And I think they're all just like, I guess, middle-aged men going to see these movies. But it's about... Gerard and his family, you know, he's estranged from his wife. He's trying to make it work. They got a big barbecue for his son planned. Unfortunately, there's a giant asteroid headed to Earth.
It's bigger than they thought. And they have to get moving. There's this thing where I guess there's like a presidential alert that he gets on his phone and his TV. It was kind of cool that like you've been selected to go to the bunker. Only you and your family are allowed to go like leave now. What if you're not watching TV? And it went to his phone too. Oh. And so they have to like leave the party. It's like all awkward. All his friends are there. So I was getting kind of deep impact.
vibes a little bit from those decisions needing to be made. They have to try to get there. His son has diabetes, though, and they don't allow... people with medical conditions to come into the bunker. They get separated. It's a whole deal. I had a great time. Greenland.
It sounded like you had a question, Dan. Do you have a question? Because I have a question. I was about to make a statement. I was making sure you didn't star it just in case we want to cover this for the podcast. I didn't star it. That's what I said. I was making sure. Oh, is that a sign? Gerard Butler Month.
Okay, because I was going to ask, like, if you don't have any stars, but if you can't give any stars, can you maybe, I mean, you mentioned deep impact, which to me, that's like, we're talking like four-star tip. Yeah, that's the pinnacle. We're not reaching deep impact. territory. Okay, okay. But I did tear up at one point. On the diabetes? Diabetes. It's real. Okay.
So I think Greenland 2 is them trying to make their way in the world after what happens in 1. So that's in theaters right now. I think it opened this weekend. Or, I don't know, recently. Only in theaters. Stay tuned. What about you, Danny? What are you watching? I don't know. I don't even know at this point. Let me look. I watched three movies outside of the Stranger Things finale, which I loved.
Made to the theater with Casey and we watched Marty Supreme. Whoa. The new Safdie vehicle. Josh directed this one. I get it. I understand why Timothy's getting nominated. He's pretty incredible in it. I think Proto had said at one point it's like a spiritual sequel. to Uncut Gems or something like that. And you can feel it. You can feel the vibe. You can feel the energy, Uncut Gems energy. It doesn't quite get to that kind of stress level that Uncut is doing, but also Timothy's amazing in it.
Yeah. I had a great time. It was a fun ride. What was your star rating for that? Five. Oh, my. I had a great time watching that film. Do you think Oscar will come calling for Tim? I mean, maybe. Honestly. Honestly. China. Who does the dude from the Entrepreneur Show play in this? Everyone on Reddit is pooping about him being in there. Oh, Mr. Wonderful. He plays like a, he's a rich billionaire mogul that owns a pen company.
A pen company? Pen. Writing pen. Rockford Pens or something like that. His wife is Gwyneth Paltrow. He bagged Gwyneth Paltrow? Well. They've been married for like 30 years. Also money. She's an actress. She's a former actress in the film.
I'm not going to say anymore. It's spoiled. I didn't ask anymore. That's fine with what you told me. Are you planning on seeing it? Either of you. Streaming? I'm going to wait for streaming on that one. You're talking about Marty Supreme? Marty Supreme still, yeah. I would love to see it. Yeah, I don't know if I'm going to make it to the theater. The Shafties did it again. Just one of them. Just Josh. Will they ever team up again? I don't know if they need to.
You're saying they won't. They don't have to. Well, you know, when you go down the route of the Smashing Machine and then one other does Marty Supreme, it's like they're going in different directions with their careers. So I'd cut the other one off as well. What if Josh directs a movie starring Benny? Ben. Hmm. What if? It'd be interesting. I feel like Ben's more, he wants to be an actor. I get heavy actor vibes from him.
I think he enjoys the... He likes being in front of the candlelight. He's in a lot of movies. Yeah, he really is. He's in the new Christopher Nolan, I think. He plays like one of the centurions. Okay. Spoilers. There's Centurions in that movie. Trailer spoilers. I never read the book, everybody. Sorry, before anyone attacks me. And he's Bowser Jr., like I mentioned earlier. He's working hard. He's a hard-working man. Working hard.
I started my hater-lovers movie 70mm journey this week. 52 movies, 52 weeks. This week, the theme was Lynchian. A Lynchian film. And I watched Cynic Douche New York. And I gave it one star. Schenectady. Schenectady. Schenectady, New York. Is it a real place? Phonetically, I said it. I apologize. I'm saving that gif, star gif. Get into it. I mean, I did try to warn.
You let me star this one. You let me star this one because you never want to cover this one on the podcast. We're not covering that movie. It's Charlie Kaufman directed 2008. Phyllis Seymour Hoffman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michelle Williams. Tom Noonan, big, big, big, big cast. I hated this film. I mean, Philip Seymour Hoffman really is incredible in it.
Watching his performance is honestly the only reason I didn't DNF this one. And I think it looks great. I mean, it still looks like a great film, but the whole surreal aspect of it... I could not connect with. I don't connect with surreal art in general. Needs to be real. It's a way of telling. It's a way of storytelling or something that I don't enjoy. And so this film is very surreal and it gets there quick, real quick. And it's the entire film. So it just wasn't, it wasn't my bag.
for this film. But it's, you know, I'm off to my journey this year. I'm off to a good start, I think. Only way to go but up. For anyone who's considering driving off the road right now because of the conversation, I just want everyone to know, I love Cynic Douche. I gave it five stars and a heart. I thought it...
It felt like part of me. I laughed the whole time. I had a delightful time. I'll cover it. You guys won't cover it. I'll make a new podcast and I'll cover myself. One of one with somebody. Just make it yourself on the other end. Just cut it together. All right. Is it time to get into the main course? Episode 293 from 1997.
¶ Cure
cure this was my pick for 70 mm goes international um wow what a month so far folks i agree what a freaking month Bro, what's this movie all about? Detective Takabe works in Tokyo and is investigating a series of inexplicable murders. The connection between them being, after the killing... The killer carves an X into the chest and throat of the victim. The killers confess to the crime but cannot explain why they did it. The killings continue until a man named Mamiya is connected to the killings.
who appears to have no short-term memory and an obsession with hypnosis. Meanwhile, Takabe cares for his wife who suffers from psychosis. As he tries to solve the murders, His responsibilities and reality begin to overwhelm him, leading to a shocking conclusion. Cure. Thank you. I was wondering if that was coming. Sorry. I was waiting to interject. You're hypnotized.
I'm sorry. Let's see. All right. So this was my pick. I wanted to change it up. Let's get some thriller horror vibes this month. It's been much too long. So having said that, you know, psychological thriller, if you had to remove one film from your four faves and replace it with a psychological thriller, what might that movie be? Oh, man. A two came to mind for me. Right off the bat, it's Vertigo. I would lean Vertigo for Psychological Thriller.
But then really Get Out. I think Jordan Peele's Get Out would be top of my list. It would make my top four for psychological thriller. Golly. What year did Get Out come? Feels like an eternity ago. 2017. Geez. We're almost at 15 years since that movie came out. Yeah. Frodo, what about you? Two came to mind as well for me. But the one I had a five star, but then I had a four star. And I think of psychological thrillers, the movie that I keep coming back to.
Starring Mommy. Black Swan. I knew it. Black Swan. I've never seen it. I freaking knew it. I can't star it now either, so I have to wait. You can watch it. You just can't star it. I just can't star it. That doesn't take away your... enjoyable, you know, experience watching the movie. Dropping a one star on Letterboxd is enjoyable. Alright, if it's a one star, you can drop it. Okay. But if you like it, let's hold back. Bart, have you seen Perfect Blue? No.
That's the movie that, like, has... Oh, the animated movie? The anime? Oh, yeah, I have seen that. Yeah. Oh, that's a good one. Is that yours? I was thinking of putting Perfect Blue in there. I honestly can't remember what I think of Black Swan. That was before Letterboxd. I mean, I have Vanilla Sky in my four faves already. That's a pretty big psychological thriller. But the one I kept coming back to that I have just absolutely loved every time I watch it is The Game.
Oh. Michael Douglas. That's another great pick. That's also in the, they don't make them like this anymore, cinematic universe, I feel like. I can't wait for us to cover that movie. I'm removing my stars now. Eric in chat, the game ep, when? Put it on the list. Put it on the list. Somebody, Dale. Someone start off a list of all these movies we need to cover. I mean, would that fit into sexual Michael Douglas month?
I don't know if he has sex in that movie. Does he have to have sex for it to be sexual? Come on. It has to be sexy. I mean, danger can be sexy. Thank you. He's in a lot of danger. Sex with danger. Let's see. Is there anything else I wanted to talk about with this movie before we dig in? I will say that I mentioned it maybe last week or the week before, but I bought the 4K sight unseen.
For this week. I have a cure. On eBay. Did it have English dubs? Did it have English dubs? It's from Eureka. It did. Oh, my. That was a joke. No, not dubs. Subs. English subs. Oh, that's good. And I fire this up in my Xbox. It's my only 4K player. Yeah, I know I need to get a other 4K player, but that's just what we're working with right now. And I won't complain about the Xbox controller.
buttons this time because i bought a remote oh like an actual remote for your xbox that you can hit play on you can hit fast forward and stuff that's great um so that's a big moment for me But the 4K looks insane. Really? The 4K is gorge. I think this is also just like a gorgeous movie in general. Is this your first note? No. I mean, it could be. Keep going.
The dusk scenes, a lot of the scenes on the rooftops, everything was just absolute dynamite to see. The stuff with him and his doctor buddy on the roof... Yeah. It reminded me a lot of heat in some of those scenes, like when Al Pacino or De Niro were outside. It just, you know, it just looks so real and like of the time. It's kind of like hard to explain, but it just. it didn't, it felt like a big movie. It felt like major. Didn't feel kind of like a, a kind of like
J-horror, Japanese horror movie. I don't know. It just felt expensive. It felt like really smartly planned out. I don't know. And I don't mean that as a dig to other J-horror because I love Japanese horror movies, but I don't know. It just felt rich.
How did you watch it? I guess the HD version. How do you think the movie looked overall? Yeah, I thought it looked great as well. Yeah, you just said rich. That was the word I was thinking of. Because it's not like... I want to say it's like on a terms of color or anything that it like popped off the screen, but there's like a richness and like lived in, you know, like that film grain.
look that it has. And just so natural. Maybe there's just so much natural light that is used. It's just used so well that it gives that sense of looking into a window. Yeah, I thought it was gorgeous also. Even though, not the 4K. Yeah, we watched it on Criterion, the Criterion stream. And I have no complaints. I mean, I don't know what...
I can't imagine what the 4K looks like, but I think it looked great. Yeah. There's also like a lot of, like you said, natural light scenes where it felt like the clouds were obscuring the light in some of these long takes. And it just... Like, I don't know how often I've seen that, like a long extended take outdoors where maybe some cloud cover comes over and kind of just changes the entire lighting scene of the moment. I thought it was really cool to see that.
Pearl, what's at the top of your list for this viewing? The top of my list? And had you ever heard of this movie before? I forgot to ask our history. Oh, yeah. To me, this is a Letterboxd movie. And what I mean by that is I hadn't heard of this until I saw it on Letterboxd. I think I saw it four or five years ago when we were doing an October of horror.
And I saw this movie on a list and I was like, huh, what is this? And then I looked at the director and he has this other movie, Pulse, as well. And I put both of them on my watch list and I almost... I almost picked Pulse one year for an October pick, but I didn't for whatever reason. And I've had these two on my watch list for a long time.
Yeah, and it was just like, it's a movie that I see logged on Letterboxd. People talk about it, but outside of that, I had never heard of it. Yeah, I think I added Pulse to my watch list today, and I think that leans more supernatural. as opposed to like, you know, more grounded. I mean, as grounded as hypnotism is. Danny, had you heard of this at all? Honestly, I just heard about this this past October. One of...
One of the people I follow on Letterboxd logged it and was just like raving about it. So I had no idea it existed. I think he also... May have hinted at the whole connection to like seven, which I feel like a bunch of people have connected this to seven quite a bit. So that's the only reason I kind of remember the pick or remember it when you picked it.
But it's been real recent since I've heard of this film. I'd love to rewatch 7. I feel like I haven't seen. I do too. When was the last time? Do I even have 7 logged? I have it logged 2022, but I didn't write a review. I wonder how that holds up. Do you have stars? Do you have to remove them? They were sort of a Letterboxd show. Rip. So, Pearl, what's your first point?
My first point, well, I just want to make a statement here. I plan on making no definitive claims about this film. I don't have any objective facts to state about its merits. All I wish to do is share my experience watching it. And my first point is like the, I think how this movie is a mystery and like the central part of the movie.
is like determining what is going on with these murders right um so you're like and when you're following a detective in a movie i think like i have like this expectation of where it's going to get to and like what I'm going to get out of it. And I guess the question I would want to ask you guys is like, how do you feel by like the end of this movie of what it gives you?
in terms of like an answer to like what was going on. Right. Because like, ultimately we know that it's like, it's hypnotism, right? There's some kind of control over these people with this. That's. that Mamiya has, and then possibly Takabe by the end of it. But it doesn't explain the... Like it doesn't go like deeper than that necessarily of like, what are like the mechanics of this of like, how can somebody do this? Like, and like, why is it like murder that they do and all in the same way?
And I think I was expecting something like that, like something, an explanation, like a deeper explanation to the murders and what was happening that I was like thrown off that by the end, you don't really get that answered. And it's more like nebulous around what is happening. So I'm wondering, how did you guys feel like by the end of this in terms of what you get?
for an answer i felt like i was expecting something nebulous maybe like within the last 30 minutes like i felt like i wasn't going to get like an open shut case you know, roll credits. I felt like something weird is going to happen at the end of this and it's not going to be your tried and true wrapped up thing. So I was kind of like preparing myself for what happens at the end.
It also felt like a movie that when we did the wailing, it made me like think and sit like, what did I just see? Do I understand what happened? And how quickly do I need to open Reddit to hear other people's theories? Which I find very fun. Like, as we talked about on the whaling episode, like...
That was one of my favorite movies that we had watched, and I loved the interpretations. There's not as many open interpretations, I think, for this one, but I was okay with the kind of nebulous ending for this. Danny, what about you? I think one of my notes literally is, why were they killing? I don't understand, unless I missed it in the dialogue, but for them to just...
be hypnotized and then to kill. I don't understand what their motive was to kill outside of anything. So for the way it ended, kind of passing the hypnotist torch on to Kabe, I was just like, okay, that's fine. But I would have loved a more fleshed out answer. Koji was actually in Tampopo also. Yeah. Oh, right. White suit man. But I will say like about the ending.
I did kind of feel that the detective was going to be changed by the end of the movie. I felt like there's no way that this ends well. The one thing, like, we'll probably get into the Reddit stuff a lot more, but the one thing I didn't realize until after was some people were theorizing that... Mamiya had gotten to his wife before the movie started. Because if you notice, because she's acting just like him to start the movie. And she does that tapping.
Right. And then there's the noise. The table shakes. Yeah, the table shakes. And then the noise when you first see him on the beach is playing, like that pulsating noise. It's also the noise in his kitchen. Oh, her dryer. Yeah, that's also playing. So that was just like another kind of like, oh, that's interesting. Those are the aspects that I love for these kinds of movies when you go and just poke around on Reddit to see what other people noticed on multiple viewings. I don't...
I don't know if any of that is true, but I do think it adds another element of what actually was being prepared because he calls him amazing several times. It's almost like he knew from the onset. that you're going to get this, and then you're going to keep up. You're the perfect foil for what I have. Then you need to keep this going, which I thought was fascinating. But I guess, I mean, my...
Other note was about the amnesia stuff. I wrote in my notes, one of my first notes was I thought the plot of the movie was like he played the devil and he had amnesia. Like, what if the plot of the movie was like, what if the devil had amnesia? It was just like walking around Japan effing with people.
That's kind of a sick idea, I feel like. Almost like he was like, when he first appears, I'm like, this guy looks like a zombie. And I thought like, oh, maybe when he's around people, he doesn't realize it. And he's like making them do that. That was like my very first thought about that. I kind of thought that too of like, what if he's like a demon walking around? Which I guess could be an interpretation. That could just be it. And maybe that's the way it is if you want to view it that way.
Yeah, I think so, because you're right. Like, in terms of, like, how it's actually happening, like, they're saying it's hypnosis. But, like, what if it is, like, a spirit's, like, in him, and then when Takabe kills him, like, the... you know, the spirit goes into him and like, he is now possessed. I think you could almost interpret this in some kind of way. And it would, and it feels.
almost satisfying just because it's like the, the whole hypnotism thing. It's like, well, like, like why, like why is all this happening in this way? Yeah. Jetty's asking, was the hypnotism part or the app.
amnesia part faked like yeah later in the movie it's just like obvious that he's just kind of doing that to lull them into hypnosis like all his questions my the first scene with him was like oh my god how many times is he gonna act like this Little did I know that happens like five more times in the movie.
How fast would you slap somebody? I would have kicked him out. The second question, listen, dude, you're weird. You got to go. I can't with this right now. If you say who one more time. You are out. Also, there was one other note in chat I wanted to mention. Mike says, I think the point is he's revealing deep down people are evil and will revert to baser human violence with suggestion. Yeah, I mean, by the end of the movie, that could very well be true.
Well, the doctor who cuts the face off of the guy, doesn't she kill a guy that wasn't nice to her? So she took out her on an orderly that... was like mean to her at the hospital right oh is that right he was yeah he was saying how like deep down you just want to cut a man because of the way you were treated right and she i wasn't sure the way you were treated was just like a like a general
As a woman in this field, men treated you badly. Well, there's that too, yeah. Oh, that's interesting because then I think about it. Did all the murderers, did they have a relationship to?
all the victims? Because she knew the orderly, the guy knew his wife. The first one was a prostitute, unless it's like a repeat sex worker that he's been with. Because, yeah, that's kind of interesting of like... do they do they had had they had some like malice at some point like secretly for this person and this hypnotism allows them to like act upon that yeah even know how small it might have been
Well, because I would assume that the detective kills his wife because he felt like she was holding him back. Right. Like he wasn't living a full life because of what he had to deal with with her. And... Who killed the doctor? They left it open-ended, but did the detective kill the doctor? They said he would like handcuff himself and killed himself, but I didn't quite grasp that.
That was interesting. I thought that maybe he realized that he had been hypnotized because he knew he was going to kill somebody, so he kills himself to stop him. Interesting. That was my only thought about that. Because the axe on the wall? Yeah. yeah like he knew he was too far gone he was in too deep okay but yeah like you could say that you're right like everyone who did kill in this movie probably had those thoughts already and he is just kind of
opening that up to their primal decisions. Danny? My first note is a little bit of a complaint about this film. So since October, and even when Proto talks about having it in like a Halloween thing, I came into this expecting horror, like a horror movie. And I didn't get that vibe at all from this film. I wouldn't even consider this a horror movie. And I think it really affected...
how I watched it because I expected maybe something in the lines, more in the lines of The Wailing. But when I think of Japanese horror, it's just, it feels like this isn't that. I was really annoyed, actually. Do you consider Seven a horror movie? No. I don't, really. It's just more thriller, police procedural.
which is what this really was. So I was really kind of let down with thinking that this was some sort of horror movie along those kind of Japanese horror lines. And it really, in my opinion, it's not. And it really kind of bugged me because I was really waiting for some shoe to drop that was something way more demonic or evil than just like...
And I really wasn't getting like possession vibes or devil vibes. So it really bugged me that, I don't know, it really, it just, I just really like messed me up watching it. Clarence and Jeff says, psychological horror. Sure. I did search, I think I searched psychological thriller. Hereditary came up a lot. It's funny because in my mind,
that's more horror than psychological thriller, but that's like a different level of horror. That's like, makes my skin crawl and I want to die. I wouldn't even put these two next to each other, Cure and Hereditary. So it really skewed my view of this film coming into it, and it didn't meet expectations that I had set for some sort of Japanese horror film. And I think if I had known...
If I had just assumed that this was just a regular police procedural thriller, I would have looked at this film way different. I feel similar to you. I had read some pretty over-the-top stuff about this movie, I think, in the past couple years. Like, one of the most disturbing pictures you'll ever see. Right, right. You know, just like, really...
Going above and beyond in terms of like how, yeah, like horrifying and scary and tense this is. And I, I gotta be honest, I didn't really feel that either. No. Now, and I'm, but I am wondering, like, I know how. How much of like the audio is important in this movie. And honestly, like I started this movie when my kids were still awake. I was upstairs like they weren't in the room, of course. They're downstairs. So it's it's it's not that.
I didn't have it that loud. And then also it's like when it's in subtitles, it's just kind of like, well, I'm going to be reading it. Like, I don't need to hear it as much. So I feel like I didn't have like the right, like I wasn't aware of how important. the audio would be in this movie because anything you read or you you watch about this movie they're like the audio so it's always I feel like I did a disservice to this movie without even realizing it in some ways
In many ways, baby. In a lot of ways. In a lot of ways, he did. I specifically tried to plan my week. I was like, oh, I could watch it Thursday morning. with you know the daylight but then i was like no i can't watch this during the day i have to watch this at night like late one night um at least when the sun was down so i do consider this horror i but i think like horror as a genre just has multiple levels
of what that means to the person. I felt like a sense of dread often during this movie. So in that respect, I do consider this hard. I mean, there's scary things that happen in this movie, like some of the murder scenes. Yeah, so, but I do view this as horror, me personally. Well, I will say, I will call it horror, but it wasn't to the extent that I thought. I mean, I think Danny's crazy for not calling 7 horror.
Well, I mean, I think this was scary. I think this was scary. I mean, the interrogation scene, the scene where the cops are going to visit the hypnotist in his cell, the scene where... Takabe gets hypnotized I think that's really scary like you think he has the upper hand in that scene and he like flicks the lighter and he doesn't even realize that like the water above him is starting and then he sees that and like I was like
I was like, oh my God, he just got hypnotized. Fuck. Like that was like my entire reaction to that scene. Cause like in that moment, I'm hoping he doesn't get, like maybe he can pull the upper hand on this guy, but no, he cannot. I don't know. Yeah, I mean, I thought the scene at the end with him going to the building and the picture behind the shower curtain. Holy crap, that was scary. That freaked me out. I mean, also him listening to the phonograph.
at the end of the movie. I thought that was scary because I felt like he was being even more pulled in deep. I was like, no, shut this off. And he's just being like super hypnotized by that. He's another level of hypnotism. Yeah. Which also, I don't know, that thing sitting in there, how many other people have been effed up by listening to that? Yeah.
I guess it's my turn. I mean, I love the hypnotism stuff. Mesmering. Mesmere. Like, I didn't know there was an actual person named Mesmere. I thought that was rad as hell. I love the kind of, like... research into hypnotism and that like back then it was considered like almost too occulty like this is this would get you killed that's why that when they looked at the tape the guy's like not on camera
But I loved them slowly unfolding that this guy was doing a ton of research into this to like control people. Like, I view that also as just generally scary. Like, you get some evil person who wants to hypnotize people and can do it quite easily. Like, that's pretty frightening. Like, I don't know anything about hypnotism.
You always hear stories about like, you know, my family went to this hypnotist show and she was, she was acting like she was Madonna on stage. The hypnotist told her to act like Madonna. I'm like, what? Huh? I don't know any, I don't know. I don't know. But like. This stuff was cool. So, like, at the onset, when he first appears, I'm like, this guy's fucking annoying. Can we fast forward through this scene? Like, he's just not listening. Oh, yes. Yeah, the main Mamiya.
And eventually he's like, oh, he's hypnotizing people. That was like frightening to me that like he's slowly pulling people into his web, like lulling them down. And then he's hypnotizing them to murder people. So I love that stuff. Like, I love the backstory. I love the research. Pearl, what did you think? I mean, when he said, or when the words appeared, animal magnetism. Yeah. I was, you know, I'm like, let's go. I don't know what that means, but I'm on board. Let's go.
And I like what you were saying about the guy who was in the film who was first doing it from the 20s or whatever. And I hadn't really considered it. I kind of thought of him like, oh, he's a doctor doing research. But like the thought of what if he was like an evil doctor and like he it's like, no, he was purposefully developing this so that he could have control people to kill other people.
And that's a pretty terrifying thought. I kind of thought of it as like, oh, he's a doctor who's trying to do research and he stumbles upon this ability. regrets it or something. But the thought that, like, no, he was like, yeah, I'm going to control people in this way is wild. I think some of it, again, it's like, I wonder, like, how does it work? Because at the end...
When Mamiya, like, he takes the stool and he's banging the radiator. That was rad. And I guess he's using that to then, like, get the guard to... Is that how he gets... Yeah, he was using the... He was using noise to, like... to hypnotize people. Right. And like, that's how he escapes. But like, How? Like, what is actually happening that he can do that? If it was that easy to understand, we'd all be doing it, Proto. We can't know. It's not safe for us to know.
Wookiee Shannon chat, check out Darren Brown. Dude can hypnotize people in seconds. That's what I don't understand. Is this real? Or is this just David Copperfield smoking mirrors? You know, or are people just, quote, so susceptible to being hypnotized and suggestion that they'll just do whatever? I don't know. I haven't done any research in this, but I want to. Oh, no. I don't want you to.
I mean, I don't want to learn it, but I want to like, is there a good documentary on hypnotism? And is it a sham? Okay. Mythbusters. What did you think of the hypnotism angle Danny in this? I loved it. I think it's really cool. I loved it because it felt original. I don't think I've known another film that is like
uh, the baddie is using hypnotism to make people kill other people. It's either like, I don't know if you do, if you have to deal with like superhero shit and that's just like, Oh, he's using mind control. It's just like, it's always mind control, but this was like, It felt, it felt like, like Perdo says, like, how's it work? But also it felt like, oh, this could happen. Like this, if this, this could work, this isn't just some mutant power.
if is what's the science behind this what um um i don't know what what is this be is this being used for something now and we don't know it am i hypnotized now It's a really cool aspect of the film, and I think it's also filmed really well. I think Curacao does a really good job of not just kind of...
giving us a baddie who's using hypnotism. The performances when they're getting hypnotized is great, but also the editing of the film looks really cool when... uh takabe's getting hypnotized himself or he's like flashing in and out of like scenes and stuff that he's seen um because a part of it i mean i know i made a joke about cynic douche being surreal this has that kind of
surreal. I got that like feeling watching this of like, I'm lulling into something watching this film. So I think it's a really cool aspect of a baddie. Yeah, the scene where the doctor gets hypnotized was nuts. When he's talking about the water and then just the water slowly inches towards her. That was bonkers. Next on your list. Let's talk about Takabe and his relationship with his wife. So I watched some, there's two videos that I watched after this. One was from Mubi.
i watched on youtube called creating the scariest non-film horror it's by us spikeima movies and then there was one on criterion as well called there is no cure and it was like a 15 minute video essay um and i think they were both really enlightening about this movie and like what was just going on and again like the sound stuff i feel like i didn't i didn't pick up on it because i didn't hear it um as closely but the way
In these videos, they talk about the sound around Takabe, specifically the washer machine and how that's used, not just in the scenes when he's at his apartment, which it's always running. But then like even other scenes, like when they interrogate the police officer who killed his partner, like the washing machine is playing there and it's playing at other scenes with him. And just like how this.
that character um and his relation to relationship to his wife how that's displayed and like devolves and changes The way it's described of him like coming into the house and he turning it off and then she goes back and turning it on and how that relates to her psychosis. There's just like so many things there that I feel like. One, there was a lot that I didn't pick up on. But the stuff that I did about this character and his journey in this movie is pretty incredible, I thought.
There's one thing that I read and maybe it was in one of your videos, but like how he had never finished a meal in any of his scenes until the last scene. He's finally like content and happy and he's like, he finishes a meal. Which I thought was fascinating. After his wife was murdered. Yeah. Right. The one, the one thing that I wish, like another reason why I lean on watching like movies on Apple TV or like rentals, like.
Watching a movie with AirPods in is fantastic. That is some of the best audio experience you can have. So when I watched it on my Xbox, I guess I could have put my Xbox headphones on. Yeah, you could have. cutting this all out. No, you leave it in. Leave this shit in. Yeah, I gotta try this. You gotta do it. I gotta try the earphones. Yeah. I mean, there's even a setting where you can set it so that the audio from the TV...
is like spatial audio. So if you turn your head, the audio just shifts to whatever ear is facing the TV. So it's like an actual movie theater. Something to think about. Interesting. How about the scenes with him? The hallucination scene. When he comes back to the house and he sees his wife, I feel like that's the closest thing to a jump scare. That was awful. That was pretty intense. And the way that it cut in.
moments as like almost like memories like flashing memories that he was having i think in terms of like the element of hypnotism and how that was used in this was really great i think What made that scene also really powerful is when it cuts to her actually standing in the kitchen. It feels almost as jarring as seeing her hanging from the ceiling. There's something about that.
When he sees her body, it's like dead silent. And it's just his voice or his reaction. But when it cuts back to her, there's like this hum. that's like a visceral sound when she's just like standing in the kitchen. Like, what are you doing on your knees? Yeah. That seems brutal. Maybe he was even more frightened that she was still alive. Maybe like the actual like suicide is like, maybe he's like.
Here we go, finally. You think he was celebrating. It was like a touchdown. Maybe him seeing her in real life, he's like, ah, you're alive. Yeah. I mean, yeah, maybe he had that thought so much of coming home and her being dead. It's like a fantasy of his. Oh, my God.
I don't know what people go through in that situation. He's taking care of his wife with what she's got going on. I'm sure people are like, my life would be a lot better if this wasn't happening. I'm sure that's a regular thought. Right.
And maybe that's how it like it happens for all these characters. Like when they get hypnotized, they start having like these flashes of what could be, you know, if they do this thing. My life would be a lot better if this idiot cop wasn't in this box with me nine hours a day. That's a great point. Telling me not to smoke a cigarette. If this prostitute didn't give me chlamydia, I'd be having a better day. Oh. Probably with that. I'm just inferring what happened with that. I don't know. Yeah.
Danny? Koji Yakusho is brilliant in this film. I think he's an incredible actor. I saw him in Better Days, and we saw him in Tempopo. But he's so captivating in this. He's so... I don't know what the word is, actually. There's something where... His performance is so not pure, but it's very believable. Him as a cop, him as someone who's caring for his wife who has amnesia or dementia or whatever it is.
He's just brilliant in this film. I've really enjoyed his performance. His drip as an officer. Oh my God, that trench coat. Can I get this? Can I pull this off? A shot of him walking down the alley. Yeah, amazing. He's pretty great. I mean, outside of those three films, I saw that he's actually in Pulse, the other one we talked about. I saw Babel, but...
It's been since 2006, since I've seen Babel. So I need to just watch more of his films, I think. I haven't seen Memoirs of a Geisha. I haven't seen 13 Assassins. So it's like... Am I adding another journey to my year? Koji? Koji journey. Kojourney. Hashimoto? Get this. 2011. He's the star in Harakiri, Death of a Samurai. Directed by Takeshi Mike.
Hold on, I got to scroll to the bottom of his list because it's not popular. I don't see this. It's in the fourth row. I see it in fourth row. I'm seeing Amy Stone 5. You can't trust that. Thank you, Andy. Is this real life? It's Charlie Beebe logged in. No one star this movie. Nobody star it.
Anyway, I think Koji's a brilliant actor, and I really loved him in this. Yeah, he's fantastic. I didn't realize that was him in Perfect Days. Ever since you watched that movie, I've been trying to make time to watch that movie. Man, I need you to, on a bright sunny day, open a window and watch Perfect Days. Headphones at night. Can I watch it at night? You can watch it at night. There's just a beautiful day vibe with this movie.
Vim Vendors, my goat. I mean, yeah. He directed a great film. Is it my turn? We went through most of my notes. Go through my Menchies. How about that TV in the police station? Did you catch that? That CRT television? No, I missed it. Oh, my God. I kept trying to catch what his watch was, but I couldn't get a good shot of it. I need to make moves. Did I link to that like greens?
CRT that I found on Facebook marketplace. Honestly, I'm sick of your links. Just buy a fucking TV. Let me just see if I can find it again. I need to, is it still for sale? Oh yeah. Green screen monochrome CRT computer monitor. What? Imagine me watching VHS tapes on a green screen monochrome TV. Stop yapping about it. Seriously. Do something. Just do something. How about reading a newspaper at the kitchen table?
We need to go back. I looked. Oh, after I watched the post, I'm like, can I get the newspaper at my house? It's expensive. How much is it? I felt like it was like $4 a paper or something. $4 a day? Get out of here. The subscription didn't make sense. Jimmy Stewart was buying those for like a penny and a half. not even in 1956. It was a Buffalo nickel. Grace Salon says, I read the newspaper at the kitchen table. Grace, there's no lying in chat tonight. Please stop this.
Not during Cure Night. Please. What if the devil had amnesia? Somebody make that movie. That's a million dollar idea. The hospital room scene where they first interrogate the, the dude in that like giant hospital bedroom. Oh yeah. That scene was gorgeous. The rooftops shots are nuts. That guy getting defaced. You can't say defaced. I just said it. God, it happened. Mesmerism. That's just a great word. Yeah, I agree.
The cop meets him and sees his light. Oof. Yeah, man, those people got screwed up. Okay, I was wrong. So a seven-day print paper, home delivery, is $7 a week. So it's a dollar paper. That's a lot of paper. Can you recycle paper? We've got to figure this out. That's over $350 a year. Right. My God. Is that worth it? For the paper.
I mean, I can get two papers a week for $2. So not saving anything. The thing is, how much would that cut out of you scrolling? Nothing. It would cut out nothing. Then more at a deficit. I would probably never read it. We're at a TikTok deficit. I would just put it under my arm and walk into the house.
and then throw it in the table. I mean, that's pretty good though. You walk in and get your table, you put the paper down and then that's the only use you get out of the paper. And you would probably feel really great. Like that first sip of coffee with the paper open, is that worth a dollar a day? It might be. All right. The vibes alone are worth a dollar and a half. And my cigarettes. The monkey in his house or his apartment. Oh, yeah.
Oh, my God, that bathtub. What does that mean? Yeah, that's what I want to know. The live monkey in the cage, too? What does that mean? He had the lighter on the table. And then the water started dripping and it was like gray. I was like, did he put the monkey juice inside the lighter? I was like, what is the purpose of this monkey? Like, what is the connection? It looks like, I would assume he hypnotized someone to kill the monkey.
Practice. I thought he was milking the monkey and that is the animal magnetism for the hypnosis. I want to read a book on this stuff. It's just so fascinating. Should we practice hypnotizing each other at the lake? I think we should. In three weeks, we need to hypnotize each other. We can do it in three weeks. How much can we master in three weeks when it comes to hypnotism?
One of the dumbest ideas ever. Also the shots of him in front of that abandoned building towards the end. Cool building. Super cool. Trenchcoats are rad. That was my one note. I could see this being remade in the late 90s by some American director and Al Pacino plays the lead detective in a trench coat. In my head, I'm just imagining Heat-era actors in this movie. This is definitely a Gus Van Sant remake. Nuts. The phonograph is freaky. Just what he listens to, instantly you know it's game over.
You're done. I had a fantastic time with this movie. I'm at four and a half stars. Okay. For Cure. I'm glad to finally watch this. I'm excited to watch Pulse. Got a lot of homework to do. I've been meaning to go on a Japanese horror journey. As a teenager, you saw The Ring. I never went back to watch the originals, though. I never want to go see the actual movies that those were based on, the remakes, the originals, but it could be time. Bro.
I was getting serious spirited away vibes. Really? In the scene where him and his wife are riding the bus to the asylum with the clouds moving in the background. That was a really cool shot. And then even like that abandoned building he goes to, it kind of has like this, you know, it's like out in this middle of like this field in the middle of nowhere. Very surreal kind of location.
One of those videos I watched, they were theorizing what if this is all in his head, these scenes. I saw a Reddit comment that called it they met in the dreamscape. And I was like, what? They theorized that the building wasn't even there. Yeah. And then I was wondering about like, that's where you see his wife in the wheelchair with like the X through her throat.
Oh, my God. And to me, that just seemed like a dream, vision, nightmare that he's seeing. That isn't something that actually happened. Oh, really? You think she's alive? Well, I don't know. It seemed like that was in the abandoned building. And I was like, well, why would she be there?
It just, it felt very strange. Like it felt like a dream scene because our corpse was like, it was like decomposing already. Like, which is very strange. So I wasn't really sure what to make of that other than it was pretty, pretty creepy. I kept getting, I mean, I was super annoyed with Mamiya. Like, his dialogue, kill me. I wanted to beat the F out of him. He was so annoying. Oh, my God.
And I think that was one of the things I was struggling with this movie is that like, I got like, it was like 40 minutes into it. And I'm like, man, the second half of this movie is going to be a banger based on like what everyone's saying about this movie. And it's like 30 minutes left. And I'm like, yo, this last 30 minutes is going to be crazy. We get to 10 minutes. And I'm like, I don't think it's going to happen the way I think it's going to happen.
So I was definitely feeling like what I was expecting from this movie, it didn't really get there. But I think the more I think about it and the more I've read about it and things I've watched about it, it's... I mean, it's really a fascinating picture. I mean, not even to mention just like the technical aspects of it and how gorgeous it is. But it's just, yeah, it is a fascinating story. And it made me think of The Wailing as well.
Of just like how much of like a fun discussion that movie was and what a fun ride it was. And I think I felt that more. during the movie whereas this movie i feel like i'm getting it on the back end like after like thinking about it and hearing what other people think about it um is like that much I like more rewarding. I mean, he's, in some ways, this might be like, he's like the Japanese Christopher Nolan. No. It's like after the fact. Hello. You know, remember Inception, the conversations.
Anyway, yeah, I want to watch more of his movies as well. And I think I could see myself returning to this. And I would want to watch it in a theater. This would be your next meetup. Oh. Like a Dolby picture? Oh, my God. So, yeah, I think I'm at four stars for this. Okay. Wow. Okay. Yeah. I don't know if I have much to say left about this. I don't have any more notes. I did really appreciate the sound in this film. I am at three stars. Okay.
I would like to rewatch this film, knowing what it is now. And I think I'll probably come around on it a little more. But for now, I'm going to stick with three. I had a good time. And there's a lot to love about this film, but I blame Letterboxd. It's so funny, too. I think there's a perception previewing. I didn't read anything.
I read the synopsis and that was it. I don't even know if I, I looked at star ratings. Remember, I think I said like five, five, or was that for sure? I don't know, but I wasn't really reading anything. So. 99% of this movie was just like, I don't know what's going to happen. I don't have any kind of preconceived notions. I just expected to be scared.
and scared and horror and i expected i expected the wrong things and i was in the wrong headspace for this film that's just the truth thank you for your apology i'm i am apologizing accepted thank you We do have a voicemail to listen to before we wrap up tonight and one letter. So let's listen to that right meow. Hey. It's Kelly. I'm Yuri949 on the Discord. I'm one of the 20,000 people who joined up last week. I was going to send an email, but I...
Recently listened to your 1917 episode. And in that, Slim said that he preferred a voicemail because then he didn't have to do the work of reading the email. Have jumped out of my comfort zone. Thank you. I've been listening to 70mm for a long time, since the Coherence episode. Oh, my gosh. And I made a list of movies that you've covered and I haven't seen and I've been slowly working through them. But for me to watch a film is very...
deliver it because I don't have a television. I actually don't have internet at my house. So if I want to watch a movie, I put the DVD on hold at my local library, support your local library. And then I bought an external disk drive so that I can watch it on my laptop. And then after that, I listened to the episode the next day in the office at work. And I'm often stifling uncontrollable giggles because.
You guys are so funny. Some of my favorite things are whenever Slim reminds us that this is a safe space to let it out. And whenever Proto has a great time with a movie and then gives it two stars. And whenever Danny, as a side comment, says, excuse me. Stay tuned. Or the more rare. God bless. It's the best. I can't get enough. You guys are my ultimate comfort listen. Also, you guys are in my generation. I think that Danny and I are the same age. So your nostalgia hits me just right.
I also love that you guys aren't experts. Thank you. There are too many experts out there. Everyman. So thank you for helping mitigate that problem. Ultimately, I think that 70mm is more than just a podcast with the village, the journeys, the community, the artwork, the meetups. It's like... A cultural experience. And I'm so happy to finally be a part of it. I wish I had joined up earlier. So thanks. And I'll see you in the village. Bye.
Oh my God. Voicemail of the year. My gosh. Kelly. One week into January. Voicemail of the year. Shut it down. No more VMs for the rest of the year. Can't be topped. Thank you, Kelly. Lots to digest from that VM. All of it good. I think the getting out of our comfort zone is like, I mean, that's one of the reasons why we chose this month. Because I felt like, we felt like we were in our comfort zone for, I think, quite a while with some of our movies. So let's try something different.
What a VM, support local. I bet when we both said support local at the same exact time. What a process, too. Supporting local, getting the DVD, no internet, no TV. God bless. What a time. Do you think Kelly reads the paper? Oh, she definitely has a subscription to the paper. And she probably starts with the funny pages. The Herald. Kelly, confirm to us whenever you're listening to this if you get the paper, please.
Let's see. One final note. Subject line, gasoline cologne. Honestly, the discourse around gasoline vapes may be top five discourse in the history of this show. We touched on something last week that was very special. This comes from a dear friend of ours, catcher. There's a great local pizza shop near my place that makes their own garlic-infused olive oil that you can brush on the pizza yourself after you receive your order. It's delicious.
That much freedom always leads to me putting way too much on, which means I'm always left with the intense garlic aroma trapped in my beard for hours if it's not washed out. I think it's awesome and once had the thought that it should be bottled as a cologne. I know the people around me would hate it, but that smell is exactly what I imagine heaven smells like.
I was reminded of this idea after hearing your discussion last week about gasoline cologne and was instantly curious to know if there are other weird ass smells you guys wish you could get in aerosol form. Love you guys. Garlic infused catcher in Canada. My wife makes fun of me all the time, but anytime we go somewhere to eat or she gives me something to try, I have to smell it first. I can't ingest something without smelling it.
I don't know if it's a primer of mine, but man, what else? Danny, do you have any smells that you would want in aerosol form? I don't know. That's fascinating. Danny in chat says paint thinner. Nope. Nope, Danny. If our Danny's not into gasoline, I don't think he's going to be into paint thinner. No. I don't know what it could be. I would say the way, this is kind of weird, but like the way my grandmom's house smelled, sometimes I smell it and I don't.
know what makes it happen i mean it's definitely a combination of like 50 years of smoking cigarettes but then like something else like the furniture in their house maybe that's what it is is like the smell of like furniture-emitting cigarette vapor for 30 years. But like whenever I smell that, like if I could, because the power, I mean, the power of smell and memory is something that's going to hold.
Sometimes I'll smell something and I'll remember a time and I don't even know what the smell is, but it's like, that was a box that I sniffed when I was six years old. Like I have a memory of this. It's so weird. And I've only smelled it like twice before in my life. So those are the things that come to mind for me. I think the only other one that comes to mind is old brown pages of a book. That old book smell.
You got to smell old comic when you're reading it. Oh, my God. An old comic? Put it up to your nose. I smell. I mean, if I find my old action figures, you got to take a whiff. That's 30 years of memories. It's of an action figure. Yeah. Like that plastic. What? Yeah.
Oh, yeah. Do I have an old figure around? A man always gets annoyed at me because I'll, like, smell something in the house. And I'm like, you smell that? You don't smell that? Like, did somebody have an accident in the house? I mean, there was one time I was like, do you smell gas? You don't smell that. It was like upstairs. I got it downstairs and our oven was on. Oh my God. Wow. That's pretty good. Leaking fumes into the house. We had to like slowly open those. It all makes sense.
I think you're not supposed to like quickly open the windows in the house because it might explode or something. Yeah. Wow. Um, I have a book from the library that I got. Oh yeah. There's the library smell. Not too strong. This is a copy of William S. Burroughs' novel, Queer, I got at the library. 50 cents. Actually bought three books.
$1.50. I didn't have any, I didn't have, all I had was a $50 bill and the guy said, just, just take the books. So I got them free. You showed the library with a 50. There's no way they're breaking that. No, no. Absolutely not. You got to write a check. They've actually done that before. I got to go. I'm going to listen. I'm going to drop a 10 spot into the donation box. Okay. Okay. I will support local. Yeah. Okay.
I got to take my headphone off. What'd you do? I was hearing a clicking. I think it's the heater coming on. I heard something. You don't hear that? You don't smell that? With a chair. Hypnotizing you right now.
