70mm celebrates... BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Hey, it's your old pal Slim, and welcome to a special bonus episode of 70 MM a podcast for movie fans just like you. With me as always is my close friend and artist Danny Haas. Hello. And our close friend and movie insider, ProtoLexis. Hello. Uh wait. Sorry, sorry, sorry. Hi. We're here to talk about February. We do these episodes uh to announce the movies ahead of time so folks can prep, maybe plan their movie watching for the month.

If they want to join along, um, you know, put your name on the list at your local library to get the DVD. Uh this time we're doing the same thing as last month where we don't know each other's picks. We know one movie that we're gonna close the month out with. but we don't know each other's picks. Uh for the month of February we're selecting films made by black creators, directors, writers, um you know, key voices in the production of the movie across genres.

Eras, decades. But before we talk about that theme, Proto, how did you think the international 70 MM Goes month went as we lead into Black History Month? How did it go? Well, you know, I think it was good'cause it was diverse. We got some French love in there. Turned hate, I think. French French. We might have turned people on off the on the French. We got something out of the French.

Got some Italian American in there. Mm-hmm. That was good. What was the other movie we did? As of recording this, we haven't done Bicycle Thieves yet, but that's next. So we'll go back to Italy. We did cure. QR Q in Japan. Yeah. Fantastic film. Fantastic app. Yeah, it was a good month. Good movies. I think so. Great month. So when? So how do you feel moving into February? Are you still as excited?

For this month? I'm excited because uh my pick is gonna be a big check. Big check off the list of movies. Oh, really? Yeah, should have watched, you know. You know? Should have watched. Okay. Yeah. Oh, interesting. I don't even know what that's. So you haven't seen the film that you've picked? Yeah, we'll get into it. Yeah. Oh my God. Um, I w just briefly before we recorded, um, you know, we try to expand our minds on this show, widen the lens, as it were.

um to choose movies from different uh parts of the world, different filmmakers. I mean, I I'm scrolling back to to see the last time we covered a movie from a black director. Let's hold our hold ourselves accountable on this show. Okay. Okay. Um Oh my. Last summer? Uh Creed. Accountability. For Mount Goatmore Month. Okay. That was a long time ago. Okay. I mean, uh unless I'm missing like a bonus episode or a vault episode, but it's been quite a while.

Yeah. Um, so it's it's time to right the wrongs, Danny, as it were. I mean, I agree. And it's a great month to do it. We are we're already celebrating black history in in the US. Um, so let's pick out some films with some black excellence. Okay. Lead us off. You know? Me. I'm first this week. You're first. Okay, so I'm I'm also checking off a big check mark, not for myself, uh before our show. And while I think of uh

uh just you know, black actors, black directors, black uh musicians and writers, this one kind of checks all the boxes for me. And the big mark check mark is It's our first MCU movie. Come on. What? So we're gonna do Black Panther. What? To kick off our month. Ryan Kugler, Chadwick Bozeman, Michael B. Jordan. Daniel Kalua, Winston Duke, Sterling K. Brown, Angela Bassett, Forrest Whitaker. I can't believe that. Kendrick Lamar. What?

What? This is is this all the all the white sleep? All the whites in this movie look like dweebs, you know? The the whites are absolute Dweebs. Whites as Dweebs month. So we should have called the theme maybe. And this is this is my favorite uh MCU movie, so um I'm tired of us trying to figure out how to do MCU on this podcast. You you're taking the reins.

We're just we're just jumping to twenty eighteen. Okay. You know? If that's what it takes. And we're gonna do Black Panther. If that's what it friggin' takes. Love this movie. Pro you weren't expecting this in a million years, Black Panther.

You know, Danny, he's an enigma. It's hard to predict what he's gonna do. I mean, the man who's written off the MCU more than anyone on the show. Yeah. Yeah, here he comes picking the first movie from it. Yeah. Mm-hmm. If I let me read a review from one of our hosts. Okay. Cause one of them doesn't have a review of for this film. Okay. Uh Slim. Maybe the most important superhero movie of our generation.

Jeez. God. That's your first review for this film. We have three reviews. Three reviews? That was cooking. Yeah. Dang. Yeah. Okay. I'm really excited to watch this again. It's been a while since I've I don't even know if I've logged it. You don't like it. You don't like movies in general. You're right. Something we're working on is the time twenty six. So this is how I like to go kick off the month, I guess. Long live the king. T'Challa. We'll get into it.

Uh that's February second to lead off the month. Uh February ninth. I'll go. Okay. I got I got three options. This is really difficult, folks. Really difficult. But I've been looking for an excuse to cover this movie. Okay. Um one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. It's not Mel Brooks, folks. Everyone cool out. I'm not choosing that one. Tyler Perry? I'm gonna type it in. Tyler Perry on the pod. With special guest Tyler Perry sitting in.

Uh I'm gonna be choosing from 2009 and Scott Sanders Black Dynamite. Oh Michael Jai White. Arcinio Hall, Tommy Davidson, Kevin Chapman. I mean, we're talking about the kings of comedy right here. Yeah. Kings. Uh I rewatched this a couple years ago for the Letterbox Show, and I was gobsmacked. by uh the laugh. Okay. Fun at Black Exploitation. Um, so let me pull up the uh synopsis here on IMDB. Black Dynamite is the greatest African American action star of the nineteen seventies.

When his only brother is killed by the man, it's up to him to find justice. Hell yes. This looks amazing. Dude, I'm excited for this. I've never seen this. My God. Get the tissues ready. Diamond the tissues. For the tears. Oh tears. That's what the tissues are from. Oh. From laughing so hard. Yes, the laughter tears. Right. Okay. Uh that's February 9th. So February 16th is Peretto's peg. Okay, so my pick, we've covered some, I think, big movies on here. Uh

Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X. These are movies that I had heard of and like I need to watch this. Another one that we haven't covered that I've always heard a lot about, feel like it's time to finally cover it. Uh, from nineteen ninety one, Boys in the Hood. Let's Oh holy shit. Go! This was my B pick. I have this tab open right now. Oh my gosh. Ricky

Unbelievable. Boys in the privacy is forever. Folllows the lives of three young males living in the Crenshaw ghetto of Los Angeles, dissecting questions of race, relationships, violence. And future prospects. I can't believe this is amazing. Angela double dipping this month. Boys in the Hood. Boys in the Hood, 4K. Do I own the 4K of this? Is there a 4K? I'm looking. I do not own it. Streaming on that stats. Uh I guess there's no 4K that I can see, but nonetheless, it's streaming on Netflix.

Dynamite. Okay. I have never seen it either. You wait. No. Mm-mm. I've seen gifts probably. You know, the gift. The gifts. Yeah. You have not seen gifts from Boys and the There's no way. Maybe. Maybe there's a gift. There's I don't know. There's gotta be a gift of cubicle. You're thinking of Friday. I don't think there's gifs of this There's no gifs on the internet of this movie? You're saying that right now? If I t if I type in Giffy, I'm going to Giffy.

Don't you were spoiling the movie. No, no, don't don't. No, don't. It's gonna pull up a scene. I know it's gonna pull up a scene. Do not pull it up. All right, all right. Man, Friday would have been a banger too. Did you ever see uh the wood? Was that Singleton? No, it's not Singleton, but The Wood was a movie that I watched in high school a lot. Uh a lot? A lot. Yeah. I had the Tay I had the VHS, I think of the the the wood. Omar Epps. Tay Diggs. Okay.

Um are we in agreement? We haven't talked about it off air. Are we in agreement for the fourth week movie? We still down for that? Okay. I don't remember what it is. It's in it's in so much conversation right now. I think we need to get the conversation going. Yeah. Um One of the hosts on the show might not

Might not love this movie, but we're gonna get into it. We'll get into it. We're not gonna name names. One host hasn't seen it. Yeah. And Ryan is back in the same month. Ryan Kugler Cinners twenty twenty five. Double dipping again. We will double dip. Yeah. It's our show. Uh for those that are living under a rock, trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

This was the Talk of the Town when it came out. Oh yeah. Haley Steinfeld. It still is talk of a town. One of the greatest generation uh actors of our generation, Haley. Michael B. Jordan. Dual role, double dipping in the same movie. Delroy Lindo. There's so much double dipping. Delroy's in this? Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Hell yeah. So that's February. Black History Month at seventy M M. Um and I like I said, it's been too long since we covered uh movie from Black Director about the Black experience.

Uh, whatever that may mean. So we're we're writing some wrongs this month in February. Big month. It's a big mum. Boys in the hood. Boys in the hood. But that's insane. I actually didn't know where you were going saying you're checking off a big one, Proto. Couldn't I couldn't tell what it was going to be. I can't. 90s. All right. So everyone, um buckle up. Buckle up. Add these to your watch list. Watch along with us. Uh, and we will see you in.
