Speaker 2

Hello everyone, and welcome to this seven minute leadership podcast. It's episode four forty two and today we're going to explore something leaders almost never talk about out loud, and that's boredom. Now, I know what you're thinking. Leaders aren't supposed to be bored We're supposed to be running from meeting to meeting, fixing problems, making big decisions, and constantly moving at one hundred miles an hour. But here's the truth.

Boredom is not the enemy. In fact, if you handle it the right way, boredom can be the doorway to some of the most creative leadership ideas that you'll ever have. When we think of boredom, we think of wasted time sitting at a desk, staring at a wall, waiting for something to happen. But in leadership, boredom is usually a sign of something else. That you've reached a point of stability, that your team is running smoothly, that all of your

fires are out. And this is where many leaders get uncomfortable because they feel they have nothing to do, so they start micromanaging, creating unnecessary projects, or just idling in neutral. But here's the twist. Those moments when your leadership plate is unexpectedly clear are golden opportunities for creative breakthroughs. Because boredom creates mental space. It forces your brain to slow down, to wander, to connect dots that it normally wouldn't. That's

where your next big improvement can come from. So let me break this down into three phases you can use to turn boredom into leadership creativity. Phase one is awareness. When you feel that sense of there's nothing to do right now, stop trying to fill the silence with busy work. Recognize it as space. This is the perfect time to ask yourself, what's something we've never tried before, or what's a problem we've been ignoring because it's not urgent. Awareness

shifts boredom from frustration to opportunity. Phase two is exploration. Now that you've noticed the space, it's time to let your mind wander with purpose. This might mean picking up a whiteboard marker in brainstorming ten completely off the wall ideas for your team, It might mean reviewing a process that hasn't been touched in years. It could be reading an article outside of your industry just to see what sparks.

Boredom without exploration becomes stagnation. Boredom with exploration becomes invention. In Phase three is activation. This is where you take the idea you've uncovered and turn it into something real. It doesn't have to be a massive change. It could be a small experiment, a new approach to team meetings, or a fresh incentive program. The key is to pick something you can implement quickly so that the creative spark you found doesn't fade. And here's the leadership secret. Nobody

tells you. Some of the most game changing innovations in companies, sports, teams, and organizations were born when leaders were bored enough to think beyond the immediate crisis. When your schedule is jam packed with urgent tasks, your brain has no room to imagine a better future. Boredom clears the runway. Think of Thomas Edison sitting in his lab with nothing urgent to build that day, just tinkering, or a coach in the off season rewatching old game tapes and dreaming up a

new formation that's boredom turning into brilliance. So here's your challenge for this week. Schedule thirty minutes where you do nothing but think. No phone, no email, no reports, no laptop, Just sit with a pen and a notebook and ask yourself, if I could change anything in my team or organization, what would it be. You might surprise yourself with what comes out of that quiet space. Boredom is not the enemy of leadership. Distraction is. And if you can turn

boredom into intentional creativity, you'll never fear a quiet day ever. Again, this has been the seven Minute Leadership Podcast, and I thank you for listening.
