I don't mean as a tourist or a guest. No, I mean as a tourist. No, I've never been to Alcatraz. It's kind of like a national park or something. I was there one time in San Francisco. I said, ah, what the heck, let me just go to Alcatraz. You get on the boat. And you go and you walk around and you look at this place and you think, why in the world would anybody want to be here? You know, it was not great. But, you know, it's become famous.
Through movies and everything Al Capone was there Machine Gun Kelly was there a whole bunch of other notorious criminals were there Clint Eastwood with us there. Burt Lancaster. But what I find interesting is, you know, you've seen The Birdman of Alcatraz. Have you read the book? Of course not. Why would I say if you've read the book? Well, you've heard of the Birdman of Alcatraz. Yes? No? No. Okay. Well, this is a guy.
His name was Stroud. Robert Stroud, known as the Birdman of Aquaphys. He was born in Seattle. and he went to Juneau and at the age of 18 he became a pimp. Believe it or not, I mean, you know, I guess the legislature was all taken, so he decided to do that. And he was in Juneau. That was before, I think, was Juneau the capital any I was? And so he was, you know, negotiating some business with somebody. And they didn't pay. And so he shot the guy. He was a bartender. So he killed him.
and then he was sentenced to 12 years in prison McNeil Island in Fugit Sound and then he was transferred to Leavenworth after he killed somebody else And then he was sent to Alcatraz, finally. But in Leavenworth he developed a I guess an interest in birds and cared for birds. Now he did not care for any birds in Alcatraz. They didn't let him do that, but apparently he did
Somehow, managed to have a small still in his cell, I guess. Anyway, this guy was a vicious killer, according to... the information that I have looked at and he was not this benign nice guy that liked birds. And so there's been a lot of movies that rock.
Have you seen that movie with Sean Connery? I have. Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage have to go to Alcatraz Island to defeat Ed Harris and his group of renegade soldiers. Right. Okay, that was what, the Marines and the Seals or something? I think so. Okay, then there was an escape from Alcatraz with Clint Eastwood. Yep. You saw that one? I think so, a long time ago. Okay. Okay. And then there was the Bird Man of Alcatraz where Burt Lancaster played Stroud.
And apparently this guy, I mean apparently they took so many liberties with this movie, this guy was not a nice guy. He actually died in prison. He died in Missouri. What's interesting is the guy was arrested in 1909 and he died in prison in 1963. So what does that tell you? This is how he spent his life.
Anyway, probably one of Juno's most famous citizens was the Birdman of Alcatraz and now Trump wants to reopen Alcatraz prison and put the worst of the worst there and what he said was and apparently the judges don't want him to send anybody out of the country so I'll just send them to San Francisco that'll fix everybody And, I mean, you know, there's probably safer prisons. You could probably do something out on ADAC.
And you probably wouldn't even have to have bars or anything. Where are they going to go? Right? You put them all the way out there. But the cost would be just prohibitive. Anyway, that was Trump's idea. Whether it will happen or not, I don't know. But I thought I would share a little history with you. Ah, because I found it to be interesting. I'm not an avocado guy. I would much rather eat guacamole than avocados. I'm not really an avocado guy. Guacamole has got onions. Pepper in there. And I like onions. Alright, I'll tell you what. I mean this stuff is this is legendary and it's uh she you know she puts a little hot pepper in there and um it's just i mean it's great it did at um gatherings and stuff it just it's gone so yeah and you can't stop eating it's just delicious So this is her South Texas guacamole that she makes. And it's good stuff. I never had, I mean, you know, before I met her, I had no idea what Mexican food even was. Wow, you led a sheltered life. And she thought I was dumb.
I said, well, look where I come from. We don't have, you know, Mexican food there. Well, we didn't at the time. There's not a lot of Italian-Mexican fusion places. No, there's not. There's not. And so, you know, having grown up, she grew up in South Texas, it's like, for part of her life. So she had all these great recipes and it was wonderful. So I think it's great. and that and maybe a little cerveza you know

Only real slowdown I'm currently seeing is on the I don't know, Crash, when I got up this morning fairly early, Had some rain, and I looked to the mountains, and it looked like we had fresh snow up there.
So, I don't know if we did or not. You shut your dirty mouth. I didn't go up and investigate. But, you know, it looked like there was snow up there. But it was cold this morning. So I just thought I would tell you. I was cold. Mrs. P bought some plants over the weekend. And so we're shuttling them inside. And taking them outside to, you know, kind of get them used to the weather. And the poor things, the poor plants were like, get me out of here. So, I, you know.
If I were a plant I'd say leave me here until you like June, then put me outside. Have you guys bought plants yet or done anything? No, nothing to this point. I'm trying to hold off as long as I can. So, you're the lawn guy though, right? Yeah, my wife's like a crack addict with plants. If it's not crack, it's plants. It becomes ridiculous. Does it? Yes. They're everywhere.
I can't walk across my deck in the summer without killing one of her plants so what is she like that you like to go flowers and fruit flowers and vegetables and i'm sorry i mean she works really really hard all summer last year and i think we got one small carrot and cucumber out of the whole thing Well, we went and we planted a bunch of stuff one year. Brussels sprouts, which I like. We were ready to harvest and I thought I and I'll wait another couple of days well apparently a moose
walked through the yard and did the harvesting for me. The one that we have no luck with whatsoever are strawberries. Really? Those things grow like crazy. My backyard, the bees eat them every year.
I'll go out there and they'll just be chewed to pieces. There'll always be bees all over them. Oh, yeah. And then the raspberries, I wish we never would have planted them. Oh, those things, those things are crazy. It's horrible. I hate them. It's a weed. I wish they would go away. Now, do you have the red ones or the gold ones? They're red.
And I much prefer them. I wish I would have planted blackberries because I like those better. Oh, yeah. But they're, I mean, they're an invasive species, man. They're growing up through the lats in my deck. You gotta burn them out or something. There's no way you can get rid of them short of just pulling your whole everything out. We've tried everything.
Yeah, once they're rooted, they're pretty tough. Yeah, they're sprouting up in the middle of the yard. Like I said, they're growing through the deck. But they sure are good. Yeah, I guess. but we've got We've got so many of them. My whole fence line, it's all lined with them. Don't you make jam out of it? No, I don't want to make jam out of it. What is with you? Too much work.
Then they're growing, they've jumped the fence, and they're now in my neighbor's yard. And they're out in the green belt on the other side of my back fence, too. There's raspberries everywhere. Oh, well, I'll tell you what. If you ever want to just pick them, I'll take them from you. You want me to come over? I'll pick Grant Raspberries.
Yeah, I wouldn't necessarily let you in the house, but I'll open the back gate for you. No, you know, I don't let me in the house. I'll get a bucket and I'll go pick raspberries and we'll make jam. There you go. Would you like some fresh raspberry jam? No, I don't want any jam. I don't like jam or jelly or any of that crap. Well, what do you put with peanut butter? Nothing. Alaska's news source says nine of the ten members of an American Simone family in Whittier are being charged with voter misconduct and perjury after voting as non-U.S. citizens. Police say the three people whose bodies were found in a university-area apartment in Anchorage last month were killed in a domestic violence incident. It happened April 23rd at the College View apartment homes. Two men and a woman found dead.
A soldier from Alaska is dead following a training exercise in South Carolina. Army official saying 22-year-old Private Gabriel Perez died during a basic training exercise at Fort Jackson. The Alaska Volcano Observatory says smaller villages could see an inch of ash if Mount Spur erupts. The aviose says an inch of ashfall could hit the smaller villages a quarter inch falling in the mountains with burrow and anchorage. The volcano is still at a yellow advisory. That's the latest. Toolbag. This guy basically says, you no longer get to share in your oil wells. Because I said so. Instead, this is going to be a welfare payment. Yeah, that's what it is. And Daryl looked it up. The average income for just a regular single person is just over $50,000 a year in the state of Alaska. The average income for a family is $114,000 a year. So basically by him setting those limits on those two particular groups of people,
your average Alaskan is no longer eligible for a PFD. So he did exactly what you just said. He's turning it into some sort of government handout, which is what we've been arguing against the whole time. That's not what it is. And he's not what it is. You brought it up off air. Does that mean he's going to give us the mineral rights back? Is that part of the bill? All the people that
that are over that threshold there that don't get... So how come only half of this agreement seems to be honored? The half that benefits the legislature and the government, they've got no problem holding on to all that and honoring that. But the part where we get what's due to us... that gets conveniently ignored and what this
moron, is proposing now. You've got to be kidding me. So I'll tell you, if you're listening to the sound of my voice and you live in Zach Field's district, next time you go to vote, keep in mind that this is the guy, if you are an average, as far as income goes, an average Alaskan family or single person, you are no longer eligible for a PFD if this clown gets what he wants. Well, see, if Zach fails, we're smart. And just looking at what he just did here tells me that maybe that's not the case.
He should have put a provision in there that said, if you don't want to get the permanent fund dividend anymore, we'll pay you out. Right. No, he just wants to take it away, wholeheartedly take it away. I'm good with that. Now, here's an interesting thing. In Munster in Alaska, Suzanne Downing did a great job, and what she did was she listed the PFD dividend amounts. from 1982 when it started to 2024. Okay? Now, you and I, Crash, have said this all along. The formula worked.
Mr. Fields, and I don't know if he is a financial wizard or not, but he says it's no longer practical to use the 1982 formula. Well, let me just tell you a couple of things. In 1982, I got $1,000. That was a big deal. That was a lot of money in 1982. That's worth about almost $4,000 today. Okay? Then in 1983 went to 386, to 331, to 401, etc. And what it was was a rolling five-year average. So some years we did well, some years we didn't do so well.
But it worked because every year we seemed to either get a decent size PFD or we went back down. And nobody complained, right? I mean, do you remember that? We all kind of said, Gee, what's the PFD going to be this year? It was kind of an event. When it was $300, $400, $500, $600, I was like, oh, that's too bad. But this is happening, and this is happening in a couple more years. It'll come back up.
No, I'm telling you, man, no matter what he does for the rest of his life, this is what Bill Walker is going to be remembered for. He absolutely threw a hand grenade at the PFD. He completely torpedoed the whole thing. That's his legacy. No matter how many good things you think he did or how many things you didn't like or didn't like, this is what he's known for. This is what he will be remembered for.
Because that one fateful day when you decided to cut that, you could just see those greedy, money-hungry people in Juneau go, oh, we got an in now. And then, you know, bless his heart, Wilkowski takes it to the Supreme Court, and they make a ruling that kind of screws all of us. And now, ever since then, it's been the elephant in the room.
And then the thousand dollars seems to be the measuring stick. That's where they always want to find it around a thousand bucks there. But if you look at the averages for a single person or a married couple here in the state of Alaska, A married couple, the average in the state of Alaska is $114,000 a year. So even if you are a fair amount below the average, you still are not eligible for a permanent fund dividend check under Zach Field's ridiculous proposal. He's turning it into welfare.
Well, I think exactly I don't know, and I didn't see the whole thing, but I think I seem to remember that all the kids under 18 would still be eligible. I don't know if that was part of it or not. I always like going to the representative's Facebook pages. So, Zach Fields, this is from a couple of weeks ago. I'll be at New Sagaya Sunday, April 13th at 8.30 if you want to stop by and catch up. The first thing you see, you're not worth the time stealing money meant for the people of Alaska, you traitor. Oh my gosh, there's a lot of colorful language here too. Someone told him to eat something that nobody would ever really want to eat.
I don't think Zach Fields was expecting... the reception that he got and part of it is that Zach Fields is a young guy he's not an old guy he's a young guy and and you know as my dad would say he's not quite done yet You know?
And if you're unaware, Zach Fields, House District 20, including downtown Fairview, South Edition, Government Hill, East Ridge, and Anchorage. So if you live in those areas, he's your representative in the House, and that's the guy that's... that's proposing that anybody who has Making $50,000 a year as an individual or $100,000 a year as a married couple is no longer eligible for the PFD.
That's your money, by the way. And he's not proposing to give you any of your mineral rights back or anything like that. So if you live in his district, have fun with that. If you're running against him, if you live in that district and you want to run against him, it'd be a pretty easy road to hoe moving forward.
This is absolutely ridiculous. I mean, it's bad enough that every time they all get together, they chop a little bit more off of it. But this right here, again, if you live in his district, House District 20, keep that in mind next time you go vote. Then he tried to take all that money away from you. And you know what? Like I said, if you're a single person or a married couple,
$114,000 a year, it's not a horrible living for people, but you're also not a millionaire at that point. You know what I mean? So I don't just see the logic behind this. At least I'm not going to say it. If the Republicans had their act together, let's hope they do, you folks can run somebody in his district. Now, you can't run a super conservative in his district because it's not a super conservative district. But you can run somebody who's a Republican who's going to be a lot more conservative than this guy. You can beat him and you can beat him simply by using this one single issue. He can't run from it
He cannot run from this. This is his. His name's all over it. His fingerprints are on it. His picture is on it. He's, he's, this is wrapping him up. And if the Republicans can't figure out whom to run and how to beat this guy after he just gave you the gift that will keep on giving forever, then I don't know what to tell you.
So, you know, Zach, you're lucky I'm not in charge because if I were, you wouldn't be there next year or whatever the heck it was that you're running. And I think it probably in 26, 2026. I don't have anything against Zach Fields. I don't dislike the guy. I don't even know the guy. or somebody who has any hopes of ever retaining their job in the political arena here would ever propose something like this. I don't know, but again, if you live in his district, keep that in mind. Zach Fields, House District 20. If that's where you live, this is what this guy wants to do to you. Well, this is all so Zach feels, too. He says, a legislative resolution voicing strong support for the long envisioned Alaska liquefied natural gas line.
The governors in DC with Trump and all the other big wigs, right? Projected to clear a key hurdle this week passing the House Resources Committee with overwhelming backing. save for one descending vote from Guess Who? Anchorage representative Democrat Zach Fields, who described, now listen to the words he used, he described the hopes for the project,

You know, today, in fact, within the last hour, I filed my letter of intent to run for state office for the office of governor in the 26th election. And I wanted to let you and your listeners know that right away. All right. Well, we appreciate being the first radio show to broadcast that. Let me ask, what made you decide to do that? That's a monumental decision. Well, it is, and I don't take it lightly. I've been thinking about it, you know, it's been on my mind actually quite a lot the last...
few years and I decided that I want to do this. I know that I have the skill set to be able to bring the people together that can solve the problems that we've got going on in our state right now. I mean, we've got budget issues that are critical and they're affecting our economy and they're affecting education and their families in so many different areas. Our education system has some challenges, as you know.
And, you know, public safety is affected greatly by the budget situation. And that's all something that any of us, if we have to call public safety, we want them to come right now. And so... it's really important to me that we... continue to work on strengthening that But our resources here in the state, we are so blessed with all the resources that we need.
that make us not have to be dependent on other countries for things. That not only helps us as a state budget-wise, but it helps us in our national security, and that's critical. And luckily for us right now, we have some really strong friends. in Washington, D.C., mainly starting with the president who loves Alaska and is helping us to get these things on
And so we can start producing more and mining and drilling and doing all those things that Alaskans know how to do best. And I'm excited to continue to be a part of that as well. Alaska is my chosen home. I care very much about this place. I chose to live here many, many years ago after a two-week vacation. I said, nope, I'm staying. And here I am, over 40 years, still here. So I'm willing to do my part to continue to help Alaska grow.
Well, it's going to be interesting, and one of the things that we're looking at is a gas line, and I've been up here a long time. as have you and you know when I first got up here it was the oil line you know that was a ways off it took seven years to do that But then it was all the gas line is going to go right in right after that and that was what 1977 78 man And we've been waiting ever since Does it look from where you sit in the administration, does it look like this is going to happen?
With the information that I have, which I don't have all the information or a complete picture, but with the information that I do have, I feel more confident than I have ever felt that it's going to move forward. And what I will tell you is that the team from... Our Alaska state government has been working diligently with investors, talking with them, with the different players involved around the country and the world.
and I'm looking forward to becoming more involved in that, and hopefully we can bring this to fruition for Alaska. That would be super. So, basically, I guess, It's now a run here. I mean you filed your letter of intent and I guess it's time to get moving. Well, I think you're right. So every weekend and evening is all taken up now for the next 18 months. But you know, there's a lot of people
I'm hearing that there are several people that are going to jump in and run. I think we have a lot of good Alaskans, and I look forward to having productive conversations with them and each of us being able to talk about what we have to offer. to the state and to Alaskan residents and I think it can be a good time getting all these things out on the table for everybody answering questions. And when I say a good time, I don't mean party good time. I mean it can be a productive time.
And I look forward to having those productive conversations with other candidates and moving forward. And I'm grateful for you for making a couple extra minutes for me today to call in. Well, we're always happy to do that. So do you, I mean, at this point, you file a letter of intent. What's the next step? I mean, this allows you to start getting money and setting up a campaign. What else does it do? Yeah, it allows me to officially begin speaking.
about running for this position, about fundraising, and all of those things, which, you know, it takes a lot of money to run a campaign and all the services and things that are involved with getting your word out there. None of it's free except, you know, Hamilton. give my time and do those things. I'm not, obviously, none of the candidates were paid for doing that, but all the other services that we need are costly.
I will be working on that and talking with as many folks as I can and doing a lot of listening. And again, I think it's really important to bring critical players together and Let's find areas that we can compromise and work together so that we can continue to have Alaska be the greatest place in our country. So Crash, any other comments that you may have on Mr. Fields' House Bill 209 where he wants to take away
your PFD if you make over a certain amount of money every year. Well, and I also mentioned this too when we were talking off air. It's not just, you know, he introduces the bill, but other people in the House are going to have to vote for it if it gets pushed through. So that bears watching as well, not just This guy that introduced the idea, this harebrained idea of nobody making over 50 grand a year or a couple making over 100.
gets a PFD. Keep an eye on who else is voting for this, because it's not just him. He can throw this thing out there. If nobody else votes for it, it's obviously going to go nowhere, but that also bears watching, too. to see how many of these other people down there in Juneau think that this is a great idea. And you'll keep that in mind when you go vote for them or don't next time. The whole idea to me is just, it's ridiculous.
Well, I think it's a trial balloon, and I think whether Zach knowingly or unknowingly did this, I think he's now suffering the slings and arrows of his outrageous fortune because he couldn't possibly think that this is popular. I know they're in an echo chamber down there and they keep hearing from their very own saying, oh, it's a great idea. Nobody wants the PFD. Everybody wants to be taxed. Everybody wants to pay more money for education than we're already in the bottom of the barrel.
But you know it's like Compromise is one thing. This is just beyond the pale here This is essentially sticking your hand in my pocket and stealing from me So, that's kind of it. It's crazy down there, Mike. It's always something we're not talking about. Now, one thing I want you to promise me is that you won't drink too much of the water there, because I think that's what's causing it. They have pretty good water, I feel like. You know, Juno is all hydro. It's cheap power. It's all hydropower. They figured that out like 100 years ago. Yeah, they got the power with it. It's all hydro.
Well, what are you following these days? I know you've been doing lots of breaking news and stuff. So what's on the agenda? What have you guys been following? I've been watching the budget. It's on the Senate floor now. We're able to kind of get out of the deficit for the FY26, the upcoming year's budget. There's still a deficit in the supplemental budget from last year. that they're going to have to find a way to film.
Really, the CBR is the only way, but by reducing the dividend down to $1,000 and cutting some other money here and there and operating in capital and reappropriating some old money, they've at this point kind of been able to get rid of the deficit. There's still the supplemental problem that they're going to have to I don't really agree with the premise of the Fields bill necessarily, but I will say, you know,
Somebody's got to do something. I mean, this has been year nine. We're coming up on this formula not being followed. I mean, nobody who's serious, nobody thinks we're going to. follow the formula. I mean, even the governor was trying to do it in his budget, and some of the Republicans, and some Democrats, Danielle Foster and Nellie Jimmy, she's backed off a little bit from that.
But they all recognize you have to basically drain what's left in the CBR for one year, to pay for one year, and then going forward you have to... raise a ton of revenue because even the governor and the republicans and the democrats nobody's talking about making big reductions in fact i think we need to spend more money we need to build things we have to do projects and I think we should do the Kinnick Arm Crossing, 2nd Douglas Bridge, and Juneau, all these things.
You know, we have to build things. And there's also operational issues with snow plowing. I think we should spend more money on behavioral health and treatment for people who are homeless. And if they don't want the help, then we deal with them in another way. I think we should have the carrot and the stick. And right now we're doing nothing. We're just letting people do whatever they want.
and there's no help really available, I mean, limited. They closed the Providence Behavioral Health, the Bartlett one is closing. If this... Golden Lion thing, they're supposed to, you know they're supposed to get $15 million from the Chugach Electric? Right. That was like seven years ago, right? Did they do that?
No, there's a clock on the money. It's for behavioral health. It's supposed to happen by October. If not, they have to give the money back, the $15 million. But if they do it at Golden Lion, I guess what I understand is they have to put 100 people on the street. Oh, my gosh. It's wild. I mean, it's been, what, 18, 7 years?
Why didn't we just do that? We had the money. Bronson, I think he tried. He followed the assembly. There was a lot of problems. It started under Berkowitz. He went off in a flame. or what you call that dumpster fire you know crash and burn and then $15 million was supposed to go to behavioral health treatment, and they used it to buy the Golden Lion, but if they don't build that, they have to give the whole $15 million back to TrueGap. October so what are they going to do is assess us
To get the money? I mean, no, the money is in it. I mean, it's from the sale, but it was designated, you know, and said some of this money has to go to this purpose. If it doesn't, you know, there's a clock on it. So the money's there, I guess. I mean, I think they've spent some of it. So, I mean, yeah, I guess they're going to have to go and spend $10 million out of $15, I think, on the Golden Lion. But it wasn't for buying a hotel. It was for...
Creating a behavioral health. Right, yeah. So, I don't know, I get so frustrated. I'm in Juneau, and you and I might not agree on some things, but I think we can probably agree that I'm down there, and it's just, It's just wild. It's a circus. You get on the merry-go-round, you get off, and it's like Groundhog Day. This thing's got big problems. And I'm telling you, you think it's bad now with the pressure of oil and where the pressure of oil
Probably will be, barring some major event in a year. The FY27, that's the budget for next year, not this year. The FY26 starts in July. So next year when they come back, the legislature, and there's FY27, I can't even imagine how things are going to be going. In an election year, 50 seats up, all 40 House seats, 10 Senate seats, the Governor's seat. And by the way, this is the first time in 24 years we've had a two-term governor who can't run for re-election.
That's really pretty amazing. Tony, no. It really is. That was the last, ever since then, there was always, now some of them got beat, but there was always an incumbent. Well, this is going to be wild. We just had Nancy Dahlstrom just called in a few minutes ago, and she's filed a letter of intent. You're breaking news, Mike. I heard about it, and I tweeted it out. I went to the APOC, and so I clicked Bishop Files. And I mean, I think it's crazy. I like the laws in a lot of European countries.
They make it three or four months. I think it's like three or five months for the campaign. We're a year and a half out. It's kind of crazy. Yeah, unfortunately, it takes a lot of money to run these things. Yeah, and the unlimited donations, which I kind of like. Maybe they should be, I don't know, maybe you should limit it to 25 or maybe some number, 1,000, but they had a bill they passed in the House. to limit donations to, I think it's like $4,000 per cycle maybe.
I would imagine it's not going to get much traction in the Senate with just two and a half weeks left until the end of session, May 21st. I think you're right. Hey, Mike, my friend. I listened to your breaking news. Never a dull moment in the state of Alaska, is there? No, there never is that's why you know I sit back here and I think well This is great stuff. I love being able to provide information to people.
So so I'm going to ask you As we as we kind of get closer to the end of the session here Your thoughts, but we've been covering this this Bill from Zach feels I don't I don't think it's going anywhere, but you would know better than I House bill 209 where he wants to essentially turn the permanent fund dividend into a welfare program, and it doesn't seem to be going over too well. Yeah, he didn't get a lot of love from that either. Oh my goodness, over the weekend it was...
It wasn't, we just don't like your bill, we hate your bill, right? And, you know, I think, I don't know if there was any strategy. behind it, but the news broke out about it. About the same time, the Senate finance reduced the $1,400 PFD to $1,000 in the budget, and it serves to be a bit of a distraction, but One of the things, I didn't know anything, and I heard HP 209, so I go look it up.
You know, you Google Alaska legislature, there it is. You click on bill, type in H209. And first I got the sponsor statement, and it just said something. The whole sheet just said it was capping the PFD at $1,000. said nothing about turning it into a welfare program. So I found that a bit deceptive. A sponsor statement should give a quick recap of the essence of the bill. It did not. But looking at the bill, it was clear what it did.
I would say that it has no chance of passing. Zero chance of passing this session. But I will say... We should not be complacent on this one, Mike. There's a danger. This could be a slippery slope because when these ideas get floated, and then they get repeated over time, people begin to be a little more comfortable with the thought of them. So that's what we need to watch out. There is some questions based on the Zobel case, you know, could...
could this be constitutional? I think you'd have to change the whole It couldn't be the PFD program really anymore, probably. It would have to be just a brand new welfare program, basically. But I don't see it passing. I know people are upset about it. But I don't see it. You know, and I listen to Jeff Landfield, and he's spot on. We need a solution. And actually, I would be more. You're listeners, I think. We all should be more concerned. about the PFC disappearing altogether.
than HB 209 because that is the trajectory we are on. We have not taken the, there has not been the political will to put a fiscal plan together to build our fiscal house in a way that would provide certainty. to the private sector economy to help our state be business friendly so that it's not going to look like every time oil prices go down we chase after businesses and
collect more new taxes and higher taxes, because that has been how we've been operating. So, you know, one of the things I'm wondering about, I feel like we have We have a short window to turn this ship from getting the iceberg here. And we'll...
Will where we are right now get enough people? Some of us have been waving the flag. It's been over decades since I've been talking about this. Will there be enough people to say, you know, we need to look at these things. We need to fix the spending cap. Because if you are at a place where oil prices stay low, which I think that is likely just based on the ramped up production around the U.S. and what's happening around the globe.
We don't expect them to go up. So we are going to look at, you know, cutting the budget and how we're going to pay the bills. And I'll take a breather here, but I do want to say the Senate Finance Committee, they've been the adults in the room this year. Mike, I don't know if you're listeners and you realize, but they have cut between the capitals. And operating budgets, I think it's around $230 million. Mm-hmm.
The problem is we haven't had enough adults in the room over the last couple decades. That is our problem because we should be building things like Jeff Landfield said. We are lean on infrastructure. And instead of putting all this money in the operating budget for these last couple of decades, we should have been having a more robust capital budget. That's a real motivator for me.
to get a constitutional spending cap so we can get the proper balance and really put what we need into our infrastructure. I think you're absolutely right. When we start building things, people get employed, areas start to grow. And, you know, you start getting some permanent jobs out of it. You certainly get a lot of construction jobs. But there will be permanent jobs associated with it, too. One of the things we're looking at now is this LNG project, which would be massive.
if we can make this happen. But that's just one thing, Shelley, and you've been here and you know probably as well as anybody all the things we could do with this state. Absolutely. You know, as we talked about the need to get our fiscal house in order, I feel like we've still been driving towards the cliff, and this year we're just driving a little.
slower. There's not the political will really to take care of things. But today we did pass a resolution urging Congress to honor and keep their promise as far as the 90-10 split. with royalties on NPRA and ANWR. That is important. You know, it burns me, Mike. It burns me. I look at a place like New York Guess how much of the federal government owns in New York? How much of the land? Not much. Next door in Pennsylvania, it's 2.2%. They own 62 friggin' percent in our state.
And the least they can do is honor the agreement, the terms, the 90-10. So I think that is an important thing. And as far as the project, it's not just the gas line, which it is seeming to come together. We're all very helpful, but Sockeye, that project is extremely... extremely positive. Can we bring it on more quickly? Can we
Can we figure out how not to take years and years and years and years before oil comes out of the ground? Can we be a little more like Texas where we can turn things around? But sockeye is on state land, and all that revenue will come to the state. The federal government is not going to take a big chunk of it. So there are opportunities, but getting our fiscal house in order, because when these revenues come up, we cannot grow the operating budget again.
We can't do it for the sake of our kids and our grandkids. And it's going to take leadership. It's going to take determination. And I'll tell you one of the things I want to fight for, Mike. I want to fight for getting some of that federal land back. All states were supposed to come into the union. I would love to take a case all the way to the Supreme Court on that. I think we got the shaft. There were some other states that got the shaft.
And that would be another thing that would really help us. as far as reaching our potential and destiny as a state. There's so much opportunity. We have 49 of the 50 critical minerals. But what are we doing in that department? We're barely scraping the surface. I guess that would be a pun. We're barely scraping the surface when it comes to mining. So there's tremendous potential. And we've got to fight for these things. And, you know, today they passed a resolution slamming Trump.
As far as the tariffs, it's like, what are you guys doing? We've got somebody who's trying to open doors for us. And you're slamming him on something that you have no clue. You don't have any clue of how this tariff thing is going to come out, but I can tell you the American farmers have been getting the shaft from the Canadian farmers, so there does need to be some rebalancing in my mind.
Oh, absolutely. There needs to be. And I think that Trump is on the right track. And I think what's going to happen... there's going to be a reset and I think you're going to find that the countries that have been getting a really good deal all this time are gonna now realize the gravy trains over now you're gonna have to play fair and play nice and they'll find that we're actually good people to play with So I don't think it's going to be terrible. I think it's going to be good for everybody.
I think so, too, and we are very fortunate that our governor has a good relationship with the president right now. He's been going to bat for us in D.C., and I think... I think we're going to start seeing good things, but I hate to see The legislature trips things up. It's like, what are you people thinking? Oh, I want to say, since I mentioned the governor, it is his birthday today, so I just want to wish Governor Dunleavy birthday blessings today.
You know, we all get a year older. That just happens. And I think he's holding his own quite fine. And, you know, he's been a governor very intense on the subject of education, as you know, Mike. And I did a little looking this weekend, and I don't think people realize this. We all know that school choice.
is a very positive thing for children to give parents the right to select what's the best option for their children and I did a little research and we are at the top in the entire country, if you count the percentage of children across the U.S. that go into charter schools, public homeschool, independent homeschool, and private schools. The average across the nation is 18%. In Alaska, it is 26%. It's public and independent. Home school, private school, and charter school. 26%.
So more than a quarter of our children are taking advantage of wonderful opportunities more than in any other state. And I have to give that credit. the gun lobby because when he was a senator that was his main focus and he did get some reforms through And we are now the best in the nation. There's more work to be done, but I just want to give them credit for that because I didn't really realize that. I actually thought maybe we were behind, but no, we're far ahead every other state.
