My journey as the 49ers Fangirl began on January 14, 1990. It was on that day that as a young girl, I traveled to San Francisco with my family for the 1989 NFC Championship game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams. A native Angeleno, I was rooting for the Rams. Then at some point, in the middle of the second quarter, I turned to my mom and said, “I love Joe Montana.” And that was it. I became a die-hard, gold-blooded Niner Faithful and never looked back. Tracy Sandler and San Francisco 49ers and 49ers Fan GirlAs a teenage girl, I watched every game, dressed in good luck outfits on game days – even if those days were Monday and I had school, educated my teenage girlfriends about Steve Young and Elvis Grbac, while discussing Tom Rathman, Jerry Rice, and Ricky Watters with my teenage guy friends. I cried when the Niners lost to the Giants in the 1990 NFC Championship game – damn Matt Bahr field goal! Instead of a Sweet 16, I went to Dallas for the NFC Championship game, which did not turn out nearly as well as the Rams game. I was a little older at that point, so I didn’t cry, at least not on the outside (same for Super Bowl 47 and the 2013 NFC Championship in Seattle. I was there for both – kept the tears inside, at least while in public). I’ve cheered on every quarterback from Montana to Young to Elvis Grbac to Jeff Garcia to Alex Smith to now Colin Kaepernick. From 14-2 to 6-10, I’ve stayed strong. A sportswriter in college at The University of Michigan – Go Blue! (yes I have conflicting emotions about the whole Jim Harbaugh thing, happy to discuss), I decided to start a blog during the 2014 season. I pace during games; I stand during the 4th quarter; I don’t eat on Sundays. My dogs – one of whom is named Kappy – have jerseys. I am convinced my white Kaepernick jersey can be the difference between a win and a loss, while my red Kaepernick jersey is more fickle. I fly to Santa Clara from Los Angeles for every home game. I have a blog about the red and gold. I am the 49ers Fangirl. Like the team, I’ll make you laugh; I might make you cry; but together, we’ll get through it bleeding gold and staying Niner Faithful forever. GO NINERS!

[Podcast EP #33] 49ers Rebuilding in 2016 Whether They Like It or Not | 49ers Fangirl

Hello 49ers fans. As you know, Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers have been in the news quite a bit over the last few days regarding Kaepernick’s decision to sit during the National Anthem. He is protesting racial inequality and police brutality in this country. It’s a decision that has sparked both massive support and massive outrage. As you can read here, I am supportive of Kaepernick and his right to take a stand in the manner he sees most fit. Meanwhile, the 2016 NFL season is less...

[Podcast EP #30] Breaking Down 49ers’ Draft & the Definition of a JedBot | 49ers Fangirl

And just like that, the 2016 NFL Draft is over. For better or worse, the San Francisco 49ers made their picks, leaving the first round with two – DeForest Buckner and Joshua Garnett. I thought it was a pretty good draft, but on this week’s Talking Touchdowns podcast, Tim Kawakami (http://www.twitter.com/timkawakami) gave us a perspective that has made me mull it over more. Kawakami joined me (http://www.twitter.com/49ersfangirl) and Steph (http://www.twitter.com/SoCaliSteph) to talk about a numb...

Hello 49ers fans! It is 2016 and already a new era has begun for the San Francisco 49ers. After a 5-11 season in which he was put in an impossible situation, Jim Tomsula was fired. Jed York addressed the media and fans, taking responsibility for the disaster that was the 49ers’ 2015 season. The bad news is I don’t think next season is going to be any better. [Podcast EP #16] Ch-Ch-Changes Ahead for the 49ers - with special guest Matt Maiocco

You win some. You lose some. In the case of the San Francisco 49ers, they just keep losing, and in ugly fashion. Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals was no exception, with the 49ers losing 24-10, and frankly, it was never really that close. So the beat goes on for the 4-10 Niners, as they play their final two games against the Detroit Lions and St. Louis Rams, on the road and at home, respectively. It’s abundantly clear that changes need to be made with all aspects of this team, startin...

[Podcast EP #14] Get Over it 49ers fans. Jed York is here to stay. | 49ers Fangirl

The 49ers got their first road win of the season, and it was exciting! Yes, they’re still 4-8, but they won on the road, in overtime, and showed heart doing it. These are all good things. They showed promise. That being said, the win wasn’t the only big news coming out of Ninerville this week. Team president Paraag Marathe was reassigned, which was a shocking move, as he has been one of the Jed York’s closest confidantes. There has been a lot said about York, and the frustration from the fans is...

Believe it or not, the San Francisco 49ers actually played well in Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals, with a solid defensive effort and continued progress from quarterback Blaine Gabbert. But, sadly, that doesn’t change the fact that they lost and that they are 3-8. On the plus side, next year brings a whole new season. The San Francisco 49ers organization is a mess from top to bottom. It’s not just their 3-7 record, and another bad loss to the Seahawks, it’s the leaks, the finger-pointing and general behavior not becoming an NFL team. The team looks terrible, on the field and off. In a twist no one saw coming (ok, not no one), the Blaine Gabbert led San Francisco 49ers beat the Atlanta Falcons. Gabbert got the job done going 15 of 25 for 185 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. But the real star of the show was the 49ers’ defense. [Podcast EP #10] 49ers Out of Excuses | 49ers Fangirl

After another loss and falling to 2-6, it looks like the San Francisco 49ers realize they’re in rebuilding mode, as they traded TE Vernon Davis and a 2016 7th-round pick to the Denver Broncos for a 6th-round draft pick in 2016 and a 6th in 2017. Although this is sad and signals the end of an era, the trade was not a surprise and makes sense in the long run for all parties. So now the 49ers’ offense moves on and continues to try to find its way in the world, or at least on the football field. In ...

2-4! 2-4! The San Francisco 49ers are 2-4, and frankly I couldn’t be happier – I mean that seriously. Do you know how much better 2-4 is than 1-5? Like, much better. The offense is clicking, the defense did its job, even the turf helped out. But now the Niners face the division rival Seattle Seahawks on a short week, and the stakes are high. Well, hello 49ers fans! Did San Francisco beat the New York Giants? No. But, are there reasons to still feel encouraged? You know it! The Niners lost 30-27, which was a tough one, but they looked like a real, live football team. The offense was clicking, and QB Colin Kaepernick quieted the critics, going 23-35 for 262 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. And you know what else? He looked like Kap. Football is a team sport Niners’ fans, and for the last three weeks, the San Francisco 49ers have lost as a team, due to lack of execution on both sides of the ball. San Francisco’s loss on Sunday was no exception, though there was a bright spot and that was the defense. It looked and played so much better, holding the Green Bay Packers to 17 points. This unit seems to have made the adjustments needed to keep the 49ers in games. Not to mention, this group of guys played its heart out. On the oth...
